MARIKINA Marikina Heights, Marikina, Metro Manila, Philippines

The Site

Marikina is best known as the Shoe Capital region of the Philippines. It is famous for its high-quality handcrafted shoes that make. And also the home of the world’s largest pair of shoes certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. Marikina is an easy escape to the metropolitan hustle and bustle. The site is one of the barangay of Marikina which is the Marikina Heights. it is formerly Concepcion. Marikina Heights is the central part of the district, situated on the hills overlooking the former Marikina town. A place that is mix of a picturesque city because of its park and human scale statues.

Challenge

This location appears to be very selective for recreational space to have active and massive area to conider. Marikina Heights is associated primarily with a variety of services and goods offered around its area as a commercial center, and by trying to occupy an active park, it appears that the site has never distanced itself from transporelated issues, be it among transportation or pedestrians. People come from different places with different cultures. At the moment, it is fairly obvious that Marikina Heights creates a complex in which such differences may come into conflict.

Traffic Analysis OPPORTUNITIES

CONSTRAINTS

DECISIONS

There are few more streets that can be of help during rush hour. Most areas are light to moderate traffic as it is located in the residential area.

Traffic congestions caused by the schools near the site can cause inconvenience to the commuters, drivers and residents in the area. It can lead to lost of time, noise pollution and "road rage".

Spend time on an efficient public transit system like providing exclusive lanes and stops for public transportation. Make bike lanes and pedestrian pathways even safer to give people the confidence to choose walking and cycling over commuting for short distances.

On the other hand, the improper loading and unloading of the tricycles add to the traffic congestion around the site.

Route Map Analysis OPPORTUNITIES

CONSTRAINTS

DECISIONS

In every barangay in the Philippines, tricycles rather than jeepneys are the main mode of transportation- cheap, efficient, and essential. It can be of great help during morning rush or when a transportation system is needed immediately. It can go different stops and can unload directly to the specific place that you need.

Lack of enough loading and unloading area for the tricycles and jeepney around the area can cause traffic congestions.

Provision of loading and unloading area for the tricycles and jeepney to improve the quality of transportation system and a safer environment for the residents.

There are several roads in the barangay. Jeepneys are only allowed to pass by along the Bayan-Bayanan Ave and and Liwasang Kalayaan because most parts of the site are provided for the residents and the tricycles.

Vehicular Accessibility Analysis OPPORTUNITIES

CONSTRAINTS

DECISIONS

The tricycle that provides most of the transportation system in the site gives benefit to the residents as it lessen the traffic around the barangay. Other than that, it provides a more walkable and pedestrian friendly spaces in the area maximizing its potential to be a 15-minute city.

Before going to the terminal of the Jeepney, one must get a ride by tricycle.

- New public transportation facilities to allow the residents have access to different transportation system. - Road widening will increase the capacity of a traffic corridor and safer mobility. - Enhancement of traffic control and a traffic signal to ensure an orderly flow of traffic.

Along Bayanan-Bayanan Ave, a major road in the site, lacks a pedestian crossing. Major roads such as Liwasang Kalayaan, West Dr, East Dr, and Bayan Bayanan Ave lacks provision of bike and motor lane. Not enough loading and unloading station for tricycles.

Pedestrian Accesibility Analysis OPPORTUNITIES

CONSTRAINTS

DECISIONS

High numbers of commuters such as consumers, students, workers as well as local residents means that tricycles can get passengers easily.

There are no enough pedestrian crossing and stoplights for the residents. High speed, and traffic volume are the key factors influencing pedestrian crossing difficulty.

Enhancement of location and types of pedestrian crossing and providing a stoplight to ensure the safety of people.

The sounds made by users from the site's park serve as surveillance security for the site.

All of the parks serve no purpose other than to increase the unpleasant noise for those who seek peace and quiet.

Provide a separate park for senior citizens, a dog park, a yoga or exercise park, and a recreational park.

Natural Features Analysis OPPORTUNITIES

The majority of the vegetation on the property is found in parks in Marikina Heights, and it serves as a barrier in every space and road on the property. and it covers most of the pedestrian areas that serve as natural shading.

The existing creek on the site is poorly maintained and has negative effects that can hurt human health and the environment.

Create a job opportunity for tree maintenance and a project to plant more trees. so it can give natural cooling and shading to the site.
