COOL COMFORT Our favourite fashion season is once again upon us. From bold graphic prints and colourful denim to forty’s inspired dresses and skirts, the styles are sure to impress. So update your wardrobe with some of the newest trends! COLOUR The palette runs hot and cold from the warmth of pinks and reds to the edgy coolness of blues and grays. Pink, normally reserved for warmer months is coming up as an important shade and is now a hue seen on sweaters, jackets and even outerwear. Red is in again this cold season especially in rich cherry and deep burgundy. Combinations of red, black and gold are particularly striking especially on ornate blazers, handbags, boots and jewellery. Cobalt, a vibrant and easy to wear fashion favourite, is no longer just an accent colour, but a focal point. Cobalt looks sharp with black but for the latest, try cobalt, black and white combinations. Teal, a rich looking emerald and sapphire combination is an ideal complement to the weightier fabrics. Because teal is neither plain nor overly bright, it can be worn pretty much top to toe in a dress or as a separate. Pair teal with an equally strong hue like navy for added zing or enhance it with soft colours including off white and gray.

When it comes to neutrals, black and white dressing is always an easy choice. This combination offers a striking chic contrast in a streamlined outďŹ t or a more

playful look in a fun graphic print. However, you can opt for a softer palette this season in navy and gray, the new neutrals. Navy is seriously chic, especially for minimalist looks. It’s a super colour for military inspired coats, pea coats, and caplets. And yes…..you can, and should wear navy with black; it’s a sophisticated combination. For a softer look, pair navy with gray. Gray is a perfect wardrobe in between. It goes with everything! Mix gray tones for a fresh take on menswear. While you can go safe and wear gray with black, I like the contrast of a sharp white shoe or pairing gray with muted tones like olive green for a soft, pale look.

PRINTS Graphic prints are still all the rage mainly in black and white; animal is probably hotter than ever with digitized spots and statement skin; florals still dominate, especially roses and textured blooms. Patterns are like neutrals; you can wear them with almost anything. Animal patterns and stripes are quite neutral and can easily be mixed with other patterns such as florals. Or, keep it simple and wear one major statement piece, for example a patterned coat, and keep the rest of the outfit neutral. A boldly printed coat would be fab with a black cashmere sweater and skinny jeans. TEXTURE Menswear dressing is still an important trend and the use of classic fabrics like velvet, tweed, leather and plaid reflects a simpler, back to basics mood. Whether faux or real, leather is the single most important material. The

leather motorcycle jacket is of course a long time staple that adds an edgier feel to an outfit. Not ready for full on leather? Try just an accent. Update your jean jacket with one that has leather sleeves. Or try leggings and jeans with leather panels down the front. A pencil skirt with leather details lends a tough chic vibe to this season’s feminine tops and heels. Look for fur details and accents on various clothing items and accessories this season. Fur adds a touch of luxury to any outfit. A fur topper is always glamourous, but you can get the same feel in smaller doses. Try a fur vest over a black turtleneck worn with sleek skinnies or pencil skirt.

JEANS With unexpected finishes and sleek cuts, this season’s jeans are beyond basic. Rock them for work, play and especially for partying. For work, wear dark and streamlined styles;

for weekend slim and slouchy are great; and for night, edgy and embellished jeans are must haves. Skinny jeans are the go-to style, although the slim boot cut and boyfriend jeans are still among the favoured styles for the cold days. Inspired by the runway, the latest trends include colour coated finishes, moto details, patchwork, prints, camouflage, crackle, brocade, and quilting. Colour is a must have! Teal, merlot, hunter green, and grey are some of the fab colours to add to the dark blue and black jeans already in your wardrobe. Coated super sleek finishes give skinnies in an array of colours a polished leather like sheen. Go for glossy black to wear in the evening or try coloured burgundy coated jeans with a sheer black blouse. Jeans brocade patterned in colours like navy, grey or black and in textures like velvet are hot! Other must have prints and patterns include plaid, paisley, floral patterns, animal prints and graphics. For something fun and unexpected, try two tone jeans with different colours, washes, or patterns on the front and back. Camo is back! This military inspired print has major cool girl appeal and looks great dressed up or down. Combat ready hues like olive, taupe, hunter green are just as neutral as indigo meaning they will work with items you would wear with jeans. Tough chic is in! Crackle deconstructed finishes which look like peeling paint, are the newest version of shredding and rips. Moto details like zippers and studs and stitching add an instant edge to your outfit. When looking for studded jeans, opt for delicate clusters of pyramid shaped studs that won’t overwhelm your outfit. Try a pair by Black Orchid (available at Moxxi). They have a tasteful hint of black studs on the back pocket.

