On a number of occasions over the past one hundred years, All Saints’ has been poised for a significant change with the start of a major new ministry. Examples that come to mind are constructing the new church building, starting the day school, and establishing Santa Lucia chapel and campground. At such times many members might not even have realized that a major change for the better was about to take place.

What is conversatio?

A Because the transformative dynamic of the festival is the Christian community in the presence of the risen Lord, the leaders serve more as facilitators than as experts offering wisdom. Thus, by design, there are no “big name” speakers. In fact, there will be no formal lectures or addresses.

A The Vulgate translation of the Bible uses conversatio when Paul writes about the Christian’s way of life. St. Benedict incorporated this word into his monastic rule to describe both a way of life and a spiritual discourse for discerning God’s will for a specific decision. Conversatio is a spiritual dialogue in which participants seek to discern God’s voice or perspective while reflecting on a specific topic or question.

Q If there are no lectures or inspiring addresses, what should I expect?

Q How can I learn conversatio in such a brief time?

A The festival will include worship that is both traditional and contemporary. It will feature the spiritual discipline we are calling conversatio. It will provide time to learn and practice other spiritual disciplines from the great tradition of the Christian Church, and time to both listen and pray. It will include music and even a concert. The five meals include an informal bistro-style meal and a banquet.

A There will be a master session that everyone can observe, as well as small group and plenary sessions in which everyone can participate. Before these conversatio sessions there will be brief teachings, and afterward we will reflect on the process. The center will provide continuing instruction and opportunities to practice and reflect.

Finally, we hope you will be inspired to tell others about the festival, both in words and by the example of your choices, and encourage them to attend a future festival.

Who will attend the festival?

A We expect to welcome a combination of parishioners, local residents, and people who travel from distant locations. The festival is suited to Christians of any denomination, and to those considering or exploring the Christian faith. It is expected that people will set aside personal ideological or political agendas in order to form a community and to receive a deeper divine perspective. Q Why does the festival cost $245, but not even cover the cost of accommodations? A The 2012 Festival is funded by the fee of $245. At this time we have no underwriters, although our goal is to have such underwriting in the future (many foundations will not fund a startup ministry). The fee covers the five meals and the concert ticket, some overhead expenses, and funding to provide accommodations and meals for some of the guest participants who will facilitate a portion of the festival.

Fr. Rick will offer a series of sermons in September on the prayer of consecration. This series provides another way to offer an instructed Eucharist, and is intended to deepen our understanding and enrich our worship.

our Worship Spread the Word about the 5:30 p.m. Service All Saints’ presents three liturgies on each given Sunday: the 8:00 a.m. Rite I; the 10:30 a.m. blended Rite II with choir and band; and the 5:30 p.m. contemplative service. I am making an appeal for our parishioners to spread the word about the beautiful service for all ages at 5:30 p.m.

Worship:

We glorify Christ by enacting liturgies steeped in beauty, mystery, and creativity that refresh like springs of living water.

The 5:30 p.m. Mass is presented in a quiet and contemplative environment. Soft piano music is emphasized, with understated hymns and service music, all under candlelight. The first Sunday of the month features our choir and organ in a presentation of Evensong at 5:30 p.m. Beginning in September, the third Sunday 5:30 p.m. service will feature our new Palestrina Ensemble, with a focus on unaccompanied singing, and literature from the Renaissance and the Baroque. Summer Choir, Chancel Choir, and the Palestrina Ensemble The four Sundays of August will feature our annual Summer Choir. No experience is needed, and all are welcome. Each week we sing an easy anthem, with a rehearsal at 9:30 before the 10:30 service. All are invited to sit with their families and friends in the pews, then come up and sing the anthem in street clothes. If choir is not something you normally do, then this is for YOU! Regular weekly choir rehearsals begin for the Chancel Choir on September 6, 2012, starting at 7:00 p.m. in the music room. Thursday rehearsals will be from 7:00 until 8:15 or 8:30 each week. service for the season. New members are welcome and no auditions are required.

Our new Palestrina Ensemble will present music for the first time on September 16 at the 5:30 service. This choir is only open through audition. If interested in giving audition, please contact me at drtsamra@gmail.com. Please tell your musically inclined friends, as this group is open to all from our community.

All Saints’ Singers are Moving to All Saints’ Church On September 6, 2012, the All Saints’ Singers will begin rehearsals. One big change for this year: we are moving our weekly rehearsals to All Saints’ Church from All Saints’ Day School. The day and time will remain the same: Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The reason for the move is practicality: the church is where they eventually sing on Sundays, and our space is available during the week, so we will routinely rehearse here to help create an even flow from rehearsals to presentations (note that these are not performances). Our structure will use the music room, Seccombe Hall, and the chancel. Volunteers are needed to pick up students from the day school and transport them to the church – if interested, please e-mail me at drtsamra@gmail.com or call the church office.

