Our Rector's Message - Continued from cover members. The light of hope spreads as we care for each other and reach out to those who are hungry. We are grateful that God sets a star over All Saints’ Church. During a time when the Episcopal Church and other mainline denominations are losing members, we grew seventeen percent in the past two years. Attendance at our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services was the highest since 2005. By God’s grace, the New Year will shine brightly as we welcome more people of all ages into our fellowship of love and Christian formation. I am eager to follow the star God is setting before us, even as I am made breathless by the boldness of God’s imagination and humbled by our need for God’s grace. I trust that you are also grateful, eager, and humbled, as together we follow the star, as did the saints who went before us. In Christ, Rick

• We give thanks for the time, talents, and treasures of every one who participated in our holiday services during December. Especially the musicians, choir, altar guild, ushers, acolytes, readers, dramatists, Eucharistic ministers, and hosts who all willingly gave of their time and helped make Christmas so special. • For all who made a donation for the Christmas flowers. • Susan Britton and more than twenty members who participated in the greening of the church. • Claudia Ward, Sheila Camacho, Diane DeBerry, Jennifer Evans, and other school families for helping with the St. Nicholas Celebration. • All who donated to the Christmas gifts and who assembled the Christmas food boxes. • For Jay Hunter, Sameera Sharif and Clint Bayly and their handiwork and service over the Christmas season. • For the office volunteers who welcomed and assisted our members and guests. • We thank the Rev. As we enter 2013 we will continue to refine our processes, improve our facilities and increase communication. Considering that until three years ago the church relied wholly on the monthly newsletter, bulletin boards and a few announcements for Sunday visitors - we've come a long way. In the last three years we have launched and redesigned the church website, we redesigned the Patter in February 2012 and added new features and order to improve communication. We created connections and followers on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and began to dabble on Youtube. We added email news that goes out to over 300 parishioners, as well as seasonal and event banners on the front of the church and increased our newspaper and chamber advertising. The feedback for the proposed change from a monthly newsletter to a periodic liturgically based magazine brought a good amount of praise and appreciation. One suggestion was that we also create a separate Sunday handout for announcements and events since many people seem to recycle their Sunday bulletins. All in all, this change would not reduce communication but enhance it by adding more theologically based articles to build your faith. As a staff we are targeting the first issue to come out in time for Easter. Much work is yet to be done in designing the publication, opinions are always welcome. Over the Christmas week Clint Bayly and member, Jay Hunter, removed the roots from the drain line in front of the office causing the puddle. Last month we began chilling the tulips for Easter, replanted the gardens on Lincoln, and finished the pathway on Dolores. In the first quarter we plan to replace the bench in the front of the church, replace the disintegrating retaining wall around the large oak tree next to the garden steps, finish repainting Grant Hall, and replace the youth room doors.

Limekiln Trails is in Big Sur, 2 miles south of Lucia (where the New Camaldoli Hermitage is) It is one hour drive south from Carmel. The trail has three branches each about 1/2 mile long. Total hiking is 2-3 miles difficulty is rated as “easy”. It is a fairly level walk through towering Redwoods along several lush creeks and only a modest elevation gain. The trails are well maintained and are child friendly, however some people have been known to get their shoes wet while crossing the creeks on their way to see the spectacular 100 foot waterfall. Monthly Conversatio Join our prayer conversation on the second Tuesday of each month, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. In prayerful discernment, participants listen to God by exploring a Bible passage or the life of a saint. The experience is open-ended and generative in nature. We meet in the chapel, located on the northwest corner of the church campus.

