A Letter from Glen Chown

Dear Friends,

The coming year promises to be nothing short of extraordinary, and a particular project has us all very excited—the Perch Lake Addition to Upper Manistee Headwaters: The Milock Family Preserve.

Already one of our most ecologically significant properties, the proposed addition would expand the preserve's footprint to nearly 1,700 acres encompassing ten distinct wetland types and the entirety of two pristine lakes, Grass Lake and Perch Lake. Nestled in the uppermost section of the vast Manistee River watershed, this project is a testament to our commitment to safeguarding the rich biodiversity of our region and premier watersheds such as the Manistee.

In the pipeline are numerous additional projects awaiting board approval, each with its own promise of contributing to our conservation efforts in northern Michigan. Stay tuned for exciting updates on these projects throughout the year.

The momentum and necessity of our work shows no signs of slowing. I am immensely proud of the tireless efforts put forth by the Conservancy’s staff, board of directors, and the incredible cadre of volunteers who join hands with us in the pursuit of our shared goal—protecting significant natural, scenic, and farm lands—and advancing stewardship—now and for future generations.

Take a look at the map on page 6 to see how important land protection in Kalkaska County is to the rest of our service region and to the Great Lakes. I hope you will join us this summer visiting the property and supporting its permanent protection. Keep an eye on the calendar of events on our website for opportunities to join us on the land.

As we reflect on our achievements and acknowledge the invaluable financial support we receive from our dedicated community of donors, our hearts fill with gratitude. Nothing we do would be possible without this support. Please take a look at our annual report and the long list of people who are making this important work possible beginning on page 32.

2 SPRING ‘24 | VOL 79

The stories you will read in this issue of Landscript recap an incredible year, and I hope they inspire you to continue this journey of conservation with us as we strive toward a sustainable and vibrant future for our beloved region. Your involvement, advice, friendship, and commitment are the driving forces behind our success, and we are grateful for each step taken together.

With gratitude,

PROPOSED ADDITION TO ENHANCE ECOLOGICAL FEATURES OF UPPER MANISTEE HEADWATERS: THE MILOCK FAMILY PRESERVE

For the late advertising executive, Howard Paxson, a remote lakefront property in Excelsior Township was an escape from the busy world—a sanctuary where he could connect with nature and spend time with family and friends.

“It was a healing place,” said Paxson’s daughter, Helen Barker, reminiscing about the property she had visited since early childhood. “My daddy always called it God’s country—there’s no outside world there.”

Paxson had purchased the property’s original 242 acres in 1944 and, over time, acquired adjoining parcels to

create a 342-acre block of land. Committed to keeping the property intact, he placed it into a trust before his passing, with stringent restrictions to safeguard it from being divided.

Howard’s dream of permanently preserving the property could soon be realized as the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) works to protect the land as an addition to Upper Manistee Headwaters: The Milock Family Preserve. The proposed addition would grow one of GTRLC’s largest nature preserves— and one of its most ecologically significant—to an expansive 1,700 acres.

4 SPRING ‘24 | VOL 79

“From early on, this property has been a priority for protection,” said Chris Sullivan, GTRLC’s director of land protection. “We hoped it would become part of the preserve.”

The property, which shares more than a half-mile boundary with the existing preserve, encompasses the entirety of picturesque Perch Lake and boasts a diverse ecosystem featuring mesic northern hardwood forest, early successional forest, a well-managed pine plantation and various ecologically rich wetlands.

Howard Paxson’s commitment to preserving the property’s natural features has been the guiding principle behind its protection. “He always insisted that we take care of nature,” Helen stated. She reflected on how her father had restricted motorized vehicles

and dogs on the property, as they could scare wildlife, and how as a family, they had lovingly planted pine tree seedlings by hand in a circle and named them the “Cathedral of the Pines.”

Around the time the Conservancy publicly launched the Campaign for Generations, featuring the Upper Manistee Headwaters as a centerpiece project, Helen and her husband Ross, along with their family, decided to sell their property on Perch Lake. “I was already convinced that the Conservancy was the ideal recipient; there

was none other we could imagine who would treat the property like Howard wanted it treated,” Ross explained.

Thanks to a generous loan from Richard and Diana Milock, GTRLC was recently able to hold the property following several years of negotiations. The Conservancy must raise $1.3 million by July 2026, to pay off the loan, fund immediate, on-the-ground needs and cover longterm stewardship costs.

“We are incredibly grateful for this conservation loan, which has given us time to raise the money we need to

fund this property’s purchase,” said Executive Director Glen Chown.

The fundraising campaign received a major boost from the Morrissey family, who generously offered a $200,000 dollar-for-dollar matching challenge grant— a move that has spurred multiple gifts for the land’s protection, including a leading gift from longtime supporter John Frey.

“There has never been a better time, going forward, to invest in land and habitat protection of the last

available larger parcels. The lakes where we can experience a walk with just forest, wildlife and people are diminishing. Even more important are the contiguous wildlife corridors linking these parcels,” said Marla Morrissey, who fell in love with the preserve and has significantly contributed to its protection, hoping others will do the same.

“It no longer made sense to keep available funds when they could work to preserve such a lovely place as Perch Lake,” she added. “These matching funds will help to protect and maintain this preserve long past when we are no longer here. I really can’t think of a better way to spend my money than to buy something priceless.”