Evensong, August 5th The Evensong Choir will be leading our service in song directed by Dr. Todd Samra, on the eve of the Feast of the Transfiguration. The music will feature the works of composers Jacob Arcadelt and Alec Wyton.

A Lovely Time at Santa Lucia Campers arrived as early as Wednesday and some left on Sunday afternoon. The weather at All Saints' Santa Lucia Campground and Chapel couldn't have been more lovely. The flowing river provided brave campers a refreshing swim and a break from the sunshine. At night campers gathered around the campfire to roast marshmallows and sing campfire songs and classic folk music from the 60's and 70's. Then on Saturday afternoon many more members arrived to enjoy the Annual Parish-wide Eucharist and BBQ. If you missed it this year, we hope that you will join us next year, and invite a friend. Remember that Paul’s Meadow is available for parishioners to camp at Santa Lucia. Reservations are required. Taking a Collection During the Liturgy An integral part of the Eucharist is collecting the gifts offered by the congregation. The gifts include the bread and wine, along with the monetary donations. These liturgical actions are not just a means of financing the ministries of the parish, nor do they represent a collection to pay for the service. Rather, giving is the essence of the Eucharist, and, in fact, the Eucharistic prayer is called the Great Thanksgiving. In this liturgy God generously bestows the Holy Spirit and Christ continues his once-and-for-all sacrifice on the cross. We respond by once more giving our bodies and souls to Christ. We also give of our labor in the form of money and by volunteering our time. All of this giving makes the Eucharist a transaction of love.

Planned Giving Ministry We will soon begin a planned giving ministry at All Saints’. With the parish adopting a new investment policy and the Foundation Trust Fund board agreeing to serve simultaneously as the investment committee of the vestry, we are in an excellent position to begin a yearround ministry of planned giving. Our centennial marks an excellent time for members and friends to remember All Saints’ Parish in our wills or estates.

When writing about men and women in Saudi Arabia, it's easy for western writers to slip into a patronizing or judgmental tone. Author Ferraris'never does this. She respects each character and the dilemmas they face. She shows how it's common and even acceptable to break some of the rules, if it's done discreetly and for good reason. This compelling mystery depicts the challenges of living in a closed, devoutly Muslim society and the effect those challenges can have on members of that society. When sixteen-year-old Nouf goes missing, along with a truck and her favorite camel, her prominent family calls on Nayir al-Sharqi, a desert guide, to lead a search party. Ten days later, just as Nayir is about to give up in frustration, her body is discovered by anonymous desert travelers. But when the coroner’s office determines that Nouf died not of dehydration but from drowning, and her family seems suspiciously uninterested in getting at the truth, Nayir takes it upon himself to find out what really happened to her. God Outdoors: Youth Camping and Hiking Program The youth group went on a camping trip to the Santa Lucia Campground in Big Sur. Summer Mission Trip Three middle school youth and Robin Denney will be going to McDermitt, Nevada, as part of the diocesean summer youth mission trip with Sierra Service Project. They will be doing home repair and learning more about life on the Paiute Shoshone Reservation. They will depart Saturday July 28 and return August 3. Please pray for the mission team!

Robin Denney, our youth leader and former missionary to South Sudan, will be traveling to South Sudan in September for three weeks. She will be visiting several dioceses in Western Equatoria State, and putting on an agriculture workshop with pastors in Ezo diocese who have recently returned to their land after four years of displacement from attacks by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Robin would appreciate your prayers for a safe and fruitful journey, and for the people of Sudan and South Sudan.

During its July meeting, the vestry discussed several aspects of the balcony project. We will authorize a contract for repairs and improvements of the balcony upon recommendation of the Buildings and Grounds Committee. The vestry also approved temporary use of excess income from Santa Lucia as seed money for the All Saints’ wine project. These funds will be paid back by April 2013.

Improvements Underway The Godly Play room is enjoying a facelift, with a new coat of paint and a new rug. We’re getting the room ready for another fun year of Bible exploration by our younger members. We hope that you have located the votive candles in their new home at the front of the nave. Feel free to light a candle when you come forward for Holy Communion, or at other times. We are contemplating replacing

the hymn board on that side of the nave with the carved wooden plaque that currently hangs in the baptistery. If you would like to voice an opinion about this move, please contact Fr. Rick or design committee members Susan Britton or Charlyn Brown. In the back of the church you will find a photo of Mark Adams’s artistic concept for the baptistery. Notice how much nicer the space already looks with the excess furniture removed. The walls will be repaired this month in preparation for the arrival of the Resurrection tapestry by the late Mark Adams.

When we lose touch with the simplicity and satisfaction of true poverty and true abundance, we find it difficult to respond to the needs of others. Jesus is the perfect example of the reconciliation and integration of poverty and abundance. He possessed everything, but owned only one coat. With the poverty of a few loaves he fed many, and in the poverty of his broken body he continues to feed the world.

There is also a small sign that says Big Sur Clinic and Santa Lucia Chapel. Make a very sharp right toward the clinic. Park cars at end of that drive and walk down to the chapel.
