George C. Grffin Track Home of the Yellow Jackets

The George C. Griffin Track and Field Facility, already considered one of the top sites in the Southeast for outdoor collegiate track competition, was improved as part of Georgia Tech’s preparation for the Centennial Olympic Games. Griffin Track was renovated with a sate-of-the-art Mondo surface, similar to those used at Olympic Stadiums and at the sites of the World Championship, U.S. Track and Field Indoor Championships and NCAA Outdoor Championships. The track was the workout track for the Olympic Village, which offered Tech the opportunity to renovate its facilities. Fifteen Griffin Track records (eight women’s and seven men’s marks) were set at the 1996 Georgia Tech-Reebok Invitational, the first event held on the new surface. The Georgia Tech track team’s locker rooms were also renovated as part of the $10 million re-creation of the Alexander Memorial Coliseum, which served as the boxing venue during the Games. In addition to Griffin Track’s state of the art surface and locker rooms, the facility is enhanced by a scenic location, which combines natural beauty with Atlanta’s modern skyline. The eight-lane, ultramodern Griffin Track is located between Tech’s Rose Bowl practice football fields and the Bill Moore Tennis Center on Fowler Street. Griffin Track was originally built in the summer of 1985 and remains one of the few tracks in the United States that meet international standards. The facility is named after national Hall of Fame coach George C. Griffin, who guided both the Yellow Jacket track and cross country programs from 1921-25 and 1934-43 and remained the cross country coach until 1974. The Tech track and field program experienced unprecedented success during the Griffin era, winning six Southeastern Athletic Association Championships and one Southeastern Conference Championship. Griffin also guided the cross country team to new heights, winning 10 SEC titles, including six in a row from 1935-40. Two of Griffin’s athletes competed in the Olympic Games. Homer Welchel competed in the javelin in 1924, and Ed Hamm won a Gold medal and set a world record in the long jump in 1928.

Morris Bryan Stadium Morris Bryan Stadium, which completes the George C. Griffin Track and Field Facility, provides the Rambling Wreck with one of the finest total track and field complexes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The facilities at Morris Bryan Stadium include a 1,500-seat grandstand along with judges stands, a press box, concession stands, storage areas and restrooms. The grandstands bring fans close to the action and give them an excellent view of the track as well as the Atlanta skyline. The area around the track is magnificent, as you can see the Atlanta skyscrapers and the Tech Tower. The stadium’s namesake, the late Morris Bryan, is the former president of the Jefferson Mills. A 1941 graduate of Georgia Tech, Bryan competed for three years as a hurdler on legendary coach George Griffin’s track teams. Bryan was widely known as the “Father of the Georgia Olympics,” an all=classification state high school track and field championship meet that has been held in Jefferson, Ga., since 1972. “The family and company wanted to make a first-class facility,” said Tom Bryan. “We are highly honored to name the stadium in memory of my brother.” The stadium was officially dedicated when Tech hosted the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the first time in school history in April 1987. A contribution from the Bryan family and Jefferson Mills in large part funded the building of the stadium. Former Director of Track Buddy Fowlkes also solicited donations from Tech track and field alumni. Donors have had their names etched on a plaque and were honored at the dedication ceremony.

