From that first rush of a mighty wind and the descending tongues of fire, the disciples understood that their experience of God was a continuation of the resurrection. Jesus had explained in advance that his ascension was to be a preparation for the coming of the Holy Spirit. But the experience itself left little doubt, because the Holy Spirit pulsed with the same resurrection life.
the
That new life continues unabated to this day. Some of the manifestations of God in those early days seem incredible, and perhaps there was some exaggerating as the stories were told and retold. Nevertheless, the reality of God is as real today as before, and the vitality of the Holy Spirit is as lively now as then.

in our lives, and we can begin by considering generosity. The giving of the Holy Spirit makes the generosity of God abundantly clear. For what is the Holy Spirit but the immeasurable outpouring of the infinite and the eternal? The image Paul uses in Romans 5:5 pictures “God’s love being poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” I imagine someone tipping a bottomless container and pouring out a waterfall, a vast, endless quantity of fresh and life-giving water. If the Holy Spirit were a bodily being, our hearts would instantly overflow and we would quickly drown, but the Spirit is immaterial and thus all the more unrestrained and powerful. God gives without stint, and our response in receiving such abundant life is to do as God does: to give. The way of the cross is the way of life, and it turns out that the outpouring of the Spirit signals our way of life to be one of exuberant self-giving. Our response to God’s Pentecostal generosity is to give generously.
So we are challenged to recognize and claim this disconcerting and yet electrifying presence of the risen Lord in the power of the Holy Spirit. How is it that the Spirit of God animates the collective Body of Christ, which is the Church? What does it mean that our hearts dance with the flames of the Spirit? The season of Pentecost is a good time to discern We participate in God’s generosity what difference the Holy Spirit makes Continued on page 2

Continued from cover not only by walking the way of self-sacrifice, but by joining in fellowship with the invisible and mysterious Holy Spirit. The disciples’ experience with the Spirit led to them to describe its gifts. These lists enumerate both the effects of the Spirit, and the disciples’ responses to God’s Pentecostal gift. The most famous list is found in Galatians 5:22 where Paul writes, “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.” Notice generosity, because it is key. The last four months at All Saints’ has been an unofficial season of Pentecost, because we have been extremely generous in giving to fully fund our ministries. We have not yet totally balanced the budget, as you will read in this Patter, but we have a manageable amount left to raise and the vestry expects additional pledges and donations to fill in the gap. The response of the parish has been wonderfully pentecostal. However, the point of Pentecost is NOT to give toward a budget, or to give in order to provide services, and certainly not simply to give in order to receive something ourselves. The true motive for our generosity is the Holy Spirit who breathes
within, binding us together, comforting, leaping, giving utterance, healing, challenging, forgiving, sending out, inspiring, and groaning with sighs too deep for words again and again and again. Because God is so generous, giving becomes our way of life in Christ. I am very proud of this parish, never more than during the last four months as we engaged in our mini-campaign to fully fund our ministries. Now, as we begin the long season of Pentecost, we are ready to move on from funding a budget to focusing on God’s generosity. We are ready to continue giving generously of our time, skills, and money, because this is what we GENEROSITY do and who we are. God’s generosity dances like flames of fire through our giving, empowering the ministries of Christ’s Body, the Church. Our giving sets free the Holy Spirit to make a difference. + Rick

