MARK P. BECKER GSU PRESIDENT

S

ince beginning his tenure as Georgia State University’s seventh president in January 2009, President Mark P. Becker has provided a vision for the future of Georgia State University and led the institution into a period of marked growth and advancement. Reflecting his vision of the urban public research university for the 21st century, the university adopted a dynamic 10-year strategic plan that has Georgia State well on its way to becoming one of the nation’s premier urban research universities. As a first generation college student who began his educational career at a community college, Becker is personally and professionally committed to ensuring that students of all economic backgrounds succeed and are given opportunities to compete on a level playing field. Under his leadership, Georgia State’s graduation rate has already increased by 10 percent, and the university is becoming a national model for undergraduate education. It leads the nation in eliminating disparities in graduation rates based on race or ethnicity, and, as one of the most diverse universities in America, is first in the nation among non-profit institutions in graduating AfricanAmerican students. By promoting the achievements of the university, making it more visible locally and nationally, and demonstrating the value of a Georgia State degree, the university under Becker’s leadership has set a series of university records for enrollment, graduation rates and total graduates. Becker has also placed high priority on ensuring financial support for students, and as a result need- and meritbased scholarship funds distributed by the university have tripled since his arrival. Becker’s passion for student success has been matched by his commitment to increasing multidisciplinary research and economic development as facilitated by the creation of new research centers, the Second Century Initiative—an ambitious program to hire one-hundred senior faculty members to serve in interdisciplinary research clusters, and an enhanced emphasis on the translation of faculty research into products and companies. This commitment has brought the university to new heights of research accomplishment, as reflected, for example, in new university records for sponsored research funding and federal research funding. Being globally connected and engaged is another important component of Becker’s 16

GEORGIA STATE CROSS COUNTRY 2013

vision for the modern research university. Seeking to position Georgia State faculty and students to thrive in an increasingly complex and global landscape, Becker has worked with faculty leaders and international partners to enhance Georgia State’s global profile. In 2010 the university partnered with Beijing Language and Culture University to establish a Confucius Institute with an emphasis on business and commerce. In 2012 the institute was named a “2012 Confucius Institute of the Year.” Becker is particularly committed to developing strong partnerships with universities in rapidly growing economies. As a result, the university is working to strengthen relationships with counterparts in Brazil, China, South Africa, South Korea and Turkey. These partners are the basis for the development of new student and faculty exchanges, study abroad programs, research collaborations, executive training initiatives, government and private sector networks, and dual-degree programs. Becker has aggressively advanced the campus’ physical development and revitalization of downtown Atlanta. This has included major additions to campus housing and dining, research and academic facilities, as well as intramural and athletics facilities. In 2010 the university added football to its athletics program, and in 2013 added sand volleyball and moved to the Sun Belt Conference to advance into the Division I – FBS level of NCAA competition. Throughout his career Becker has served on boards and committees of civic, government and professional bodies. He serves, for example, on the boards of the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities, World Affairs Council of Atlanta, Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Aquarium, Georgia Research Alliance, Woodruff Arts Center, and the Atlanta Committee for Progress. He also serves on the executive committees of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education (Chair) and Central Atlanta Progress. Trained as a statistician, Becker has had a distinguished career in biostatistics and public

health sciences. For most of his professorial career he was a member of the faculty in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Michigan, where he also held appointments in the Institute for Social Research, and the Department of Statistics. He was made a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Becker has been principal investigator on research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. He has published extensively in leading journals, and his doctoral students have gone on to successful careers in leading higher education institutions and with multinational companies. Becker served on multiple editorial boards, was co-editor of Sociological Methodology, and was a guest editor for Sociological Methods and Research and for the Journal of the American Statistical Association. Prior to his appointment as president of Georgia State, Becker was executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina and dean of the School of Public Health and assistant vice president of Public Health Preparedness and Emergency Response at the University of Minnesota. From 1989 to 2000, Becker was a professor in the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health, where he also was associate dean for academic affairs. He has held academic appointments at the University of Washington, the University of Florida and Cornell University. Becker attended Harford (Md.) Community College, earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Towson State University in 1980 and his Ph.D. degree in statistics from the Pennsylvania State University in 1985. Becker grew up in Havre de Grace, Md., near Baltimore. He and his wife, Laura Voisinet, have two adult children, Matthew and Julia.

CHERYL L. LEVICK D I R E C TO R O F AT H L E T I C S

A

highly respected administrator with over two decades of experience guiding programs to the highest level of NCAA play, Cheryl L. Levick has successfully combined athletic and educational opportunities for students since the start of her career in collegiate athletics. As Georgia State’s Director of Athletics, Levick has helped boost the Panthers’ visibility on the national stage in multiple sports while adhering to the athletic department’s mission statement of shaping champions for today and leaders for tomorrow. The transformation of the Panther Athletics Department has been remarkable under Levick. Each program has been enhanced or in the case of football, built from scratch – the program had one player, two helmets and seven coaches when she arrived in 2009. Now it is set to compete at the FBS level in just its fourth season. To make that jump in schedule and talent, Levick hired Trent Miles away from his alma mater in December 2012 after he constructed an impressive – if not totally improbable – turnaround at Indiana State. Miles was not the first high-level coaching hire Levick successfully maneuvered for the Panthers as she also plucked Ron Hunter out of the state of Indiana in 2011. He quickly revitalized Georgia State basketball with its first postseason berth in a decade in his first year, and now has Panther fans eagerly awaiting the 2013-14 campaign. The significant imprint Levick has created at GSU can be seen across the entire athletic department. She has put Georgia State in position to compete for league titles right off the bat as it fully moves into the Sun Belt Conference in 2013-14. Last year, GSU squads won two SBC team crowns to put the conference on notice that the Panthers are not just

moving up, but they are ready to win from the start. Levick’s tenure in sport-crazy Atlanta has been marked by significant upgrades in facilities and fundraising. Annual giving to the Panther Athletic Club (PAC) has steadily increased by more than tenfold, and the three largest gifts in the history of GSU athletics have been secured. Construction projects have included the GSU Football Practice Complex, new facilities for strength and conditioning and sports medicine, and upgrades to every venue used by the Panthers. Arguably the most impressive project to date is the state-of-the-art facility for sand volleyball, the Panthers’ most recent sport addition. It was finished in time for the inaugural season in 2013, and is part of the ambitious Athletics Master Facilities Plan that Levick developed to address needs for every sport. Continuous success has been seen in the classroom as Georgia State student-athletes have excelled in recent years. Together, Panther student-athletes have recorded a cumulative grade-point average above 3.0 for 10 consecutive semesters while completing more than 5,000 hours of community service annually. Levick has been a significant proponent of providing opportunities for women in college sports. She started the Women, Sports and Power Luncheon to raise money for women’s sports by female donors, an event that has been successful at each of her previous stops as athletic director. The event helped raise $50,000 for GSU women’s teams in 2013.

THE LEVICK FAMILY: (from left) Michael Klass, Heather, Melissa, Jason Lake, Cheryl.

In 2011, Levick was named a “Game Changer” among women in sports business by the SportsBusiness Journal, and she was twice (1998 and 1999) named one of the nation’s Top 25 Female Sports Executives by Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal. The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) also named her Division I Athletic Administrator of the Year in 2001. Levick came to Georgia State from Maryland, where she served as chief of staff/ executive senior athletic director while overseeing the day-to-day management of the 27-sport program. That came after serving three years (2004-07) as director of athletics at Saint Louis, where she led the Billikens’ transition to the Atlantic 10 Conference and was the lead fundraiser for an $80 million on-campus arena and practice complex. In four years (2000-04) as director of athletics and recreation at Santa Clara, Levick oversaw a major renovation of the school’s basketball arena and saw the Broncos’ women’s soccer team capture the 2001 national championship. It is still the only NCAA team title in school history. Levick spent 12 years at Stanford as senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. She was the primary administrator for 33 varsity programs that won 44 national championships and helped Stanford to six straight Sears Cup titles. She also served as assistant commissioner of the Pac-10 Conference, assistant director of communications and women’s programs at the NCAA, women’s gymnastics coach and associate athletic director at Slippery Rock, and assistant gymnastics coach and synchronized swim coach at Indiana. Levick began her career at Pattonville Senior High School in St. Louis, Mo., coaching gymnastics and women’s track. Levick is a 1974 graduate of Missouri, and holds a master’s degree in athletic administration from Indiana. She has two daughters: Heather and husband Michael Klass with grandson Brady born in July 2013; and Melissa and husband Jason Lake.

ATHLETICS MASTER FACILITIES PLAN

A

n institution on the rise, Georgia State University has a tradition of progress that is reflected in its rising stature, growing campus and broadening influence. The Georgia State Athletics Master Facilities Plan is a blueprint for success and growth for GSU Athletics that will allow every Panther program to compete at the highest level. By building top-notch venues for every sport, Georgia State can recruit the best student-athletes and help them develop into champions. These new facilities will also enhance the game day experience for students, alumni and fans. The centerpiece of the Athletics Master Plan is the transformation of the GSU Sports Arena (left), the home of Panther basketball and volleyball as well as the athletics offices.

SUN BELT CONFERENCE

A

fter more than a year’s worth of anticipation, the wait was finally over. On July 1, 2012, the Georgia State Athletic Department officially became a member of the Sun Belt Conference and on July 1, 2013, all sports will now compete for championships in 14 league-sponsored sports starting this fall. “We look forward to playing a leadership role in the Sun Belt Conference and our teams competing for Sun Belt titles and postseason berths,” Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick said. “It really is a tremendous day in Georgia State sports history.” GSU’s move onto a national stage in all sports officially began on April 9, 2012. At a press conference inside the Georgia Dome, Sun Belt Conference officials joined Georgia State President Mark Becker and Levick at the public announcement of the Panthers’ impending conference move. A feasibility study begun in the fall of 2011 concluded the Panthers were well positioned to make the jump to the FBS level and that the Sun Belt would be an ideal fit. The rest has been history. The move now allows GSU to build on regional rivalries with several schools within driving distance, while also showcasing its talented teams to the country. It is a return home of sorts for Georgia State, which was a founding member of the Sun Belt Conference in 1976. At that time, the league consisted of six universities playing across four men’s sports – basketball, soccer, tennis and golf. Today, the Sun Belt Conference sponsors 18 sports, including 14 that the Panthers will vie for conference titles. On the men’s side, GSU will compete in baseball, basketball, football, golf and tennis, while women’s sports include basketball, golf, cross country, soccer, softball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and court volleyball. GSU has also announced plans to add women’s swimming and diving, another Sun Belt-sponsored sport. The Panthers already own two Sun Belt Conference titles in the past year. Ten individual sports were accepted into the league for 2012-13, giving the women’s cross country and men’s tennis teams a leg up on collecting hardware. Each squad won the Sun Belt title and helped Georgia State finish ahead of two SBC schools in the 2012-13 Vic Bubas Cup standings (an all sports trophy) despite competing in only half of the league’s sports. 20

2013 Season Preview

Defending Champions Wear The Bullseye Now Georgia State brought home the 2012 Sun Belt championship in its inaugural competition in the league. What has that meant and how does it affect the 2013 season? “Winning the championship has set the Georgia State bar a little higher now,” fourth year head coach Chris England said. “We know that being a champion puts a target on your program and others might be excited to really come after us and prove to themselves. With the veteran depth of the roster and that competition experience, our preseason expectations are to run well enough to repeat as champions,” he added. “Like any team, we need good health and we need to be our own motivators to run our best and stay on top.” The Panthers will return six from that championship team, including three seniors and three juniors. GSU has added one top-flight recruit who should add strength to that corps, plus one transfer.

THE EIGHT RUNNERS The six returners include seniors Katie Papesh, Jennifer Rubel and Anna Sinclair, along with juniors Niamh Kearney, Sarah McCarthy and Hannah Stefanoff. “Anna Sinclair has kind of shown herself to be a leader off the course and on the course seven days a week,” England said. “She was top 20 at the Sun Belt meet and her personality and attitude are keys in keeping the whole team focused and ready. “Hannah was a top-five finisher in five races last year, including the Sun Belt Championship, as well as top 50 in the NCAA Regional,” England noted. “We will need her to step up a little more to fill the shoes of graduating senior Katharine Showalter, who was last year’s Sun Belt champion.

