ourRector’sMessage There is a religious overtone to observing New Year’s Day; it has to do with giving thanks to God for the past year and anticipating God’s continuing grace in the future. When we pause at the beginning of the year to look backward or forward, we tend to see the bigger picture, and in doing so we can glimpse God’s presence in our lives. I invite you to lift your eyes to the horizons of past and future, and to look for sightings of God. Just like the whale spouts we observe from Carmel Beach, most frequently in January, our sightings of God might look faint, blurred by the haze, leaving us wondering whether our eyes are playing tricks on us. However, it is precisely in times of uncertainty that we enter more fully into the realm of faith. For as the author of Hebrews reminds us, “faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (11:1). I also invite us to gaze at the collective horizon of All Saints’ this centennial year. By looking back we can discover God inspiring those who have gone before us. The repeating patterns in our history are striking, and point toward God’s purpose for this parish. For instance, we have been a congregation that starts missions, including St. Matthias (Seaside), St. Dunstan’s (Carmel Valley), Bishop Kip’s School (now All Saints’ Episcopal Day School), Santa Lucia Chapel and Campgrounds (in Big Sur), and Epiphany Lutheran and Episcopal Church (Marina). So it might come as no surprise to discover a new mission on the horizon of our future. Our newest mission is a Center for Christian Transformation, designed to host Festivals of Christian Spirituality.
Page 2 January 2012 thePatter
Each festival will focus participants on a topic critically relevant to society, and will bring to bear the answers provided by the Gospel. We hope that those who attend will be inspired and equipped to address concrete needs in their local circumstances, most likely in small but spiritually significant ways. We envision that the rich spiritual traditions of the Church that are part of each festival will help people participate in God’s continuous transformation, thereby empowering them to serve as Christ’s agent for transforming the world. Between festivals the center will provide means for participants to stay connected and to receive ongoing support. This center will have the same focus on education and formation that prompted us to start All Saints’ Day School and to help start York School. In a very real way, All Saints’ Parish has served as a center for Christian growth and service for decades, maybe even from its inception. As we begin our next one hundred years, let us claim this heritage and ask how All Saints’ can more effectively serve as such a center through our five areas of ministry. I believe that God is calling us to become, in ever-more-relevant ways, a center where individuals are transformed by the love of Christ to serve others. Clearly there are other signature patterns that recurred in our first one hundred years and that we can sight even today. Excellence in liturgy, beauty of music, energetic compassion, attentive care for others, and ministries for youth might come into focus as you gaze with gratitude on the horizon of All Saints’ future. In Christ, Fr. Rick

theVestry Message Investment Plan and Policy
Nominations for Vestry
As you have been reading each month, the vestry and foundation board have been working on a comprehensive plan for oversight of the investments for which the vestry is responsible. The foundation board oversees the parish’s Foundation Trust Fund, which is separately incorporated under its own bylaws. For many years the vestry has had responsibility for several designated funds that are beyond the scope of the foundation. A number of parish leaders have worked very hard to develop a policy and comprehensive plan for parish investments, in order to increase the range of endowment options for members and establish better coordination between the vestry and the foundation board.
The following five people have agreed to stand for election to the vestry: Ed Childs, Bill Mattmiller, Dave McClendon, Anne Powell, and Harrison Shields. We are still receiving nominations. You may volunteer yourself or nominate someone who has agreed to stand for election. Candidates must be members in good standing who have a record of financial giving to the parish and are willing to serve.
The two documents will be made available soon, so that all interested members may study them. If you have any questions, you are encouraged to attend the special forum held on Sunday, January 22, at 9:30 a.m. You may also speak to vestry or foundation board members. The parish will be asked to ratify the investment policy at the annual parish meeting on January 29. Please join the vestry and foundation board in thanking the leaders who worked so assiduously on these documents: Al Alvarez, Ed Childs, Ed Fincke, and Allan Groves.
Elections will be held on January 29 during the annaul parish meeting. Contact Marcia McCleary, LeAnn Keaton, or the office with any names or questions.
Vestry Forum Join the two special forums held at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday adult education. On January 15, senior warden, Ed Fincke will lead a conversation on the rector’s pastoral message, which Fr. Rick will give at the conclusion of the January 8 morning services and will also be available in printed form. On January 22 vestry member, Allan Groves, and new president of the foundation trust fund, Al Alvarez, will lead a discussion on the new investment plan and policy adopted by the vestry, and which will also be available by January 8.