It’s hard to overstate the ecological significance of the Upper Manistee Headwaters Preserve, which features over a mile of frontage on the Manistee River’s north branch, several kettle-hole ponds and a spring-fed lake that’s nearly void of invasive species. Most remarkably, the preserve contains ten distinct types of wetlands that support a wide variety of wildlife. More than 365 plant species, most of which are native to Michigan, and dozens of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish call this special place home.

Protection of the Perch Lake property, already significant in its own right, adds to the conservation value of this ecological treasure. The property safeguards an additional 7,600 feet of water frontage on Perch Lake and is hydrologically connected to the north branch of the Manistee River through groundwater.

“Collectively, these properties, which have largely been kept in their natural state, are working to safeguard water quality within the river, its surrounding watershed, and by extension, the Great Lakes Basin,” explained GTRLC’s director of stewardship, Chris Garrock. One of the largest watersheds in Michigan, the Manistee drains nearly 1,800 square miles from its headwaters near the preserve through 12 counties, before ultimately reaching Lake Michigan.

“Protecting this parcel from future development not only conserves its significant natural features but also provides a wide buffer of important habitat for hundreds of plant and animal species,” said Garrock.

While the Conservancy plans to conduct future inventories of the property’s flora and fauna, a preliminary assessment identified several botanical

species with high conservation value, including pitcher plant, beech-drops and bog rosemary. The assessment also found evidence of diverse wildlife, such as Pileated Woodpecker, Common Loon, Redshouldered Hawk, Bald Eagle and black bear, as well as a host of amphibian species.

Ron Goodale, a close friend of Howard Paxson, has lived near the property since the 1970s. He frequently helped clear trails, prepare the property for visitors, and has fond memories of hunting, campfires and cookouts with the Paxson family. He said, “Howard was like a second father to me. That property is a big part of my family.”

Initially, Goodale believed that the property would become part of Camp Tapico, the former Boy Scout camp that is now the Upper Manistee Headwaters Preserve. When the camp closed in 2016, he worried about the property’s future, but was relieved to learn it would be protected within the preserve.

“I am grateful that it’s going to the Conservancy because that was Howard’s wish,” Goodale said. “That was

number one on his list, to preserve the property. He just wanted to leave it in its natural state.”

GTRLC is in the early stages of developing a management plan for the property but expects to expand the existing trail system while safeguarding the land’s sensitive natural features. The proposed addition will also facilitate access to the remote and rugged northwest portion of the preserve, making it easier for staff, volunteers and researchers to conduct botanical surveys and other stewardship activities in this area. Until the property is protected, public access is restricted to GTRLC-led hikes and appointments by request. More information about these hikes can be found at GTRLC.ORG.

Project Roundup

For over three decades, your continued support has been instrumental in preserving our region’s significant landscapes, fresh waters and sensitive habitats. Thanks to you, we have protected 47,375 acres of land (and counting) across our service area. This includes 155 miles of breathtaking shoreline along our rivers, lakes and streams, and 126 miles of trails that offer unparalleled outdoor experiences for our community.

We remain dedicated to protecting critical new parcels and maintaining those we’ve preserved. Read on for updates on several ongoing projects, each made possible with your support, and be sure to check out our detailed project map on page 12. In addition to those mentioned, there are several exciting, high-priority projects on the horizon that we’re not quite ready to include here but look forward to sharing with you soon. Stay tuned!

Turtle Cove Nature Preserve

We are thrilled to share that this stunning nature preserve (pictured above) is officially open to the public!

The nearly 120-acre property protects the majority of a shallow-water bay that teems with life, offering habitat for scores of fish, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. With over three-quarters of a mile of untouched shoreline between its namesake cove and the main body of Arbutus Lake, the preserve plays a vital role in preserving water quality in the lake and within the Boardman/Ottaway River watershed.

While accessing the lake is discouraged, this ecological gem is a real treat to explore on foot. The delightful 1.7-mile Beverly & Spencer Silk Nature Trail loops through various habitats, including mesic northern forest, dry-mesic northern forest, steep lake bluff, a riparian area along the lake, mature white pine stands, dry sand prairie and leatherleaf bog.

We are grateful for the support of so many generous donors who helped make this project possible. Visit our website for more information, including a trail map and directions.

Betsie Dunes Nature Sanctuary

The Conservancy continues actively fundraising to protect a crucial addition to the Betsie Dunes Nature Sanctuary.

Situated between Lake Michigan and Crystal Lake, this sanctuary is part of the largest freshwater dune system in the world. It is home to several species endemic to the Great Lakes region, including pitcher’s thistle, a federally and state-listed plant highly sensitive to disturbance. The sanctuary also protects a significant migration corridor for numerous bird species, including warblers and other migratory birds, which use the forested habitat along the lakeshore for food, shelter and nesting.

This 2.5-acre proposed addition is an inholding surrounded by the existing sanctuary on three sides, with Lake Michigan to its west. It features 100 feet of undeveloped Lake Michigan frontage and contains important habitats like mesic northern forest, open dunes and a globally rare wooded dune and swale complex, which is only found along the Great Lakes.

