Sweet greetings to all our GSS readers! If there’s something you won’t be short of this issue, it’s sugar. Welcome to The Sweets Issue. The nice thing about scoping out the local market for where to find the perfect dessert is that you happen to get some of the most beautiful photos as well. Our team didn’t just focus on the product this issue, we focused on the person. With all things delectable, there comes the person that creates the work of art. From the extravagance of the Tumon buffet line to the cozy kitchens of our local bakers, we were able to find all types of treats appealing to both taste and sight. Donuts, cupcakes, ice cream, chocolate, cakes – we have really only scratched the sweet surface, but it’s a start. Skim through and find out where you can grab and go and where you can sit and dine. Either way, you’ll be happy.

Food from Dusit Thani’s Aqua buffet.
Tables lined with individual desserts, presentation cakes, double chocolate fountains, and more leave the mind astonished and the taste buds anticipating “a dessert experience” right when you walk through the door for brunch.
For those looking for an interesting international flare, husband and wife team Michael and Shizuka Louboutin at Patisserie PariSco offer a unique mix of desserts with hints of Japanese and French influence, reflecting both of their cultures and experience. “It’s because we travel a lot and tasted so many different pastries from all over the world, especially the ones from Japan and Europe,” said co-owner and pastry chef Shizuka Louboutin. “Those two places have the best pastries in looks and taste.”
Lemon Meringue Tarts
Their shop located behind the Oka Payless Supermarket in Tamuning satisfies all the senses. The smoothness of the crème brulee cheesecake brings piece of mind with each bite. The smell of freshly cut strawberries lining the tart shells excites the taste buds. And the playful colors of the fruity pebble macarons bring out the inner child in us all. “Baking is something that makes me and the people around me happy,” Shizuka said.

Hitting the Sweet Spot
By Cheerful Catunao
Sometimes it takes more than a stroll to one village to satisfy your sweet tooth cravings. If you’re looking to hit the sweet spot, we’ll tell you right here. For chocolates, the American Chocolate Factory is already hitting the sweet spot for locals and tourists. Founded in 2006, they locally produce chocolate made with the highest-grade cocoa in the market. Made with no preservatives, each bite reveals the genuine richness of chocolate.
Payless Supermarkets, Kmart, and ABC stores. “We’re proud that our locally made product is not only sold in Guam but in Taiwan where we meet high standards in ensuring our chocolate has no additives. The locals and tourists, especially the kids, love it,” says owner Rich Huang.
Their dark and milk chocolate is mixed with flavors such as pistachio, coffee bean, and macadamia nut, an island favorite. Products can be found at
For donuts, nothing is more satisfying than hot and fresh donuts from Daddy’s Donuts in Tamuning. “I use my Grandfather’s recipe,” says owner Evan Metzger. “To ensure each donut is hot, fresh, and light, we make small batches throughout the day.”
Since opening just two years ago, the shop has offered 70 different glazes! The glazes popular among patrons are coconut, mango, taro, and guava, those made with local produce. They take custom orders and offer free delivery for orders over five dozen.
Additionally, their innovative glazes set them apart. The shop offers five different glaze flavors daily, and flavors change every two weeks.
But if you want something cool, check out the Cold Stone Creamery at Guam Premier Outlets in Tamuning. “We make our ice cream in our stores every day. Besides ice cream, we offer shakes, yogurt, smoothies, plated desserts, cookie sandwiches, cupcakes, ice cream cakes, and more,” says Manager Jason Chua.
which is an experience customers always enjoy. “Couple that with great service of the Cold Stone branded 'Experience Factor,' customers enjoy watching our crew tossing and flipping their sweet creations,” says Chua.
Customers can customize their ice cream and yogurt by mixing in over 30 ingredients,
Whether you’re in the mood for chocolate, donuts, or cool treats, the island has locally made treats that are perfect for hitting the sweet spot.

L
aid-back island style mingles with bustling “city” life in this recently renovated condo that’s located up the hill behind Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores Church in Tumon.
Bright and spacious, this 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom unit boasts lofty ceilings, tons of closet and storage space, a brand new kitchen, and a remodeled bathroom. The master bedroom features a walk-in closet, private balcony and full bathroom. Two additional bedrooms allow for guest rooms, home office, children’s playroom or any combination of possibilities. The open living and dining floor plan was designed to feel airy and comfortable with room to move. The unit also offers the added convenience of a washer and dryer. Living at the center of Tumon certainly comes with a long list of advantages, and proximity is key. From the moment you step out the front door (from which you can see Two Lovers Point), this 3rd-floor unit is a leisurely stroll to the beach, church and bank, not to mention loads of restaurants, convenience stores and nightlife hotspots. You won’t have to fight traffic or search for parking when the next Tumon festival or block party rolls around—you’ll just walk there. Yet, while this unit is situated so close to the beating heart of Tumon, it is far enough away from the main strip to be the quiet and tranquil retreat you’re searching for. For the fit-oriented and pet owners, Tumon is well-lit and well-paved—perfect for running and dog-walking. Whether you’re looking for a long-term rental or are only staying a few months, Century 21 Realty can work with your leasing requirements and even assist in furnishing the unit for the duration of your stay. Contact Christopher Felix, President and Principal Broker of Century 21 Realty at 689-2121 or email remco@guam.net. MLS# 15-2446 / 15-3991

By Clare Delgado, CENTURY 21 Commonwealth Realty It can be easy to get lost and confused during the home buying process. Proper planning is paramount. It’s also helpful to learn from other people’s mistakes. Here are some of the most common errors people make when shopping for a new home.
1 2
Not budgeting for everything.
Yes, this sounds obvious, but many people forget about some of the costs of buying a home. There are added costs such as furniture and appliances, DIY projects, moving fees, or your first mortgage payment. This last one is especially important—setting a budget may help you determine how much you can comfortably afford to pay for your mortgage.
Neglecting your credit score.
Your credit score will play a major role in the home buying process. This 3-digit number might be the thing that keeps you from your new home! Credit reports often contain errors or misinformation, so it’s important to retrieve your report ahead of time and fix any errors before sending it out to lenders. Looking at your credit reports may also give you a better idea of what interest rates you can expect so you can make room for them in your budget.
3 4
Trusting verbal agreements.
A home seller can verbally accept your bid and still turn around and give it to someone else if a higher bidder comes along. So before you celebrate your new home, make sure you’ve signed paperwork!
Skipping the home inspection.
You can’t expect the seller to tell you about all the potential problems you might face if you buy their home. There might even be issues with the house that the seller isn’t aware of, which is why it’s crucial to hire an inspector to take a look through the house. An inspector will examine the overall foundation and structural features of a house. It’s their job to find these areas of concern so that you don’t have to worry about them later on.
5
Sweating the small things.
Don’t like the color of a house or the wallpaper inside? Is there something about the kitchen that you just can’t stand? Don’t sweat the small things! Focus instead on the location and the overall structure of the house. Once you move in you can change the small things you don’t like and make your house a home.
If you avoid these mistakes and work closely with a CENTURY 21® Affiliated Sales Associate, you may just find the home you’ve been searching for.
“Proper planning is paramount.”