“Winning the championship has set the Georgia State bar a little higher now.”

“Having won a title provides some muchneeded confidence,” England said. “We have a group that is talented, but more importantly, works hard to get better. Often, young runners don’t know the expectations or run with confidence. As coaches, we provide constant positive feedback and the veteran runners can help with that.” Champions usually know that preparation is a key element for winning. Coach England strongly believes that and the practices are all with a purpose.

“Success is built on routine,” said England, a former All-America runner. “As mundane as practices can be, nothing sets a team up for success better than championship practice standards. What we do daily mimics what we will do in season competition. We provide the team with challenging venues and different styles to train. We can use our great home course at Nash Farm Battlefield Park, we run the hills of Kennesaw Mountain Park, we run the trails of the Chattahoochee River Park, as well as other courses and terrains based on needs.” 22

GEORGIA STATE CROSS COUNTRY 2013

“Niamh showed incredible improvement in her spring track season in middle distance events,” England added. “She has proven successful in the 5k and 6k distances in cross country, proven by her 12th place finish at the Sun Belt Meet as a sophomore last year. We’ll need her to continue to score low. “Jennifer has improved in every year she has been at Georgia State and we expect her senior year to be her best year,” England said. “She was 14th last year at the Sun Belt Championship and should be capable of challenging for a top 10 spot now in her senior year. “Sarah was injured all of last season, but had finished 20th the previous season at the CAA Championships, so we’ll have to wait and see what role she can play for us this year,” England said. “Katie is a good team player and provides support, good practices and helps everyone get better, so we hope her senior season is a good one,” England added.

2013 Season Preview England was pleased to be able to add a top recruit in freshman Mackenzie Nail. She finished second and third in her final spring track competition at the state championship meet with Whitewater High School, south of metro Atlanta, and had been an all-state pick in cross country. “We think Mackenzie will become an integral scorer and finish in our top five this season,” England said. “We will just have to see how she performs at the college level and under a little pressure, but we certainly see a lot of potential in her.” The team was also able to add a junior transfer from the University of West Georgia in Carina Nieto. The junior had run for Dalton High School, finishing in the top 20 in the state of Georgia championship race. She was also the Region 7-AAA 3,200m champion during track season. “We hope Carina is able to continue to improve and add more depth to our veteran roster,” England said.

SCHEDULE GSU will get plenty of work in the state of Alabama this year, competing twice at the Troy course in regular season before the Nov. 2 Sun Belt Championship and once at the University of Alabama course where the NCAA Regional will be held. “The Troy course is hilly and difficult, so we need to understand it and need to build our confidence running on that course,” England said. “Our goal is obviously to defend our league title on that course so we need to be able to run it well.” One of the bigger challenges will be on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Greater Louisville Classic on the 2012 National Championship course. A national field will race the Tom Sawyer Park course. “Every year we look forward to major competition and this is a well-organized meet with a strong, fast pace to get us to run our best.” The Panthers will also run at the Furman Classic on Saturday, Sept. 14, on a beautiful course that has hosted two NCAA Championships. Atlanta fans can come out to watch the Panthers in their lone home meet of the season in the 38th GSU Invitational on Friday, Sept. 20 at Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton. The NCAA Regional will be held Nov. 15 on Alabama’s course in Tuscaloosa. “We have risen from 18th, to 14th, to 11th in the Regional meet in my first three years at Georgia State, so I’d like to crack the top 10 this year,” England said. The NCAA Championship race is Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.

