Making a long road trip with children by: C.S. Mackay This is the year that you are going to take a thousand mile road trip. It would be fun and enjoyable with just your spouse, but now your family includes others. Those others include a preteen ten year old that is already developing a teen attitude. Also included is an over energetic eight-year-old son that thinks his purpose in life is to tease both of his sisters. Last of all there is that sweet four-year-old ball of fire that has determined that she is in charge.
On the top of your list of challenges is the item to make this trip and be sane when you return home. Everything will be fine getting things ready and even after you arrive at your destination. It is those hours in between that have you worried. Back when you were a little kid your parents had to grin and bear it. They played games to keep you entertained and searched license plates for a new state. At the end of the trip they were too tired to enjoy their stay. They just rested up for the return trip and a rerun of
the previous trip, arriving home exhausted. What a vacation? This will not happen to you if you are willing to take advantage of the new car video technology. With the introduction of car videos children can enjoy the trip with some of their favorite videos. There are several types available on the market now. There are the standard mount to the ceiling models. Now there are hang over the seat models with ear phones so that each child can have their own if necessary and these are moveable from seat to seat. Also,
available are head rests with video screens built in them that can replace your present head rests. Now there are even car videos to put on sun visors or on the dash. With this car video technology you can now take your children’s favorite videos and let them play them over and over and it will not drive you crazy because they have ear buds. This means that you can still carry on a conversation with someone and not always be interrupted with the inevitable “Are We There Yet”. By the way
ipods and MP3 players will do the same for your teenager. I can attest to the above because I just got off a road trip of 16 hours with these three youngsters and four adults. There were very few problems and parents and grandparents were just tired from the ride not tired from fighting. I personally felt that the portable video was best because we could shift it between seats and then the unoccupied child did what we used to do play games.

North Carolina
North Carolina: Land of diversity, culture, history and charm From the highest mountain peaks east of the Mississippi to the tallest natural sand dune system in the eastern United States, North Carolina takes diversity to new heights. Across the state, visitors will find a rich cultural heritage, abundant history and modern cities. And 600 North Carolina golf courses provide varied terrain and challenges suitable for golfers of all skill levels. The 300-plus miles of North Carolina coastline are dotted with picturesque lighthouses. A chain of barrier islands along the northern coast beckons visitors to familiar places such as Kitty Hawk, Duck and Cape Hatteras. Along the southern shoreline lie the historic Cape Fear Coast, Crystal Coast and Brunswick Islands. Each area has a unique style and offers spectacular
beaches, events and activities in a relaxed atmosphere. History abounds along the coast, where ships sailed and colonies formed centuries ago. Historic Bath is North Carolina’s oldest town and celebrates its tri-centennial throughout 2005. Visitors can enjoy Beaufort, with buildings dating back to the mid-1700s, and Pine Knoll Shores, home to one of North Carolina’s three aquariums (the other aquariums are in Fort Fisher and Roanoke Island). Tryon Palace Historic Site and Gardens, a collection of elegant Georgian buildings in New Bern, was constructed in 1770 as a residence for Royal Governor William Tryon and served as the state’s first capital. Wilmington, which today sets the stage for many film and television productions, once set the stage
for significant events in the Civil War. Besides intriguing historical attractions, central North Carolina boasts beautiful countryside and exciting city life. Charlotte is the state’s largest city and is known for its offerings of fine cuisine, cultural activities, nightlife and professional sporting events. Just north of the city, shopping takes on a whole new meaning at Concord Mills. At Lowe’s Motor Speedway, also in Concord, race fans thrill to NASCAR’s best. Many of the sport’s drivers and race shops are located here, along with museums and tours dedicated to the sport of racing. The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro is regarded as one of the nation’s finest zoos and is also the largest walk-through, natural-habitat zoo in the United States. In nearby Seagrove,
where the earth is natural red clay, some of the world’s best potters ply their craft, as they have for more than 200 years. Charming small towns may beckon you to stay, but higher reaches call you westward where the mountains rise to meet the sky. The Blue Ridge Parkway, celebrating it's 75th anniversary, winds its way past scenic overlooks, state parks, national forests, picnic areas, campgrounds and some of North Carolina’s most spectacular hiking trails. Fishing, canoeing, whitewater rafting and camping are perfect ways to enjoy natural mountain wonders. So is an early summer visit to Roan Mountain, the world’s largest natural gardens of crimson-purple rhododendron.
ATLANTIC BEACH, NC
Carolina/Kure Beaches, Topsail Island: Two great locations for all your vacation needs! The Cape Fear region, located just south of Wilmington, is all about fun. Including the time-honored small towns of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, the area is North Carolina’s premier coastal vacation destination. With activities that range from golf, surfing, jet skiing and kayaking to deep-sea fishing, putt-putt and wind surfing, it’s like one giant amusement park, from sunrise to sunset.
Close to quaint Southport, it’s easy to reach (right on I-40), affordable (compare our prices to the Outer Banks) and family friendly. But that’s not all. A little farther up the coast is Topsail Island, featuring beautiful, quiet beaches sandwiched between the placid Intracoastal Waterway and the dazzling Atlantic Ocean. At either location, there’s something for everyone, whether
Spring and summer festivals provide an opportunity to enjoy foot-tapping mountain music, regional cuisine and, of course, famous North Carolina handmade crafts. Asheville is city-center to mountain activity and boasts numerous arts and crafts shops, galleries and museums. Two of the most interesting homes in America – George Vanderbilt’s Biltmore Estate, a 250-room French chateau, and Carl Sandburg’s Connemara, where the renowned author published one third of his works – are located in the Asheville area. From beaches to mountains, North Carolina has something for every taste. For additional information check out www.visitnc.com or call 1-800-VISIT NC for a North Carolina Travel Package.
