ALBERGO DIFFUSO Palazzolo Acreide, Sicily Building Technology Studio
Palazzolo Acreide is a small city in the province of Syracuse and it was founded in 664 a. C. A new city grew up after 1963 earthquake at the south east of the medieval city. The population has gradually declined during 1900 and in the last decades. Palazzolo Acreide is at the center of many touristic routes of South-Eastern Sicily, therefore, a privileged base for tourists wishing to visit the surrounding areas. As there are new generations of tourists, characterized by new needs, and new types of tourism, new proposals are expected. Among the several offers and models of touristic hospitality, it was decided to analyze and describe the most innovative and cutting-edge formula of the Italian touristic panorama, able to focus on this relationship: the ”Albergo Diffuso”. An Albergo Diffuso isn’t made to relaunch uninhabited villages. An Albergo Diffusi is used to revive villages at risk of neglect, but not abandoned. It should rather serve to hold down depopulation. The Albergo Diffuso is a facility which offers traditional hotel services and is located in the territory with the aim of improving the value of the environment of the smaller towns. The Albergo Diffuso has a common zero environmental impact, since its creation stems from the restore of apartments and houses belonging to the existing local housing stock. The aim of the restoration is to readjust properties for the guests respecting the authentic architectural style of the resort, to immerge the visitor in a real community atmosphere. Tourism can play an important role to support the sustainability and recovery of the local dimension. To do this, a change of offers through the development of new tourisms and new forms of hospitality is needed.

The Scalo Farini, an old railway yard, is located at the north entrance of Milan, near the Garibaldi Station. The intervention area as 106 acres (43 hectares) of railways and old industrial buildings today constitutes an obstacle for the city expansion to the north. It is intended to provide this dodgy area with a new centrality. The opportunity provided by the sale of the railway yard should be used to change attitudes and update situations. The project is described by the conversion, of this site, into an area of mixed-use. The residential and commercial areas are developed along the perimeter of the lot. The idea is to sew the edges of the already existing urbanity with the new intervention. At the center a vast pond follows the longitudinal development of the tracks. The containers of public activities (market, library, theater and education center) overlook the water surface. Water, a vital element for the old Milan, today it is very lacking. Navigli, the ancient channels, are the only elements of water for this city, and today great attractors for urban life. The project proposal wants to give to the city a new urban vision, more ralated with nature, sustainable transportations and where citizens can practice water activities as rowing, swimming and telesking.

The Toma Copas is a small bar, “tomar una copa” means have a drink, especially outdoors in the warm summer evenings. Valencia has a beautiful seafront promenade bordering immense beaches of fine sand. The Paseo Maritimo, very well connected thanks to the many bars and restaurants where you can taste the famous Valencian paella. On summer evenings, the Paseo Maritimo becomes the heart of the “movida valenciana” because of the numerous clubs and discos. The project proposes a volume of 9.2 x 6:06 m in height, which organizes the interior space into two longitudinal portions: one side toilets and tables on the other a big staircase that leads to a higher level and at the same time, describes the bar area below. Externally it looks like a large light box relied on the middle of the Paseo Maritimo. The coating wicker produces a lattice that allows you to glimpse both inside and outside. The atmosphere is shaded and ventilated at the same time. The height of the container reaches 6 meters, using the maximum allowed length of the barrel. The structure is described by a system of cane Guayaquil, with rectangular modules of 2,6 x2, 8 meters with braces positioned in the upper part. The joints between the pipes, columns, beams and stringers are made with bolts and fasteners. The interior of the TomaCopa is dominated by the large staircase, which, apart from serving as a link to the second level, it works as a tribuna-mirador, oriented towards the sea.

VIVIENDA COLECTIVA CABANYAL Valencia, Spain Taller 3
The Cabanyal is the seaside district of Valencia. In the early 1600s this area concentrated around 40 barracas and fishermen’s houses, of low quality. From 24 July 1998, the district is threatened by a proposed extension of Avenida Blasco Ibáñez, destroying 1,651 homes, dividing the area into two parts. The Cabanyal is a “barrio” in demographic decline (in the last forty years the population has decreased by 35%), the elderly, with a large number of mononuclear units (as a result of the aging process), more and more linked to tourism. The traditional activities related to fishing and the harbor are almost completely gone. The population, mostly born in the city or in the same area, however, continues to remain deeply rooted in the district. The Comisión de la Universitat de València proposes the development of programs for the improvement of public spaces and services and housing proposals to attract new residents and make more “young” the neighborhood. The hope is to trigger a regeneration of the area. “Es necesaria la reducción del grado de crispación social y de la misma manera la consecución de una solución consensuada para el futuro del barrio” The project Vivienda Colectiva fits into this urban context. The housing extended volume, on one side, it raises and become a new landmark capturing the view of the sea. A huge bar, open spaces and offices are located on the upper floors. Three types of houses, two of which are duplex, varying in size and distribution, are designed for specific users. All apartments have a double facing east-west, following the direction of the wind, thus responding to the need for ventilation and natural cooling in summer. The ground floor hosts the house entrances, businesses, music school and library. A longitudinal square is spread over a slight depression that gathered a public space, future theater of religious festivals and musical events.

DIPLOMA WORK Abstract Cluj Napoca contrACTIONS landscape urban strategies for a shrinking city with Enrico Cigolotti professor: Gennaro Postiglione
economic decline
Our research starts from the observation of a phenomenon which that arouses great interest: vacancy and decline of many urban areas. The analysis we made in the fi rst part of our work tries to defi ne causes and macro-trajectories of this process. In order to clarify this tendency we needed to study demographic curves, economic previsions, determining contact between different cities experiencing a shrinkage. Through a deep analysis of two specifics case study, we passed from causes to consequences underlining diffi culties in administration and everyday life in a declining city. We reviewed several interventions, acting on diff erent scales, showing possible design solutions for a peaceful cohabitation with this phenomenon. The design exercise aims an intervention on a shrinking city in a European area which is experiencing a big demographic decline for economical and political reasons. During the last years, Cluj-Napoca and the entire Romania are going through a mass migration in favor of more advanced countries. Our proposal arises in a visionary way or maybe in an excessively realistic one: we tried to find functions for some vacant spaces, discovering a sociality and a cooperation between citizens; two elements which are nowadays lost. The program, entitled Vacant Land Social Lab, was inspired by a study of the Pennsylvania University and it shows how these interventions have benefits in general on economy and public health. The resulting projects are eight little interventions in a part of the city that we called “urban strip. Interventions with low budget, but with a big impact, working on the dimension of landscape, on events or on some little tools, which are able to change the sense of a place and our perception of it.
