DYE WITHOUT DYING

Instead of using chemicals I try to found out what options there are to make your own original fabrics without polluting the envoirment. The first part is about a few natural dye experiments. I also put in some beige/brown experiments from my last project which include acorns. Unfortunately it’s winter now so I could barly find things in nature, so I went to the supermarket for the ingredients. Most of the fabrics I used for dyeing are full cottons, but I also used wool and even fabric with synthetics. I pre-stained the fabrics with soda and aluin to see if the fabrics react different to the same dyes. Being experimental with natural products. Visualizing the fabrics in digital products with CLO 3D.Make the untouchable touchable by giving it a realistic feeling. Technology in combination with handcraft. I try to make the world more sustainable with both physical and digital techniques I did this project because i have to think different and out of the box. It triggers me to be more creative because this is project is full of experimenting en trying new things.

TEA I used 1 liter water with 4 tea bags for the dye bath.

The tea gave a comparable color as the acorns, but with the iron sulfate I didn’t became as dark.It turned out the lightest. The bottom image is a combination of tea, cacao powder and iron sulfate, with the tea as base.

EXPERIMENTS FOR SWEATER First I pre-stained the sweat fabric one hour in cooking soda water. I cooked the fabric 3 times 10 minutes in the dye bath. When I put the dyed fabrics for a few seconds in a pan iron sulfate it got darker.

BROWN/BEIGE

ACORNS I used 1 liter water with 43 gram acorns for the dye bath.

When the acorn weren’t ripe anymore, the color turned out like a beige with a red undertone. But afer I put it in vinegar the color became more brown, a more intens beige. The fabric that I pres-stained in iron sulfate turned out brown, but lighter than the one I put in the iron sulfate after the acorns.

CACAO POWDER I used 1 liter water with 500 gram cacao powder for the dye bath.

The fabric came out a bit spotty. When I mixed the bath with tea it turned out less spotty but also lighter. With de iron sulfate you also see that the cocao powder tea mix turned out lighter.