Without the protection of this property, the sanctuary's fragile ecosystem faces the risk of fragmentation, especially given its location in a highly desirable area. Incorporating this land into the sanctuary will preserve this critical dune community and enhance the permanent protection of this extraordinary place.

Golden Days Loon Nature Sanctuary Addition

While significant progress has been made thanks to many generous donors, GTRLC remains hard at work to raise funds to protect this exquisite 28-acre property on Lake Bellaire.

The proposed addition to the Golden Days Loon Nature Sanctuary encompasses over 13 acres of undeveloped wetlands and 650 feet of shoreline, playing an important role in filtering runoff and safeguarding water quality in Lake Bellaire. Moreover, the property provides crucial habitat for waterfowl species and serves as critical nesting grounds for the Common Loon. This species, which is highly sensitive to disturbance, once nearly abandoned the lake due to the intrusion of docks, boat traffic and other development. Thanks to previous conservation efforts, the lake’s secluded north arm is now home to four pairs of nesting loons.

Once protected, the property will connect the sanctuary to a large swath of protected private land, creating a contiguous 350-acre haven of high-quality habitat, including nearly 1.75 miles of undisturbed shoreline. When combined with nearby lands, the protected area on Lake Bellaire’s north arm alone will span nearly 200 acres with two miles of shoreline. And managed as a sanctuary, this property and the species it supports will be left wild and disturbed forever.

Brown Bridge Quiet Area –Spring Lake Addition

FANTASTIC news! In December, the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund board approved a $2,352,200 grant request, completing a vital step to expand Traverse City’s Brown Bridge Quiet Area by 528 acres.

The grant’s required local matching dollars were also secured when voters in Traverse City overwhelmingly approved the use of up to $746,245 from the Brown Bridge Trust Fund, which was established using proceeds from oil discovered on the property.

The proposed addition comprises two adjacent parcels; a 300-acre forested lot and a 228-acre property encompassing nearly all of beautiful Spring Lake. Together, these properties will establish an extensive, more than 1,800-acre contiguous block of critical habitat while safeguarding water quality in the Boardman/ Ottaway River watershed and preserving the area’s scenic beauty. As an addition to a beloved Traverse City park, the project will also enhance opportunities for passive recreation.

While community support has been instrumental in the success of this project to date, the Conservancy is still raising funds needed to cover the remaining costs associated with the project, the gap for which GTRLC is responsible.

Pelizzari Natural Area Addition

Thanks to many generous donors, fundraising has made significant headway for the protection of a 15-acre property that could expand the Pelizzari Natural Area.

The property features beautiful northern hardwood forests with rolling topography and mature trees, providing an ideal habitat for species like the statethreatened Red-shouldered Hawk and Northern Goshawk, a species of special concern. Located near the Peninsula Township park, this property's protection could serve as a crucial catalyst for future conservation efforts. If adjacent parcels are also preserved, Pelizzari's existing trail network could extend across them, potentially doubling its size. This expansion would not only protect critical habitats but also offer more recreational opportunities in an area facing significant development pressure.

Supporting the Future of Farming

GTRLC JOINS NEW PROGRAM TO CATALYZE EQUITABLE TRANSFER OF AGRICULTURAL LAND

Many farmers face significant challenges when it comes to transferring farmland to the next generation; high labor costs, difficult market conditions and retirements tied up in valuable land assets have created obstacles throughout the industry. In addition, finding successors can be even more daunting when multiple family members—or none at all—express interest in taking over the farm.

“With many of the traditional types of crops grown in northern Michigan, it’s hard to find people to step in,” explained Laura Rigan, farmland program manager with the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC). Recognizing the impending wave of land transfer posed by the aging demographic of farmers,

with a median age of 56.8 years, she added, “this will impact regional food systems, local economies and climate change solutions, which all depend on the next generation’s ability to access and steward land well.”

To address these challenges, GTRLC applied for and was recently accepted into the Land Transfer Navigator Program, a new initiative developed by the American Farmland Trust (AFT) with support from the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service. The program aims to dramatically increase the transfer of farm and ranch land nationwide by empowering the next generation of farmers and facilitating the transfer of agricultural land.

16 SPRING ‘24 | VOL 79

Over the next four years, AFT will provide GTRLC and other participating organizations with training, technical assistance and financial support, enabling them to serve as “Land Transfer Navigators.” The initiative also seeks to establish an online resource hub and FarmLink Finder to foster connections between aspiring farmers and available land.

“Land protected with an agricultural conservation easement is typically more affordable than unprotected land, making it especially appealing to beginning farmers and ranchers,” said Rigan, emphasizing GTRLC’s unique role as a land trust in the succession process. She added that funds paid to landowners to protect their land are often invested in crucial aspects of the farm business, including retirement planning. And because GTRLC stewards conservation easements in perpetuity, the organization has cultivated long-term relationships with landowners that have proven to be instrumental when it is time to transfer protected lands and support new farmers in accessing them.

Through the program, Rigan anticipates the Conservancy gaining a comprehensive view of current protected farmland across its service area, which she hopes will help connect new farmers with available land. “We will know if there is active agriculture on a property, how many acres, and what the landowner’s goals are. Having this baseline knowledge will help us when new farmers reach out to us looking for land,” she said.

