ourRector’s Message

Patter

While saying Evening Prayer the other day, I prayed the words from Psalm 96, “Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” This set me thinking about beauty, not only the beauty of God’s holiness, but beauty itself. For we live in an area that is justifiably famous for its beauty.

Many people flock to the greater Carmel area, especially during July’s Carmel Bach Festival. In addition to Festival performances taking place at the church, several Festival musicians will sing or play at the 10:30 a.m. liturgy this month. The children involved in our own Bach to the Future program will also offer beautiful music.

July 2012 Disciples Glorifying Christ & Serving Others www.allsaintscarmel.org

Ironically, some of us local residents leave home this month, despite the beauty that attracts so many tourists and music lovers. It might be the beauty of other locales that attracts us. Or perhaps it is the beauty of family and friends that draws us temporarily away from our own dazzling environment. How do we respond to so much beauty, and how do we see it afresh, since we are constantly surrounded by it? And how do the psalmist’s words apply to our lives? First, it helps to look for God’s presence in the beauty we experience in our surroundings and our relationships. The Church teaches us to enjoy beauty as a gift from God. In fact, the early Church held beauty to be one of three approaches to God, along with truth and goodness. From this perspective, we are called to live as tourists, by looking with fresh eyes at the world though the lens of gratitude to God.

Our area provides people from around the world with a canvas of vibrant colors and pleasing images. This canvas reaches from Big Sur to the Salinas and Carmel Valleys, and details its stunning scenery, golf courses, galleries, restaurants, wineries, shops, and crowds of people from near and far. One of my favorite ways of participating in Second, and again like tourists, we the beauty that marks our area is by are called to seek out new events and environments to enjoy. Continued from cover are called to take a vacation from our normal schedule in order to appreciate something unique and wonderful. God invites us to disrupt our comfortable routines, because there is much more beauty than we can normally perceive, even in an environment like our own. Sometimes we see God best in new, remote or unexpected places. Third, liturgy unites our common experience of beauty with the beauty of God’s holiness. For the liturgy permits us to stand before the ineffable Father, to participate in the incomprehensible beauty of the crucifixion and resurrection of the Son, and to dance with the renewing Spirit. In the liturgy our beauty-making and the beauty of God’s holiness come together. Worship is not just one more option for enjoying something beautiful, as if we came to be entertained. It is the source from which beauty emanates. The sacrament is the wellspring from which we experience God’s beauty, and it provides the inspiration to share it with others.

A Celebration of Confession The General Confession, like both silent and sacramental confession, is more than apologizing to God. Confessing our sins affirms God to be Lord, and ourselves to be servants who fall short of the love of Jesus Christ. Confessing our sins in the liturgy is an act of adoration that creates a new beginning; it is neither a wallowing in sinfulness nor a way of dodging God’s anger. Because confession is an act of love, we include it in each liturgy, not only at the principal feast of the Sunday Eucharist, but also in the daily prayers outlined in the Prayer Book.

Book Club Unbroken, A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption is the July All Saints’ Book Club selection. Unbroken is a biography of World War II hero Louis Zamperini, a former Olympic track star who survived for more than two and half years in several brutal Japanese internment camps as a prisoner of war. Zamperini, a disciplined champion racer who ran in the Berlin Olympics, is portrayed as a wit, a prankster, and a reformed juvenile delinquent who put his thieving skills to good use in the POW camps. The young Italian-American from Torrance, Calif., was expected to be the first to run a four-minute mile. After an astonishing but losing race at the 1936 Olympics, Zamperini was hoping for gold in the 1940 games, but war ended those dreams forever. In May 1943 his B-24 crashed into the Pacific. After a record-breaking 47 days adrift on a shark-encircled life raft with his pal and pilot, they were captured by the Japanese. Zamperini landed in the cruelest of the Japanese POW camps: Omori and Naoetsu, under the control of a pathologically brutal sadist who never killed his victims outright—his pleasure came from their slow, unending torment. Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body and spirit. The All Saints’ Book Club regularly meets in the church library the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. The review leader/presenter brings lettuce for a salad, and the other participants bring something to place in the salad or food to share.

This training comes out of one of our Episcopal seminaries, and is especially designed to equip lay leaders for ministry. Even though the entire course is four years long, you need only make a one-year commitment. The first year focuses on the Old Testament, and connects the story of salvation with our personal stories of faith. The Rev. Wendy Howe will serve as mentor, and the group will meet at St. Dunstan’s. There will be an introductory class on August 5 that will give you an idea of what to expect. Family Faith

Commissioning of Robin Denney and Louis Powell

You are invited once again to participate in a series of Christian yoga classes on Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. from June 27 through August 1. Beth Lefebvre will welcome you, whether you are a longtime practitioner or a first-time explorer.

We commissioned Robin and Louis to discern God’s calling for their ministries. We also commissioned the congregation to help them discover whether that calling includes serving as a priest of the Church. The commissioning took place on June 17, after the two of them completed a Day of Discovery and entered the diocesan discernment process. We are equally charged to discern their calling, because the Church raises up its leaders, both lay and ordained. Page 6  July 2012  thePatter

Parents involved in the Family Faith Conversations enthusiastically favor having their children participate in the liturgy on Sundays. This summer Maria is offering children's sunday school as well as nursery for our younger members and visitors from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Each Sunday you will find special bulletins (The Sunday Paper and The Sunday Paper, Jr.) for younger and older children at the back of the church.