Book Club I can’t believe another year of books, good company and lively discussion has passed for the All Saints’ Book Club. We have again reached our annual meeting where we choose our lineup of books for the year. At the January 10, 2012 meeting, members bring three book selections they believe the Book Club would be interested in reading for the New Year. After a short synopsis of each book, we democratically vote on the 11 selections for coming year. For those of you who have not had the pleasure to visit the monthly All Saints’ Book club meeting, this might be a good time to attend. There is no pressure to have read any books; just a time to get to know the other members and interject your opinion, if you wish. I’ve been a member of the All Saints’ Book Club for four years now. I love books but thought, “what do I have to contribute?” Well, everyone’s opinion is valued, and I’ve had an opportunity to discover literary genres I would never think to explore. This experience has opened my horizons and will
yours, also. Come in January and join the fun, while you experience intellectual companionship and a deep, enriching experience.
The All Saints’ Book Club regularly meets in the church library the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. The review leader/presenter brings lettuce for a salad, and the other participants bring something to place in the salad or food to share.
Author Talk & Book Signing Elizabeth Barratt recently published her book on the history of All Saints’ Parish. On Saturday, January 21, at 2:00 p.m. we will host an Author Talk and Book Signing in Seccombe Hall. Please join us and bring a friend.
Centennial 1892 BCP in Review The older book of common prayer (BCP) used by the first generation of All Saints’ parishioners contained the same beautiful language as our current Rite I liturgies, but the prayers were longer and much more of the service was spoken by the priest alone. Evidently the ministry of the laity was not a pressing issue one hundred years ago. The service required those worshipping to spend more time on their knees, and we noted a greater emphasis on our sinfulness and God’s consequent wrath, but also the clear message of the saving grace of Jesus Christ. There was less music and no Old Testament lesson or psalm. No one seemed to mind that Fr. Rick did not make the service more authentic by preaching for an hour. Happy anniversary! thePatter January 2012 Page 5

each stop or voice has been sampled from a real set of pipes installed in an existing organ using extremely fine recording equipment. The notes thus recorded are then transcribed into a digital format. The sound of each note of one voice is then represented by a series of ones and zeros, and encoded on a "prom." Each of the voices of the All Saints' organ is thus encoded on a separate "prom" in the computer. Each of these voices can be adjusted to work well with our building's acoustics. The organ has 55 separate voices, which represent a 55-rank pipe organ. Ideally voiced, this organ is capable of handling all of the same organ literature as if it contained 55 ranks of acoustic pipes. It's true that computer technology has advanced light-years beyond that which is represented in our organ, of 1989 vintage; however, the capability to make mighty-fine music is really there, with careful voicing. Fast-forward to 2011. I have retired (12-2010) from my position, held for thirteen years, as Music Director-Organist at Saint John's, where it was a job requirement that I be a church member. I have now been privileged to rejoin All Saints, although, Jim and I spend most of our time at our home in San Francisco. About two months ago, Richard invited me to try the organ and "see what I thought." I was appalled! On going through the organ carefully, stop by stop, it became quickly apparent to me that the voicing of most of the stops had been altered so as to render the organ nearly expressionless, tonally - certainly nothing close to what it had once been able to produce, musically. With the blessing of Fr. Rick, Todd, and Richard, I embarked on
a total-organ revoicing project, the majority of which has been completed just in time for the upcoming Christmas services. I have spent approximately thirty hours adjusting the organ's computer system to restore the proper voicing characteristics to each of the 55 ranks. Much of the work required careful listening - out in the nave - to a number of individual notes of each voice, to be sure the tonal and volume adjustments were compatible with the building's acoustics. My years of association with pipe organs, and lessons I have had regarding tuning and voicing of pipe organs has been invaluable, since the principles and theory of voicing a digital organ are similar. Definitely, the end product of a careful revoicing job should render our organ nearly indistinguishable from a fine pipe organ with a palette of stops. Whilst the majority of the work has been completed, there is still some "fussy", subtle work remaining to bring the very best music from each of the stops, and this work will continue for some weeks. As you listen to the organ this Christmas I hope the glorious music it now produces will be a spiritual support for your personal worship experience. It is a great honor and privilege to have been entrusted with this project, and an even greater honor to be welcomed back to the All Saints' family with such enthusiasm! I'm delighted to be able to make this contribution to All Saints' and to the Greater Glory of God. Merry Christmas! Clay C. Couri thePatter   January 2012  Page 7

