JOB: TOURIST GUIDE Job profile: Tourist guides show visitors around places of interest, such as towns and cities, historic buildings, gardens, religious sites or museums and art galleries. You will need excellent communication skills in this job. You will also need to have a good memory for facts, figures and events. If you are good at public speaking, and are interested in history and the arts, this could be the ideal job for you. There are not any specific entry requirements to get into this work but many employers would ask for GCSE passes (UK), particularly in English and maths. There are courses available in tourist guiding that could help you develop the skills you would need. Career options: Work in one place, do touristic tours or work in a whole country at different places. But be prepared that tourist guiding is often a seasonal work so you are kind of independent and you have to organize a lot by yourself. Many tourist guides are self-employed. If you have experience in jobs that are related to the touristic branche it would be an advantage for getting better tours. If you are attending to some courses by the Institute of Tourist Guiding you could come up to level four and then you would be a tourist guide around a wider geographical area, and you would have learned a lot about tour planning and management skills. You will be always learning more and if you are changing your route or your working place you will get to know so much more about them. I think that it is interesting to learn so much about new places, the culture and history and this job is a good opportunity to travel around.