The program provides a range of valuable skills that can be adapted to meet the unique goals and missions of

each organization. Participants will have the chance to learn from their peers, and while Rigan serves as the point of contact for the program’s launch, the training sessions will be available to multiple staff members.

As a navigator organization, GTRLC will identify and develop regional networks to host landowner workshops, serving as a hub for bringing together valuable resources. With the guidance of a lawyer or estate planner, the workshops could cover succession planning, legal aspects and technical training designed to address the unique challenges farmers face in northern Michigan.

“Most of the farms that make up northern Michigan’s landscape are family farms that are loved, cared for and central to their community’s identity,” Rigan said, noting that many of these farms also contain multiple conservation values, including scenic views, water quality protection and wildlife habitat. Looking forward, she envisions the program will equip land trusts with the necessary tools and networks to facilitate successful land transfers, and hopefully, mitigate the loss of agricultural land.

The Land Transfer Navigator Program officially launched in January 2024, with initial activities featuring an in-person training session followed by virtual engagements throughout the year. Individuals or organizations interested in staying informed about the program can reach out to GTRLC’s farmland program manager at info@gtrlc.org or (231) 929.7911.

A Legacy of Leadership

MULTI-GENERATIONAL FAMILY IMPACTS FUTURE OF LAND PROTECTION AND STEWARDSHIP

In the summer of 2018, the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) publicly unveiled the Campaign for Generations during its annual Preservation Celebration. Against the backdrop of the Traverse City Opera House, emotions stirred as the crowd watched a compelling video and listened to impassioned speeches, setting the stage for the campaign’s final phase.

Among those in the audience was Dr. Patricia Zigarmi, renowned for her distinguished career as a founding associate and senior partner for consulting group Blanchard, along with success as a motivational speaker, management consultant and co-author of best-selling works including Leadership and the One-Minute Manager.

18 SPRING ‘24 | VOL 79
Pat Zigarmi and her granddaughter, Evelyn Talbot. PHOTO COURTESY OF PAT ZIGARMI

While relatively new to GTRLC at the time, Zigarmi had previously contributed to initiatives at the Wintergreen Woods Nature Preserve and Maple Bay Farm near her family’s cottage in Yuba. Inspired by the program, that evening she decided to spontaneously make a five-year gift to the Campaign, underpinning her commitment to preserving the land that has meant most to her.

Reflecting on that moment, she said, “I grew up for so many years seeing the cherry farms and the undeveloped space. I thought, ‘I’m going to keep ‘up north’ the way I’ve known it for 70-plus years.’”

While she now lives near San Diego, Zigarmi has long felt connected to northern Michigan. Raised in East Grand Rapids, she has been visiting the area since she was five and has fond memories of swimming, sailing and sunbathing along East Bay.

Today, she continues to frequent the cottage her parents built sixty-some years ago, along with her children and grandchildren. From routine walks at the Maple Bay Natural Area to sailing East Bay’s shoreline, the water and nearby trails have enhanced her quality of life and allowed her to stay immersed in nature.

“The Conservancy is an organization that supports what I think is important to do up here," she said. Although she lives in California, Zigarmi feels compelled to support conservation efforts in her home state. Citing the disparities in legislation for environmental protection between the two regions, she said, “I feel like I have more of a chance to influence my immediate environment in Michigan.”

Initially introduced to the Conservancy’s work through Rick Bellingham, a friend who helped facilitate the organization’s strategic planning, Zigarmi was impressed by the clarity of values, initiatives, actions and outcomes within GTRLC’s strategic direction. “The way you do strategy is exemplary in my mind. That's what makes me confident in how my resources are being used,” she said, adding she has used the document as an example while coaching nonprofits on the West Coast.

Zigarmi’s commitment to GTRLC’s mission deepened after visiting the facilities at Mitchell Creek Meadows: The Don and Jerry Oleson Nature Preserve. Expressing hope for the future of conservation, she said, “I thought Mitchell Creek was astounding. The building itself is a statement—having a central location in town is a

statement. I just thought it was such the next step in the development of the Conservancy.”

This heightened dedication led Zigarmi to connect her 10-year-old granddaughter, Evelyn Talbot, with the Conservancy’s work. Like her grandmother, Evelyn has developed a keen interest in protecting the environment, beginning when she learned about endangered animal species in school. She was shocked to discover that some species, like the polar bear, could face extinction during her lifetime. Taking matters into her own hands, she created a protest sign against the plight of endangered species and held it outside.

Since then, Evelyn has been living and breathing her commitment to protecting the environment. She has organized climate marches, collected donations for the World Wildlife Fund instead of traditional birthday gifts, and convinced her parents to read Nature’s Best Hope. Her dedication extends to picking up trash during recess and adopting a vegetarian diet.

To help guide her granddaughter’s passion toward a tangible cause, Zigarmi suggested Evelyn start a can collection and donate the proceeds to the GTRLC. “She knew Maple Bay, so I told her, ‘these are the people who did that,’” she recalled. “The Conservancy supports what’s in her heart and what’s in mine, too.”

Rallying her circle around her cause, Evelyn (with help from her parents, Alexa and Ryan) raised $400 to support land protection and stewardship, with both grandmothers, friends and a neighbor contributing to the effort.