KNIT What better trend to have in winter than a wool chunky sweater styled fabulously with belts, skirts, jeans, trousers, shorts, or layered with jackets, coats and scarves? It’s a heaven of stylish coziness with everything from sweaters, loose cardigans, or fitted sweaters, long or waist length, thick or thin fabrics, belted, tucked in, dressed up, or down, rolled up sleeves, layered, and the list can go on. No longer just comfy, but rather luxurious, glamorous, or edgy. Sweaters and cardigans come in tens of trends and styles whether oversized or hugging your curves, chunky or thin. Some come with jewellery or leather insertions. The question is which one is yours? Chunky, cabled knits are always great for warming up by the fire on a white, winter night, but the borrowed-from-boys cardigans have just as much staying power on the street. Style & glam up your sweater … accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. Pile on everything from bracelets to rings or necklaces for that glam, rock, rich look. Also try a waist defining belt for a chic look. There are so many ways to glam up a knit/wool look … while keeping warm and cozy. Seriously easy, and equally chic, a sweater dress is a wintertime no-brainer. Whether cabled and mini, or long and sleek, deciding what boots to show off will be your only worry.

Patchwork gives slim and relaxed fit jeans a stylish worn in feel. I love the look of tuxedo panels along the sides of jeans. It adds a slimming effect to your leg in addition to a touch of luxe. Collared denim shirts and moto denim jackets are a must have for everyone’s wardrobe. Look for a jacket in a medium blue denim wash which is flattering and complements dark or coloured jeans. Look for a jacket that is not too boxy and curves in slightly at the waist. The length is important too; the jacket should hit around your hipbone. Two breast pockets are stylish yet functional without adding bulk. Collared styles are classic and cotton blends with at least one to 2 percent stretch are sturdy but still comfy. Head to toe denim is a do! Go ahead and wear that denim shirt with your jeans.

COATS This season coats come every which way: big and billowing or sharply streamlined; boyish or womanly; richly coloured or pale and interesting. |Oversize is one of the newest shapes. Dismiss all thoughts of borrowed-from-the-boyfriend bagginess. The softly curving shoulders, shapely silhouette give a luxurious feel of these cocooning cuts. Chic and sporty bombers and parkas with zippers, deep pockets, wide hoods and multi colours bring a more relaxed feel to these jackets. A Biker Jacket is Literally the perfect transition coat, In leather it is surprisingly warm, without being bulky. Whether sleek or featuring all the biker bells and whistles, it instantly adds street style cred to your look.

FORTY’S STYLING One of the strongest emerging looks is 1940s vintage. The silhouette is all “lady” with nipped-in waists and full skirts and frilly tie neck blouses. The attitude is all woman. So play up your shape. The latest dress styles are the very feminine “fit and flare” silhouettes. They are fitted in the bodice and flare at the hips. The tulip skirt is the new skirt to buy. It’s fitted on top and fluted at the bottom for max swing. Sleek pencil skirts in longer versions, mainly below the knee. If you are curvy, try body skimming pieces that put your natural hourglass on display. Sheath dresses and

10

peplum tops with cleverly placed piping and panel details are wonderful! Skinny belts over dresses or shirts also work well. For figures with fuller hips, draw attention to your top half with a printed shirt or try a fit and flare cut dress that shows off a trim waist. This full skirted style in a dark hue stream lines the lower body. A full skirt adds volume to your hips and creates curves. SHOES and BOOTS Footwear is all about extremes ranging from masculine oxfords to sexy super high boots and pumps. The ankle boot is the strongest style and no closet is complete without the just above the ankle black boot. This style is a perfect for fall with a skirt and bare legs or with a pair of slouchy pants. Moto inspired details and tough chic looks with mesh, The Chelsea boot, a low flat boot, is the ultimate work to weekend boot as it works with jeans and trousers. Knee-High Boots or boots that hit right at the knee have a timeless appeal, not to mention flatter most leg shapes. Joanne Smith, Moxxi Boutique

Planning a wedding? Hosting a “baby shower”? Throwing an engagement party or a birthday bash? All nice and well, till you start to add up the things you have to do...and OMG!, you see that you’re running out of fingers to count them on.

Soo...Where to start?

Of course, first thought (and my recommendation) would be to hire a good event planner or event organizer... and have no worries after that. But for those of you who made the brave decision as taking on the responsibility of entertaining your party guests and sorting out the mountain of tasks necessary to pull it off, no reason to worry. There is a way to ensure all goes off without a hitch while avoiding the additional expense of hiring a planner.

