10 CAR Tips for Buying a By: Josie Moyer

1

If you’re not in a rush to buy a car, the end of the year is a great time to get a deal. If a dealer has this year and the incoming year’s vehicles on its lot, the older cars are going to be priced to move. Dealerships are likely to offer specials and incentives at the end of the year.

If you’re looking for more time and personal attention from a car salesperson, visit the dealership on a weekday afternoon instead of a busy weekend.

2

Never buy a car you haven’t test-driven. If possible, bring your family with you and have them try all the seats. It’s better to find out that your kid’s car seat or your two teenagers don’t fit in the backseat before you buy the car, not after.

Ask for an extended test drive. A good salesperson will accommodate your needs and some dealerships will even let you take the car home for a day. During the test drive, drive your normal morning or evening route to get a better idea of what the ride will be like.

Before you buy, check with your insurance company for rates on the car you’re interested in buying before you buy it. Some cars cost more to insure than others.

If listening to music in the car is important to you, bring some along and test the audio system during your test drive. Stereo specs won’t tell you about sound quality or how easy/difficult it is to connect your phone to the system.

6

Don’t focus on only one aspect of a deal such as a low selling price. Consider everything that’s being offered to you including trade-in values, interest rates, maintenance packages, extended warranties, and additional costs. Don’t overbuy and don’t make an emotional purchase. The most expensive model on the lot isn’t necessarily the best one for you, and you can’t take it back later when you decide you can’t afford it. Make sure the car you’re buying really meets your needs and don’t be wooed by brand or status. You’re going to be paying off the car for a few years so take your time and make the right choice.

8

9

Don’t detail your car or fix something minor before trading it in. The dealership can probably do the repairs for less, and it’s not likely you’ll get back in trade-in value what you paid to make the repairs.

Be willing to walk away. If your instinct tells you something’s off about a sales pitch or a sales person, trust your instincts. Don’t be afraid to request a different salesperson or to go to another dealership.