When the family stopped by the McMullen Family Conservation Center to deliver their gift, several staff members were touched by her endearing passion, including Executive Director Glen Chown, who said, “To meet someone so young, who has such a generous spirit and who is so committed to protecting our resources— it gives me gives me tremendous hope for the future.”

Zigarmi commended Chown for warmly acknowledging her grandchild, endorsing her passion and encouraging her to volunteer. “He made a difference in her life,” she said.

As a leader, she also praised Chown for his ability to evolve and sustain the organization’s values, creating a culture that fosters openness and innovation.

GTRLC.ORG 19

“I have a great deal of appreciation and gratitude for his leadership,” she said, highlighting his strategic acumen in hiring a team that is aligned. “I think the good people of the organization reflect the skill of the leader in creating a culture that is open, innovative, curious and focused, and I see him having provided that leadership over a number of years.”

While contemplating her own legacy in conservation, Zigarmi finds inspiration in her granddaughter. “She's just sort of this bellwether for me as to where we should be paying attention and making investments,” she explained. “I’d like to be her confidante in this, her partner in this, so she evolves her interests. That's a goal of mine.”

As for Evelyn, she envisions a future in ecology and activism, aspiring to become a naturalist. “The world needs a fresh set of eyes to see what the problem is,” she explained. "It's my dream to make a difference.”

From Inspiration to Impact

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES HELP SHAPE FUTURE LAND STEWARDS

Jake Umbarger, a film student at Interlochen Center for the Arts, finds inspiration in the natural world. “No matter what you do with art, there’s always some natural aspect to it,” he said. “I think somehow that speaks to almost everything we do.”

Jake was among a group of Interlochen students who recently toured the McMullen Family Conservation Center and gained first-hand insights about land conservation, watershed restoration, native plants, invasive species and the many sustainable design elements incorporated throughout the property.

“We had already been learning about the importance of watersheds,” Jake explained. “But when you get out there, you’re seeing it with your own eyes. You’re looking at the greater scale and saying, what all are we protecting within this watershed?”

Jake’s mother, Emily Umbarger, is Interlochen’s sustainability director and instructor of agricultural sciences. Emphasizing the transformative power of place-based learning, she hoped the experience would help instill a love for nature in her students.

GTRLC.ORG 21
Interlochen students (including Jake Umbarger, pictured above in the grey sweatshirt) learn about native plants from GTRLC's senior conservation ecologist, Angie Bouma, in the botany lab.

“Artists have a way of sending a message that can be hard to hear,” Emily said, explaining that the program’s goals extend beyond Interlochen’s campus. “When you see it in a film, when you hear it in a piece of music, when you read it in a piece of poetry, or you see it as a theatrical piece…they’re sharing a message that's so important, that's really accessible to people and speaks to their hearts.”

While the Conservancy is still gauging the potential of similar events, promoting conservation leadership in young adults is a top priority. “We collaborate with organizations that help educate and inform our communities about issues like habitat connectivity and water quality,” said Engagement Specialist Constanza Hazelwood. "Partnerships with organizations like AmeriCorps and multiple volunteer opportunities help us introduce young adults to career pathways in conservation."

These goals were reinforced in a recent alumni gathering hosted by the Huron Pines AmeriCorps program, a service that offers professional development opportunities through volunteer service with conservation organizations. Held at the McMullen Family Conservation Center, the event featured a panel discussion, where alumni shared insight on careers in conservation with the program’s current cohort.

Among them were Parker Maynard, a graduate student studying ecology at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, and Kyler Moran, preserve stewardship manager for the Legacy Land Conservancy, who had both served with GTRLC. Appreciative of the opportunity to develop his interests and skills during his service, Moran stated, “I have made creating those same opportunities for our Huron Pines AmeriCorps members a focus of our preserve management program.”

Also included on the panel were GTRLC staff members, Director of Stewardship Chris Garrock, and Volunteer Coordinator Erica DesJardins. Reflecting on his trajectory from AmeriCorps to working in several capacities with GTRLC, to eventually earning his current position, Garrock said, “The Conservancy taught me the value of relationships. If I could have told myself the work I’d be doing now is connecting with people, I wouldn’t have believed it. But it’s really rewarding and that’s the reality.”

“These incredible young people give me so much hope. Witnessing the ripple effects of their efforts throughout our communities, I’m reminded how important it is to invest in our future leaders,” Chown said. "Our lands, waters and wildlife depend on them."

He also emphasized the value of tenacity while pursuing a career in conservation. “It’s tough. In school, they prepare you to move,” he explained. “These aren’t moneymaking jobs—they’re passion-oriented, so it’s hard to get in and you have to have that resilience.”

Both agreed volunteering is a pathway to getting started. “Volunteering is a great first step as a way to explore what interests you,” said DesJardins. “I wanted to get my foot in the door, but I just fell in love with it. It ended up being a great fit.”

GTRLC’s staff includes a growing contingent of former interns, AmeriCorps members and seasonal employees, including director of development, Marissa Duque; farm operations and sustainability coordinator, Sam Griffin; land protection specialist, Charlie MacDonald; farmland program manager, Laura Rigan; and land stewardship specialist, Cody Selewski.

