Making a long road trip with children by: C.S. Mackay This is the year that you are going to take a thousand mile road trip. It would be fun and enjoyable with just your spouse, but now your family includes others. Those others include a preteen ten year old that is already developing a teen attitude. Also included is an over energetic eight-year-old son that thinks his purpose in life is to tease both of his sisters. Last of all there is that sweet four-year-old ball of fire that has determined that she is in charge. On the top of your list of challenges is the item to make this trip and be sane when you return home. Everything will be fine getting things ready and even after you arrive at your destination. It is those hours in between that have you worried. Back when you were a little kid your parents had to grin and bear

it. They played games to keep you entertained and searched license plates for a new state. At the end of the trip they were too tired to enjoy their stay. They just rested up for the return trip and a rerun of the previous trip, arriving home exhausted. What a vacation? This will not happen to you if you are willing to take advantage of the new car video technology. With the introduction of car videos children can enjoy the trip with some of their favorite videos. There are several types available on the market now. There are the standard mount to the ceiling models. Now there are hang over the seat models with ear phones so that each child can have their own if necessary and these are moveable from seat to seat. Also, available are head rests with video screens built in them

that can replace your present head rests. Now there are even car videos to put on sun visors or on the dash. With this car video technology you can now take your children’s favorite videos and let them play them over and over and it will not drive you crazy because they have ear buds. This means that you can

still carry on a conversation with someone and not always be interrupted with the inevitable “Are We There Yet”. By the way ipods and MP3 players will do the same for your teenager. I can attest to the above because I just got off a road trip of 16 hours with these three youngsters and four adults. There

were very few problems and parents and grandparents were just tired from the ride not tired from fighting. I personally felt that the portable video was best because we could shift it between seats and then the unoccupied child did what we used to do play games.

South Carolina coast, miles of sun & surf A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head, while expanded air travel has added more international travelers in recent years. Reliable, decent weather year-round and a burgeoning menu of attractions and

amenities continue to drive that growth in popularity. Starting from the north, Myrtle Beach anchors the 60-mile crescent of shoreline known as the Grand Strand. Characterized by long, sweeping stretches of sand and surf, the Strand offers both bustling and less-boisterous choices for plopping that plastic chaise lounge and propping the umbrella. In Myrtle Beach proper, hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then

Create memories close to home with an Indiana vacation Looking for something to do a little closer to home this year? Looking to make your dollar stretch further, but still create Spring Break memories? Try on these fun, semi-outdoor, wear-yourself-out activities. Go caving - Indiana has three Marengo Cave, Bluespring Caverns and Squire Boone Caverns. All offer tours daily, but each offers something a little extra - try spelunking (cave

exploring) at Marengo, overnight at Bluespring or explore the village above ground at Squire Boone. Go fishing - on Lake Michigan. Bring your pole and charter a boat for a big catch. You still might need a jacket though for those cold lake-effect winds. Afterwards, grab an Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore guidebook at the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center, then play

on the beach, climb the dunes, hike the trail system and take a guided nature tour. Go Geocaching - grab a treasure map (your GPS device) and look for treasure. Some of Indiana’s hot spots are in South (Mitchell) and North (Shipshewana, Warsaw & Plymouth). Find more at Geocaching.com. Don’t have a GPS device? Northern Indiana’s destinations will provide one.

Go explore - at a state park. Indiana State Parks offer lots to explore, places to stay and fun things to learn. Brown County State Park offers indoor water fun, Turkey Run State Park has great hiking trails and Spring Mill State Park offers historical village exploration. Go play (and learn) - These fun, hands-on museums are sure to impress: Terre Haute Children’s Museum, Science Central (Fort

Wayne), The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, CMoe (Evansville) and kidscommons (Columbus). Whatever the experience, you’ll love restarting your Spring Break engine in Indiana! Ohio

An abundance of cultural activities and events The rural charm of Wayne County’s rolling hills, lush woods, and scenic farmland is only the beginning of the offerings available to visitors and residents. An abundance of cultural activities and events make Wayne County a great destination any time of the year. Known as the “Gateway to Amish Country,” Wayne and the surrounding counties are home to the world’s largest Amish population. Famous for their beautiful quilts and high-quality craftsmanship, the Amish people are also known for their peaceful ways and timeless lifestyle. A large number of restaurants, shops and stores feature authentic Amish products, from food to furniture. Our Neighbors Ohio was originally home to several tribes of Native American Indians including Mingo, Delaware, Wyandot, Ottawa,

Shawnee, and Miami. Many settlers from the east began immigrating to Ohio, particularly in the Western Reserve after the War of 1812. Pennsylvanians dominated the population growth, among them several religious communities including Mennonites, Amish, Dunkards (German Baptist Brethren) and Moravians. They were joined by other members of their faith directly from Germany and Switzerland as well, giving a unique flavor to Wayne and surrounding counties. Today this region is home to the largest community of Amish. Because of their profound religious beliefs, they have elected to live as close to their founding principles as possible, forgoing many aspects of technology and modern conveniences common to the modern world. Their self reliance and work values are visible in their community barn raisings, threshing rings, quilting groups and more.

Amish farms, one-room school houses and their distinct black horse-drawn buggies are familiar sights around Wayne County. A favorite destination of visitors and residents alike is one of the many Amish-style restaurants that feature authentic cooked meals, including noodles, apple fritters, and deep dish fruit pies. Visitors also enjoy the quality, hand-crafted products the Amish are known for. Fine wood furniture, hand-stitched quilts, and carvings are just a few of the items visitors often take home from their visit to Amish country. The Amish people do not wish to be photographed due to their religious beliefs and will not pose for pictures. However, they are friendly people willing and often eager to speak about their unique lifestyles. Visitors who allow themselves to enter into the atmosphere of the Amish community will gain a new perspective on modern life and a respect for their desires to maintain a simple way of life.

Whether you are visiting Wayne County now, or contemplating a visit in the future, the Wayne County Convention and Visitors Bureau is dedicated to making your stay a pleasant and memorable experience.

Cultural Heritage of Amish Country Behalt, the unique 265-ft. painted mural-in-the-round, attracts visitors world-wide to the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center in Berlin, Ohio. One of only three cycloramas in the United States, Behalt is the masterpiece of the late international artist Heinz Gaugel. In a guided tour, visitors learn the story of the Amish and Mennonites as presented on the colorful mural. The oil-on-canvas painting uses distinctive artistic techniques of line and color to illustrate multiple stories within a vast timeline.

In addition, guests enjoy a video introduction to the region, home of world’s largest Amish community. A Pioneer Barn with restored Conestoga wagon and a one-room schoolhouse presenting Amish education are also offered. The bookstore, gift shop and displays support the study of heritage and culture.
