Its area is about 200 square km of mountains, jungle, historic ruins and over 100 beaches of transparent green water, linked by well kept trails. The “Ilha Grande” is located 3 hours south of Rio (2 by car + 1 by boat), on a region known as the “Costa Verde” (Green Coast), the largest remaining area in Brazil covered with Atlantic Rain Forest. The island hosted Brazil's largest high security prison (Brazil’s Alcatraz) during most of the 20th century; reason why it was kept relatively isolated and largely unspoiled. In 1994 the prison was closed and the island became a state park with no roads and cars, which makes it a paradise for hiking and boating.