Moss, the 2007 60-meter hurdles NCAA Champion, earned four All-American honors in her time on the Flats. Fofanah, a two-time All-American in the hurdles, represented Guinea at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Lemons became a two-time ACC Field MVP and three-time All-American under Page’s teachings. One of his latest prodigies, Chaunte Howard, captured three consecutive national titles in the women’s high jump at the 2004 indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships, and ‘05 indoor NCAA Championships. She became the first women’s athlete to qualify for the Summer Olympics, finishing second at the ‘04 U.S. Olympic Trials, earning a spot on the U.S. team. Howard won the high jump at the ‘08 U.S. Olympic trials, and went on to place sixth at the 2008 Beijing games. She won the Gold medal at the 2009 U.S. Outdoor National Championships this past summer in Eugene, Ore. In Athens, Greece, Howard finished in a tie for 28th place on a rare off day. She ended her career at Tech as a six-time ACC champion, six-time All-American, three-time NCAA champion and three-time ACC Most Valuable Performer. Howard signed a professional contract with NIKE, forgoing her senior season, but continues to train under Page and attend classes at Tech. She went on to earn a Silver medal at the 10th IAAF World Championships, in Helsinki, Finald, with a lifetime-best mark of 6’6.75” in the high jump. Howard currently ranks sixth in the world and is the top American in the high jump. Andria King, a former assistant coach at Tech, was another highlight under coach Page’s tutelage. Page coached King to four NCAA national runner-up finishes in the 60- and 100-meter hurdles in 1998 and ‘99. She formerly held the American collegiate record in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.00 in 1999. King was a five-time All-American and three-time ACC MVP. Other Yellow Jacket All-Americans under Page are Eric Bowers (indoor long jump, 1997), Lynn Houston (indoor high jump, 1999), Malcolm Leason (outdoor triple jump, 2000), Shantrell Moss (4x100, 2005), Montrell Person (110m HH, 2004/60m HH, 2005), Clayton Porter (indoor long jump, 2000), Dana Rogers (4x100, 2004, ‘05/60m HH, ‘05), Amandi Rhett (4x100, 100, 200, 2005), Brandy Depland (triple jump 2005, `06), Shantia Moss (60m HH, ‘07, ‘08, 100m HH, `06, ‘08), Andriane Lapsley (60m, 100m, 4x100, `06), Jerome Miller (high jump, `06, ‘09), Fatmata Fofanah (100m HH, ‘07, 60m HH, ‘08) , James Lemons II (indoor triple jump, ‘08, indoor long jump, ‘08, outdoor triple jump, ‘08) and Alphonso Jordan (indoor triple jump, ’09). Page narrowly missed being named the 2009 East Region Assistant Coach of the Year as Yellow Jackets Alphonso Jordan (triple jump) and Jerome Miller (high jump) won titles in their respective events. On the conference level, he has guided six men to conference titles: Bowers (indoor long jump, 1997), Jordan (outdoor triple jump, 2009), Leason (outdoor triple jump, 2000), Miller (outdoor high jump, 2009), David Riley (indoor triple jump, 1997) and Person (60m HH, 110m HH, 2004-05). Page has also worked with Wenda Vereen, who was a member of the U.S. 4x100 team, which won a Silver medal and set an American record at the 1993 World Championships. Howard captured a Silver medal at the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finald, with a lifetime-best leap of 6’6.75” in the high jump. Trammell, a three-time Olympian, won the 2007 USA Outdoor National Championships in the 110-meter hurdles and placed second at the ‘07 World Championships since working with Page. Dan RADAKOVICH Director of Athletics Indiana [PA] (1980) • 4th Year at Georgia Tech In his fourth year as Georgia Tech’s Director of Athletics,

