Guest Speakers… Garden Design and Garden Trends

Let’s Get It Together!

S

T

usan Appleget Hurst has been known to let her interest in gardening get her into big trouble. In fact, she was grounded for choosing gardening over homework while in the third grade. Susan had gardened in the Midwest, the South, and on the West Coast (but has yet to create garden havoc in New England.) A practical gardener from the beginning, growing vegetables and herbs, she has branched out (pun intended) to grow beds of flowers, trees and shrubs all over her home yard. Currently, she is the senior associate garden editor of Better Homes and Gardens magazine. Before joining the staff of Better Homes and Gardens, she edited the Country Gardens Gardener’s Almanac and Garden Shed magazine. Susan will speak about “Garden Design and Garden Trends” on Saturday, February 23, at 1:00 p.m.

he Memphis Antiques, Garden & Gourmet Show Lecture Series is excited to have Maryanne Macdonald share her wisdom on how to cut the clutter, get organized, and make things happen in less time and stress. Her lecture, “From Perennials to Pie Safes…Everything in its Place” will be featured on both Friday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. As owner of Organize by Design, a consultant and Maryanne Macdonald instructor on organization and time management, this mother of two has become a specialist in how to juggle career and family demands. Maryanne Macdonald has been teaching classes on organization and time management through the University of Memphis in the department of Professional and Continuing Education since 1989. A member of the National Association of Professional Organizers, Maryanne serves on the NAPO Certification Project Team and is Vice-President of the Memphis Chapter. Her home has been featured in the Commercial Appeal Home & Garden section and she has been a contributor to articles on organization in At Home Memphis, Memphis Parent magazine, Memphis Senior Housing Guide and Justine Magazine. Relating real life success stories from her professional and personal experiences, Maryanne will entertain, energize, and motivate you to become an organizational success!

J. Michael Flanigan Returns

M

adonna Circle welcomes back Antiques Roadshow’s Michael Flanigan for his fourth appearance at our show. He first came in 2005 and has proven to be not only well educated in appraising antiques but a popular and genial personality. Mr. Flanigan has been in the antiques business for 30 years. Focusing on classic American furniture, he spent seven years with J. W. Berry and Son, performing conservation work for almost every museum, historical society and historic home in the Baltimore area. Describing his experience there,he said, “It gave me a chance to learn about furniture inside and out.” It also taught him how to authenticate the design and construction of a piece of furniture as to period and locale of manufacture. Michael spent the next three years as administrator of the Kaufman Americana Foundation, over-seeing the exhibition of the collection at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. He wrote the catalogue of the exhibition “American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection.” Since the close of the Kaufman Exhibit, he has been a private dealer in Baltimore, exhibiting at antiques shows, writing articles on antiques, and lecturing to groups throughout the country. A member of the American Institute of Conservation, Mr. Flanigan serves on various museum support groups. Appraisals will be held Friday, February 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Y

ou will forget the present while Frank Langford takes you on a visit to yesteryear. Your passport to the past will be provided by Frank as he takes you on a tour of booths at Madonna Circle’s Memphis Antiques,

Garden & Gourmet Show. You can imagine actually being there as he describes the intricacies, workmanship and histories of furniture and works of art. This tour will give you the sense of sharing in their lives. Mr. Langford is a member of the American Institute of Appraisers. He established FL Appraisals, Ltd in 1973. He is on the Board of the Botanic Gardens and the Brooks Museum Decorative Arts Trust.
