A Day in the Life
7:00 AM
I usually wake up at this time to prepare breakfast to enjoy at home with my husband. With the flexibility to work from home two out of five days of the week as well as flexible reporting time, I’m able to spend some time to recharge myself for the day ahead before heading out to work.
9:00 AM
I start my workday by checking my email and calendar to see if there are any urgent tasks that need my immediate attention. If there are, I tackle them first thing in the morning to ensure that I’m on top of things from the get-go.
As a senior manager at the Ministry of Education (MOE) Science Centre Development Office (SCDO), I’m part of the team tasked with supporting the Science Centre Board (SCB) in the development of the new Science Centre (NSC) in Singapore.
The creation of this exciting and innovative new centre aligns well with MOE’s broader strategic interest to further science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in Singapore. As a science and mathematics teacher, I’m personally invested in the development of the NSC. My teaching experience has also allowed me to provide some input on programming ideas from a teacher’s perspective.
Every day, I do a check-in with my Senior Assistant Director to discuss the progress of the NSC project, and to address any potential roadblocks. Our team uses SG-Teams (Microsoft Teams for MOE) to work concurrently on important work pieces and to minimise back-andforth emails.
10:00 AM
As the policy deskhead for the Science Centre, we work closely with our MOE colleagues from other divisions to support both the Science Centre and the NSC project. For instance, we work with our Curriculum Planning and Development Division as well as Preschool Education Branch colleagues. Today, we’re meeting to discuss how best to promote STEM education for students of all ages.
11:30 AM
During my lunch break, I take some time to relax by eating with my branch colleagues. As SCDO is a part of the Organisational Development and Psychology Branch of the Human Resource (HR) Group, I also get the chance to better understand the role HR plays in MOE.
12:30 PM
After lunch, I spend some time working on the various deliverables and project tasks that need to be completed. This could include anything from writing funding papers to reviewing presentation items.
I work closely with other partners, such as Ministry of Finance (MOF), Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), National Parks Board (NParks), Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Singapore Land Authority (SLA), to ensure that the NSC would fit well into the broader Jurong Lake District development.
I also collaborate with our communications colleagues from SCB and MOE to plan for announcements and events related to the NSC, such as the unveiling of the NSC design by Minister Chan in December 2022.
3:00 PM
I travel to Science Centre Singapore to have my regular meeting with representatives from SCB, JTC Corporation and the multi-disciplinary team led by Architects 61. We discuss the progress of the NSC project and iron out decisions that need to be made. Sometimes, we also discuss and prepare for work trips, such as attending the World Expo 2022 in Dubai, and visits to notable science museums around the world to meet with industry leaders and learn about innovations that could be incorporated into the NSC.
6:00 PM
As the workday comes to a close, I take some time to wrap up outstanding matters and prepare for the next day. Although this role requires a lot of coordination, it’s incredibly fulfilling to be part of a project that broadens my horizons as a teacher and allows me to contribute towards STEM education in Singapore!
