Required text: The FOA Reference Guide to Fiber Optics written by Mr. Jim Hayes. ▪▪ Instructor: Peter Morcombe has over 24 years experience in high tech telecommunications and computers. He had responsibility for over 500 projects in 18 countries including the 140 Mbps fiber optic link from Hitchin to Stevenage in 1977, the ME29 computer project in 1980 and the Duke University Free Electron Laser in 1990. Peter spent 15 years developing lasers and picosecond streak cameras. His fiber optics experience includes the manufacture of fiber, fiber optic cable, terminal equipment and complete systems installation. Peter worked with many of the fiber optic pioneers including Charles Kao and David Payne. He worked on TAT-8, the first long haul submarine fiber optic system and on many terrestrial fiber projects. His teaching experience includes “Fiber To The Home”. Peter’s professional qualifications include IEE, IEEE and LEOS.

CERTIFIED FIBER OPTICS TECHNICIAN (CFOT) This introductory 3-day fiber optic tech course is designed for anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optic Technician. This Fiber Optic Training combines theory and 85% hands-on activities to prepare the student to take the CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) test that is sanctioned by the FOA (Fiber Optics Association) and given and graded the final class day. ▪▪ Prerequisite: Basic Computer Knowledge

CERTIFIED FIBER OPTICS SPECIALIST IN TESTING & MAINTENANCE (CFOS/T) This 2-day (16-hour) program is designed to offer specialist fiber optics training to anyone involved with the testing and maintenance of fiber optics networks. This advanced fiber optics training is strictly a practical course, but includes more background information than is typical in basic courses to allow the student to understand what they are testing and how to troubleshoot problems in long-haul and short-haul fiber optics networks. ▪▪ Prerequisites: FOA CFOT Course or any other Formal Fiber Optics Training Course within previous 6 months, or 1 Year Fiber Optics Related Experience. Upon successful completion, this program is recognized for BICSI CECs (Continuing Education Credits): RCDD 14, RITP – 14, OSP 14, INST 14, TECH 14, Cert. Trainer 14.

CERTIFIED FIBER OPTICS SPECIALIST IN SPLICING (CFOS/S) This 2-day Splicing Specialist Training includes a complete PowerPoint presentation explaining the importance of high performance splicing and further details the points necessary to achieve these splices. The depth of this presentation is much greater than most textbooks and provides background information about splicing that is very important to the student. ▪▪ Prerequisites: CFOT Course or any other Formal Fiber Optics Training Course within previous 6 months, or 1 Year Fiber Optics Related Experience. If the student is not a CFOT registered with the FOA, he/she must pass the Basic CFOT Exam taken prior to registering this Splicing Specialist (CFOS/S) certification with the FOA.
