Start planning your 2015–16 Girl Scout year! Girls and adults, there are opportunities and adventures for you in the Early Fall Preview! Sit down with your girls and parents to explore this sneak peek. To get the most out of the Early Fall Preview use the Activity Finder. It allows you to search for more precise information using your girls’ interests to find events happening in your neighborhood as well as easily register! Registration is now open for events September– December 2015. The full Program and Event Guide will be online and mailed to troop leaders in August to help you plan the rest of your year. Be on the lookout for big events so girls can travel and meet girls from all over Northern California. Throughout the year, new programs may be introduced. Stay up-to-date by using the Activity Finder and watch for program details via e-news, Facebook, Twitter, and other Girl Scout correspondence. The events in the Early Fall Preview are separated by the nationally recognized Pathways. Pathways make it easy to participate in Girl Scouts. In the Early Fall Preview you will see Series, Event, Travel, and Adult. Within the Event Pathway we have highlighted program categories to help you discover girls’ interests. In the Early Fall Preview you will see Business Smarts, Get Outdoors, Growing Strong, and STEM. The categories are defined below to help you navigate this guide: • Business Smarts: Experiences that focus on the 5 essential skills: Goal Setting, Decision Making, Money Management, Business Ethics and People Skills. • Get Outdoors: Adventures that build outdoor skills for girls and/or adults. • Growing Strong: Events that help build self-esteem and healthy living, including art, drama, adventure, sports, or friendships. • STEM: Opportunities to dive into science, technology, engineering, math (Girls Go Tech) as well as environment and conservation, (Green by Nature). • Adult: Events that are for adult volunteers or parents, or events that have an adult component that build skills on working with girls and explore the benefits of Girl Scouting.
We’ve listed information about programs designed just for girls. Girl Scouts of Northern California offers activities council-wide from Eureka to Red Bluff, San Jose to San Francisco, Santa Rosa to Oakland, and all points in between, so that you can discover exciting opportunities, try new things, and develop new friendships in your area. We encourage you to participate in events everywhere!
Important Dates to Remember:
Minimum and maximum attendance requirements exist for all programs. Girl Scouts of Northern California reserves the right to cancel or change any scheduled activities due to lack of enrollment, severe weather, or natural disaster. • Cancellation and refund requests must be made in writing thirty (30) days before the event to receive 50% of registration fees of $10 or more per individual. • No refunds will be issued for no-shows. • The $15 Girl Scout membership dues and $15 council service fee are non-refundable. • All refund requests must be made in writing to: Registration@GirlScoutsNorCal.org. Requests should include member’s name, address, program name, date, and reason for refund.

Because we are all unique, we may have special needs that need to be met so that we can attend an event. Please e-mail Registration@GirlScoutsNorCal.org if you have questions, or to find out whether or not we can accommodate special needs at the event you wish to attend. For events that include food, it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to let us know about dietary restrictions. We are usually able to accommodate many dietary needs such as gluten free, vegetarian, nut allergies, and dairy free options if we know about them in advance. In some cases, the family will be asked to provide supplemental items.

Join us for this exciting STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) career series for Juniors. Female STEM professionals guide girls through special hands-on activities that relate to STEM careers. Presented by the American Association of University Women in Palo Alto on the fourth Monday of September, October, November, and second Monday of December.
The Lead the Way Leadership Conference for Young Women is planned and run by high school girls just like you! Young women meet on a monthly basis to plan and put into action all aspects of the conference. Become part of the planning team and make it the best conference in history. Join one of the exciting committees including: decorations, recreation, registration, and welcoming. Truly take the lead! Meeting dates: Aug 31, Sept 28, Oct 26, and Nov 16, 2015. Jan 11, Jan 25, and Feb 8, 2016.

Teens Take Over! Chicks in Charge is what they call themselves! Girls in this group come from lots of different troops and service units and meet once a month to create and run exciting programs! Make new friends and earn volunteer service hours while making decisions, running events, playing games, snacking on goodies, and winning awesome door prizes. Plus, you get to weigh in on important Council decisions like what new programs to offer. Adults, help steward girls toward leadership! This group meets in Chico, Red Bluff, San Bruno and San Jose. Check the event details and activity finder for the meeting times for your area! Please Note: You must attend monthly meetings and run the programs that you and the team plan for the year.

Take your cookie sale to the next level! Participate in fun, hands-on workshops in marketing, public speaking, goal setting, using technology effectively, or other topics that interest you in this conference style event. Learn from experts, walk away with tools you can use for your cookie sale, and improve your lifelong business skills. Workshops will be separated by level and adults will participate in their own workshops on supporting girls, goal setting, confidence, and perseverance.
Come one, come all! This magical winter wonderland event for Girl Scouts of all ages, friends, and family has handmade crafts and creative knick-knacks for everyone on your holiday list. Peruse the festive holiday lanes, shop 90+ girl-run booths for handmade goods crafted by troops, and enjoy the fun at free activity booths hosted by troops and exciting community partners. Troops planning to run booths must register separately and be accepted by Nov. 13, 2015.

Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador troops: create goods and run a Winterfest sales booths to sell your hand-made items and earn money for troop activities. This is a great way to have fun as you put your goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics into action. Troops must also run a free Activity Booth to entertain and engage families. Each troop must register their booth and have plans approved through the online registration system before Nov. 13, 2015.
Bring a bakery and cookie booth to life as you team with other Girl Scouts and brainstorm about how to start a business, create advertising, and design menus. Discover how and why you would want to be an entrepreneur, while building public speaking, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. Through art, individual and group projects, creativity, and imagination strengthen your self-confidence. Perfect introduction to the skills needed to thrive for our famous Girl Scout Cookie Sale.
Winterfest Activity Booth ONLY Junior troops can host a free activity booth to entertain participants and engage families. Activities should be unique, fun, and appropriate for all ages. Put your decision making, money management, and people skills into action as you take on leadership and have fun at Winterfest! Registration is required at no cost to the troop for an Activity Booth ONLY; the activity plans MUST be approved through the online registration system before November 13, 2015.

Adventures in Archery This monthly archery class at Bothin is a great opportunity to learn new skills or improve your shot. Sign up for one time or come every month for different games and skills! Please Note: Program takes place every 2nd Sunday of the month, and you should register for each date you want to attend.
Archery and Ropes Activity Day Participate together in a challenge on the high ropes course, try your hand at archery, and end your day with s’mores around a campfire! This is an opportunity for girls to bring their special adult for a fun day of activities, challenges, and bonding. Please Note: Non-Girl Scout adults are welcome. Bring a sack lunch to enjoy between activities.

Have fun, earn a unique patch, and make a difference at our camps! Based on seasonal needs, projects may include trail improvements, painting, or general maintenance. No experience required; hands-on instruction provided as needed. Everyone is welcome: all skill levels, ages, families, troops, and adults. Ready to take your outdoor skills to the next level? Join us for a day of outdoor fun to learn wilderness techniques like shelter building, rainy-day fires, wilderness first aid, “Leave No Trace”, and how to bake cookies in a box oven! Troop leaders, learn some easy tips to continue outdoor experiences with your girls throughout the year.

Build courage, confidence, and character on our ropes courses. Gear up with your instructors to learn safety on the course before climbing into the sky up to 45 feet! Participants at Bothin will do both the zip line and the static course while participants at Skylark Ranch will have the opportunity to try three elements.
Dynamic Buddy Day Need a challenge? Bring your BFF and scale to new heights on the Bothin dynamic course. Up in the air you’ll have a chance to try to scale the Vertical Playpen with your partner and sit in our bench in the sky, 65 feet in the air! Then face off against other buddy pairs in fun challenges.

Amazing Race: Film Crew Get up close to the Girl Scout Amazing Race participants and chronicle their thrilling journey! Capture the race using your own cameras and create a documentary for the promotion of this amazing event. Girls will learn navigation, film making, and interview techniques. Fee includes group sleeping arrangements, public transportation costs, and some meals. You will use your own vehicle and gas to travel 300–500 miles during the weekend.

Girls’ Friendship Without the Drama Fourth through seventh grade girls know that friendships have ups and downs. When friends aren’t acting like friends, what can you do to make things better? Plenty! That’s what this workshop is about. You’ll learn how friendship is a two-way street in which we all deserve respect. Author and tween expert, Annie Fox, also gives parents tips to understand you better, so they can help you deal with feelings and friendship drama in ways that make you feel good about yourself.

The Girl Scout Amazing Race (based on the TV show) is a full weekend of physical and mental challenges. Girls are in charge of navigation and decision-making; adults will participate in some tasks. Girls will develop critical thinking skills while solving challenges. Program cost includes entrance/ activity fees, group sleeping, and some meals. Teams use their own vehicles and gas, travelling 300-500 miles during the weekend. Each team must always have only 1 adult and 3–4 girls.

Monarch Butterfly Walk
If the idea of going on a treasure hunt seems intriguing, then this is the activity for you. Give your inner-sleuth a chance to come out and play at the Hayward Shoreline. You will discover what geo-caching is, then put your new found skills to work and track a cache down along the shoreline.
Flying thousands of miles at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour and a mile high in the sky, monarch butterflies return annually to the same trees at the San Leandro Marina to hunker down for the winter. Learn about the mysterious migrations of the monarch butterfly from a butterfly expert at this amazing location.

Going Green Brainy Birds! at Walden West The Abby Sobrato Science and Sustainability Center is excited to host a program all about birds! Learn about the industrious and expert nest builders whose beaks and tongues are perfectly adapted to take advantage of their favorite food and some of the local habitats where they live. Create your own bird nests, dissect albatross boluses, and learn how to protect the environment where these cool creatures live. This is a great way to help you earn the Animal Habitats badge. Call of the Sea: Sailing Investigation Climb aboard Seaward and cruise the bay on this beautiful sailboat with your whole troop. During this “Oceanographer for a Day” program, learn how to sail and all about the ecology of San Francisco Bay. Conduct water quality tests, catch plankton, and learn about the watershed of the Bay Area. This bay exploration is a fantastic chance for girl scouts to earn part of their Animal Habitats or Independence Badges. Please Note: Badges not provided.