14

The secret to any successful event is taking an organized approach to the project by making sure that nothing important [or marginal] is overlooked. If you have ever seen an event planner in action, they would be the one carrying a big huge binder under one arm and cell phone or tablet in the other. They know that being organized is ninety percent of the battle, same should go for you too, when you should be getting a “10 out of 10” with a Party To Do list.

THEME of the party – I remember the excitement when planning my son’s birthday parties around pirate themes or car themes or superhero themes. Theme parties are not just for kids anymore! Today there are plenty of sophisticated themes for upscale events. Having fun with themes makes guests seem more relaxed and provides topics for conversation. Also, having a theme makes planning so much easier especially for all the other decisions that follow. If you are planning an event for an important milestone, make it memorable with a theme and don’t forget to take into account the individual’s personality, like... a “chocolate” bridal shower for the chocoholic bride-to-be? Keep in mind that themes don’t have to be event specific. You can mix-n-match almost any party theme with any special occasion. DATE & TIME – Selecting a date that will ensure the best possible turnout would be ideal but not always possible. Birthday parties would be nice to celebrate on the same day but usually hard to plan. Weekends are always better than weekdays. Weekends that fall on a holiday can be a hit or miss. Summertime is usually tricky because of vacations and cottage goers. Keep in mind there will always be a few no shows when selecting the date and almost impossible for everyone to attend.

432 KERR STREET, OAKVILLE

905-582-8170

As for the time of the party, keep in mind who will be attending the event, common sense prevails: •

children’s party should be held early in the day;

whole family party, early afternoon;

adults party, evenings.

BUDGET – setting a budget might be the hardest step to keep when planning your event. It is very easy to get carried away with so many amazing decorations and accessories available. If your budget is not set, you run into the chance of blowing it all on food and drinks before anything else. More practical decisions are made when the budget is set and you know exactly how much you have to work with. There are numerous ways to save money during the planning stage: DIY decorations, hosting the party at your place instead of an outside venue, asking everyone to bring one of their signature recipes, etc. Once the budget is established, it can be juggled around in order to cover everything needed for the event. LOCATION of the party – After setting your budget, you will know whether you can splurge to rent a fancy hall, party room or a banquet room. If the budget allows for this, consider your theme when choosing your location. Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a nautical themed party on a sailboat or a golf themed party at an exclusive golf club? The possibilities are really endless if your budget allows! If you are opting for a more intimate get together , consider holding the event at your house. By doing this, you will save a lot of money and the money saved can be used for other things needed for the party.

You will need to make your house presentable prior to the event and you will be the one looking after the clean up when the event is over. ADVICE: Your home is not designed for crowds of 2-3 dozen party goers, and damage may happen during the party, so storing valuables and breakables away is a sensible precaution, unless you want to showcase your collections and talk about them with your guests. Depending on the size of your guest list and how many of them will be attending, having the event at your home to accommodate the party comfortably, may not be possible [even if it is a relatively small party], consider “venting” the idea to family or friends with a bigger home, not forgetting to mention professional cleaning afterwards. If you are lucky, a family member or a really good friend, would be honoured to host! GUEST LIST – This step can be really easy or really hard! A child’s birthday party for instance is very easy. Contact the teacher to get all the names of the kids in your child’s class and it is done. Like most of us sitting down to make the guest list for a wedding, this will be really hard, I will go no further! A baby shower or anniversary party requires a little more time and input from other people. Your location for the event will also determine how many guests could be invited. INVITATIONS – Social media like Facebook, Twitter and email are very popular when sending out invitations for an event but there is something to be said about receiving a paper invitation in the mail. Why not do both? I am delighted when I receive an invitation in my mailbox. There is a vast assortment of affordable templates, high quality designs and easy to personalize when comes to party invitations. MENU – With the increase of issues regarding food allergies to nuts and gluten, vegetarians and vegans, it is

16

important to consider your guest list and have options available for those planning to attend. The nature of your theme of the event will determine the menu you will be serving. Our annual Luau party always includes pulled pork among many other choices. Pizza is a must for kid’s parties. Our family holiday dinners were always large in attendance and a buffet table was the way to go with each family bringing a dish. With access to the internet theme inspired foods can be easily added to your menu. If your budget allows and time is an issue, you might want to consider hiring a caterer. Consider all the options and select the one that is right for you.

checked your checklist and you are now able to sit back and join the fun of the party. Looking back you are glad that you took the time to plan every last detail and it shows when seeing your guests having fun. I guess you might be thinking for an...encore? Dini Lamers Dini & Co

