Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols?

Signs and symbols are a relatively formal, representational or a deductive way of showing the reality. Their creation may involve the designer’s personal cultural background and the reader need relevant knowledge to understand it. On the contrary, diagram allows easier readability even to viewers who has no relevant professional knowledge. It does not necessarily need to be metric or geometric information but spatial relationships such as circulation, meditation, accessbility, transparency and so on are often considered depends on how it deploys on an organisational maner.

Week One

Precedent Analysis

1. Simplistic cube

2. Interior formed by spheres and oval

3. Front view of the pavilion

4. East section of the pavilion

Fig.1. Root. ‘Radix’, 2016.

Radix pavillion is designed with simplistic solid geometery pattern based on the plan and section picture and referencing photos. So I chose to use a deductive method in terms of modelling. Started by building a cubic solid using fundamental commands, then placed the spheres and oval constructed accroding to the index provided to their place in the cube. Finally cut the spheres and oval out of the cube by using ‘Booleansplit’ tool.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use.

Herzberger suggests space should not solely designed to serve one function but also need to give play to its effectiveness. That is the reason why he put emphasis on intermediate space between public and private space and provides a large amount of examples of how threshold are being extrude and space are being effectively and alternatively used in his article. These concepts are also being showned in the practice of Radix pavilion deisgned by Aires Mateus. The reductive and simple form of the pavilion and its location sufficiently give rise to the diverse uses of the pavilion. The hollowed-out semi-spherical space divides the cube mainly into three seperate space and the changing heights of the space resulting from its form changes the way people meditate and circulate inside of the pavilion and their relationship with the public space outside of the pavilion. The fact that one of its spherical space is located besides water provides people a perfect space for private usage such as chatting.

Week Two

Isometric

South-West isometric with surrounding context

This isometric is generated from the south-west direction as from this angle I recognize it gives a direct impression to the basic shape and form of the pavilion and how it is constructed by giving indications of interior structure. Moreover, the simplified surrounding environment are also shown in the isometric to suggest the context of design for the pavilion. As there is no complicate form and shape in this pavilion design, I chose to model the interior space and surrounding context in detail to suggest the pavilion’s main design concept. As I went throught the process of modelling, I found the variation of heights of the interior is formed due to the shape of spheres. And though sometimes there is a hollowd hole in the construction, it does not neccessarily high enough for adult to get through. So the changing height also create a definition of age as children may easily get through while adults could not. In addition, the fact that this pavilion is placed beside river limited people’s circulation around this pavilion, and further creating a sense of peace around the constrution.

Week Two Diagrams

Circulation paths

Primary Circulation Space

South-west Isometric 1:110

North-east Isometric 1:110

This set of diagrams explores the theme of space from the south-west isometric view. The first diagram is the perceived volume of space which is the three semi-spheres had been cut out from the cube, the second is the interior surface that has been created by the spheres to indicate the variation of height inside the pavilion and how does it affect people’s path shown in the circulation diagram.

For these diagrams, I mainly mimic the way how people will move and conduct their activities due to different time of the day inside of the pavilion by firstly demonstrate shadows in Rhino using the pavilion’s actual location (Venice), then, how will people conduct activites in the pavilion related to the location of shadows. Finally the main path that people can circulates in the pavilion which is the accessible spcae.

Appendix

Modelling Process

1. Build a rectangular solid with base square length 8 meter, and height 4 meters by using solid tool.

3. Cut the spheres and oval out by using Booleansplit command, and the basic structure of the pavilion is formed.

4. I chose to model the interior details inside the pavilion aswell by firstly draw a line and align them by using arraypolar command, then project the lines to the surface by using project command.

2. Construct two spheres and an oval according to the index provided in the plan, and place them to the right location according to section diagram.

First version of Main Activities diagram I discard this version since dots are too specific while we can not be sure about who and when will them be their and what are they doing, so replace this with shapes and applied transparency to the greys to let the overlapping parts more significant.
