My favorite part about camp is… “making new friends!” “everyone being so nice and welcoming!” “hiking and exploring!” “meeting new staff that are from other countries.” “the amazing counselors and the people in my yurt.” “trying new things.” “roasting marshmallows.” “spending time outside.” “high ropes, the pool, giant swing, climbing tower, zip line, and the leap of faith (it’s hard to choose just one favorite thing!)” “friendships that will last a lifetime.” “trying archery.” “climbing the climbing wall.” “my camp family.” “finding girls who like the same things as me.” “off site trip.”

Registration Information Registration for Mini Camp, Resident Camp, the CIT Program and Family Camp will open in February of 2020. Additional details about registration can be found online at www.gshpa.org/summercamp or in our 2020 Camp Guide (coming this winter!). s Leading the Way Program Aide Training Pilot On August 3rd, 2019, 19 Cadette Girl Scouts from throughout the council joined together to participate in Program Aide Training, led by volunteers Carol Caddick (SU 713) and Stacy Smulowitz (Troop 30225), and GSHPA Volunteer Support Coordinators Claire Gilbert and Brynne Hall. At the Program Aide Training, Cadette Girl Scouts sharpened their leadership skills, learned how to work with younger girls, and honed their teambuilding skills, ultimately to help troop leaders deliver effective programming to Girl Scouts. The pilot took place at GSHPA’s Harrisburg headquarters office, and because so many other Cadettes are interested in this topic, GSHPA will schedule several Program Aide Trainings throughout the 30-county footprint starting Spring 2020. Keep an eye out for future trainings on GSHPA’s Event Calendar at www.gshpa.org!

New and Improved

Volunteer Essentials is Here! GSHPA’s volunteer troop leaders wear A LOT of hats in their role. To help each hat fit just a bit more easily, we’ve added a new page to www.gshpa.org, the newly created Volunteer Essentials page. What you’ll find: • Resources for newcomers to experienced leaders, and everyone in between! • Live and recorded webinars • Short instructional videos on a variety of topics such as “Girl-Led at the Cadette Level” and “Building Sisterhood” • Access to important GSHPA safety guidelines, policies, and procedures previously located in the Volunteer Essentials PDF We will add to these resources throughout the year, so troop leaders, program volunteers and parents can access the information at any time. If there’s a topic you want to see on Volunteer Essentials, please email us at troopexperience@gshpa.org and share your comments.

STEAM Invites Girls to sample, try, explore, accomplish + experience a metamorphosis! Now that GSHPA has brought ART to its program curriculum, girls can dive into an entire spectrum of fascinating topics. Whether a girl is interested in science, technology, engineering, arts or mathematics, the 14 mobile programming options offered through GSHPA can meet her wherever her interest exists. The ART component of STEAM officially was added to the 2019 program year when in April, the G.I.R.L. Create @ York Expo Center hosted Caldecott Honor author Jen Bryant. The ART element of STEAM provides girls with yet another creative and stimulating way in which to express themselves and share experiences. Since its launch in April, the official STEAM Mobile offers 14 unique program content areas for girls to experience. New this year is the timely option to request and reserve the STEAM Mobile using the DoubleKnot registration system, the same platform that handles event and camp registrations. DoubleKnot allows for users to request mobile programming visits up to two months in advance, giving members timely access to when the mobile program vehicles are available. A reminder that the STEAM Mobiles can be booked year-round—for troop and Service Unit level activities, along with day and troop adventure camps and troop adventure days. Don’t miss your chance to STEAM ahead with GSHPA Mobile Programs!

Gold Award: The Mark of the Truly Remarkable Gold Award Girl Scouts don’t just change the world for the better, they change it for good. In fact, 87 Gold Award Girl Scouts made their remarkable impact in 2019 by developing meaningful, sustainable solutions to challenges they discovered in their communities and across the world. At the Gold Award event, Girl Scouts from across GSHPA’s 30 counties were honored for the skills they demonstrated while earning the Gold Award including strategic thinking, communication, collaboration, problem solving and time management. High School Girl Scouts (grades 9–12) can individually pursue a Gold Award after completing at least two Senior or Ambassador Leadership Journeys OR one Senior or Ambassador Journey and a Silver Award.
