ourRector’s Message Our life in Christ inspires gratitude and that gratitude, in turn, inspires us to embrace life. As Christians, we acknowledge that all we are and all we have derives from God. Jesus Christ is God’s ultimate gift to us, and we respond to the sheer magnitude of grace by living a life of gratitude. No wonder that our principal service each week is called the Great Thanksgiving.

we showed our gratitude for All Saints’ with a special liturgy and luncheon. One month from now, on November 4, we will conclude our year of centennial celebrations with a “great thanksgiving” in which Bishop Mary blesses and commissions our missions and ministries. That evening, in a beautiful festal Evensong, we will offer gratitude for all of those from All Saints’ who have gone before us.

The second core value of the school, written long ago by Fr. Farmer, Fr. Hill, and other leaders, expresses this Christian value in this way: “inspiring our young people to live God-centered lives that are rich with gratitude and grace.” Michele Rench, today’s wonderful head of school, declared gratitude and grace to be the theme for this school year. She couldn’t have chosen more wisely. Among other things, the school community is grateful to the vestry and church for supporting the recent building project.

On a personal note, let me tell you how thankful I am for you and the entire All Saints’ community. It is a pleasure to serve as your rector. I am grateful for all of the leaders, team members, and solo servants who carry forward our ministries. As we look back on the first-ever Festival of Christian Spirituality, I am grateful for God’s inspiration and for all who have prayed about and discussed this ministry over the past five years. I am grateful for the long-time members who have faithfully served over the years. I am equally grateful for the newer members who have joined During this centennial year we the church, and for the wave of new have found a number of ways of arrivals. I honor all who serve in our expressing gratitude. Last month missions. Continued on page 2

Continued from cover We can all be grateful for the surprises that God sends us like manna from heaven. We are grateful for the Blyth family bequest that enabled us to embody the vision of excellence in music for all ages, for the donations of many to our several plant improvements, for the vestry’s courage and follow-through to provide funds for Robin Denney to serve as our youth minister. We are grateful for the most recent grace-gift of the restoration of the baptistery and the gift of the Resurrection Tapestry. The image of the figure with outstretched arms on this tapestry captures gratitude, for the person has clearly been transformed by grace through resurrection and embraces life with body, mind, and spirit. As we pray about how to respond faithfully to the pledge appeal in the centerfold of this newsletter, I ask you to let your decision flow from gratitude.

Nominations for Vestry Might God be calling you to serve as a spiritual leader through the vestry? Speak to a current vestry member (Ed Fincke and Nan Walker are your wardens), or Fr. Rick. Also talk to others if you think God might be calling them. Vestry members provide spiritual leadership, especially by carrying the vision, aligning us to our mission or purpose, and following a strategic plan. The vestry also raises money and watches over the operating budget and the care of our buildings and grounds. They support our missions and ministries. They pray for our staff and members. There are a number of committees of the vestry that help make these tasks more manageable.

Deciding How Much to Pledge You decision is personal, of course, and is based on your financial means, informed by your faith and desire to make a difference. Before making your decision, you might read St. Paul’s teaching on giving in 2 Corinthians, chapters 8 to 10. Another teaching of the Bible is the standard of tithing. This teaching reminds us that all we have comes as a gift from God, and we respond by first giving back to God in gratitude ten percent of our income in service to God and others. Thinking by percentage helps frame our stewardship by gratitude, and proportions our pledges around God’s grace. Although ten percent is the biblical standard, you might find Continued on page 11 a Generous

our Outreach All Saints' Food Pantry Every year we give out about 600 food bags, (at 10 plus items per bag,) and 200 food boxes (at about 30 items per box,) we would be safe in saying that every year we give out over twelve thousand cans, packages and boxes of non perishable food.

Outreach:

We serve others with the compassion of Christ by offering sustenance to those in need.

