Introduction and icebreaker:
Your family might not be able to have a pet right now. That’s okay! You can do this badge with a friend or neighbor’s pet, a classroom pet, or another pet that could use your help.
If you could have any animal as a pet, which would you choose?
Steps:
1. Find out what care different pets need.
2. Keep a pet comfy.
3. Help a pet stay healthy and safe.
4. Make a pet feel loved.
5. Feed a pet.
Activity 1: Play Pet Bingo.
Supplies: Pet Bingo sheets, writing supplies, device connected to Internet
Pets are as different as the people who love them. Play Pet Bingo to find out which pet would be the best fit for you. You can play online, at a pet supply store, or at a veterinarian’s office.
Activity 2: Make hamster bedding.
Supplies: White paper (10 per Girl Scout), disposable bowl (one per Girl Scout), plastic sandwich bag (one per Girl Scout), water (one cup per Girl Scout)
Pets need a clean and comfortable place to live—if their cage, crate, or tank is dirty, they can get sick. Hamsters use bedding to dig, burrow, and go to the bathroom. Make your own hamster bedding by cutting paper into small strips, soaking it in a bowl of water, and squishing the paper together into a golf ball-size clump. Take your clump home in a plastic bag. Allow the clump to dry for a few days, then break it apart into small pieces. These pieces will make great bedding for a hamster. Use it for your own hamster, share with a friend, or donate to a local shelter!
To keep hamsters safe, use plain white paper that has not been written or printed on.
Activity 3: Share how to be responsible when taking a pet outdoors.
Supplies: Coloring supplies, paper
As a group, brainstorm a list of ways to keep yourself and your pet safe while taking a walk. Have a Girl Scout or a leader write the ideas down on a piece of paper so that the group can see. Have each Girl Scout pick one safety tip and create an illustrated poster to teach others! Once finished, these can be posted at your troop meeting space or combined into a book, or each Girl Scout can share their poster with a friend who has a pet.
Activity 4: Make a simple pet toy.
Supplies: Fleece cut into 1 sq ft pieces (two per Girl Scout), stuffing, scissors, high-quality or fabric scissors (optional) Make a tie blanket-style toy. Cut two pieces of fleece so they are the same size and shape. Layer the pieces and cut 1-inchlong fringes around the outside. Knot the fringes together to join the pieces of fleece, leaving part of one side open to allow stuffing. Fill each toy with fleece. Finish knotting the fringes. Give the toy to your own dog or cat, share with a friend who has a pet, or donate to a local shelter!
Activity 5: Share a pet’s eating habits.
Supplies: None
One of the most important responsibilities of a pet owner is knowing what their pet eats, what it can’t eat, and how much it needs to eat. And, of course, making sure there’s food when the pet gets hungry!
Ask the Girl Scouts:
• What pets do you know?
• What do they eat?
• How much do they get fed?
Wrap-up:
End the meeting with a friendship circle and a friendship squeeze. Have the Girl Scouts help with any clean-up tasks. Talk about what you are doing at the next meeting, get their ideas for activities, and share upcoming meeting dates, homework, volunteer needs, and other relevant information with caregivers as they arrive for pick-up. Consider sending a follow-up text with this information if needed.

Actividad 2: Fabrica ropa de cama para hámster.
Materiales: Hojas de papel blancas (10 por Girl Scout), recipiente desechable (uno por Girl Scout), bolsa de plástico para sándwich (una por Girl Scout), agua (una taza por Girl Scout)
Las mascotas necesitan un lugar limpio y cómodo para vivir; si su jaula, cajón o tanque está sucio, pueden enfermarse. Los hámsters usan ropa de cama (ejemplo: aserrín) para cavar, hacer madrigueras e ir al baño. Fabrica tu propia ropa de cama para hámster, corta papel en pequeñas tiras, sumérgelas en un recipiente con agua y aplasta el papel hasta formar una masa del tamaño de una pelota de golf. Como grupo, hagan una lluvia de idea de cómo mantener a tu mascota y a ti a salvo mientras caminan para dar un paseo. Pídele a una girl scout o una líder que escriba las ideas en una hoja para que el grupo pueda verlas. ¡Haz que cada girl scout elija un consejo de seguridad y diseñe un cartel ilustrativo para enseñar a otros! Una vez terminado, pueden decidir colocarlos en el espacio de la reunión de la tropa, incluirlos en un libro o cada girl scout puede enseñárselo a una amiga que tenga una mascota.
Actividad 4: Crea un juguete sencillos de mascota.
Materiales: Tela polar en pedazos de 1 pie cuadrado (dos por girl scout), relleno, tijeras, tijeras de acero o para tela (opcional)
Haz una manta de flequillos de juguete. Corta dos piezas de tela polar para que sean del mismo tamaño y forma. Coloca las piezas en capas y corta flequillos de 1 pulgada de largo alrededor del exterior. Anuda los flequillos para unir los trozos cortados de la tela, dejando una parte de lado abierto para poder rellenar. Rellena cada juguete.