Food for Thought The Outreach Commission has been reviewing the use of the annual Rummage Sale as our primary mechanism to raise independent funds. After special meetings on the subject, the commission has decided not to hold the rummage sale in 2012, but to replace it with a similar, but more focused, event on the same weekend. We plan to use Best-of-the-RummageSale ideas, emphasizing the successes we have had with the Friday night preview event. Our theme will be “Food for Thought” and we will target our advertising on raising money specifically for foodrelated activities, so that we may continue the work we do in donating food to the larger community. Though we have not solidified all our plans, we have in mind a small plates (serving significant appetizers and wine) event on Friday night, May 11, that carries a cover charge. The primary focus of our fund-raising efforts that evening will be a major silent auction at which offered items with a minimum value of about $100 (the exact amount has not yet been established, but we want to feature fewer, more valuable items). We will work with Epiphany on the event and expect to create this new centennial year event that will salute the traditions of the past, while looking ahead to the most effective ways in which
Page 10 January 2012 thePatter
we can serve the needs of the parish and the community at large. Ideas for items appropriate for the silent auction include new of lightly used items, gift cards (e.g., for a restaurant or other retail shops in the area), services, and trips. These donations should be directed to the Outreach Commission.
Parishioners who have been collecting goods that were intended for the rummage sale are directed to Epiphany, which holds rummage sales frequently, or to the IOC’s Joining Hands Benefit Shop in Carmel, where proceeds go to area housing causes. More details will be provided on this subject as our subcommittees get working. In December, the Outreach Commission purchased and sorted food for 100 food boxes for the season, with our Cub Scout troop packing them. We will end the year with about 480 food bags given out in the office. Children’s Christmas gifts were collected, with all going to Epiphany this year. In addition to a large and generous contribution of toys and clothing, we were able to purchase $650 worth of gift cards for Father Jon to distribute. We also continue to provide food to the community through our daily food bags at the office and our monthly I-Help dinners.
Epiphany Epiphany recently took the lead in Marina’s effort to acknowledge the tragic November fire at a local home for disabled persons, at which five people died. The city has now asked Epiphany to manage the public funds that have come in for that cause. The service that Epiphany hosted for the community was a standing-room only expression of support for those affected.
International Reach We continue to be part of the Friends of St. Patrick group, consisting of All Saints’ Church and All Saints’ Day School, St. Edwards in San Jose, and St. Jude the Apostle in Cupertino. “Gifts of Life” brochures have been added to the Outreach table by the south door of the church.

Balcony Renovation We have begun the engineering study to learn what degree of water damage may have occurred to the balcony concrete and rebar over the course of the last fifty years. The Buildings and Grounds Committee wants to undergo the research before they proceed with the chosen proposal that includes: resurfacing the balcony to prevent further water penetration, rebuilding the rail, adding a lower gutter, and replacing the exterior balcony planter with a bench. After all the reports have been reviewed by the building and grounds committee, the vestry will consider the reports and recommended financing options that will be recommended by the finance committee.

an Invitation
from the
Dear Friends, As you have seen advertised in Along the King’s Highway and heard in my convention address, The Reverend Eric Law will be our conference leader for Sharing our Story, on January 14, 2012. From 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Eric will assist us in becoming more aware of our spiritual and ecclesial story, sharing what we have with others, so that it may empower them to discover their faith life with God.This is a wonderful opportunity to discover together the riches of our personal heritage in culture and experience, acquiring some new skills in sharing our faith in Jesus Christ. When I think of what it is we have to give out of our own story of discovering the transformative power of faith in Jesus, I remember Peter’s story, and the first time he said, “I can give you what
Bishop
I have” in Acts 3, the story of the healing of the lame man at the Beautiful Gate. What a powerful moment not only for the lame man, but for Peter, who now was so confident in his faith, he could give it away, and through him, God healed this man. Our story has such power, and my prayer for our day with Eric is that we will better learn how ‘to give away what we have.’ I hope you will join me so that we can continue to share the good news of Jesus far and wide. As always, we encourage you to bring teams from your congregations so that you may share the experience together. May you continue to be blessed with hope and eager anticipation this Advent season, longing for the coming of Christ! +Mary