Hans Lehmann is making preparations for the loading and distribution of about one hundred food boxes before Christmas. Some boxes stay at All Saints'. Some go to Big Sur. Some are distributed by Epiphany, and others to Nancy Costello, who takes them to South County. This year, we will pack our Christmas food boxes on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 10:00 a.m. in Seccombe Hall. We welcome new workers. The project takes only one hour. If you would like to help, we would be delighted. Just come on by or call Hans Lehmann for more information. 624 0540.

In July we provided food bags to thirty five households, helping seventy six people in total (fourteen children and thirteen seniors). Another twenty-six men were provided hospitality and lodging via our support of I-HELP.

Reaching Out to St. Patrick's in Haiti California Friends of St. Patrick's School has begun to make a profound difference at St. Patrick's. The vestry is pleased to see the balcony renovation underway. Long awaited, the Buildings and Grounds team has invested hours in discerning the extent of the needed repairs and improvements. Now Caribou Construction is making wonderful progress. In addition to the balcony, in September Grant Hall and the benches in Grant Garden were painted, and the walkway on Dolores is now nearly complete. The vestry's Strategic Planning Committee has drafted a mid-range development plan for 20132015 identifying a few leverage points for each year and several objectives that will help us fulfill our mission and meet the needs of our members. See Stewardship on page 7 to learn more about becoming a vestry member.

the Treasurer's Desk For those of you doing the math, it is only due to the generosity of former members that the additional revenue sustaining us comes from our various trust funds throughout the year. My fondest hope would be for those monies to be used for major enhancements to our ministries and facilities in the future versus annually for regular operations. Income Year-to-Date*

Stewardship - Continued from page 11 more members in need of pastoral care and discipleship. One of our faith goals in 2013 is the launch of five small groups. I'm very excited about this new venture in faith. Over the years I've overseen the creation and support of nearly two hundred small groups for adults, children, youth and college students. In one church alone we had over seventy small groups meeting in our members homes in three different counties. As we launch this ministry here at All Saints' I will be providing the training for our members. I am praying that God will bring forth ten members who are willing to gather for an eight week bible study and training session. The group, which may have to meet at various times, will begin in late October so that we can commission the new small group pastors before the end of the year. So like apostles, who came out of hiding in the upper room, we invite you to come, as you are, ready for growth, service and sacrifice.

If you feel like God could be calling you to this ministry in one role or another, I invite you to RSVP and join me at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16 for an initial planning and prayer meeting in the chapel. Even if you are not certain, I urge you to call me or RSVP and come to the first session where you can prayerfully discern your calling and learn more.

For some, Christianity may be easiest when they start by studying the words of Christ, but his words don't get much harder than his commands and particularly that of the "Great Commission" in Matthew 28:19-20. That passage begs the question: Are we his disciples? And if we're not making disciples, are we still considered disciples? What has the Lord taught you these many years? What joy fills your heart when you think of God's grace? What Bible passages have transformed your life? If you led three people to Christ, discipled them, and trained each one to reach three other people, and everyone that was discipled in turn reached three other people each year, then in just 36 years the number of disciples would amount to 1,048,576. That’s exponential growth.

Training will focus on teaching you practical small group skills, spiritual growth, and also teach a philosophy of ministry that is similar to the first century Church. The model we will use will mobilize small group pastors (the pastoral leader), apprentices (who will learn more "in the field" from the small group leader and also attend future training events), and spiritual coaches (who will continue to support and Let's begin our small group ministry in 2013 with five leaders and their apprentices, leading five encourage the leaders and small groups). groups, reaching at least twenty five members.

All Saints’ Salon des Artists! There are many artists in our community actively working in every medium: poetry, photography, dance, painting, and sculpting and we are beginning to work together for fellowship as well as mutual support and encouragement, and the sharing of new ideas. Join with other artists and help shape this All Saints’ artist community with your creativity and dreams. To get involved or to ask questions, contact Marcia Jeiroudi at mojeiroudi@gmail.com.