Dan Radakovich has brought a new vision for excellence to the Yellow Jackets’ storied athletics tradition. In a relatively short amount of time since arriving in Atlanta, Radakovich has put his mark on Georgia Tech’s athletics program. The 2008-09 academic year at Georgia Tech wos one of unprecedented athletic success. One year after hiring Paul Johnson as head football coach, Georgia Tech suprised the experts by winning nine games, tying for the ACC Coastal Division title and playing in a 12th consecutive bowl game. The Yellow Jackets, who beat 13th-ranked Georgia and two other ranked teams in November, played in the Chickfil-A Bowl and were ranked 22nd in the final national polls. The women’s basketball team registered its third straight 20-win season and earned an NCAA Tournament bid for the third consecutive year. The baseball team finished ranked in the top 25. The softball team swept the ACC regular season and tournament titles. The golf team captured the ACC championship and finished the season ranked seventh nationally. The men’s swimming and diving team enjoyed its best NCAA Championships finish ever (19th) and the women’s team broke 10 school records. The women’s tennis team finished ranked eighth nationally. In men’s track, Jerome Miller (high jump) and Steve Marcelle (shot put) turned in recordbreaking performances en route to earning All-American honors. Facilities received major upgrades in 2008-09. Shirley Clements Mewborn Field, the home for Tech’s softball program, was unveiled prior to the start of the 2009 season and was ultimately showcased on ESPN when the Yellow Jackets hosted an NCAA Super Regional. The Zelnak Center, a new practice facility for Georgia Tech basketball, will be in place prior to the start of the 2009-10 season. Bobby Dodd Stadium will receive several cosmetic upgrades, featuring a new video board that will be in place this fall. The 2007-08 academic year featured the hiring of Johnson as head football coach, women’s basketball emerging as one of the top programs in the South, baseball advancing to the NCAA Regionals and women’s tennis advancing to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Individually, Amanda Mc- Dowell won the NCAA singles title in women’s tennis. The 2006-07 year was highlighted by Tech’s women’s tennis team capturing the Institute’s first ever NCAA championship and its third straight Atlantic Coast Conference title. The football team won the ACC Coastal Division, the men’s basketball team earned its third NCAA Tournament bid in four years, the women’s basketball team posted its finest season with 21 wins and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, and the golf team won a share of the ACC title for the second straight year. Outside the competition venues, Radakovich has directed an overhaul of the annual giving and donation structure for Tech athletics, anchored by the new TECH Fund, which establishes minimum giving levels tied to season tickets in various seating areas of Bobby Dodd Stadium and Alexander Memorial Coliseum. Several facility upgrades have been completed, including the transformation of Tech’s former football locker room on the ground floor of the Edge Athletic Center into a new Technology Center, which benefits academic support services for all Yellow Jacket student-athletes. Radakovich also initiated the Athletic Director’s Initiative Fund, started in June, 2006, which has rasied in cash and pledges more than $12 million. A recent gift from the Henry F. McCarnish, Jr., family for the renovation of Alexander Memorial Coliseum, could be worth up to $15 million toward that project. Named Georgia Tech’s Director of Athletics on February 22, 2006, Radakovich possesses nearly two decades of experience in collegiate athletics management positions. He came to Georgia Tech after five years as senior associate athletics director at LSU (2001-06), and he previously served as the Athletics Director at American University in 2000-01. That followed stints as associate athletics director at South Carolina (1994-2000) and Long Beach State (198994) as well as two years as the athletics business manager at Miami (1983-85). Just the seventh Director of Athletics in Tech history, Radakovich was named by then Institute President Dr. Wayne Clough to succeed Dave Braine, who retired after nearly nine years in the post. Radakovich also follows in the footsteps of storied names such as John Heisman, Bobby Dodd and Homer Rice. A graduate of Center High School near Aliquippa, Pa., and a member of its Alumni Hall of Fame, Radakovich, 50, became a football letterwinner and student coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1980 with a bachelor of science degree in finance. He was enshrined into the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame earlier this year. Radakovich added a master’s degree in business administration from Miami in 1982. He also completed the Sports Management Institute’s executive education program in 1992. He is married to the former Marcie McDonald, and the couple has two children, Christian, 19,and Grant, 15. Christian is a sophomore at Georgia Tech.

Charles Thomas (1909-17) Charles Thomas coached the Tech track team for nine seasons. Thomas led the Rambling Wreck to its first conference championship with a first-place finish at the SIAA meet in 1912

George C. Griffin (1924-26, 33-43) George Griffin made his coaching debut in 1922, when the Jackets enjoyed a ton of success. Griffin began his track career at Tech as a freshman standout in 1916 and came to work as an assistant coach under coach Alexander from 1922-23. Griffin took over the reigns in 1924 and although his first stint as head coach lasted only two years, he returned for a 10-year stint 1933-43. He led the Rambling Wreck to unprecedented success during that span, as Tech won six Southeastern Athletic Association Championships and one Southeastern Conference Championship. Griffin coached two Olympians, Homer Welchel and Ed Hamm. Hamm won a Gold medal in the long jump in 1928.

