From Palaces to Beaches: INDIA’S DIVERSE L ANDSCAPES
If you’re thinking about a trip to majestic India but don’t know where to start, don’t worry! We’ve got all
the answers to help you start planning an unforgettable adventure on the subcontinent.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH INDIA?
India is a country of remarkable diversity, where every corner reveals something new and unexpected. Its vast size means that the culture and traditions of its people vary dramatically as you travel. From language and politics to clothing and music, the differences are striking. In the south, life is shaped by the coast – a relaxed, sundrenched lifestyle that contrasts with the fast-paced energy of the northern cities, where the streets hum with activity.
When it comes to food, south Indian cuisine is bold and flavourful, with spicy dishes often featuring fish and coconut, and served with rice. In the north, wheat takes centre stage, with meals frequently accompanied by soft chapattis or hearty roti. What remains constant, wherever you go, is the warmth of the people. Friendly, welcoming and eager to share their stories, they make every visit feel personal. That’s why exploring these fascinating cultural contrasts is a true delight.
WHAT WILL I SEE AND WHERE?
The north of the country is packed full of famous sights you won’t want to miss, each offering a window into the country’s rich history and vibrant culture. Near the Indo-Pakistan border lies Amritsar, the spiritual heart of Sikhism, where the shimmering Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) stands as a symbol of peace and devotion.
Head to the famed ‘Golden Triangle’ and step back in time as you wander through the 17th-century walls of Old Delhi, then marvel at the towering sandstone Qutub Minar in New Delhi. A visit to the stunning Taj Mahal is simply a must. Nearby, the mighty Agra Fort invites you to explore its royal chambers and hidden courtyards or join a tiger safari amidst the thick, exotic forests of Ranthambore National Park.
Completing the ‘Golden Triangle’ is Jaipur, the enchanting ‘Pink City.’
Consistently rated among India’s top destinations, it is worth a visit to see sights such as the ‘Palace of Winds’ (Hawa Mahal), with its hundreds of ornate balconies which bathes the city in an orange-pink glow. Venture to the south and it’s like visiting a different country. After the buzz and
energy of the country’s northern cities, the south offers a soothing escape. Relax on the pristine beaches around Marari or drift along Kerala’s serene backwaters aboard a traditional houseboat, watching life unfold at a gentle pace. India’s colonial past is much in evidence in the south, with Cochin’s Mattancherry Palace one of the many highlights. Built by the Portuguese in
1557, this is a true gem, adorned with a number of impressive Kerala frescoes depicting the Rajas of Cochin. Coffee, tea and spice plantations abound, filling the air with exotic scents. Take the opportunity to visit a tea plantation, where mistcovered slopes offer breathtaking views and a peaceful escape.
WHERE SHOULD I GO FIRST? OR SHOULD I VISIT THE NORTH AND SOUTH IN ONE GO?
This is one only you can answer – but luckily, there are plenty of options. Many visitors start with the ‘Golden Triangle’, but then revisit to see more after falling in love with this magical country. Or perhaps you’ll choose to do it all in a tour that takes in not just the biggest sights but also the subtlety and nuances of this beautiful land. Whatever you decide, one thing’s for sure, you’ll be making memories that will last a lifetime.

our Brand Ambassador in
Penny Smith, India India India
Penny Smith, travel ambassador, joined our Beyond the Golden Triangle tour, where she discovered exotic flavours and bustling cities. Here she tells you about her experience, and why India should be at the top of your travel list.
When we first touched down in Delhi, our guide told us: ‘India is a country full of colours, of wonders, of nature and architecture’. He was not wrong. From the incredible sight of the Taj Mahal, to tiger spotting in Ranthambore, tasting delicious sambal soup and fast-paced rickshaw rides, India truly was a wonder.
This was my second escorted holiday and it was fantastic to experience the trip with my fellow travellers. While the free time meant we could explore different places, a highlight was coming together in the evening to share our stories over dinner.