ENTERTAINMENT – Music is a must at any event! Again with the internet, mobile phones and cable, there is no excuse not to have music for your event. A rock and roll station for your rock and roll theme party can be found on any of the genre channels from your cable provider. MP3 players and iPhones are easily connected to your sound system. Speakers placed outside and connected to a wireless network are great for the outdoors. Of course, budget permitting, a live band or DJ is worth the extra cost to liven up any event. Other entertainment you might want to consider is magicians or clowns depending on the age of your guests. An even better cost saver would be to search out the local talent among your friends and family. There is always a budding star willing to show off their talent for free!

home decor events fashion gifts

DECORATIONS and accessories – If decorating is something you have a passion for, now is your time to shine! It is amazing how many DIY projects are accessible online and how much money you can save. Again, the theme of your event will make everything so much easier when choosing the decorations.

REALTORS, STAGERS & INTERIOR DESIGNERS welcome!

FUN – The festive day has finally arrived and everything is running smoothly. You have checked and double

water if water gives us the food and life itself, why not expect to give us the fuel for our transportation? too much to ask?

The cars of yesteryears are for those with a soft spot for the glory days of the “chrome-n-muscle” even though those old beasts are merely crude halves of what you can get today in dealers’ showrooms, before considering performance cars. Nothing wrong with nostalgia if it’s not holding back progress. But we, the drivers in a hurry to get places, don’t need nostalgia; we need those mass produced cars that give us most mileage and comfort for the dollar and let us breathe in a crowded city. After several years driving the same car, inevitably we will reach the moment when the new shinny cars start to have more appeal than the one you’re driving and, replace the loved-less clunker. The dilemma: which one to choose? Gasoline and diesel on one side, or hybrids and other new technologies on the other side...the victor from the “battle for the minds and wallets”. Many technologies are in mid-evolution, some going in

18

contradictory directions which brings confusion to our decision, but we humans, have to explore all avenues. At least we get kudos for that.

The old contenders: fossil fuels [oil, gas, coal] feeding combustion engines or producing electricity for electric cars relying on Lithium ion batteries [a rare earth metal which is in limited supply]. Here we’ll include the hybrids which are a mere transitional step toward a sustainable technology.

> >

Without opening a new debate here, let’s agree that when we are thinking about new technologies for mass transportation, the source for energy has to be renewable or limitless, while the exhaust not killing us with pollution. That’s the starting point.

n o i t c a r max t ! r e t n i in w guaranteed... breathtaking PERFORMANCE!

The new contenders: wind, sunlight and water [yes, WATER, not a typo] creating electricity and powering electric cars travelling on a grid, cars having the batteries made from renewable materials [which don’t rely on limited supply components] or supplying hydrogen for fuel cell engines. The carbon footprint of each option varies wildly and it can be trimmed to a minimum, depending on the methods employed to create the transportation energy that will ultimately produce the transportmile (or transport-kilometre).

THE PUZZLE

WATER! Amazingly, we discover more and more things to do with water, from food to cleaning, and industrial processes. The age of aerogel. We use water everywhere, but fuel. Surprise!: water has the ability to take us places, literally, meaning transportation not river rafting Water, is the most secretive chemical that we have on Earth. Chemists thought that discovering the H20 formula, of this simple liquid that freezes at 0oC and boils at 100oC all about it was known, and moved on to more complicated chemicals. Yet the simplicity of this formulation can not explain many properties of the water that makes scientists still scratch their heads.

WINTER TIRES!

Fuelling your car from basic WATER to create propulsion, understandably it seems a fantasy today, as we see water as part of the food chain or landscape decor or a freeway for cruises and cargo shipping. But water as FUEL? 675 Steeles Ave East, - Milton

F-CELL racer For one thing, water is abundant, in a true limitless supply and if we can ďŹ nd a way to fuel our transportation from its energy that we ignored for millenniums, our transportation problems are solved, pollution included. One thing we know about water, and we see it daily on the planet, water is a massive kinetic, thermal and chemical energy carrier, in essence attempting continuously to balance hot with cold and high with low [as altitude] , at times giving us the year long dream of perfect vacation, the Kodak moments. Water has a pattern of continuously absorbing, carrying and dispensing energy and seeks balance, peaceful medium if not disturbed by outside forces but deadly if instigated by quakes [tsunami] or winds [hurricanes, typhoons].

