During our Lenten study of the prophets on Sunday mornings, we were reminded that the dominant culture of King Solomon and his descendents was characterized by one-dimensional communication. That type of culture is sustained by the transmittal of factual memos, by a fierce concentration on bottom-line results, by filling quotas, by issuing commands. Typical speech in the dominant culture is thin in meaning and characterized by vast quantities of unilateral dictum.
April 2012 Disciples Glorifying Christ & Serving Others
Sound familiar? In contrast, the prophets uttered a message from God in poetry overflowing with fiery emotions and striking metaphor. They painted pictures that were sometimes imprecise, but always evocative, intemperate, and rich in meaning. The prophets did not set down doctrine, but their poetry conveyed
the passionate commitment of God. Prophetic speech is thick with meaning and summons us into deeper relationship with God and each other. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ enacts the poetry of God. As we observe and celebrate Holy Week and the Easter season, let us not diminish God’s Good News by jumping over the pathos, the passion, the piercing love, and the trumpeting joy, and landing with both feet on a flat interpretation of their meaning. Resurrection is a poetic experience, not elevator talk. Experiencing our relationship with the dying and risen Lord propels us to the liturgy, because liturgy at its best embodies and dramatizes the poetry of God. The familiar words of the liturgy rise to life again through the power of the Holy Spirit when we Continued on page 2

Continued from cover utter them to the glory of Christ and in service of those seeking faith, love, and hope. Poetry aptly conveys the mystery so appreciated in the Episcopal Church. Often we sing poetry, since our hymnal is richly stocked with powerfully beautiful texts. During the Great Fifty Days of Easter we will incorporate additional poetry into the liturgy and other portions of our common life. Come and hear. Gaze at the holy images being painted before your eyes. Stand close to the burning bush of the resplendent risen Jesus Christ. Carry the flame of the new fire in your hands as you serve others in his name. In Christ, Rick
What is the Triduum? The services of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Great Vigil of Easter make up one holy drama called the Triduum. The three liturgies enact the drama from the Last Supper to the Resurrection. At the beginning of the Maundy Thursday service we will hear an organ prelude and sing a hymn; likewise, organ music and a hymn will bring the Easter Vigil to a glorious close. But during the course of the Triduum, we will depart and return in silence. During the Triduum we participate in three acts of a single Christian drama, with extended breaks between.
Garage Sale Benefiting St. Patrick's, Haiti You've probably heard that there is no Rummage Sale at All Saints' this year. Liturgy in the Round
Private Confession
For seven weeks during the Easter season we will worship in the round, beginning on April 22. Over the same period we will observe some very traditional liturgical practices, one of which is to continue the reverential bow that we began in Lent. Another time-honored practice is to offer the traditional text of the Nicene Creed beautifully set to music.
You may come to the chapel on Good Friday between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. to make a private confession. Enter when the interior door is open, and shut the door for your own privacy. Fr. Rick will be offering the sacrament during these hours, but if this time does not work for you, please contact him at the office to set up an alternate time.
If anyone asks you why we are worshiping in the round during Easter, here are some reasons:
The Reverential Bow
• to permit the vitality of new life in Christ to touch us more deeply • to respectfully provide for the young in heart among us who prefer the creative and dramatic • to remember God’s oneness which we receive as a gift and are responsible for practicing • to stand in the succession of the Church, which is always growing, adapting, and changing (sometimes eagerly and other times reluctantly!) • because it is joyful and fun • because it is an appropriate means of worshiping the risen Christ who makes all things new
the Business Our Budget Gap Ed Fincke, Senior Warden Our budget gap for 2012 was $71,000, and is closing thanks to the generosity of so many. Assuming that pledges will all be paid, and that donations are made as expected, then our budget gap has closed to $42,000. Thus, we are well on our way to closing our budget gap so that we can maintain excellence in our five areas of ministry (Worship, Community, Discipleship, Stewardship, and Outreach.) We are experiencing wonderful energy and growth. For example our average-Sundayattendance has increased ten percent from 131
Fr. Rick We will continue the tradition begun in Lent of making a reverential bow at the beginning of the liturgy. The purpose of such a simple gesture is similar to the verbal exchange when the celebrant says, “The Lord be with you,” and the people respond, “And also with you.” The bow acknowledges God’s image in the other and Christ’s presence between us. I pray that you find this practice meaningful.
Lost and Found We have numerous umbrellas, jackets, hats and prescription glasses in the office. Call or come by to claim your lost items.