Restoration Plan Nearing an End During the last six years All Saints’ has turned from a declining and aging congregation to one of growth and vitality. The diocese has supported this new beginning through a program called Restoration. The restoration covenant we entered into permits the parish to pay less than our fair share to support the ministries of the diocese, and places the parish under diocesan oversight. They require a vision and strategic plan, and annual reports on our progress. Each year we have paid a higher percentage of our fair share, and next year we will resume paying one hundred percent. Below are letters from the Board of Trustees review committee and from Bishop Mary. May 23, 2012 The Rev. Richard B. Matters All Saints’ Episcopal Church P.O. Box 1296 Carmel, CA 93921 Dear Rick:
Father Rick retired as a teacher at All Saints’ School. • This spring their budget took a $10,000 hit over a disagreement on how to fund the $63,000 needed to repair their balcony. • They continue to be on target to exit the restoration program in 2013. All Saints’ is a complex parish operating in an unusual and challenging demographic environment. Under Father Rick’s leadership, they have undertaken some touchy issues, such as reconfiguring their worship times and service content. Changes like these typically cause erosion in ASA, membership, and income, and All Saints’ has experienced all three. However, they seem to be rebounding and making good progress. The RRC recommends that the trustees accept their update and wish them continued success. Accompanying note from Bishop Mary:
On behalf of the Board, I commend All Saints’ on its progress. I know challenges lie ahead but there is a refreshing spirit of change flourishing at All Saints’ and you and your lay leadership are to be commended for all you’ve accomplished. I All Saints’, Carmel, continues to make progress. add my personal congratulations and best wishes As with some of our other restoration churches, to you and all the people of All Saints’ and pray they have financial challenges, but in the case for your continued success in the future. of All Saints’, they appear to be handle-able. All Saints’ submitted another well-written and Faithfully, thoughtful report, discussing in detail their +Mary Gray-Reeves achievements and challenges. The highlights The Rt. Rev. Mary Gray-Reeves Bishop, El Camino Real are many and a few are noteworthy: Congratulations to you and all the people of All Saints’! In their report to the Board of Trustees, the Restoration Review Committee summarized your 2012 restoration update as follows:
• Their ASA (Average Sunday Attendance) increased from 131 to 143 in 2011. • They have 22 new pledging units in 2012 and are back up to their 2010 level of 100 pledging units. • They ended 2011 with a bank debt of $23,000, the same amount they owed in 2010. • For 2012, they lost $30,000 in income when thePatter June 2012 Page 3

Santa Lucia Summer Services
Invite your friends to the weekly service at the Santa Lucia Chapel of All Saints’ Parish, located at our campground next to the Big Sur River. Tell them to drive south on Highway 1 and take the first righthand turn after the village of Big Sur. We worship amid the redwood trees at 5:30 p.m. each Saturday in June, July, and August.
Marilyn Byrne to Share a Story of Faith Marilyn Byrne will join Fr. Rick in presenting a sermon based on how she and her family have been following the footsteps of Jesus during her treatments for cancer. Her experience is such a heartwarming and powerful testimony of God’s faithfulness that Marilyn is writing a book about it. She will speak on June 10 at the 10:30 liturgy.
On the Feast of Pentecost we displayed the names of all those baptized at All Saints’ over the last one hundred years. These names are also contained in a binder located at the back of the church. Feel free to look through for specific names, or the Season of Pentecost simply be amazed at our heritage of Let us come together and "discern what difference the Holy Spirit makes in our lives". making saints by reading the 1,739 names! Telling the Great News of All Saints'
We continue the year-long celebration of our centennial. The May 25 Pentecost Day surprises were well received, including the 50-50 bars (Creamsicles) given out after the services. All Saints’ Day School gave each student a 50-50 bar on the fiftieth day of school, in order to observe its fiftieth anniversary, so on Sunday we observed fifty years of ASDS and fifty more years of All Saints' Church. The display of all who were baptized during our first one hundred years will hang in the church throughout June. We hope you found some names you recognize among the 1,739!
The vestry experienced an epiphany when it realized that we both grow the church and empower our many ministries by telling others the great news of All Saints’ Parish. This is because people join and contribute their time, talent, and treasure to organizations that have happy, hopeful attitudes, live by the values of the Gospel, and encourage people to participate. Members of the vestry then asked what stories they might tell, and created a long list that you will find on the web under the title of “Telling the Great News of All Saints’.” They each made a commitment to tell at least five others, in the hope that those five would, in turn, further share our great news. They invite you to join them! Here are just a few samples of their ongoing list.
Looking ahead, we will observe our founding day on July 1 at all three services, and on August 26 we’ll enjoy a birthday party luncheon. Mark your calendars and invite a friend.
• Twenty-five youth have participated in youth group events this year, with twenty-two participating more than once. Seven of these are friends of other youth, and not members.

