We asked these local businesses to tell us what’s trending in their shops right now. Here’s what they had to say. HAFALOHA Intertwining their Hawaiian and Chamorro heritage in both marriage and business, the Hafaloha brand was created by husband and wife team Leonard “Len” Kaae and Tara Unpingco Kaae. Hafaloha serves as a creative outlet to express ideas, humor and their love of the island life. The brand began as an online clothing and merchandise retailer in 2013, and in November 2015, Len and Tara opened their first brick and mortar store, located in the Flame Tree Plaza across from Pacific Islands Club in Tumon.
Hafaloha celebrates individuality and a lifestyle that embraces the hafa adai and aloha spirit.
Hafaloha serves up soft, snowy Hawaiian-style shave ice, sweetened by flavored syrups made in-house and piled high over a creamy scoop of vanilla ice cream. With more than 40 flavors to choose from, you can either create your own masterpiece or try one of their bestselling flavors such as latiya, orange dreamsicle and strawberry shortcake. For those in the mood for a treat that’s both fresh and nutritious, Hafaloha also offers a customizable acai bowl with fresh fruits and add-ons poured over acai, granola and honey.
RUN GUAM
The shop also carries an array of merchandise featuring original designs and the company is gearing up to expand its clothing line to include cut and sew shirts and more. Hafaloha recently unveiled a line of wooden frame sunglasses that are made of bamboo, African hardwood, teak, rosewood, and skateboard deck, all 100% polarized and 100% stylish. 6 | Guam Super Shopper | March 11, 2016
“We hope to be ambassadors to our heritage and homeland, spreading the spirit and culture of what it is like to be from the islands,” said Len Kaae. Check out Hafaloha online at hafaloha.com, facebook.com/ HafalohaClothing and @hafaloha on Instagram.
Tired of wearing nondescript athletic wear at running events and races, three local runners set out to create their own brand of performance athletic apparel that features unique style elements inspired by Guam’s landscape and cultural heritage. And thus, Run Guam Inc. was born. The three founding members of Run Guam – Derek Mandell, Desmond Mandell, and Sherwin Paet – are transforming the island’s fitness scene with their line of quality athletic performance singlets, long sleeves, hats and backpacks. Run Guam apparel is designed by local runners and maintains the industry standard in athletic fabric with DRIKWIK moisture-wicking technology.
Clothes on this page and facing page provided by Primo Surf, Hafaloha, Run Guam, Fokai, Stickers Express and A&L Crafts.
“Our customers love the material our products are made of, which keeps them comfortable and seen during their workouts,” said Sherwin Paet. Run Guam doesn’t have a physical store location, but orders can be placed easily online at werunguam.com and picked up locally 2-3 business days after purchase. There is no shipping or handling fee for local orders. “The sport of running on Guam itself is growing which is great to see! More people are coming out and challenging themselves to live a healthy lifestyle. Whether it is running a 5K or completing a marathon, it’s just exciting to see people getting out there and participating in physical activities,” said Paet. For news about Run Guam pop up locations, promotions and future product releases, follow @runguam on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
STICKERS EXPRESS Since 2002, Stickers Express has made it easy for islanders to express their island pride through stickers, car decals and t-shirts. The shop, located on the second floor of the Agana Shopping Center across Playport, has over 130 original design stickers for Guam, CNMI, Micronesia and other neighboring pacific islands. Off-island customers can order from the shop’s online store at stickersxpress.com, which ships globally. Stickers Express also prints customized stickers, decals and t-shirts, which owner Elaine Takashy says has become a trend.
“We get a lot of custom decal orders from car clubs, sports teams and even families who want a unified sticker with their family name or kids names. It’s also becoming a trend to order a small batch of custom t-shirts for special occasions like birthday parties and even funerals,” said Takashy. Whether you need just one or a hundred stickers, the team at Stickers Express can take a picture, graphic, logo, even a sketch, and transform it into a 3M vinyl decal that has an outdoor life span of about 7 years. Stickers Express also takes orders for small and large quantity silkscreen or heat press custom t-shirts that start as low as $12 per shirt.
