HOW TO SUPPORT STEM How you can make a difference in the lives of girls You can make it possible for girls in our region to have the unique opportunity to: • Be introduced to a STEM discipline and mentor • Put what they have learned into practice in hands-on, girl led activities • Grow their confidence in STEM • Spark an interest in a STEM career Contact our Development Team how you can make a difference by calling 1.800.692.7816 or emailing at development@gshpa.org.

WHY STEM? Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania introduces girls of every age to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities that are relevant to everyday life. Whether they’re discovering the chemistry of their favorite foods, becoming math whizzes, or learning about careers in STEM fields, girls are moving forward into the future. They can learn techniques used by forensic scientists, build robots, plan ahead for space exploration, design buildings and more!

LESSON PLAN Tennis Ball Towers Materials Needed: Popsicle Sticks, Straws, Coffee Stirrers, Masking Tape, String, and Tennis Balls Instructions: Give groups of girls each the same amount of supplies and instruct them to use their brains to create a tower that holds a tennis ball off of the group by at least 6 inches. They must use all of the materials given, and will not be given any more materials. Give them no further instructions except to use their brains and have fun!

LESSON PLAN Ooblek Materials Needed: Water, Corn Starch, Food Coloring, Sandwich Bags or Plastic Container Instructions: Place 1 cup of cornstarch into a sandwich bag or plastic container. Slowly add in 1/2 cup of water and stir. Lastly, add in a few drops of our choice of food coloring to the mixture. Now, you have ooblek! Girls will be able to play with the final product and see it change its state of matter.