These individuals are among an impressive cadre of passionate young professionals who launched their careers with GTRLC and are making a meaningful impact in their respective communities.

Lauren Silver, who started her career as an intern with GTRLC, is now the executive director of the Snoqualmie Valley Preservation Alliance, a nonprofit organization that works to protect and improve the lives, livelihoods, lands and waters of the beautiful Snoqualmie River Valley in Washington State.

Former Huron Pines AmeriCorps member, Audrey Menninga, developed a love for the area while managing

invasive species with GTRLC. Today, she leads invasive species control efforts across the region with the Northwest Michigan Invasive Species Network, including managing the transition of the Grand Traverse Conservation District's program into a nonprofit. Describing her role, she said, “It’s a lot more bookwork and management than working in the field is, but we are constantly expanding our programs and it’s been an exciting ride!”

Jon Throop, GTRLC’s former volunteer program manager, initially volunteered with the Conservancy before joining the stewardship team. Today, he serves as the executive director for the Benzie Conservation District. “I'm most proud of the way the Benzie Conservation District works hand-in-hand with the community to address our shared conservation priorities,” Throop said.

Also in Benzie County is Samantha Wolfe, who was working on GTRLC’s rotational grazing cattle operation at Misty Acres when she received several emails about an injured seagull. “That was the light bulb moment when I realized I had some of the necessary knowledge and many of the skills to start a wildlife rehabilitation facility in our area,” she said. Recognizing an increasing need for support for injured and orphaned wildlife, Wolfe launched the Sleeping Bear Wildlife Fund. As the organization’s executive director, she has helped over 120 animals, in addition to fulfilling her position as an agricultural and occupational health educator for MSU Extension.

For GTRLC’s Executive Director Glen Chown, these individuals hold immense promise for the future of conservation. “These incredible young people give me so much hope. Witnessing the ripple effects of their efforts throughout our communities, I’m reminded how important it is to invest in our future leaders,” he said. "Our lands, waters and wildlife depend on them."

Making Connections

GTRLC’S ENGAGEMENT SPECIALIST INTRODUCES A FRESH APPROACH TO INSPIRING STEWARDSHIP

Over the past three decades, the Conservancy has led guided hikes, workshops and educational activities to connect with the community, providing information about critical issues affecting the region and our efforts to address them. Encouraging individuals to experience and steward our nature preserves has been a key focus of activities like building trails, removing invasive species and planting trees.

With the opening of the McMullen Family Conservation Center and other facilities at Mitchell Creek Meadows:

The Don and Jerry Oleson Nature Preserve, GTRLC aims to deepen engagement by expanding on these activities, fostering a regional hub of information-sharing and action to benefit the area’s ecological health.

GTRLC’s engagement specialist, Constanza Hazelwood, uses her background in science education and curriculum design to connect people with the Conservancy’s mission while inspiring a culture of stewardship. In a conversation, she shared insight into her role and the engagement program.

Q: Can you tell us about GTRLC’s engagement program and its goals?

A: Our program aims to inspire action and stewardship through meaningful learning experiences that deepen connections to the lands we protect. By leveraging our facilities and this organization’s wealth of knowledge, we want to engage diverse audiences, foster collaboration among our community partners and promote environmental education embedded in action.

Q: How do you approach engagement?

A: I call it the “three Ps”—a place-based, problem-based and project-based approach. GTRLC is in an ideal position to implement an engagement strategy rooted in the places we protect, the problems we face and the projects we design to address these challenges. How do we attract people to be involved in significant learning experiences to enrich and change their lives? How do we leverage the GTRLC landscapes, farmlands and opportunities to inspire and generate action to protect our watersheds? These are the enduring questions that motivate my work.

Q: How does this work differ from GTRLC’s traditional volunteer opportunities and events?

A: The impactful work of our volunteers, like removing invasive species or helping in our native plant greenhouse, will continue to expand throughout our service area. The engagement program will create exciting opportunities for people to connect with our work in new ways. For the first time, we have a centralized space where we can host meetings, events and other opportunities that invite the broader community to learn about issues affecting

our lands and waters. An important part of this program is to also invite our network of partner organizations to advance their missions in ways that align with and advance ours.

Q: What are some examples of engagement activities at GTRLC?

A: In the past twelve months we have hosted nearly three dozen different activities in the Debra Edson Family Learning Gallery (pictured below), including strategic meetings and workshops with partner organizations, training sessions for our board and staff, celebrations honoring our generous donors and volunteers and educational tours.

We also offer engagement opportunities outside this facility. For instance, upcoming hikes feature themes designed to deepen that connection to the land. We are also developing our institutional capacity with a group of ambassadors, who will become our “eyes and ears” and represent GTRLC in the community.

Q: How can people get involved in the Conservancy’s engagement initiatives?

A: We have established a process to submit requests and propose opportunities for engaging with us. Requests are reviewed quarterly to assess eligibility, considering factors such as alignment with our mission, meeting our capacity requirements and targeted audiences. If you would like to submit a request, please visit our website at gtrlc.org/contact-us/. Another great way to get involved is through attending one of our upcoming public engagement opportunities, which are updated on our website’s event calendar as they’re scheduled at gtrlc.org/recreation-events/events/.

Spring Has Sprung!

