2009 Recipients…
T
he Exchange Club Family Center, carefully selected by Madonna Circle as one of two extremely deserving Primary Recipients for half of the funds raised from our show, has a goal to ensure that young parents have the parenting knowledge and life skills required to provide for themselves and their infants, to help reduce truancy, juvenile delinquency and teen pregnancy, and to provide a positive support system for teen parents. Its mission is to break the cycle of child abuse and neglect by replacing abusive or violent behavior with effective parenting skills. Their many programs provide assistance for those who are in physical and/or psychological need.
A
ve Maria Home Green House Project ® is the second Primary Recipient that Madonna Circle has chosen to share half of the proceeds from the show. Ave Maria is a non-profit agency that has been providing for the spiritual and physical needs of both active and frail seniors in a Christcentered environment for over fifty years. Last fall Ave Maria broke ground on one of the most innovative and ambitious projects in the home’s history, the Green House Project®. When completed, residents will live in a community as a family sharing meals, socializing and participating in activities. Each unit built will be home for ten residents. Specially trained workers will staff each home and provide care that breaks from the traditional nursing assistant role. This initiative will help transform institutions and enhance the rights and dignity of individual residents. The funds donated by Madonna Circle will provide for this specialized staff training. Ave Maria Home residents represent a variety of economic and faith backgrounds and Madonna Circle is thrilled to be a part of this most deserving program.
Madonna Circle’s contribution will be to support and expand First Steps, a 10 week in-home program that teaches disadvantaged first-time mothers to become self-sufficient. This program seeks to increase the chances of these young parents completing high school and learning job skills so they can gain employment and the necessary financial resources to provide for their children. National research indicates that this type of program offers the greatest chance of success and Madonna Circle is proud to be a part of this outstanding effort. 10 | Madonna Circle

J. Michael Flanigan Returns
M
adonna Circle welcomes back Antiques Roadshow’s Michael Flanigan for his fifth appearance at our show. He first came in 2005 and has proven to be not only well educated in appraising antiques but a popular and genial personality. Mr. Flanigan has been in the antiques business for 30 years. Focusing on classic American furniture, he spent seven years with J. W. Berry and Son, performing conservation work for almost every museum, historical society and historic home in the Baltimore area. Describing his experience there,he said, “It gave me a chance to learn about furniture inside and out.” It also taught him how to authenticate the design and construction of a piece of furniture as to period and locale of manufacture. Michael spent the next three years as administrator of the Kaufman Americana Foundation, over-seeing the exhibition of the collection at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. He wrote the catalogue of the exhibition American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection. Since the close of the Kaufman Exhibit, he has been a private dealer in Baltimore, exhibiting at antiques shows, writing articles on antiques, and lecturing to groups throughout the country. A member of the American Institute of Conservation, Mr. Flanigan serves on various museum support groups. Appraisals will be held Friday, February 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. $15 per item or 2 for $25 Madonna Circle | 11

Madonna Circle 1936-2009
I
n 1936 a group of civic-minded ladies joined together in response to a need in the Memphis community. They founded the St. Catherine’s Junior Club to assist girls from out of town working in the big city of Memphis and living in the St. Catherine’s Home for Girls. Gertrude Lovett (Mrs. Lloyd B., Sr.) served as senior advisor for the club and Mary Louise Saxon (Mrs. David W., Jr.) acted as president. Just two years later, in 1938, with a fast growing membership and a desire to respond to the additional community needs, a separate group was organized and chose the name, Madonna Circle. In 1996 the Circle incorporated as a nonprofit organization. Members wore blue uniforms while doing their works and became known around the Mid-South as the Ladies in Blue. As the years passed, the blue uniforms were left behind and the membership in the Circle continued to grow as did the needs of the community. Madonna Circle now has a membership of approximately 575 Catholic women from all areas of the city. It’s focus remains on fulfilling community needs by members providing service hours at St. Peter’s Manor and at two Jubilee schools, and by the financial aide donated annually to a wide variety of non-denominational charities in Memphis and the Mid-South. Since 1976 Madonna Circle has sponsored the prestigious Memphis Antiques Garden & Gourmet Show. This multifaceted show brings to Memphis the finest antiques, garden and gourmet exhibits and products. It has enabled us to give approximately $2,600,000 to local organizations in the last 33 years. We are proud of our tradition and are extremely thankful for all who support us.
“Thank You Madonna Circle. Much Success to a Great Organization.”