HYDROGEN combustion

20

We invented the water mill, then the hydro dams to tap into these perpetual cycles, and recently toyed with the idea of hydro marine farms to harness tidal waves and oceanic rivers [under surface massive currents]. Abundant energy, with predictable repeat cycles, available 24/7, year round, hence by tapping it, the potential to generate reliably, electricity.

F-CELL sedan Doing that at a mega-scale, as a way of life, will eventually lead to changing our paved roads into a grid of electric roads which will supply the power to keep the electric cars in motion. Cars may feature a battery acting as a range extender for “off the grid drive” and much later, we will have wheelless cars propelled on “revolutionary” magnetic grids.

F-CELL sports

fuel station

But as long as Earth’s gravity is working, and the Moon keeps creating the tide, with oceans regulating thermally the weather, the hydro energy, is the only source that fits the bill on all aspects. Harnessing the biggest forces on the planet, can give us more than enough electricity to power thousands of electric mass transit systems, on top of the 188 systems already built all over the world. But for now, we still have to face the “individual” solution, so, back from the future [dreamland] and let’s have a look at the options of our time. Hydrogen fuel In recent years, on many car scientists’ priority lists hydrogen inched up to the top spot because of the very few negatives about using it in transportation.

The “revolutionary” of today will become the “evolutionary” to our children and “reality” to our grand-grand children, when lithium ion / polymer batteries would be just a mere memory of our struggle in finding a sustainable transport option. The electric / magnetic roads would require electricity which has to come from a source that won’t get depleted or be dependant on weather, like wind and sunlight power, which are favoured by many progressive minds of today.

F-CELL SUV

22

The two options we have [so far] are: re-purposing the common internal combustion engines which will burn hydrogen instead of gasoline, and fuel cells, which will use hydrogen and air to create electricity, without any burning. The convenience of this method [to combine the hydrogen and oxygen] relies on the fact that both elements are abundant around us and the result is transport energy with a “cleaner burn”. After the water molecule is split, [let’s say through electrolysis], hydrogen has to be compressed and

liquefied to be able to be delivered to us, handled somewhat like liquid propane. That will require a major restructuring of the supply and fuel delivery system and here is where the political battles start, with heavy supporters on both side of the fence. Using hydrogen and air mix in internal combustion engines would require only a few structural modifications to the cars we have on the roads today, mainly adding the pressurized fuel tanks and minimal engine components. This option is understandably favoured by the car industry because the manufacturing infrastructure stays the same, no political storms to be had except that hydrogen/air internal combustion engines also emit NOx gases which have much nigher pollution factor of COx emissions, a detail on which I expect the environmentalists will keep a very close watch if this technology gains mass acceptance.

The other option for water as a primary fuel source for transportation energy is the fuel cell membrane technology [F-CELL] basically a reversed electrolysis. This type of “engine” creates electricity to power an electric vehicle, either recharging its battery, in essence acting as a range extender, or, as the main drive, with a smaller battery on board as a motion starter, the fuel cell acting on speeds over 7 km/h. Using liquid hydrogen and air to create electric the propulsion has the advantage that we totally move away from burning [any] materials, while at the tail pipe is only water. Nay sayers point out that, most of the hydrogen presently is obtained from natural gas, not water or bio-generation, [arguing with merit] that this situation mirrors the story of the oil a century ago for a mere 50,000 cars world wide, which became the present nightmare when more than one billion vehicles and trains are busy travelling the planet. What is happening under the hood, how simple or complex is the power plant producing that transportation energy taking us to a destination, is not important to us, the drivers. The costs, for developing this fuel cell technology and its complex hydrogen distribution network will work themselves out, as they are only dollars and cents. But the F-CELL hoopla gaining speed by the day, is barrelling down a short stretch to the finish line where its replacement, the electric vehicle and magnetic grid await patiently to take over, in the right circumstances. I had to dig deep in my search for answers to find a lonely evaluation of efficiency for fuel cell cars, translated into MPG [miles per gallon]: 42

fuel station

Well, that discovery was a disappointment, knowing by now that latest refinements in gasoline/plug in/hybrids reach 80-100 MPG! Recently, a diesel prototype from Volkswagen doubled that to...180 MPG [1L/100km], which is like driving on air with a hint of diesel! Very few “F-CELL” people dare to predict how long till we could have a renewable source of hydrogen...[I am still looking for water to fill in this answer]. Even fewer people talk about the energy demand and cost of producing the actual liquid fuel, let alone the carbon footprint of the whole hydrogen saga if obtained from sources other than water. So why all the fuss and trouble with F-CELL cars, when with each passing day, more battery electric vehicles [BEV] unveiled by same car makers, are passing acceptance milestones with flying colours from public and officials alike? What is the rationale for a CAR powered by a fuel cell in 2025? Is this a PR ploy just to be in the news, to be seen on the front line of a technology war?