“I threw myself head first into India’s delicious cuisine with unusual yet glorious breakfasts - sambal soup was my favourite! “
Our Holiday Director and local guides were awash with information in every place we visited and their expert knowledge made each trip memorable. We were up at 5am to visit the Taj Mahal, but the early start meant cooler temperatures and fewer queues, so we could truly appreciate the once in a lifetime experience.
In between excursions, we had plenty of free time to explore each destination. For me, that meant shopping. From incredible made to measure shirts to marble plates and brightly coloured saris, there were hidden treasures around every corner.
I threw myself head first into India’s delicious cuisine with unusual yet glorious breakfasts - sambal soup was my favourite! An aromatic lentil soup with aubergine, tomato tamarind, it definitely set me up for the day. We also enjoyed a mouthwatering cauliflower Gobi curry and an interesting, pudding-like concoction – sadly the name escapes me! As well as our included meals, there was ample opportunity to try local flavours along the way. In Delhi we made a stop at a splendid carpet shop where we learned from the experts about their intricate craft, as we sipped mellow cardamom and cinnamon tea. I made a point of indulging in a cup of creamy masala chai at every opportunity.
Taj, Tigers, Temples & Rajasthan’s Palaces
Experience the essence of North India on this captivating 15-day journey that includes a world wonder, exotic wildlife and golden temples.
Your journey begins in the bustling city of Delhi. Uncover all the highlights on a sightseeing tour, which includes a rickshaw ride through the fabled street bazaar of Chandni Chowk. Amritsar is your next destination, famed for its Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib Gurudwara. You’ll visit the temple and also have the chance to experience a Palki Ceremony there on an optional excursion.
You’ll journey to the Indo-Pakistan ‘Wagah Border’ village to watch the daily changing of the guard – a ceremony full of patriotic fervour and representing the rivalry and respect between the two countries.
In Agra, an early start for a dawn visit to the Taj Mahal is worth the early alarm - seeing the sun’s light dance on the white marble is a truly breathtaking experience. You’ll also visit the Agra Fort and Itmad-ud-Duala known as ‘Baby Taj’.
Your time in Agra comes to an end as you make your way to Ranthambore National Park. Thick forest interspersed with pretty waterfalls, provide the perfect habitat for more than 300 species of birds, as well as crocodile, hyena, jackal and more. You’ll head out on morning and afternoon safaris in search of these local residents and if you’re lucky, you may spot the elusive tiger or the even rarer leopard.
You’ll delve into the cultural highlights of India’s Rajasthan with stays in Udaipur and Jodhpur exploring incredible sights such as the Mehran Garh Fort. And if that wasn’t enough, an evening cruise on Pichola Lake will take you to Jagmandir Island where sandstone palaces appear to rise from the water.

It’s not just Africa which is home to fascinating wildlife, head to Asia and you may see tigers prowling through India’s jungles, orangutans swinging in Borneo’s treetops or elephants roaming in Sri Lanka’s national parks. Be immersed in the excitement of encountering a rare, wild animal in its natural surroundings while travelling with us on a carefully-crafted tour.
INDIA
Delve into the wilderness of Ranthambore National Park in search of India’s most elusive creatures. Imagine spotting a majestic tiger moving silently through the undergrowth or a sloth bear ambling across your path. The park’s lush forests and cascading waterfalls create a breathtaking backdrop, teeming with over 300 bird species and diverse wildlife, meaning each safari promises to be an unforgettable adventure. Keep your eyes peeled for crocodiles basking by the lakes, hyenas lurking in the shadows and the rare, graceful leopard blending into the landscape.
SRI LANKA
See wildlife roam free amid the lush landscapes of Yala National Park. Leopards silently prowl through dense jungle, while elephants gather at water holes. Morning safaris are a feast for the senses, with peacocks in full display and the stirring calls of exotic birds echoing through the trees. As the golden light of sunrise washes over vast grasslands and rugged rock formations, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for sloth bears, playful monkeys, and crocodiles lurking near the water’s edge.
BORNEO
Borneo’s wildlife is nothing short of magical. In the ancient rainforests, mist lingers in the treetops as the calls of gibbons echo through the air and orangutans move gracefully from branch to branch. Visit an orangutan rehabilitation centre where orphaned and injured orangutans cared for. Along the forest floors, look for pygmy elephants as they meander through dense greenery, and look up to the jungle canopy where you may see proboscis monkeys, with their comical noses. On a visit to a conservation centre, see the world's smallest species of bear - the sun bear.