Discipleship:
Parents involved in the Family Faith Conversations enthusiastically favor having their children participate in the liturgy on Sundays, so we are cancelling the Seasons of the Spirit class for children in grades three to five. Godly Play for the 10:30 a.m. service and nursery care from 9:00 a.m. to noon will continue. Each Sunday you will find special bulletins (The Sunday Paper and The Sunday Paper, Jr.) for younger and older children at the back of the church.
We follow Jesus Christ and lead others into the deep waters of faith.
Throughout the month of June, Fr. Rick will lead discussions on the biblical prophets and our prophetic role in contemporary society. On Sunday, July 1, the vestry will hold its semiannual forum. Vestry members look forward to reporting on the state of the parish, answering questions, and hearing your hopes and dreams for the work of Christ among us.
Youth Ministry by Robin Denney The youth ministry will continue at the regular time, the first and third Sundays of the month following the 10:30 a.m. service (11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.). At youth group we have team building games, bible study, singing, and discuss life and spiritual topics. Youth Group: June 3, June 17, July 1, July 15, August 5, August 19 We have three youth participating in the Sierra Service Project middle school mission trip this summer to McDermit Nevada ( July 29 - August 3). They will be staying in a local elementary school gym while helping with home repair projects on the Paiute-Shoshone Reservation. This is a spiritual, cultural, and servant journey they are embarking on. Robin Denney, our youth leader, will also be going as a chaperone. We need to raise $1,500, in order to cover the cost of the trip, in addition to what the youth will contribute themselves. This cost goes to cover transportation and the program cost including supplies. If you would like to contribute send a check to All Saints' Episcopal Church, memo: "youth mission". To learn more about our youth ministry please email Robin Denney at redenney@gmail.com or call Robin on her cell phone 805-835-8538. Page 6 June 2012 thePatter

Conversatio On the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month we are offering conversatio. This is a modern version of an ancient spiritual discipline from the Benedictine tradition that consists of prayerfully listening through a small group discussion around a specific subject. Come to All Saints' Chapel of Sts. Benedict and Scholastica on the corner of Lincoln and Ninth (next to our Choir Room) at 5:00 p.m. for a one-hour time of discernment.
Christian Yoga You are invited once again to participate in a series of Christian yoga classes on Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. from June 27 through August 1. Beth Lefebvre will welcome you, whether you are a longtime practitioner or a first-time explorer.
Wednesday Bible Study Please join the Wednesday Morning Bible Study Group in June as the group will begin studying the book of Acts. The group just finished an exegetical study of the book of 1 Thessalonians. One of their favorite verses was: "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing." - 1 Ths 5:11

During the same period we lost $11,000 in pledges (due to pledge adjustments and departures from the parish), so we currently are just $18,000 away from fully funding our ministries. The vestry will continue to seek donations and pledges in order to balance the budget, but they do so with great gratitude and optimism.

At 9:00 a.m. on June 1 the halls, parking spaces and church will be full of young families from All Saints' Day School. The graduation ceremony is the culmination of a student’s educational years at All Saints’ Day School and is always a touching occasion. Held each year at All Saints' on the first Friday morning in June, all students join in as we celebrate the graduation of our 8th graders. Poised graduates give articulate, moving, and memorable graduation speeches to the audience of students, parents, families and friends. A reception hosted by 7th grade parents is held in the parish hall immediately following. It is a never-to-be-forgotten day.

Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave, and Henrietta’s family did not learn of her “immortality” until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. Aside from the fascinating scientific advances in this story, there are also extremely heartrending human consequences. Why, if Henrietta Lacks was so important to medicine, couldn’t her grandchildren afford health insurance?

At the recommendation of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, the vestry has decided to restart the design and construction process for the balcony. Now that we have confirmed that the balcony is structurally sound, we will take the time necessary to create a safe and attractive balcony within a well-managed budget.
To fulfill the two goals they established in January, vestry members are each making a commitment to tell at least five other people at least one piece of the “Great News at All Saints’.” They generated a list of such great news, which you will find in this edition of the Patter, and they invite you also to tell at least five others.
We accepted with gratitude the offer of a tapestry from the estate of artist Mark Adams, who also designed our baptistery. An ad hoc design task force composed of Charlene Brown, Susan Britton, and Fr. Rick recommended acceptance, and the vestry approved. We await the formal offer of this piece of fine art, which will be hung on the north wall of the baptistery.
In July Jacklyn Graham will begin to serve as the new Treasurer for the Vestry of All Saints'. This is a three year volunteer position. Jackie has extensive experience in banking, strategic planning, transitions, and has experience serving on a vestry at her previous church.
The vestry unanimously adopted a three-year business plan that projects how we will continue to grow our membership and ministries while meeting our financial responsibilities.
Editorial Corrections In the June Patter an article, 'Nancy Jones' was misappropriated to Andrea Matters and had several grammatical errors. The volunteers and staff regrets this error. thePatter June 2012 Page 13