F-CELL sports I don’t belong to the nay sayers but this is my own take on fuel cell for cars. Fuel cell electric power generators are a great answer to the diesel type generators for on demand or supplemental electricity, critical power back up systems, remote power stations, even electric power for small towns not on the grid. The list goes on and on...but cars? What’s really important and still positive about fuel cell and hydrogen [from water] is that we have lots of water and using fuel cells, regardless the application, would send back to nature clean water, which I suppose is environmentally right and would please Mother Nature. Sergiu Vexler sergiuv@GTAtrends.com FYI: My next car will be a BEV! I don’t see why should I take the hydrogen “scenic detour” when simpler, BEV cars, are cruising silently the city streets by now. Some boasting 400+km/charge, or city-cars with 150km/range recharging in only 10 minutes 80% power, or sports cars with top speeds of 350 km/h for those in a hurry. More on this later.

On our trek to ďŹ nd and touch the elusive soulmate, poems songs and paintings unfolded the coverings of the body, one pleat at the time, teasing our imagination, or sometimes offering blunt revelations. Covered with dabs of colours and shapes, the painter hung a sign on that body, guiding for the entrance to a feeling, or a hidden mood, or an idea, or plain beauty as a crisp or suave welcoming statement for more to be discovered, if you persist. This was a gentle HELLO! to the world of body art, where very few things are...gentle.

28

For generations, the excitement and creative frenzy overows us when preparing for social celebrations, a perfect excuse to revamp our look and repurpose our bodies for the day with a bolder attitude at the hands of a makeup artist or, simply, a cousin with the knack for it.

Specific painted embellishments for hands, face, neck, feet, shoulders are done in colours and details to match the purpose. This is the moment for the skin artist to marvel... This is their art. Masterpieces of the great painters, sculptors, glass blowers and potters, can be enjoyed generations later, and searched for new meanings and beauty. That’s the legacy: to be appreciated and remembered. So what’s so different about Body Art? EVERYTHING!

Multidimensional art is convincing more senses and makes it easier to reach that place where we can feel one-with-theartist. Body Art, as a multidimensional, is live art, where fluid motion [or its absence] is an intrinsic part of the message. Unlike masterpieces from the great painters that sometime took years to be finished, Body Art, does not have such luxury. It’s a one day wonder, most of the day spent on creating it, artists ignoring the painful truth that all will be washed off few hours later. That explains why this medium is poised, boasting vivid colours and strange props. Calm or relentless, with soothing looks or probing daggers, as the artist and the model seek an instant unison with the audience appraising the art beyond the naked body. Body Art shows, complete with catwalks and scoring judges [plus droves of photographers] are becoming a common event, in many parts of the world, a fun yearly tradition. Those more established shows, attract international participation, artistic teams competing for the crowning prizes, and, just like in sports, yesterday,... matters only on paper, not on the catwalk. One level up above local shows: THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS! To Body Art painters, World Championships are their Super Bowl, or The Masters, or World Series where art and ego walk hand in hand, with a smile or a grin. eye exams

Reading a book, a newspaper or watching a favourite show on tv, will tell us quickly when is time for new eyeglasses.

During an eye exam, an optometrist does much more than just determine your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. He or she will also check the health condition of your eyes and scans for common eye diseases, assess how your eyes work together knowing that your eyes are an “open book”, an indicator of your overall health.

But these are not the only reasons for Optometrists and other eye an eye exam. specialists often are the first health

care professionals to detect chronic systemic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and other various diseases. If already knowing that you have diabetes, an annual eye exam should be mandatory. If you have wellcontrolled diabetes, a dilated eye examination is mandatory every year [covered by OHIP]. Diabetes is the third leading cause of blindness in North America. If your diabetes is not under control, your doctor may recommend an examination every three to six months.