The jungle comes to life as you cruise down the Kinabatangan River at dusk. Look out for the
fireflies putting on a natural light display.
CHINA
In China’s misty bamboo forests, pandas embody tranquillity and charm. Their gentle, peaceful nature is captivating as they quietly nibble on bamboo shoots, often lounging in a relaxed, carefree manner. A visit to a panda breeding research centre offers a rare chance to see these endangered creatures up close. Watch as the pandas feed and tumble clumsily over one another, playfully wrestling like oversized, fury toddlers.

Postcard from Japan - Jules’ travel story
a postcard from Jules in Japan
I took my first guided holiday about 11 years ago and have since visited a whole host of different countries on escorted tours. I’ve always liked that I don’t have to think about organising anything, and also enjoyed meeting others in the group. My partner Nick, on the other hand, has never taken a tour before so our visit to Japan was a brand new experience for him. And what an experience.
Simona, our Holiday Director, welcomed us at the airport with a huge smile that lasted the duration of the tour.
Our first stop was Tokyo. Here we took a guided city tour which started at the Meiji Jengu Shrine. It’s set in a man-made forest in the city. It was so surreal, one minute we are driving through the bustling city and the next we’ve parked up and walking along serene pathways where the only sound is the crunch of the gravel under your feet.
In the Shinjuku district, neon signs adorn almost every building and the ‘Shinjuku cat’ creates mischief on a massive digital display. We walked to the Golden Gai where a maze of narrow alleys are lined with tiny bars – I’m not sure we’d have been able to find the same bar twice!
Mount Fuji and Hakone were next on the list – we caught our first glimpse of Mount Fuji as we left the city and we drove to the Fujinomiya 5th Station halfway up the volcano. There were some great views of the surrounding area but clouds had started for gather so we couldn’t quite see the top.
One of Nick's favourite stops was Matsumoto Castle which we visited on our way to Takayama. It’s a black, 6-storey castle which contrasts against Japanese Alps.
“Japan is a country full of surprises and just waiting to take your breath away.”
It was quite a drive up to Takayama along winding roads through the mountains, but looking out the window you are faced with incredible views. I loved the old town - beautifully preserved buildings possessing distinctive black facades, home galleries, eateries and shops. In the afternoon we drove to Shirakawa-go which is a small UNESCO-listed site. Yoshi showed us pictures of the area in winter – it looks like the scene from a Christmas card.
I’d been looking forward to Kyoto the most and it didn’t disappoint. On our first day we had a rickshaw through a bamboo forest, a Sushi making class which was hilarious (but with delicious results), visited Kinkakuji (the golden pavilion) and Sanjusangendo (the longest wooden temple in Japan, home to 1001 statues of Kannon).
When we arrived in Hiroshima we went straight to the ferry to Miyajima Island. This is where the “floating” o-torii Gate of the Itsukushima Shrine is and both the shrine and gate are built over water and appear to float. Back in Hiroshima we went to see the Atomic Bomb Dome, the Cenotaph and the Museum. Seeing pictures of before and after the bombing was quite evocative.
Overall we had a great time, enhanced by the people in our group and our wonderful Holiday Director, Simona and Local Guide, Yoshi. These two were the perfect hosts for our trip - we were looked after from start to finish. It was a fast paced tour and it was only when we returned that we really appreciated how much we had seen and done. Japan is a country full of surprises and just waiting to take your breath away.

The great Wall of China The story behind
ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS EVER UNDERTAKEN.
2,000 YEARS IN THE MAKING
The Great Wall of China was the idea of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, who wanted to protect the Chinese Empire from invasion. In around 220BC, he ordered that several separate walls be joined together and a huge army was commandeered to carry out his instructions. The Wall was continually extended and reinforced, using stone, brick, and earth. The construction was completed in the 17th century and so involved various dynasties, including the Qin, Han, and Ming and was. However, in recent years, it’s been reported that nearly a third of the Wall has vanished, a reminder of its long, storied history and the forces of time.
