Georgia Southwestern State University Americus, Georgia Georgia Southwestern State University, a four-year unit of the University System of Georgia, was founded in 1906 as the Third Agricultural and Mechanical School. In 1926, the General Assembly granted a charter authorizing the school to offer two years of college work and to change its name to the Third District Agricultural and Normal College. The new charter resulted in the expansion of the curriculum to include courses in teacher training, and the State Department of Education gave teacher certification to students who completed the program. In 1932, by legislative enactment, this college and other statesupported institutions of higher learning in Georgia were organized into the University System of Georgia and placed under the jurisdiction of the Board of Regents. As a unit of the University System, the College continued its two-year curriculum and changed its name to Georgia Southwestern College. In 1964, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia authorized Georgia Southwestern College to begin its transition to a four-year degree-granting institution. This action resulted in the development of baccalaureate programs, and the first bachelor’s degrees were conferred in June 1968. The name of the institution was changed to Georgia Southwestern State University in July of 1996. A program of graduate studies leading to the Master of Education degree was approved by the Board of Regents and initiated in June 1973. This program has undergone continuous growth and development, and the Specialist in Education degree was begun in the summer of 1982. The Master of Science in Administration was added in the winter of 1983. The Master of Science in Computer Science was added in the Spring of 1986, and the Master of Business Administration was added to the curriculum in 2003. Among distinguished GSW alumni are former President of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Jimmy Carter, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, and former U.S. Attorney General Griffin Bell.
Head Coach Harold Munoz Munoz comes to Georgia Southwestern from Mercer University where he was an assistant coach on the women’s soccer staff the past two seasons under former GSW head coach Tony Economopoulos (2009-11). In his two years with the Bears, Munoz helped Mercer to a 2314-6 record and consecutive appearances in the Southern Conference Tournament Championship game. In 2014, Mercer won the SoCon Tournament in its first year in the league and advanced to the NCAA Division I Tournament for just the second time in program history. The Bears tallied a 14-6-2 record, winning the most games in a single-season in the program’s 30-year history. Mercer also ended the season with the highest RPI in program history. The Bears finished the season ranked No. 9 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Southeast Region poll, the first time in history that Mercer finished the season in the rankings. Mercer also earned its 13th straight NSCAA Team Academic Award. Before joining the staff at Mercer, Munoz served as the head men’s soccer coach for six seasons at Division II member Eastern New Mexico University. He compiled a 66-42-20 overall record at Eastern New Mexico while leading the Greyhounds to a Lone Star Conference Championship in 2011. Under Munoz, the Greyhounds set single-season schools records for most wins (11), fewest goals allowed (17) and most shutouts (5). Prior to his stint at Eastern New Mexico, Munoz was the head women’s soccer coach at NAIA member Midland University for the 2007 campaign. The Warriors went 13-2-4 in Munoz’s only season at Midland and earned a runner-up finish in the Great Plans Athletic Conference Championship. Munoz played collegiate soccer at William Woods University from 1998-2002 where he was a First Team All-American Midwest Conference selection. He went on to obtain a Master’s of Science in Physical Education while serving as a graduate assistant coach at Eastern New Mexico. A Bogotá, Colombia native, Munoz also played semi-professionally in the Canadian Professional Soccer League (North York Astros) and the Premier Development League (Sioux Falls Spitfire). Munoz currently holds a Premier Diploma as well as a Goalkeeping “Level I” diploma from the NSCAA. Munoz and his wife, Natalie, have two sons, Nolan and Harry.