60

For example, diabetes can cause small blood vessel leaks or bleeding inside of the eye, sometimes without any symptoms or subtly symptoms. which can lead to vision loss. Your eye doctor will likely detect this during a complete eye exam. It is estimated that one-third of North Americans who have diabetes don’t know it; an optometrists may detect the disease before your primary care physician does, especially if you’re overdue for your annual physical. Diabetic patients have a higher risk of developing glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy, all visually destabilizing diseases. Early detection is critical in the treatment of diabetes-related eye disease . If you have other chronic medical problems such as hypertension, allergies, arthritis or other health conditions, you really should schedule an eye exam annually. Eye examinations are an important part of health maintenance for

everyone. Adults should have their eyes tested to keep their prescriptions current and to check for early signs of eye disease. Children’s eye exams are important to ensure normal vision development. Eye exams for children play an important role in ensuring normal vision development and academic achievement of all kids. A child who cannot see with one eye will not tell you that they cannot see out of that eye if their other is eye, is normal. Therefore it is vital to have their eyes assessed by an optometrist to make sure both eyes are developing normally. If discovered at an early age, an optometrist can help with children’s vision problems, normally before it manifests into a lazy eye, something it cannot be fully treated. Vision is closely linked to the learning process

and parents with young children should keep this aspect in mind. Children with undetected vision problems often will have trouble with their schoolwork. Many times, children will not complain of vision problems simply because they don’t know what “normal” vision is. If your child is performing poorly at school, make sure to have his or her eyes examined by an eye doctor to see if vision is the primary cause of the problem, as more than 80 percent of information children receive in classrooms is presented visually. Children with risk factors for vision problems may need their first eye exam earlier than six months of age and may need more frequent eye exams throughout childhood.

HEALTH

Strabismus Strabismus is defined as crossed or turned eyes. The examiner will check your eyes’ alignment to be sure that they are working together. Strabismus causes problems with depth perception and can lead to amblyopia.

Eye teaming problems Examples of children vision risk factors: A premature birth or low birth weight; Mother’s infections during pregnancy (rubella, venereal disease, herpes, AIDS); Child developmental delays; Turned or crossed eyes (strabismus); Family history of eye disease; High refractive error or anisometropia Other physical illness or disease Children who currently have been prescribed eyeglasses or contact lenses should have annual eye exams In addition to evaluating your eyes for glasses and contacts, your eye doctor will check your eyes for eye diseases and other possible preoblems that could lead to vision loss. In a comprehensive exam, your eye doctor will be looking for:

Refractive error This refers to nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Refractive errors are corrected with eyeglasses, contacts or refractive surgery.

Amblyopia This occurs when the eyes are turned or when one eye has a much different prescription than the other. The brain will “shut off” the image from the turned or blurry eye. Left untreated, amblyopia can stunt the visual development of the affected eye, resulting in permanent vision impairment. Amblyopia is often treated by patching the stronger eye for periods of time.

62

Even if you eyes appear to be properly aligned, it’s possible they do not work together efficiently as a team. Such binocular vision problems can cause headaches, eye strain and other problems that can affect reading and other near vision tasks.

Focusing problems These problems can range from incompletely developed focusing skills in children to normal age-related declines in focusing ability (presbyopia) among older adults.

Eye diseases Many eye diseases, such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, have no symptoms in their early stages. Your eye doctor will check the health of your eyes inside and out for signs of early problems. In most cases, early detection and treatment of eye diseases can help reduce your risk for permanent vision loss. People who have risk factors for glaucoma should have there eyes examined on annual basis. Risk factors of glaucoma included being having high intra ocular pressure, having positive family history of having glaucoma, people over the age of 50, and diabetics. Diabetic patients should have there eye examined yearly and are covered by OHIP yearly no matter what age they are.

Other diseases Eye doctors can detect early signs of some conditions and diseases by looking at your eye’s blood vessels, retina and so forth. Your eye doctor may be able to tell you if you are developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol or other problems.

Treatment Plans Treatment plans following your eye exam can include a prescription for glasses or contact lenses

Eye diagnistic equipment

to correct refractive errors, vision therapy or strabismus surgery for binocular vision problems, medical treatment for eye disease or simply a recommendation that you have your eyes examined again within a speciďŹ c time frame.

Your eye doctor also may recommend that you take eye vitamins or vision supplements to maintain good eye health or to help alleviate speciďŹ c problems like dry eyes. travelling health-smart Planning a holiday to an exotic location or to a resort for some solitude?

The further away your destination is, the more preparations you have to make to be able to cope with health emergencies.

Just like all things in life, travel is not without health risk, but this risk can be minimized with some preparation. Your pharmacist is a great resource for travel health advice. All travellers can beneďŹ t from advanced wellness planning, and the destination you have chosen, the amount of time to be spent there, and any planned activities or interactions are aspects to consider. It is recommended that people with pre-existing health conditions consult with their Healthcare Professional for preparations tailored to their individual needs. Being a health-smart traveller, you can consider the following tips for safe travel:

Vaccinations Make sure immunizations, for you and children travelling with you, are up-to-date. http://health.gov. on.ca/en/public/programs/immunization/docs/schedule. pdf You may need speciďŹ c travel vaccines depending on your destination and the activities you intend to do there. Plan ahead as it can take several months to complete some of these vaccination schedules that require multiple doses. Talk to your Healthcare Provider about your chosen destination and any immunizations recommended (e.g. Hepatitis A and B vaccines, Typhoid, etc).