2013 Big Sur Foragers Festival To Benefit The Big Sur Health Center A celebration of the amazing array of wild foods will be the centerpiece for a weekend of gourmet food, world-class wine and beer, entertainment, expert-led foraging hikes and a chef competition. On January 11th and 12th Big Sur area restaurants will host the culinary expertise of notable chefs preparing unique fare from rustic to elegant, paired with the region's amazing selection of wines and beers. The event also serves as a fundraiser for the Big Sur Health Center. Dogs and bikes are not allowed on the trails. The Moss Landing Wildlife area has a short easy trail that is adjacent to the main channel of the Slough. Bring your camera as it is a good place to watch sea otters, harbor seals and migrating birds. Kirby Park has a wheel chair accessible trail. We will decide which routes depending upon who is coming. Perhaps we will have reason to enjoy them both. We will meet at the church to carpool and depart at 10:00 a.m. From Carmel the trip is 21 miles or 25 minutes north. January Public Showing of Le Salon des Artistes On Friday January 25, Le Salon des Artistes, a newly formed group of artists here at All Saints' ,will host their second public salon prior to the concert featuring Trio Globo. The public, members and ticket buyers are all welcome. The pre-show exhibit and mixer begins at 6:30 p.m. in Grant Hall. Select pieces will be available for sale and more shown during the after glow party. Wine and cheese at the salon will be provided as well as a chance to meet the artists and hear the story of each piece they are presenting. Pastoral Care Team Anyone interested in joining the Pastoral Care Team is invited to attend an informative session on Saturday January 26, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the church library. This ministry is forming to train church members to visit those who are temporarily sick, hospitalized or unable physically to attend church. All will be trained to visit, pray with and encourage our church members. Some will also be trained to be Lay Eucharistic visitors taking communion from the altar to our parishioners. Some of you may want to join us for events only, like caroling at Christmas or taking Easter baking to homes, knitting a prayer shawl or making a phone call. Come to see what we are planning and let us know how you can be involved in caring for those who can not regularly join us for worship and ministry. Book Club The All Saints’ Book Club has had another successful year of selecting and discussing a diverse collection of books. Now we’re approaching our January 2013 meeting, which will be held in the church library on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 starting at 6:00 p.m., when we’ll choose our lineup of books for the new year. This past year has been bitter sweet for the Book Club; two of our long time members have moved away from Carmel. We always consider our long distance Book Club friends as members, but we’re also always open for new members. If you have a love of books, good company and fine salad dining, come join us in January and help us vote on our 2013 book selections. There’s no pressure to attend every meeting or to even have read every book. This is a discussion group which meets at a café. Discussions are based on themes each month which parallel themes being dealt with in Limitless, but take the questions to a deeper level. This is a great place to invite friends, and seekers.

The vestry has created a Parish Mission Council to help the church and its five missions to know and pray for each others’ ministries, and to look for ways that we might coordinate and support one another. The first-ever meeting of the Parish Mission Council takes place on Wednesday, January 16. Please offer your prayers and thanksgivings for All Saints’ Church, All Saints’ Day School, Canterbury College Campus Ministry, Epiphany Lutheran & Episcopal Church, Santa Lucia Outdoor Chapel and Campgrounds, and The Center for Christian Transformation. Delegates to convention serve throughout the year by attending two or three deanery meetings, and by participating in the annual diocesan convention. All Saints' Singers; New Schedule

Canterbury College Campus Ministry

The All Saints’ Singers will have a slightly adjusted rehearsal schedule beginning January 10, 2013: our new time will be 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. (15 minutes later than before). Our parish children’s choir is also looking to grow. Currently we have several wonderful singers, but we are open to adding any child from grade two to six. No previous musical experience is necessary. Rehearsals, held on Thursdays from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45, are in the music room at the church, and the Singers sing the first Sunday of each month at the 10:30 a.m. service. Our next time to present music is February 3, 2013. All are welcome!

The vestry adopted a charter for the ministry, and a board is being formed this month. The Rev. Jon Perez has served as chaplain at CSUMB for a number of years and shares his office there with the Lutheran college chaplain and with volunteers, such as the Rev. Joan Anderson.

Music at 5:30 p.m. Service

This will be a workshop to learn ways you can use your creative energy to connect to God’s Spirit through art. Registration begins early January. Class will be February 9, 2013 at All Saints' from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Rev. Cynthia M. Spencer will be the instructor. Mark your calendar now.

Music for our 5:30 service is growing! On the first Sunday of each month, Evensong is presented by the Chancel Choir, and on the third Sunday each month, our new Palestrina Ensemble, an auditioned choir specializing in music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, presents music for this Rite II service. Come hear and enjoy these wonderful choirs in these contemplative and spiritual services.

Spirit Creating Art: Art Finding Spirit

Walking through Jello Sometimes its hard to find your way in life after experiencing loss. This discipleship series will be offered from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon from January 14, 2013 through February 18th by Mother Cynthia Spencer. The six sessions are designed to give your skills and support as you continue through life’s journey and your recent loss be it: death, divorce, loss of pet, job, friendship or health. There is no cost for the series. It it not a drop in class.