This is a great way to get started with the Brownie Bugs badge!
The Abby Sobrato Science and Sustainability Center is excited to announce a program all about trees! Participate in a tree treasure hunt. Work with wood by hammering and sanding to connect wood types with common household and school objects. Participate in the cycle of growing a new plant to help Earth. Are you ready to design your own entertainment company? Begin by learning about classic animation styles and then get to animate your own artwork. Next, build prototypes of rollercoasters while learning the science behind the screams. Finally, make custom 3-D glasses and learn how to make your own 3-D images! Little Pig Civil Construction Fun Day!

Science is all around us! Begin by making raisins and pepper dance using the amazing properties of density and electricity. Next, become kitchen chemists and use every day pantry items to experiment with delicious treats and blow up a balloon using no breath. Finally, learn how science can be used to create toys by making your very own silly putty!
Did you ever wonder why one of the Three Little Pigs’ houses was the strongest? Join the Piglet Construction Company, play with forces, shapes and materials, and then put it all into action! We will build a gumdrop dome, a newspaper skyscraper, and build and test the Three Little Pigs’ houses to see if they can withstand the elements.
In this program try on the many hats of a special agent! To begin, explore the investigation techniques of a fingerprint analyst by studying and comparing fingerprints. Next, practice the art of forensic drawing by sketching a “suspect” as described by a “key witness.” Finally, try forensic chemistry to identify an ink stain found at a crime scene.

Investigate the world of flight while building a powered model airplane. Climb into the museum’s flight simulators and complete a realistic flight simulation. Learn all about the contributions of Bay Area women to aviation. This is a great side trip for the Reach Out and Try Out awards in the Junior aMuse Journey!
Spend a day with SJSU engineering students exploring each stage of the green design process, from brainstorming an idea to creating a floor plan to building with recycled materials, as you construct a green studio. Consider the ways in which you can change your habits to lessen your environmental impact, and explore a range of engineering careers.
Do you have what it takes to be a tech detective? Begin by sharpening your observation skills through brain challenging puzzles. Next, learn how to obtain and analyze fingerprints from a crime scene. Finally, learn about DNA: what it is, what it does, and how it helps solve crimes. Then perform an experiment to extract real DNA!

Discover hidden gardens and plantations that are hundreds of years old. Visit the first Girl Scout Headquarters and participate in the Girl Scout Heritage Visit at Juliette Gordon Low’s Birthplace. Camp Work Parties
Fall Festival
Have fun, earn a unique patch, and make a difference at our camps! Based on seasonal needs, projects may include trail improvements, painting, or general maintenance. No experience required; hands-on instruction provided as needed. Everyone is welcome: all skill levels, ages, families, troops, and adults. If you have a specific skill (i.e. electric, carpentry), please email us at camppropertyvolunteer@ girlscoutsnorcal.org. Inquire about free camping. Your contributions are visible and valued!
Fall Festival is a weekend learning retreat available to adult volunteers. It has many workshops to choose from such as crafts, troop program, outdoor skills, and much more. Meals, lodging and classes are included in one low price. In additional to your classes, you will enjoy an evening of fun, games, campfire and more! Fall Festival will be held at the Whiskeytown N.E.E.D. Camp located 12 miles west of Redding on Saturday, October 10, through Sunday, October 11, with the option of arriving Friday night, October 9.
Invest in your Girls! While girls are diving deep into a Journey topic you will get the opportunity to explore best practices that help them hone their leadership skills as they gear up to earn Girl Scouting’s highest awards! You will participate in concurrent workshops covering everything from how to implement the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, positive youth develpment, Take Action projects, and the Awards. You also learn how to bring Journey Weekends to your neighborhood.
Please Note: Adult to girl ratio is 1:5. Adult supervision is needed.

Teens Take Over! Girls in this group come from different troops and service units and meet once a month to create and run exciting Council programs, supported by caring adults! You make new friends just like the girls and take pride in stewarding the Girl-Led Process which results in amazing things. Help lay the groundwork and watch girls make decisions, weigh in on council topics, run events and share experiences. These groups meet in Chico, Red Bluff, San Bruno and San Jose. Check the event details and activity finder for the meeting times for your area!

Take your cookie sale to the next level! Participate in fun, hands-on workshops in marketing, public speaking, goal setting, using technology effectively, or other topics that interest you in this conference style event. Learn from experts, walk away with tools you can use for your cookie sale, and improve your lifelong business skills. Workshops will be separated by level and adults will participate in their own workshops on supporting girls, goal setting, confidence, and perseverance.
Ready to help your troop take their outdoor skills to the next level? Get in on one of these Get Outdoor (G.O.) Initiative outdoor development days. Working side by side with your girls we will have a day of outdoor fun to learn a variety of wilderness or camp craft skills. Plus, learn some easy tips to continue outdoor experiences throughout the year. See the descriptions in the Events section for details on activities.
