Gundega Strautmane, a Latvian textile artist and designer, visualizes social and physical networks in a show called Relational Ornaments. The networks are created using various sized pins to depict nodes and threads connecting them to show relationships. Bringing visualization into the tactile world lends it a weight not able to be achieved on a computer screen. It allows the viewer to pause, spend time with the information, feel it, sense it in a more holistic way. The placement of pins and threads is imprecise because they are placed by hand giving the work a very natural, organic feel rather than the rigidity of the exact calculations of programming.

ARTIST BIO I have a master’s degree in textile art from Latvian Art Academy part of my studies I have spent in Berlin University of Arts (DE). I think, my works can be considered as "the modernization of tradition". In my art projects I use traditional textile, graphics, and photo manipulation techniques in order to reveal my digitally generated concepts. I like working with different codes, sound tracks and data visualisations. I have had several soloexhibitions and workshops in Latvia and abroad: 2016 Daugavpils Mark Rothko centre exhibition Love infinity, 2015 Art Academy of Latvia Sounds of Rēzekne, 2010 exibition in the frames of 6th conference of the SLSAeu (European Society for Literature, Science and the Arts) Textures, etc. I have had public presentation about my work in electronic-text+textiles in Riga, (e-t+t focuses on investigations of the interrelationships between text and textile practices within technological and electronic environments) Latvia, 3rd Contemporary Moscow Art biennal Russia and etc. I am a lecturer at the Art Academy of Latvia.

Visualisations of social networks created with InFlow, an inventory managemet software, in the show called Relational Ornaments was exhibited in 2010 in Latvian contemporary Art Centre Riga Latvia. During this project, Gundega worked with several blind persons in Riga, Latvia when developing these art pieces. By touching her artwork the blind are able to SEE the visualizations!