Destination Information and Advisories Review information about your travel destination when planning a trip, and shortly before you leave. At www.travel.gc.ca you will find country-specific Travel Advice and Advisories. This information includes important travel details on security, local laws and culture, entry and exit requirements and health. Note, that if the region or the country you will be visiting becomes subject to a government “Travel Advisory”, this could affect your trip cancellation insurance or your travel health insurance.

Travelling with Medications General Information: Carry a note with you that lists both the generic and trade names for any medications you take, as well as what the medication is used for. Your Pharmacist can help you compile this list. Leave all medications in their original, labelled containers. Do not try to save luggage space by combining medications into a single container. Customs officers may look for discrepancies, so ensure the name on your prescription and medication label matches the name on your boarding pass. Keep your medication and documentation in your carry-on bag in case your checked luggage is delayed reaching your destination. For any prescription or over-thecounter medications that you normally use, take more than enough supply to last your entire trip. Common weather issues or other delays may prolong your

HEALTH

stay beyond the planned duration. Also, be prepared in case your medication is lost or stolen. Be cautious buying medication outside Canada unless you have been advised to do so by a Healthcare Professional. Medications That Require Specific Temperature Storage: Talk to your Pharmacist about travelling safely with medications if they have specific storage requirements for stability (e.g. refrigeration). Needles or Syringes: Needles and syringes may be difficult to purchase abroad, so take more than enough to last for your entire trip. Carry a medical certificate from your physician explaining that the needles or syringes are for medical use. Check With Your Airline About Security Restrictions: All airlines have restrictions on carrying sharp objects (such as needles) and liquids in your carryon baggage. For additional information about what you can bring on a plane refer to http://travel.gc.ca/ travelling/baggage-security/what-to-pack

Travel Kits and First Aid First aid supplies and medications may not always be readily available in other countries, or may be different from those available in Canada. A good Travel Health Kit would contain First Aid supplies with enough items to prevent illness, handle minor injuries, and manage pre-existing medical conditions for more than the duration of your trip. You can consider taking a First Aid and CPR course before you travel. It is important to learn how to use First Aid supplies properly to get the best benefit, particularly if your journey is in an area where local medical assistance is several hours away. There are a number of medications that can be purchased over-the-counter to include in your Travel Kit. Ask for advice from your Healthcare Professional if you have any questions. These medications may include: - allergy medication such as an antihistamine (e.g. Benadryl®) or epinephrine auto-injector (e.g. EpiPen®). - cough and cold medications such as decongestants, cough suppressants, or throat lozenges. - pain and fever medication, such as acetylsalicylic

66

acid (e.g. Aspirin®), ibuprofen (e.g. Advil®), or acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol®). - stomach and intestinal medications such as antacids, laxatives and antidiarrheal medication. For acute diarrhea, consider loperamide (e.g. Imodium®). Packets of oral rehydration salts can be used to treat dehydration caused by diarrhea. -skin therapies such as anti-inflammatory cream for minor, non-infected skin irritation like itching caused by bug bites or poison ivy (e.g. hydrocortisone cream, Cortate®); or antibacterial creams to apply to wounds to prevent infection (e.g. Polysporin®); or antibacterial hand sanitizer and antiseptic wipes to clean wounds (e.g. alcohol swabs). - motion sickness therapies that include dimenhydrinate (e.g. Gravol®), scopolamine patches (e.g. Transderm-V®), Sea-Bands® (which apply accupoint pressure to the wrists), and ginger tablets (herbal product). -sun protection that includes a sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher, and that has broad-spectrum coverage with both UVA and UVB protection. Wear sun-protective clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses with 100% UV protection to minimize exposure to the sun’s harmful rays. Other items to consider: Blister pads or moleskin Disposable latex or vinyl gloves Scissors for cutting tape, bandages, etc. Tensor bandage for sprains Tweezers for removing ticks, splinters, etc. Ear plugs Extra pair of glasses or contacts and a copy of your prescription Water purification filters Condoms

Travel Health Documentation Consider travelling with the following health documentation: - Proof of your travel insurance coverage and emergency contact phone number for your travel health insurance provider; - Your Immunization record; - Your International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis for certain vaccines, as required; - A card (or a list) with the following information in case of a medical emergency:
