HISTORY

La sabana de Bogotá fue asiento del pueblo Muisca. Los indios Muiscas, hábiles artesanos y formidables orfebres, dominaban complejas técnicas para moldear el oro. Un ejemplo de su extraordinaria creatividad es la BALSA MUISCA, que representa una de las ceremonias que dieron origen a la leyenda de EL DORADO. Esta leyenda motivó la aventura de los conquistadores españoles a estas tierras; entre ellos a GONZALO JIMÉNEZ DE QUESADA, quien descubrió la sabana de Bogotá y fundó la ciudad el 6 de Agosto de 1.538, con el nombre de “Santa Fe de Bogotá”. El choque primero y la fusión después de las dos culturas; la española y la indígena, dieron origen al mestizaje racial y cultural, que es una de las características de la ciudad de Bogotá. Alrededor del poblado, se fue desarrollando la ciudad y lo que hoy es el barrio la Candelaria, se convierte en el sector mas representativo de la Bogotá Colonial. Al caminar por sus estrechas calles, observar las casonas o Iglesias, se puede apreciar el estilo español de los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII, que nos recuerdan el glorioso pasado. Luego vino la independencia de Colombia, el 20 de Julio de 1.810 y con la República, la ciudad se fue transformando poco a poco, copiando otros estilos arquitectónicos y mezclándose con el original, hasta llegar a la Bogotá de hoy. Bogotá D.C. se ha convertido en un importante centro educativo, cultural, de salud, financiero y de negocios en el ámbito nacional e internacional. Su clima, museos, galerías de arte, centros comerciales, parques, su modernización y actividades culturales, hacen de Bogotá un importante destino turístico, el cual crece cada vez más.

Bogota´s savannah was seat of the Muiscas town. The Muiscas indians were skilled craftsmen who dominated complex techniques to mold gold. An example of its extraordinary creativity is the RAFT MUISCA, that can be admired in the GOLD MUSEUM; it represents one of the ceremonies that gave origin to the legend of EL DORADO This legend led the adventure of the spaniards conquerors to these lands, among them GONZALO JIMENEZ DE QUESADA , who discovered and founded the savannah of Bogota, August 6th of 1538, giving it the name “Santa Fe de Bogotá”. The shock firts and then the fusion of the two cultures, spanish and indian, gave origin to the racial and cultural mestization that is one of the main characteristics of Bogotá city. Around this first town the city began its development of what today is called la Candelaria, this neighborhood, it is one of the most representative sectors of the Bogotá colonial. When walking through its narrow streets, looking its large houses and churches, you cant appreciate the spanish style of the XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries the have, that evoke its glorious past. The independence came to Colombia soon, July 20th of 1810, after it, Bogotá city was transforming little by little, imitating other architectonic styles and mixing them with the original one, to get the Bogotá nowdays. Bogotá D.C. has become an important center educational, cultural, health, financial and business nationally and internationally. Its climate, museums, art galleries, malls, parks, modernization and cultural activities make an important tourist destination Bogotá, which grows even more. LOCALIZACIÓN Bogotá D.C. es la capital de la república de Colombia, Sur América. La ciudad se encuentra ubicada en una meseta de la Cordillera Oriental de los Andes. EL ÁRBOL INSIGNIA Se escoge el Nogal según acuerdo 69 del 2002 en el Consejo de Bogotá. LA FLOR INSIGNIA Se adopta la orquidea Odontolglossum Luteopurpureum Lindl, con el acuerdo 088 de 2003 LA BANDERA La bandera fue adoptada el 9 de octubre de 1952. Se compone de dos franjas horizontales de colores amarillo y rojo, se basan en la revolución de 1810; el amarillo representa Justicia y el rojo, Libertad. EL ESCUDO El escudo fue adoptado en 1548. Ha tenido diferentes interpretaciones durante los años. El águila negra representa el coraje y la firmeza y las nueve granadas, representan el valor y la intrepidez. ALTITUD La ciudad se encuentra a una altura de 2.630 metros sobre el nivel del mar, a 4°35’ 56" de latitud norte y 74º04'51" de longitud oeste del meridiano de Greenwich. SUPERFICIE Tiene un área total de 1.776 km² y un área urbana de 307 km². HORA INTERNACIONAL Se tiene una diferencia de cinco (5) horas con el meridiano de Greenwich. Esta hora es igual en todo el país. LÍMITES DE LA CIUDAD Por el oriente con los cerros de Monserrate y Guadalupe, el páramo de Cruz Verde y la población de la Calera. Por el norte con la población de Chía, por el occidente con los municipios de Funza y Mosquera y por el sur con las poblaciones de Soacha y Sibaté.

NOMENCLATURA Las calles van en sentido oriente-occidente y su nomenclatura aumenta de sur a norte. Las carreras van en sentido norte - sur (paralelas a los cerros) y su numeración aumenta de oriente a occidente. TRANSPORTE El transporte público de Bogotá D.C. se compone de buses, busetas, colectivos, taxis, y el sistema transmilenio. Los buses y las busetas van a todo lo largo y ancho de la ciudad y según su modelo y modalidad tienen tarifas diferentes. HORARIO DEL COMERCIO Los establecimientos comerciales por lo general atienden de 9:00 a.m. a 8:00 p.m. de lunes a sábado. Domingos y festivos de 9:00 a.m. a 6 p.m. Los bancos y corporaciones funcionan de 9:00 a.m. a 3:00 p.m. de lunes a viernes. Hay algunos bancos y corporaciones que tienen horario extendido de lunes a sábado. PROPINAS En la mayoría de los restaurantes y centros nocturnos la propina está incluida en la cuenta. Si no está incluida, lo mas usual es el 10% del total sin el IVA de la misma. PERIÓDICOS Los más importantes de la ciudad son El Tiempo, El Espectador, La República y El Siglo. TELÉFONOS PÚBLICOS Por toda la ciudad se pueden encontrar teléfonos públicos que funcionan con monedas o tarjeta prepagada. Existe el discado directo nacional e internacional, operado por algunas compañías que utilizan diferentes discados. EQUIPOS DE FUTBOL Existen tres equipos de fútbol profesional que son: Los Millonarios, independiente Santa Fe y La Equidad.

TRANSPORTATION Bogotá D.C. has a modern transportation system, composed of large buses, medium size buses, micro vans, taxis and the transmilenio system. The large buses and medium size buses go all along the city. They have different fares depending on their type and category. TRADING HORARY The commercial establishments are open generally between 9 am and 8 pm, Monday through Saturday. Sunday and holidays between 9 am and 6 pm. The banks operate between 9 am and 3 pm, Monday through Friday. Some banks have extended the horary , Monday through Saturday. TIPPING In most restaurants and nightclub, the tip is included in the bill. . NEWSPAPERS The most important ones are: El Tiempo, El Espectador, La República and El Siglo. PUBLIC TELEPHONES The Public telephones can be found in all the city, they work with coins or prepaid cards. You can make nationwide and international calls, there are different companies that give this service. They use the following code numbers. There are national and international direct dial, operated by some companies that use different codes. The indicative and area codes of each city and country are in the directory of the city. SOCCER TEAMS There are three professional football clubs are: Los Millonarios, independiente Santa Fe and La Equidad.

CAJEROS AUTOMÁTICOS Existe una extensa red de cajeros automáticos por toda la ciudad. Están activos durante 21 horas del día. Algunos cajeros como Visa, Cirrus y Master Card, permiten transacciones internacionales de cualquier tipo. TARJETAS DE CRÉDITO Y CHEQUES VIAJEROS Tarjetas Débito y Crédito. La mayoría de los establecimientos comerciales, restaurantes y supermercados, brindan el servicio de tarjeta débito. De igual manera aceptan tarjetas de crédito internacionales. Cheques de Viajero El pago con cheques de viajero sólo es posible en algunos hoteles. Puede hacer su cambio en bancos o casa de cambio de la ciudad. En el comercio en general no podrán ser utilizados.

