RETHINKING WASTE

01

CENTRE FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT

Year 2021 Area 7.4 acres Type Academic Thesis project Site Location Perungudi, Chennai

Solid waste management is a major problem for many urban local bodies in India, where urbanization, industrialization and economic growth have resulted in increased municipal solid waste generation per person. In India, Chennai is the third largest waste producing city. The main goal of this project is to educate and spread environmental awareness amongst the general public. The environmental learning centre hopes to demonstrate the implications of their day-to-day activities such that they can be mindful of their actions.

GARDEN CURVE

02

HIGHRISE APPARTMENTS

Year 2017 Area 6.63 acres Type Academic project Site Location Crowford, Trichy

‘Garden Curve’ is a residential building on a plot of 6.63 acres. Most of the city’s inhabitants have been used to living in individual houses with private gardens and open spaces. As a result of this, the few high-rise residential buildings that have been constructed in this city still remain partially unoccupied due to the lack of private open spaces in them. As a response to this need, the apartments have been designed to occupy a complete floor opening out on all sides with each room. Temperatures in Trichy vary from 34ºC to 38ºC in the summer months. The extended decks for each room shelter the internal spaces from the excessive heat in the summer while becoming landscaped outdoor extensions to the rooms.

MULTI SPECIALITY HOSPITAL

Year 2018 Area 6.3 acres Type Academic project Site Location Srirangam, Trichy

‘Heilen Ort’ is a Multi speciality Hospital that is designed for 200 beds. It addresses different branches of medicine under one roof and also offers surgical treatment and diagnostic services. The main goal of this project is to understand the services of a multispeciality hospital and provide an unthreatening comfortable and stress-free environment for the patients and visitors. The design of an appropriate building facade plays a very important role in healing in healthcare projects. “Designing smart building envelopes translate into both tangible and intangible benefits. The tangible benefits can be, a reduction in consumption of building materials, energy, and operation and maintenance costs. The intangible benefits are better assistance in patients’ recovery and healing along with a reduction in stress and improvement in the overall healthcare environment. The facade of this project protects the people occupying the building and plays a major role in regulating the indoor environment.
