QVM has the proximity to four city councils within walking distance, which means there are lots of potential customers/ users at the present and in the future.

QVM is a relatively more trading-oriented open space with set openning hours. When the market is closed, nothing really happens in the space. The carpark of QVM is also used inefficiently.

Non-patron Behaviour

QVM is easy to access either by tram or train. There are three tram stations surround QVM, one planned train station near Flagstaff Garden and one of the major transprotation junction Melbourne Central Station.

Despite that QVM is located in the heart of the city north, non-patron interaction with the market is remarkbly low. Most frequently only as a corridor connecting surrroundings.

WHAT HAPPENS IN FUTURE?

The square enables both public and private program, the open plaza in the north are open to community events and the closed edges attracted antisocial behaviour. Holding the city back from its goal of becoming a walkable city with a high quality network of street, lanes and urban spaces.

REVITALIZING CARPARK

Family H o use h ol d More residential projects are planned or under construction, mostly located in the north, west and southeast of the CBD. Population density will increase and apartment size are going to shrink. Urban dwelling gradually loses the feature of frontyard, backyard or even balcony. Losing these spaces limited dweller’s access to sunlight, fresh air and space for domestic recreational or gathering activities.

About 2/3 of the residents living in Melbourne city were born overseas, including immigrants, international students, oversea labours and so on. Most of them come to Melbourne alone and away from their family and friends, which can raise homesickness. Increasing amount of urban dwellers especially temporary residents are experiencing lonliness due to weak connection with others.

YARD FOR URBANISTS - Urban open yard for urban dwellers in compensation to the lost domestic open space. - Various programs stimulating yard in a house context integrate with civic square. - Opportunity for urban dwellers to get contact with nature. - Informal exercise space, improving physical health.

URBAN SPRAWLING & TRANSPORTATION NETWORK

With the population number growing 110,000 a year, Melbourne’s demand for public transport will grow. More developed tranportation network and technology can be imagined from the government.

COMMUNITY GATHERING SPACE

With that envisioned, public transport will have higher capacity and travelling routine will become shorter. Large carparks in the city are no longer necessary.

- Encourage connection with aquantaince. - Lower risk of getting mental health issue. - Place to held community events/festivals. - Foster sense of community.