GTRLC’S NATIVE PLANT GREENHOUSE GEARS UP FOR 2024 SEASON

It’s a beautiful and busy time of year in GTRLC’s native plant greenhouse. Thanks to the hard work of the Conservancy’s volunteers and staff, 25 species of open meadow native wildflowers and grass seedlings have sprouted, pots and trays have been prepped, and the second year of the greenhouse is well underway!

Led by Rick Hager, volunteers collected an impressive three pounds of native wildflower and grass seeds from protected lands like Mitchell Creek Meadows: The Don and Jerry Oleson Nature Preserve last year, including goldenrod, little bluestem, common milkweed and blue vervain. These seeds, along with others purchased using grant funding, were started in the greenhouse over the winter and transplanted into larger “cone-tainers” in March. The effort yielded over 8,000 plugs, with the potential for more if additional restoration is necessary.

Depending on conditions, the Conservancy plans to plant the seedlings at various protected properties, such as Arcadia Marsh, Misty Acres: The Borwell Preserve, the Mitchell Creek Meadows Preserve, the Maplehurst Natural Area and Upper Manistee Headwaters: The Milock Family Preserve. Workdays may begin as early as late April and will be announced soon.

This is all in addition to the Conservancy’s ongoing efforts to remove invasive species and plant trees. The tree plantings are planned for this spring and fall in collaboration with our friends at the Conservation Resource Alliance.

Interested volunteers are encouraged to attend GTRLC’s volunteer orientation at the McMullen Family Conservation Center on April 19 at 4 pm. For specific planting dates and further details, check GTRLC’s volunteer calendar at gtrlc.org/volunteer/calendar/.

Capturing Changes on the Land

NEW CHRONOLOG PHOTO STATIONS ENCOURAGE COMMUNITY SCIENCE

Two new “chronolog” stations have been installed at Mitchell Creek Meadows: The Don and Jerry Oleson Nature Preserve, to help monitor changes on the land.

Placed strategically in sites where active restoration is taking place, these stations invite trail users to engage in community science while hiking the Looyenga Family Trail.

To use the chronolog stations, visitors can simply place their cell phones in a bracket, snap a photo and email it to the chronolog website with the provided code. These images then become part of a time-lapse video sequence on the site showcasing the gradual transformation of the preserve. With instructions posted at each station, the process takes only about 30 seconds, making it accessible to everyone.

“This is a great way for folks to engage with our restoration work and it's a wonderful tool for tracking changes on the land, as well as site monitoring for grant reports,” said Chris Garrock, GTRLC’s director of stewardship. “It provides a wealth of information and is pretty simple to do.”

The first station, located near the main parking area at the McMullen Family Conservation Center, offers a view of a bioswale, a vegetated, low-lying channel designed to manage stormwater runoff. At this site, native wetland plants were carefully selected and planted to filter runoff before it seeps into the water table, demonstrating a more sustainable alternative to traditional stormwater management systems. As these native plants begin to flourish, the chronolog station will document their growth as well as how the bioswale is used by wildlife.

A second station overlooks an active restoration area on the eastern portion of the trail, where the Conservancy’s staff, along with volunteers and a small herd of goats, are diligently working to remove invasive plants like autumn olive. Native perennials, trees and shrubs are also being planted to restore the former golf course to its natural

state and to contribute to a larger, collaborative effort to restore the Mitchell Creek watershed.

“As we work more in these areas, we hope these stations will help us efficiently document our progress and track changes,” Garrock explained. “Ten years from now, we should have some amazing footage to share. Having that long-term monitoring component is really valuable.”

Beyond Mitchell Creek Meadows, other chronolog stations can be found at Maplehurst Natural Area, Maple Bay Farm and soon, at the Halladay-BlackhurstChowning Nature Preserve.

As a tool, chronolog provides valuable information that organizations can use to monitor and understand changes in the environment, helping researchers, conservationists and communities make informed decisions about land management and conservation efforts. More information, including a map of sites, is available here: chronolog.io.

Cultivating Curiosity

COLLEGE STUDENT NURTURES PASSION FOR SCIENTIFIC EXPLORATION AT GTRLC’S BOTANY LAB

Nestled in the Bob and Pauline Young Family Stewardship Workshop is a small laboratory dedicated to scientific exploration. Known simply as the “botany lab,” this space is quickly becoming a hub for gaining a deeper understanding of our region’s biodiversity and the plants that form the foundations of our ecosystems.

Inconspicuously tucked behind the Native Plant Greenhouse, the lab is equipped with an herbarium, plant presses, microscopes and more. It primarily serves as a research space for cataloging species and supporting the restoration of rare or declining plants. GTRLC’s Senior Conservation Ecologist Angie Bouma underscored the crucial role of this work, stating that plants are the baseline from which the Conservancy manages and

restores habitats. “This is because we can infer habitat types from abiotic (nonliving physical and chemical) factors and native plant inventories or, in some cases, the presence of a species of high conservation value,” she said. She also noted that with the help of community scientists, her team is gaining a more thorough inventory of plants and wildlife in GTRLC’s sanctuaries and nature preserves.

Since opening in 2023, the lab has been used for activities like native orchid restoration, creating native “seed balls” with volunteers, and cleaning, storing and preparing seeds for planting. It has also provided a dedicated workstation for visiting researchers, interns and volunteers, and collaborative stewardship projects.