2013 GSU Invitational

O

2012 Year In Review

Women Win Championship First Year in the Sun Belt The 2012 season will be remembered as the year the women’s cross country team captured the first Sun Belt championship in Georgia State program history. Despite being slotted to finish seventh in the Sun Belt preseason coaches’ poll, the Panthers made an immediate splash by winning the conference title in their first try. GSU brought home a handful of hardware from Bowling Green, Ky. following the conference meet on Oct. 27. In addition to the team title, Katharine Showalter was named the Sun Belt Runner of the Year and Chris England was named Coach of the Year. “We wanted to be ambassadors for the rest of the Georgia State programs,” England said. “We hope that this acts as a springboard for the rest of the individual sports and give hope for the team sports who have to wait for next year to join the Sun Belt. We just want to make everyone proud to be a part of GSU.” Cross country was the first program to represent the Panthers in a Sun Belt competition since the school announced a move to the league in July 2012. Although GSU team sports were not eligible to compete in the Sun Belt until the 2013-14 season, individual sports like cross country were able to join last season. Five Panthers were named to all-conference teams. Showalter and Hannah Stefanoff were named to the All-Sun Belt first team for the women.. Representing the Panthers on the women’s all-conference third team were Niamh Kearney and Jennifer Rubel.

NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP Katharine Showalter (166th)

2012 Year In Review Showalter put together one of the best individual seasons in program history, becoming just the fourth female runner to qualify for a spot in the NCAA Championship race after coming in 12th at the Region meet. At the national championship, Showalter placed 166th out of 253 runners. Her 6K time of 21:13.79 was the second fastest for a Georgia State competitor at the national meet. “Any time you have someone competing in the national championship, it brings positive attention to your program,” England said. “Katharine really made a commitment to improve her training. She put in the hard work all year and made a lot of sacrifices.” The women’s team topped out at No. 8 in the USTFCCCA South Region rankings after being ranked all eight weeks during the season. At the NCAA South Region meet, the women’s team finished 11th out of 29 teams. During the course of the eight-meet season, the women’s team captured four team victories, while the men took home two. The women recorded a perfect score of 15 during two of these victories and came close by scoring 16 at a third. Individually, Showalter finished in first place during five of those meets. The team defended its home turf at the 37th annual GSU Invite, the Panthers’ lone home meet of the season. The meet took place on Sept. 8 at Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Ga. Showalter secured five Sun Belt Runner of the Week awards out of seven opportunities during the season. These five conference weekly honors is a single-season high for the program, besting the four awards earned a year before. “The program over the last few years is only going in one direction and that is up,” England said. “When I took over at Georgia State three years ago, I had my work cut out for me. Each year the teams keep improving. We’ll just look to keep moving forward.”

GEORGIA STATE CROSS COUNTRY 2013

GSU’s Best n Georgia State Cross Coun-

try runner Jennifer Feenstra left a lasting impression at Georgia State. The Canadian advanced to the NCAA Championships as a senior and finished 44th, still the highest by a female in school history. Her second-place finish in the region meet is also a schoolbest placing. A mathematics major, Feenstra was an Academic All-America starndout. She was the A-Sun Conference champion, after having been second twice and fourth once. Feenstra was a six-time conference runner-of-the-week winner.

HISTORY IN BRIEF In 1976, Georgia State began fielding a women’s NCAA cross country team under the guidance of then-head men’s coach Bruce LaBudde. The Panthers have captured six team conference titles, including the most recent in the 2012 inaugural year in the Sun Belt Conference. GSU’s top runner was the first-place finisher in the first season in a conference (1985) as Terri Morrison won the New South Women’s Athletic Conference with a 5k time of 18:37. In 2012, Katharine Showalter came across the line first to win the Sun Belt 5k in 17:41. The Panthers have had 11 first-place finishers in the conference championship meet and 12 conference runners-of-the-year. Sarah Howard set the bar a little higher for GSU when she won threestraight conference titles (1996-98) and became the first to earn allregion honors and to advance to the NCAA Championships (1999).

2009 All-CAA Janel Blancet and Caitlin Price

Canadian recruit Jennifer Feenstra then earned three all-region honors from 2001-04. Her second-place finish at the 2001 region meet is the highest in school history. Feenstra followed the region placing with a 44th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, also a school best. GSU had had the conference runner of the year three times in the past six years with Rachel Hannah, Janel Blancett and Katharine Showalter all earning the recognition. The Georgia State Invitational meet had been a tradition unti 2007 in Panthersville, but that course was closed.. The meet was revived in 2010 by current head coach Chris England at Nash Farm Battlefield.
