Created by Sarah Guenther, M.S. Communication & Leadership Graduate Assistant

A message from our ga ... H ello everyone! My name is Sarah Guenther and I’m the new ComLead Graduate Assistant. It is so wonderful to be here at Canisius College working with such incredibly bright and talented people! I graduated from Buffalo State College in May 2013 with a dual major in public relations and Spanish. For the past year, I worked at The Muscular Dystrophy Association and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, both successful national, nonprofit organizations. I spent most of my time at these organizations fundraising and planning campaigns to raise money for these two important causes. I truly have a passion for nonprofit work and hope to someday start my very own endeavor! I’m currently a full-time student at Canisius and working part-time in the M.S. Communication & Leadership program. As a GA, I assist Dr. Hartman with various projects for the department, and also update the program’s blog, website and social media pages with the most current trending news and information. I’m always open to any and all feedback, so please comment on my posts or send me an email at guenthes@ my.canisius.edu. Thanks for taking the time to read a little bit about me. Hope to see you around campus!

Sarah

Class discussions were enriched by the variety of experiences my classmates had to share. From company executives to recent bachelors degree graduates, the program encourages students to share their own perspectives to better understand how the communication and leadership concepts exist in the “real world” environment we work in each day.”

“The ComLead program helped build a solid foundation for my professional growth in the non-profit sector. Classes not only built a theoretical framework, they allowed students to practice with existing non-profits, building a portfolio of work that I look back to in my career. These partnerships also helped build invaluable connections with professionals who I still keep in contact with, and who are supportive of my growth in the field.” Irma Roman-Tyszko Senior Recruiter Fisher-Price

Faculty’s

Sentiments on Service Dr. Dahlberg and service-learning

Dr. Dahlberg’s Case Studies in IMC course this past summer worked with the echo Art Fair. One of their goals was to attract people from the suburbs to venture out to the city for the art festivals.

How did students feel about this type of learning? “This was a fun class. I think that echo Art Fair being a real client gave me a strong taste of what it is like to work in this field. Not to mention what we created in class was something incredibly substantial and could be readily used by the folks at echo.” -Matthew Gorczyca, Dr. Dahlberg’s Graduate Assistant

Dr. Foster’s personal service experiences Dr. Foster serves on the Marketing Communications Committee for the Boy Scouts of Niagara and has recently been appointed to the Board of Directors for Mission Valor. Dr. Foster also works with service learning partners in her undergraduates courses.

What is service to Dr. Foster? “My involvement with these organizations has been a learning experience for us both. I’ve not only been able to teach them something, but they’ve taught me as well.” “Many people think of service as having to do physical work, whether that means using their hands and building, digging, painting, etc. But there are lots of ways to do service. I like that I can provide my professional skills to organizations and that I’m still doing service”

Neil Melbrod and non-profits Neil Melbrod retired as an adjunct faculty member this past spring. He is a firm believer in service-learning and has always taught his classes by partnering with neighborhood nonprofits. Autism Services, Inc., Hamburg Counseling Service, Inc., Special Spaces Buffalo, Legal Services for the Elderly of WNY, Inc., and Buffalo Peacemakers

Why is service-learning important? “I believe in John Dewey’s theory of education that you learn by doing. My students had the opportunity to better understand theoretical concepts about fundraising and nonprofits by actually creating materials for local nonprofit organizations, based upon what they learned in the classroom. By partnering with a nonprofit organization over the semester, the topics we discussed in class became real for them. They were able to assess the current needs of the nonprofit they were working with and develop strategies and materials to help the organization achieve their goals. As a result of the service learning experience, students were much better prepared about what to expect as they went out into the nonprofit world.”
