Empowering White Educators to Work with Youth-at-Risk Arguably, one of the most prevalent educational issues in American schools relates to addressing achievement, recruitment, and retention for students of color in post-secondary education. Similarly, research suggests that American students in general, and students of color in particular, will have white educators and professors for over 78% of their P-17 educational experience. While scholars and educators have critically emphasized the impact of race/ethnicity on leadership, student success, and achievement outcomes, we have failed to offer culturally affirming strategies to empower urban and rural teachers to effectively use privilege and position to address challenges that under-represented students face in the educational system. The presenter will discuss research and data-driven strategies that: (1) facilitate new levels of consciousness regarding inclusion, equity, and organizational change; (2) empower participants to become catalysts for equity & inclusion-oriented education through leadership development strategies. Through the use of instructional technology, audience interaction, and storytelling, this challenging and candid presentation invites participants to engage in a critical dialogue forum related to deconstructing internal and external barriers that exist for white educational leaders. 12 – 1:30 p.m.

Develop methods to increase the effectiveness of school-wide PBIS at the classroom level.

Innovative Practices in School-wide PBIS

Understand and implement strategies for individual populations of children.

Response to Intervention (RtI) is intended to be a process for providing a continuum of academic and behavioral interventions. While the majority of districts have a clear innovative academic interventions firmly rooted in data-based decision-making, most districts revert to more reactionary and antiquated behavioral interventions when discipline is necessary. In the absence of innovative practices, districts are at a disadvantage in terms of decision-making and open to more challenges regarding behavioral interventions. This session will challenge conventional thinking in terms of discipline in schools. The goal of this session will be to highlight practices that are not effective in addressing behavioral issues and suggest new methods of approaching discipline in school.

Understand and implement strategies for building district-level capacity to sustain school-wide PBIS.

PRE-CONFERENCE PRESENTATION

A guiding document will be provided and each step will be presented with examples from real schools. Finally, recommendations for promoting sustainability across years will be provided.

Dr. Eric Landers, Associate Professor, College of Education, Department of Teaching & Learning, Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA

Investigating Bullying in Schools Schools have a responsibility to protect students from the physical and psychological effects of bullying. When confronted with repetitive behaviors intended to harm, many students do not have the skill set to combat bullying behaviors. In order to lessen the impact of bullying behaviors in schools, educators must be equipped with the necessary skills to investigate and determine if a situation is truly bullying or simply conflict. This session will discuss school-wide strategies and techniques for investigating bullying in schools. Practical and implementable skills will be provided.