While estimates of the Great Wall’s length have ranged from 1,500 to 5,000 miles, a 2012 archaeological survey by China’s State Administration of Cultural Heritage revealed it to be much longer – an astonishing 13,000 miles (21,000 km). This immense span only adds to the wonder of this iconic marvel of human engineering.
IT
CAN’T BE SEEN FROM SPACE
Contrary to popular belief, the Great Wall can’t be seen from space - especially not with the naked eye. Over the years, plenty of astronauts - including China’s Yang Liwei - have looked, but failed to spot it.
VISITING THE GREAT WALL
Travelsphere customers visit a slightly less well-known part of the wall, which has been well restored. Here you can explore at your own pace, take a stroll along its ramparts and admire the spectacular views as the wall stretches endlessly across the horizon
OUR FIRST TOUR TO CHINA WAS IN 1987
In 2017 we celebrated our 30th year of taking customers to China. It all began when China was a deeply Communist country. Even the simplest things like organising an airport transfer and booking a hotel required considerable negotiation back then, but our passion and commitment saw us through. In 1993 we received a prestigious award from the Vice Premier of China and we’ve even hosted a banquet for Travelsphere customers at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
A TASTE OF INDIA
Wherever in India you choose to travel, you’re in for a feast of culinary delights. Packed full of flavour and variety, Indian cuisine is amongst the best in the world. Using fresh, local ingredients and aromatic spices, dishes vary from region to region. In the north you’ll sample meat and vegetables simmered in tomato, onion and yoghurt-based sauces, while in the south, dishes laced with coconut and chilli are sure to tantalise your taste buds.
CAMBODIA’S CULINARY SECRETS
In just about every town and city in the UK you’ll find a great choice of Thai and Vietnamese restaurants. But what about their near neighbour, Cambodia? Maybe the reason for this is that Cambodian culinary secrets are rarely written down, instead they are passed from one family member to the next for generations.
Cambodian cuisine is influenced by its Asian neighbours as well as strong French legacy. Both rice and freshwater fish are two staple ingredients. Other typical foods includes noodles, soup, lots of vegetables and tropical fruits – with sweet, sour, salty and bitter flavours all featuring. We’d recommend trying fish amok, considered one of Cambodia’s national dishes. It’s a curry blended with creamy coconut, lemon grass and kaffir lime leaves, cooked in banana leaves.
ICONIC DISHES OF JAPAN
Get your chopsticks at the ready and enjoy a culinary adventure in Japan. Must-try dishes include the noodle soup ramen - a dish that has garnered international popularity and evolved into an experience to be savoured. Okonomiyaki, which is batter and cabbage cooked on a griddle and topped with anything from meat and seafood to wasabi and cheese. Of course sushi is high on the list too, and as well as eating this exquisitely presented delicacy, you can have a go at making it yourself on our Japan – Land of the Rising Sun tour.
JOURNEY THROUGH UZBEK CUISINE
Uzbek cuisine is a delightful fusion of flavours, reflecting the country’s rich history along the Silk Road. Its heart lies plov, a fragrant rice dish often cooked with tender lamb, carrots, and spices, making it a beloved national staple. Dumplings like manti, filled with savoury meat, and samosas, crispy pastries showcase the culinary diversity. Freshly baked bread, or non, is a daily essential. Often round and slightly leavened and baked in clay tandoors. Savour the enticing aromas of non and plov as you enjoy a home-cooked meal with a local family.

EVERYONE’S CUP OF TEA
Our favourite drink is inexpensive to buy and easy to make, getting through a grand total of 165 million cups a day. But we’re not the only ones who love a cup of tea… In China tea is cultivated in 18 of its 24 provinces and this vast country produces the greatest variety of tea, too. Green, black, oolong, white, yellow and pu-erh to name but a few. Another country that takes its tea seriously is Japan, and it’s here that the famous tea ceremony was born. Sri Lanka is home of the famous Ceylon tea, see how the leaves are delicately picked by hand and turned into a favourite brew on a visit to a plantation.
