Planning an economical trip Shop around! Call SEVERAL airlines, train stations, etc. Special rates and discounts are often available, particularly if traveling during off-season. If

possible, reserve a year in advance and pay early for the special rates. (This may mean a no-frills flight, however.) If it’s not necessary, don’t stay at the name hotels. (Unless someone else is paying for it!) There are plenty of bed-and-breakfast inns and guest homes that’s reasonably priced and have local atmosphere. (This may not be everyone’s cup of tea, though.) When putting together your wardrobe, it saves time to pack several basic, comfortable outfits that’s mostly solid-colored and interchangeable. And bring comfortable shoes! (Not only for walking, but the stress of being someplace else is reduced a bit, I believe.)

If you know that your time is limited, determine in advance what business and sightseeing is absolutely essential and do those first. (Prepare a list of must-sees and contacts.) Take the bus round-trip, if you can stand it and have the time. If the location’s close enough, car travel’s better. Get a clear, easy-to-read map. Prices are much cheaper if you avoid the swanky downtown shops; Seek out the bargain markets. If a certain site requires two or more means of public transportation to get there, watch out. It may take half a day of coming and going! And your mood WILL be affected. If in doubt about the access to a place, consider a car (riding with

Unless you have money to waste, they’re extremely overpriced, particularly in the major cities. If you’re able to, try to arrive at your destination at least an hour early; this’ll give you time to relax, freshen up, and get acclimated to your temporary “home.” Also, when returning, try to leave THE

DAY BEFORE you’re due back at work, are scheduled for an appointment, etc. For inexpensive eating throughout your trip, there are several options: if you’re able to, you can bring one or a few made-at-home bag lunches, look for and seek out food cart vendors, or stay at a hotel that offers kitchenettes. Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania: A winter wonderland Bundle up and come experience a Pennsylvania winter. Whether you want to enjoy the exhilaration of gravity on more than 400 ski slopes and trails, take to the woods on a

snowmobile, or simply just ice skate or fish on a frozen pond or lake, the Commonwealth offers an abundance of cold weather thrills and memories that will last a lifetime.

Both visitors and residents alike can avoid the winter doldrums by taking advantage of a wide variety of recreational opportunities in the Pennsylvania wilderness. The Commonwealth’s state parks and forests are open year-round, and once the snow hits and the temperature drops, these areas become winter playgrounds for guests of all ages. Providing opportunities for skiing, both downhill and cross-country, to snowboarding, snowtubing and sledding, the Commonwealth is the third

largest ski destination in the East. There are over 300 miles of marked cross-country ski trails in the state’s 2.1 million acres of state forests, but visitors are free to ski wherever there is snow. For more information on state parks that have sledding hills, call 1-888-PA-PARKS. There are hundreds of miles of trails for snowmobiles in Pennsylvania. Most state parks offer designated snowmobile trails for exploration while others provide access to trails on state forest land. During the winter, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) activates a snowmobile hotline. For weekly updates, call (717) 787-5651.

Ice fishing has an allure all its own. It’s the perfect activity for those seeking peace and quiet yet invigorating at the same time. Pennsylvania state parks have many lakes for ice fishing and all permit anglers on the ice as long as the ice is at least 4 inches thick and they wear a life jacket. Guests who would rather glide across the ice than wait for a nibble should dress warmly and lace up those ice skates. State parks in each region of the state have designated special areas for ice-skating and monitor the ice thickness for safety. Visit www.WinterinPa.com for more information.

Florida – Drenched in sunshine Florida offers you Orlando and Tampa’s theme park magic, or relaxation on the endless miles of Florida’s Gulf or Gold Coast beaches and our famous Key West. Florida boasts 1,200 miles of coastline. Both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico - dotted by many islands and inlets - lap against its shores, making it a haven for watersports enthusiasts. Colorful sailboats head for the high seas. Yachts and motorboats

ply the ocean or inland waterways. Windsurfers and water-skiers play side by side. The states inland water are populated with freshwater fish, marine, migratory and exotic species. Lots of sunshine means year-round sports. So take a swing at golf, brush up on your backhand, or pick up a game of beach volleyball. Golf is a big part of Florida. The state boasts nearly 1,100 courses with layouts by famous designers.

Florida has an overwhelming array of foods that are just about guaranteed to suit everyone’s taste and price range. There’s succulent steak at five-star restaurants, seafood with an ocean view, and loads of tasty ethnic fare. Dig in and enjoy! With all that Florida has to offer, her signature is still “beaches.” The words “Florida” and “beaches” are practically synonymous, but Florida’s beaches are as different from one

another as night and day! The 24-mile stretch of Emerald Coast beaches of northwest Florida remind you of sugary, soft and snowy white sand, glistening against emerald green waters. The coastline of Clearwater and St. Petersburg take on a different atmosphere. The sands are still gleaming white, but the texture varies slightly. Sanibel Island’s beaches have captured more varieties of seashells than anywhere else in North America. Pure white sands prevails on Florida’s Gulf of Mexico coastline. The Atlantic shorelines of Ft. Lauderdale and Palm Beach glitter

golden in the warm sun rays. The wide, hard-packed stretch of sand on Daytona Beach has invited visitors to drive its 23 miles. New York

Enjoy a Winter Getaway with Outdoor Adventure in New York While winter may be a time to nestle in and enjoy the comforts of a warm fire or hot cocoa, it is also a prime time in New York to enjoy all the season has to offer

outdoors. Whether it’s the something for every taste and extreme thrills of downhill skiing budget. or snowboarding or a quiet skate New York has more downhill on a frozen lake, New York offers ski areas than any other state in the union. With over 50 across the state, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for. Many offer alternatives including snowboarding and snowtubing, and ski vacation packages as well. Another way to hit the trails is by snowmobiling. Even some roads become designated for snowmobiles when the snow starts to pile up. Find clubs and trail maps online or check with local tourism bureaus for specifics. Several winter resort towns offer dog sledding rides. A common method of

transportation in snowbound areas, dog sledding was even at the first Lake Placid Olympics. Highly anticipated races are held in the Adirondack region of the state each year. Check the calendar of events on our site or that of the region you are visiting for dates and times. With a little skill and the proper tools, winter anglers catch a variety of fish; primarily perch, sunfish, pickerel, northern pike and walleye. Ice fishing opportunites can be found throughout the state and season, but whatever the day you decide to go ice fishing, be sure to prepare accordingly and check the ice for safety. From a frozen lake to commercial rink to city park, ice skating is a great way to stay

in shape through the long winter. Whether you’re celebrating the holidays at Rockefeller Center or enjoying the quiet of a secluded frozen lake, skating can get the whole family involved. Find groomed trails and check trail conditions before venturing out on cross country skis. Another great exercise when winter is in full effect, cross country skiing is both easy and accessible, not requiring a lot of gear or specific terrain as downhill skiing does. Whatever your choice, you’ll find an opportunity to enjoy it when you visit New York. For additional information visit www.GuestQuest.com and click on the New York page for travel and tourism related links or check out our Calendar of Events tab.