Makalai Lasavath, a Kalamazoo College biology major, stands out as one of the first volunteers contributing to the botany lab’s development, with intellect and curiosity that indicate she will leave an enduring mark in her chosen field.

From a young age, Makalai’s pursuit of knowledge has extended beyond the classroom; she credits Science Olympiad, a co-curricular national STEM competition, for allowing her to explore subjects not typically offered in school, and the internet for providing access to knowledge from experts in the field.

28 SPRING ‘24 | VOL 79

“I grew up with not a single professional in my family. My dad finished college when I finished high school—so we were in it together,” she described. “The internet is an equalizer in that way.”

While studying abroad in college, Makalai interned at an aquaponics fish lab in Chiang Mai, Thailand, focusing on sustainability and technology in fisheries. She also completed an AmeriCorps internship in Iowa, where she provided academic support for elementary students who were behind in school.

More recently, Makalai's interest in ecology deepened after meeting her girlfriend, Sophie, and learning about her mother Kate Pearson’s work at GTRLC.

“At the time, I didn’t know people had careers in land conservation,” she explained. On her first visit to Traverse City, Kate gifted her a pair of high-quality binoculars and a spread of books and field notes detailing native flora and fauna.

“That’s what helped me build my confidence and skills even more. It was that extra step that I couldn’t take because of my social, financial and cultural capital,” she reflected. “It was a really big part of why I’m here now.”

Eventually, that stepping stone led to a three-week volunteer stint in the botany lab last December, where she played a pivotal role in setting the lab up for success.

Working with Bouma, Makalai transferred data from paper into GTRLC’s digital inventory system, specifically using moss and lichen samples. She also helped with pressing plants and organizing specimens for GTRLC’s herbarium, a cabinet donated by the University of Michigan used to house botanical collections. Proudly, Makalai mounted the first specimen to the herbarium.

“The main thing I was doing was making it easier to do this work more quickly,” she said. In the future, GTRLC will be able to apply similar processes for other data sets, including community science observations collected via iNaturalist and eBird.

Makalai explained the importance of documenting this data digitally, referencing samples collected from the Maple Bay Natural Area, Finch Creek Nature Sanctuary and Upper Manistee Headwaters: The Milock Family Preserve. Not only were the specimens collected by volunteer expert bryologists (who research moss and lichen), making them difficult to replicate, but they also included detailed information such as species

identification, coordinates, elevation and habitat descriptions.

"What's interesting is that their field notes don’t just mark the general habitat, but if it was on a specific type of tree, log or rock. They also explain the topography of the area," Makalai said, adding that since working with these samples, she has carefully avoided stepping on moss. “Even just, say, 100 samples from one place can have 30 or 40 different species.”

In addition to understanding the plant diversity within an area, this wealth of information is useful for determining the presence of threatened or endangered species. For GTRLC, this data is critical to guiding decisions on trail and infrastructure placements and assisting with grant applications.

“We can’t manage for something if we don’t know it’s there,” said Bouma. Emphasizing the importance of plant inventories in caring for our protected lands, she explained that a digital inventory system allows GTRLC’s stewardship staff to quickly search for a list of botanical species, including those sensitive to disturbance that require extra care.

Impressed with Makalai’s meticulous attention to detail, Bouma stated, "Makalai was terrific. She was thoughtful and patient with all the data we gave her—it really seemed to click with her." She also commended Makalai for introducing ways to organize data more efficiently and for her energy and enthusiasm. “That’s what I love about volunteers and interns—it reminds me of why it’s so exciting to be in the biology field.”

For Makalai, volunteering was more than just a project; it was a step toward her future goals. With interests in education, social justice and science, she hopes to help bridge the opportunity gap for students by sharing similar experiences, particularly for those in low-income school districts with limited access to nature. Reflecting on her experience with GTRLC, she said, "I hope wherever I end up, I will get students out in nature and working with conservancies so they have that hands-on experience.”

McMULLEN FAMILY CONSERVATION CENTER

January 1 – December 31, 2023

Thank you to the donors who made generous gifts to support the McMullen Family Conservation Center in 2023. The Conservation Center is becoming a demonstration site for innovative and efficient ways to conserve both water and energy in the Great Lakes Basin. In the heart of the Mitchell Creek watershed and surrounded by schools and neighborhoods, the Conservation Center is also a place where people can join together to build a more resilient, engaged and proactive community.

You can have an enduring imprint on nature!

Many people support the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy because they know the best way to ensure our region remains vibrant, healthy and beautiful is to protect the critical places we all love—forever.

Planning for a conservation legacy can further your financial goals and maximize your giving with a planned gift. Whatever phase of life you are in, planned giving can benefit you and those you love while protecting and enhancing the precious land and water of northern Michigan forever.

VOLUNTEERS

January 1 – December 31, 2023

Volunteers are leaders in the effort to protect and steward the important places that make this area unique. The work of GTRLC simply could not happen without these passionate advocates for our natural world. Volunteers lead hikes, demonstrate community science, tackle invasive species, build trails, steward preserves and assist in the office. We are deeply grateful for their dedication and hard work.
