A Day in the Life

7:30 AM

Since work starts at 8.30am, I’ll wake up an hour earlier to freshen up and have a light breakfast. I usually make myself a cup of milk tea, and spend some time online to keep upto-date with the latest news in food technology and innovations.

Working in a regulatory role, keeping abreast of such developments provides me with insights to better prioritise and establish regulations to facilitate such innovations.

9:00 AM

In my current role, my team and I facilitate pre-market approvals of innovative food products and ingredients through safety assessments based on risk and science.

Because of how dynamic my work is, no two days are the same. On some days, I would be looking at food safety data to determine the public health risks of various foodborne hazards. On another day, for example, I could be at our industry partner’s office for a quick sync-up meeting between business associations and other government agencies on alternative proteins.

Different government agencies work closely and collaboratively to ensure a Wholeof-Government approach in building up the alternative protein ecosystem. We would brainstorm for ways to overcome challenges faced in the alternative protein sector, ranging from research, infrastructure, regulatory matters and talent development.

Following that, I would hop onto a virtual meeting with food safety regulators from other countries. As the regulations and science surrounding novel foods are complex and evolving, SFA cannot tackle these alone. This is why we have to maintain warm relationships with our overseas counterparts to push for internationally recognised guidelines and standards.

12:30 PM

When my colleagues and I are at my industry partner’s office in town, we’ll take the chance to explore a new lunch spot in the area. If I’m working from home, I’ll partake in wholesome, comforting homecooked lunch and spend time with my mother. My favourite dish would be my mother’s fish soup, made from locally-grown seabass.

2:30 PM

I typically schedule most calls with novel food companies in the afternoon, as many of those I oversee are based in Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Due to differences in time zones, the mid-afternoon slot is most suitable for all parties. These companies, mostly start-ups, are developing all sorts of novel food products, such as cultured meat. Their passion amazes me and gives me a strong sense of purpose in what I do!

During these calls, I’ll discuss regulatory matters with the companies and guide them on the safety assessments required when they seek our approval before marketing their products. My colleague from the Industry Development and Community Partnership Division will usually join in as well, to advise companies on their business needs and infrastructural development. On days without meetings, I’ll spend time reviewing safety assessments submitted by the companies to make sure their products are safe for consumption.

6:00 PM

I end my day with a walk at the Nature Park near my home. Being with nature helps me to relax and gather my thoughts, while giving me a chance to clock in some exercise after a long day!