PRIMO SURF Since the 1980s, Primo Surf has been Guam’s premier source for quality surf and skateboard gear and apparel. For clothing, footwear and accessories by top and emerging brands such Vissla, RVKA, Billabong, O’Neill, Roxy, Jansport, Liive, Carve, Sin, Dirty Dog and more, check out Primo Surf at the Micronesia Mall or Agana Shopping Center. Primo Surf is also your source for skateboard decks, wheels, bearings, and trucks. For ocean adventurers, Primo Surf in the Agana Shopping Center has everything you need to take your open water experience to the next level. The standup paddling trend is surging right now and Primo Surf can help you choose a paddleboard and paddle from their collection. Manta body boards, leashes, and Cobra open-top kayaks can also be found at the shop’s Agana location, as well as life jackets, booties and other gear. March 11, 2016 | Guam Super Shopper | 7
For friends and family far and near, the best gifts are the ones found O.O.G. or “Only on Guam.” It’s the small, special items that remind you of Guam’s gorgeous, white sandy beaches; its rich, delicious local cuisine; and its kind, friendly people. And we know just exactly where to get those gifts filled with the hafa adai spirit that your loved ones will appreciate any time of the year. Combining Guam’s love of food with two of the island’s most iconic symbols, latte stones and sling stones, locally owned company Everything Guam offers a unique twist on a classic treat. Choose between the latte stone cookies – shaped like latte stones and dipped in chocolate – or the sling stone cookies – coconut chocolate chip cookies with macadamia nut – to give your friends for a taste of island pride with every bite. At Guam Premium Chocolate, Director of Marketing William Ymesei said their chocolates, made of the highest quality, are a creamier, more decadent product for both tourists and locals alike. “Everybody loves chocolate,” Ymesei said. “Our packaging is always something representative of the island with local imagery, and there’s a long tradition of visitors to Guam giving chocolate as gifts.” But for those living farther rather than nearer, when that overwhelming feeling of mahalang brings them back to their roots, local company Love from Guam offers photos, cards, and jewelry to help bridge the gap. Proudly stamped with the Guam Product Seal, Love from Guam’s products are a great way to display the island’s sunsets, flowers, and local wildlife in the home. And its jewelry, ranging from pink plumeria photo necklaces to tasi inspired earrings, help those living away from the island wear their love of Guam daily.

= DREAM HOME STARTER HOME By Josie Moyer
I
t may be a great time for buyers looking for a starter home. This cozy 2-bedroom/1.5 bathroom home on Sta. Bernadette Street in Yigo has the lot size and the potential to develop into your ultimate dream home. “There is so much potential with this property,” said Absolute Realty agent Cecille Torres. “This is a great starter home for a small yet growing family because the property sits on more than a quarter acre of land. So, if the buyer wants to expand the home in the future or even subdivide the property and build a second home, there is space to do that.” Inside, the fully concrete home has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, ceramic and vinyl flooring, and lots of storage space. The home is move-in ready with a refrigerator, stove and microwave oven in place. Outside, the house features a carport, typhoon shutters and a half-bathroom convenient for outdoor entertaining. The large, partially fenced yard has room for a garden, playground, outdoor retreat, work shed, and everything else you might dream up. You won’t have to venture far from home for the necessities, either. The house is located near churches, schools, Andersen Air Force Base, Ritidian Beach, Yigo Pay-Less, restaurants, retail shops and more. You’ve dreamed for years of buying your first home, and now it’s time. With over 10 years of experience in property rentals and sales, Cecille Torres will guide you through the buying process every step of the way. THE MARKET SHIFT By Deanna Palmer 2016 President, Guam Association of Realtors Associate Broker, REALTOR®, CRS, CIAS RE/MAX DIAMOND REALTY The most important piece of information about Guam’s real
Pictures help sell properties...
estate market is that the market has already shifted. The number of owners with listings showing in the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) is down in all areas. The reduction in the number of available units in part is causing a small increase in value. Remember, real estate is an industry in which supply and demand cause price changes. As the number of listings increase, your property will then be on the market longer unless it is in superior condition compared to the other options on the market.
As an owner who wants to sell or lease their property, you need to be working with an expert to guide you and advise you in regarding to getting your property ready to market and deciding on the proper market value. Just because the number of available units is low does not mean you can get by with a property selling within 90 days when it is not ready. Buyers who need to get a loan will need a property that will pass all the inspections and an appraisal, which the financial institutions require. Even all cash buyers are looking for properties that do not need very many improvements to be able to occupy the home. And properties that are owner or tenant occupied, which of course need an appointment, are even more challenging to market and sell. Remember that buyers and tenants have access to all the pictures in MLS through many local websites. Pictures help sell properties when the pictures are a fair representation of the property. Buyers and tenants spend time viewing their options both online and driving by areas they want to move to on their own. Then they contact an agent and give each property a viewing of only about 10 minutes, less when it is not ready. Take advantage of their viewing time by being prepared. Guam is going into our moving season soon. Take the time and a little money needed to prepare your properties and be ready. It is going to be an active season. Call a REALTOR® today to help you.