We offer our all so that The design subcommittee of Christ may change Buildings and Grounds was asked water into wine. to recommend to the vestry whether or not to accept the gift of a tapestry by Mark Adams, the artist who designed our baptistery. As you will read below, we recommended accepting the Resurrection Tapestry, and hanging it on the north wall of the baptistery. The beginning of our report describes Mr. Adams’s vision for the baptistry, and calls us to restore this unique and beautiful area to its original configuration. Here is the beginning of our report to the vestry, submitted by Susan Britton, Charlyn Brown, and Fr. Rick. Seeing the photo of the baptistery in a book featuring the art of Mark Adams helps us to view this space with new eyes. We observe that the vision of Mr. Adams for the baptistery was for the entire space to serve as an architectural canvas. Most especially, the floor and east wall are designed to capture the beautiful colors of the stained glass. The east wall displays brushstrokes of color, and the shiny floor shimmers with intense pools of colored light. We note that the relatively thin base and delicate shape of the font were designed to permit the eye to enfold the font with the colors on the wall and floor, as they continuously move with the sun. With Mr. Adams’ vision for this work before us, we recognize that over the years the parish has lost that vision. This once stunning and original liturgical space has become cluttered with objects that distract from the message of beauty and mystery. We recognize in the possibly of acquiring Mr. Adams’ Resurrection Tapestry a wonderful opportunity to recapture that original vision.

Altar Guild - Prepare the church altar for communion. Tidy up afterward. Flexible schedule. Contact Valerie Warren through the church office. Welcoming Team - Welcome visitors and members on Sunday Morning and introduce them to other members and leaders after the services. Contact the office or Bonnie Bufkin on Sunday to learn more. Bach to the Future - Join the team of volunteer adults serving the middle school and elementary school students enrolled in Bach to the Future for one or two weeks during the Bach Festival. Contact Todd Samra for more information.

Thank You We expressed our generosity in a big way at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 24. In response to the youth sermon on their mission trip, we sponsored their thirty-hour famine by pledging $2,250. Thank you Marilyn Burke for telling us of God’s faithfulness in both your struggles with cancer and multiple surgeries, and in your blessed remission. Thank you Ari and Lexie for sharing your story of faith and joy on Sunday, June 24. We admire your faith and learn from the example set by you and your youth group friends.

At youth group we have team building games, bible study, singing, and discuss life and spiritual topics.

God Outdoors: Youth Camping and Hiking Adventures We enjoyed our first hike on June 20, to Middledorf Preserve on the Big Sur Land Trust. It was a fourmile hike through a beautiful redwood grove along a stream. Mtr. Cynthia Spencer and Robin Denney led the hike, along with three youth participants. They had a picnic lunch and communion together on the preserve near the biggest redwood tree in the region.

Youth Group: July 1, July 15, August 5, August 19 To learn more about our youth ministry please email Robin Denney at redenney@gmail.com or call Robin on her cell phone 805-835-8538.

Youth and Family Service Days The June Youth and Family Service Day took place at the Thomas Carman pantry at Epiphany Church in Marina. Good News from the Vestry

Vestry Forum

Our four-month (February through May) campaign to fully fund our ministries is a success. The budget gap of $71,000 has been closed through the generosity of many. During our mid-year budget review conducted in June by the Finance Committee and Vestry, we projected a balanced budget for 2012, assuming pledges will all be paid and donations are made as expected, and new members join us in giving.

The vestry is holding a forum on Sunday, July 8, at 9:30 am. Join other parishioners in hearing about the progress of various ministries and projects. You are encouraged to bring any questions, or concerns. Also bring stories to add to the Telling the Great News at All Saints'.

We continue to experience wonderful energy and growth. We have created doors for people to join our community, such as through our enhanced website, Music At All Saints', Small Bites for Big Hunger, Christian yoga, Sunday and Wednesday bible studies, etc. Invite your friends through these doors, and, of course, we are open on Sundays, too.

The Gift of Poverty and Abundance When we separate the one divine gift of poverty and abundance, our life is fragmented and we become distracted and anxious. When we lose touch with the simplicity and satisfaction of true poverty and true abundance, we find it difficult to respond to the needs of others. Jesus is the perfect example of the reconciliation and integration of poverty and abundance. He possessed everything, but owned only one coat. With the poverty of a few loaves he fed many, and in the poverty of his broken body he continues to feed the world.

All Saints’ Vision:

By God’s grace and mandate, our future honors and carries forward the sacred heritage of All Saints’ Parish. We are called to be a diverse community filled with vitality and enthusiasm that celebrates together around the wellspring of Holy Communion, in order to be refreshed and equipped by the Holy Spirit. Living God’s future today, we attract more and more people of all ages into our fellowship of love and Christian formation. From this place we send forth members and establish missions that glorify Christ, serve others, and offer God’s hope to the world. Phone: (831) 624-3883