Norris Dean (1944-64) Norris Dean, one of the finest allaround athletes in Georgia Tech history, succeeded legendary coach George C. Griffin and immediately began to establish his own legacy. In the 20 years in which he directed the track team, Dean witnessed three SEC track titles and finished runner-up on three different occasions. The Yellow Jackets went undefeated in dual meets in 1944, ‘48 and ‘49 and won SEC cross country titles in ‘47, ‘53 and ‘54. Dean is a member of the Georgia Tech Hall of Fame, joining Griffin to represent 32 years of excellence in track and field coaching.

Harold Barron (1927-30) Harold Barron came to Tech after winning four national titles in the high hurdles at Penn State University. Barron was on the 1920 Olympic team and finished second at the Summer Games in the high hurdles. Under his watch, Tech standout Ed Hamm won two national championships and qualified for the 1928 Olympics.

William Anderson Alexander (1918-23) Working as a football and track coach, William Anderson Alexander led the Yellow Jacket track program for six seasons. In 1922, the Yellow Jackets had its finest season during the early era when Alexander led the Rambling Wreck to a Georgia State Championship, a Southeastern Amateur Athletic Union Championship, a dual meet win over Sewanee and a tri meet victory against Auburn and Clemson.

Ed Hamm (1931-32) Ed Hamm won two national championships for Tech and took over as head coach in 1931. Hamm became the first Gold medalist for the Jackets in 1928, winning the long jump at the Summer Games.

Buddy Fowlkes (1965-92) A recent induction into the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame on Nov. 30, 2005, Buddy Fowlkes, the captain of the 1949 Tech track team and three-time SEC total point champion, was named head coach in 1965. Over the next three decades he elevated the Georgia Tech track and field program to extraordinary heights as the Yellow Jackets began to consistently rank among the nation’s elite. Fowlkes’ list of accomplishments include three Olympic medalists, two World Record holders, 10 NCAA national champions, 50 All-Americans, 77 Atlantic Coast Conference champions and 126 All-ACC selections. A 1988 inductee in the State of Georgia Athletic Hall of Fame, Fowlkes was twice named ACC Coach of the Year (1987, ‘88) and was honored as the 1985 NCAA Indoor Southeast Coach of the Year. Fowlkes pupils include Antonio McKay,

Grover Hinsdale (1993-present) Hinsdale engineered the track program to four top 10 indoor and outdoor NCAA Championship finishes during his 16 seasons as head coach. Entering his 31st season overall with the Yellow Jackets, Hinsdale was named ACC Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2008, and has tutored three Olympic Gold medalists, 13 NCAA champions and 68 All-Americans. Among the group of talented athletes that struck gold is Derrick Adkins, who won Olympic gold in the 400-meter individual hurdles in 1996. A second Olympic medalist is Derek Mills, who won gold as part of the 4x400 relay team in Atlanta. The third Olympic gold medalist is Angelo Taylor, who won gold in the 400 intermediate hurdles at the 2000 Sydney Games. He won two national titles and was a four-time All-American during his career on The Flats. Other top runners under Hinsdale include Octavius Terry, a three-time national champion and nine-time All-American; Jonas Motiejunas, a two-time national champion and five-time All-American; and David Krummenacker, a two-time national champion and eight-time All-American. Krummenacker is currently one of the top middle distance runners in the world. A 2003 inductee of Ferris State University’s Hall of Fame, Hinsdale led the Rambling Wreck to a fourth-place finish at the 1994 NCAA Outdoor Championships and a third-place finish at the 1997 NCAA Indoor Championships.