Our goal is to have the budget gap closed by June 1, 2012, prior to our mid-year budget review. Worship:
Good Friday: April 6
Both the noon and 7:00 p.m services will be Prayer Book liturgies that make up the middle act of the Triduum. During the Good Friday liturgy we will hear St. John’s Passion Gospel, offer devotions before the cross, and receive Communion from the reserved sacrament.
The Great Vigil of Easter: April 7 The first celebration of Easter occurs at the Great Vigil at 8:00 p.m. on the eve of Easter Day. This ancient, beautiful, and dramatic liturgy links us to the early Church and concludes the Triduum. Consistent with their Jewish heritage, the first Christians understood the new day to begin at sunset; thus, Easter Day begins when the sun sets on Saturday. We enter the Vigil in silence and in darkness; it is as if we entered the darkened tomb of Jesus. Our hope is symbolized by the creation of a new flame with flint and steel and the lighting of the paschal (Easter) candle. By its light, we hear the chanting of the Exsultet, one of the Church’s earliest and best-loved prayers. We continue Page 4 April 2012 thePatter
Easter Day: April 8 In the bright sunshine of Easter day we gather to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. With tulips outside and lilies inside, with glorious music and joyful proclamation, we celebrate the principal feast of the Church. On Easter day we will also introduce a new musical version of the Nicene Creed at the 10:30 a.m. service. This version, found in the 1982 Hymnal as S105, was composed by Calvin Hampton, a progressive composer who contributed much to the 1982 Hymnal.
Cherry Blossoms Will Return The anthem presented on March 11, 2012 at the 10:30 a.m. service was an arrangement of a composition written by Joan Cobb, a local resident, and Yoriko Hongo, a member of the All Saints’ Chancel Choir. The presentation was video-recorded, and you may connect to the All Saints’ channel on YouTube at http://youtu.be/ M-owQtp_mp4. Many thanks to all involved in honoring this day in prayer and service.

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein is the April All Saints’ Book Club selection. It’s a heart wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty and hope. It’s a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life as only a dog could tell it. Yes, a dog…

Caring Ministries Here at All Saints' we are embarking on a journey to organize a Caring Ministry to meet the needs of our parishioners. To begin, we hope to meet the more immediate and practical needs of our members, such as rides to appointments, home support for those recovering from illness or surgery, hospital and hospice visitation, meals to the bereaved or home bound and other needs as they are encountered. It is our hope that our fellow members will advise us when they or someone they know is in need, and give us the opportunity to offer the love and compassion we aspire to as Christians. Please contact Robin Reyes at rlmreyes@gmail.com, or 410-707-0064, or leave a message in the office if we can help you or someone you know, or if you are interested in joining our ministry.

UN Commission on the Status of Women By Robin Denney Last month, I had the honor of representing the US Episcopal Church to the United Nations Commission on the Status of women, as part of an Anglican Communion delegation of 20 women from around the world. As our two weeks in New York unfolded, we were able to advocate for women by meeting with member states and proposing amendments to the outcome document of UNCSW. In my time at the UNCSW, I learned some shocking statistics: In the US 1,000-1,600 women are killed each year by their spouses or partners. Women in the US lose 7.9 million workdays a year due to injury from domestic violence. One in five women in the US has been raped. Violence against women is largely hidden, plagues all parts of our society, and is not taken seriously enough. In Topeka Kansas last October, the city council voted to de-criminalize domestic violence, due to budget cuts. Women still make 88 cents on the dollar to men for jobs they are equally qualified for. The US ranks 94 out of 190 nations in terms of women’s representation in congress. We have the highest maternal mortality rate of the 40 most industrialized nations. And we are one of the six countries in the world that has not signed the international treaty for the human rights of women (CEDAW), along with Iran, Sudan, and Somalia. Returning home, I am more convicted than ever of the importance of working toward equality in our own country. The work the UN does is so important, and yet I learned that the real and lasting change is dreamed up and carried out at the grass roots. Change begins in our own hearts, our families, our churches, our communities…onward Christian peacemakers! Read more online: http://goo.gl/ge7g9