RESTRICCIÓN DE VEHÍCULOS (Pico y Placa) Es un programa de restricción a vehículos de uso particular y público. En los particulares consiste en la prohibición para transitar de 6:00 a.m. a 8:00 p.m. de Lunes a Viernes. Esta restricción está repartida según el último número o dígito de la placa del automóvil. Sábados, domingos y festivos no aplica la medida. CICLORUTAS En Bogotá D.C. se han construido 122 km de ciclo-rutas, están localizadas a los lados de algunas vías principales, intermedias y a través de los parques, para integrar el uso de la bicicleta en el sistema alternativo de transporte.

VEHICULAR RESTRICTION It is a restriction that affect privade and public vehicules. In the private vehicles consist in the restraint to be in the road in determinated times, generally between 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. (monday through friday). The restriction is distributed according the last number of the vehicle plate. BIKE PATHS In Bogotá D.C. you can find 128 km. of paths network as well as comfortable pathways, which have been created as an alternative to integrate the use of the bicycle into the transportation system of the city. TERMINAL DE TRANSPORTES Calle 33B No. 69-59 - (Occidente) Situado en el Occidente de la ciudad, cerca al barrio Ciudad Salitre; es el lugar donde salen y llegan todos los buses nacionales e internacionales de diferentes lugares de Suramérica. El terminal se divide en cinco secciones con diferentes colores 1. Amarilla: Va al Sur del país. 2. Azul: Va al Oriente y occidente. 3. Roja: Va al norte del país y lugares en Suramérica. 4. Verde: Servicio de taxis Interdepartamentales. 5. Morada: Llegada de pasajeros. VÍAS DE INGRESO Y SALIDA Las principales vías son: Al norte: Autopista norte y carrera séptima con destino al departamento de Boyacá y norte del País. Al Sur: Avenida Boyacá, carrera 68 y autopista sur con destino al Tolima y sur del País. Al Occidente: Calle 13, calle 80 y autopista a Medellín, con destino a Caldas, Antioquia y la Costa Atlántica. Al Sur Oriente: Avenida Boyacá , avenida Caracas con destino a los Llanos y Orientales Villavicencio. SANTUARIO DE GUADALUPE Ubicado al lado de Monserrate, a una altura de 3.317 m.s.n.m. En 1940 fue reconstruida y erigida la estatua en la cima del cerro, la cual realmente corresponde a la Virgen María Inmaculada, a pesar de que el cerro es conocido desde hace cuatro siglos como Guadalupe.

Población famosa por los tejidos de lana, las alfombras y los tapetes; es usual hacer una parada para degustar helados, dulces y amasijos. TABIO ( 45 Kms) En lo alto del cerro que domina el poblado se encuentra la ermita de Santa Bárbara, construcción que data de 1604 Los termales de Tabio ofrece dos piscinas con aguas de propiedades terapéuticas. CHÍA (55 Kms) Saliendo por la Autopista Norte y por la variante de Cajicá, a la izquierda se aprecia el Puente del Común, construido en 1785. MELGAR (99 Kms) Temperatura: 26ºC. A 2 horas de Bogotá. Melgar es un lugar donde los Bogotanos se escapan los fines de semana para reposar en sus fincas y hoteles. SOPÓ (47 Kms) Fundada en 1612; en el parque principal se puede visitar la iglesia del Divino Salvador, pues en su interior, guarda doce lienzos; los 12 ángeles de Sopó. A 300 metros se encuentra el santuario del Señor de la Piedra, que conserva la Pequeña Piedra, aparecida en 1753 en la que aparece la imagen del Divino Rostro. SALINAS DE ZIPAQUIRÁ (50 Kms) Al norte de Bogotá D.C. En el corazón de la mina se encuentra una Catedral única, esculpida en las sales sólidas y abierta al público en 1954. SALTO DE TEQUENDAMA (30 Kms) Este es un lugar donde el río Bogotá tiene una caída de 132 metros. LAGUNA DE GUATAVITA (77 Km) Un lago sagrado y centro de ritos de los indios Muiscas (Chibchas). Este lago hermoso y calmado dio origen a la leyenda de “ELDORADO”.
