City Sights The USS Pampanito, a WWII submarine museum and memorial is open to the public at Pier 45. PIER 39, a renovated cargo pier, is home port to the Blue & Gold Fleet and offers two levels of specialty shops and destination dining including Pier Restaurants and Hard Rock Cafe. r GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE (SF Map: D1) The Golden Gate Bridge (Highway 101 North) links San Francisco with Marin County. Before its completion in 1937, the bridge was considered unbuildable because of foggy weather, 60-mile-per-

hour winds and strong ocean currents sweeping through a deep rugged canyon below. Often shrouded in thick fog, the bridge sways 27 feet to withstand winds of up to 100 miles per hour. The color of the bridge, known as International Orange, was chosen because it blends well with the bridge’s natural surroundings. The two great cables contain enough strands of steel wire (80,000 miles) to encircle the equator three times. The concrete poured into its piers and anchorages would pave a five-foot wide sidewalk from New York to San Francisco. Pedestrians and bicyclists are allowed across the bridge on pathways with sweeping views of the City, Alcatraz and the Marin Headlands. The bridge toll for vehicles is $6 collected when entering San Francisco. Vantage points from the San Francisco side include the Toll Plaza and Visitors Center (before crossing the bridge) and Fort Point (under the bridge). The first exit on the Marin side of the bridge, Vista Point, provides outstanding views of the San Francisco skyline.

r COIT TO WER (SF Map: N4) Atop Telegraph Hill is the 210-foot Coit Tower, built with funds left to the City by philanthropist Lillie Hitchcock Coit for the beautification of San Francisco. Due to Coit’s admiration for the fire fighters who fought the 1906 earthquake fires, many believe the tower was designed in the shape of a fire hose nozzle. The view from atop the east side of the tower spans 360 degrees. Inside, you’ll find a history museum and murals that depict working life in 1930s California.

r THE HAIGHT (SF Map: E-F11) The history of the Haight is as colorful as the Victorian architecture that lines the streets of this neighborhood. The Haight Ashbury community is universally recognized for its creativity and diversity expressed by the hybrid mixture of shops, residents, and its landmark place in history. The style and ingenuity that started in the sixties still rings true today.

r LOMBARD STREET (SF Map: L3-4) Located in the Russian Hill district, Lombard Street is known as “the crookedest street in the world” because of its eight sharp turns on a 40-degree slope. The turns, known as switchbacks, were built in the 1920s to allow traffic to descend the steep incline. The street zigzags around beautiful flowers and shrubs and offers a nice view of the bay. There are stairways (without curves) on either side of the street for pedestrians. The descent begins at Hyde Street.

r ALC ATRA Z (SF Map: L0) Alcatraz Island has served as a harbor fortification, military detention facility and maximum-security federal penitentiary. The West Coast’s first and oldest operating lighthouse is also located on the island. Today Alcatraz is one of San Francisco’s top tour attractions; over one million people visit Alcatraz each year. Most curiosity surrounding Alcatraz focuses on the period when the island served as the infamous maximum-security prison for notorious Mafia criminals and high-risk convicts. In 1934 control of Alcatraz shifted from the US military to the Department of Justice who found itself ill equipped to deal with the violent crime surge that followed the Great Depression. Citizens lived in fear as mobsters and thugs ruled the streets in many metropolitan cities. Alcatraz proved the perfect solution for incarcerating the country’s most violent of criminals. A foremost security expert was commissioned to design a 600-cell escape-proof prison where a ratio of one guard to every three prisoners was maintained. The first prisoners on Alcatraz were handpicked from other penitentiaries and were among the nation’s most unmanageable convicts. Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and Robert “Birdman” Stroud were among the first group of inmates to arrive. Crimes committed by the hardened criminals who resided on the island ranged from bank robbery to rape to murder. Upon arrival at Alcatraz new prisoners were assigned to a private cell and provided with only life’s most basic necessities: clothing, food, water and medical care; anything above and beyond this was considered a privilege. Inmates were required to observe a strict silence policy, only being allowed to talk during meals and recreation. Historically, many prison riots had been started because of the poor quality of prison food so Warden James Johnston vowed that the Alcatraz cafeteria would be the best in the prison system. Prisoners of Alcatraz dined on a menu of salads, fresh fruit, diverse entrees and even desserts.

Although the island is only 1.25 miles from shore, there is no evidence of any successful escapes across the icy Bay. The prison was the only one in the federal system that touted hot showers—a luxury designed to keep prisoners from acclimating to the cold water. There were 14 attempts to escape Alcatraz during its 29-year tenure as a federal penitentiary. Most attempts ended with escapees being recaptured or killed. Frank Lee Morris and Clarence and John Anglin made the most famous escape attempt in 1962. The movie, Escape from Alcatraz, starring Clint Eastwood, was based on their elaborate plot. Using homemade tools to break out of their cells, the inmates made their way off the island using rafts and inflatable life vests made from prison issued raincoats. Many still speculate whether or not the inmates survived the cold and rough waters to reach land and the US Marshals continue to hunt for the escapees. In 1963 the decision to close Alcatraz was made by US Attorney General Robert Kennedy. Alcatraz desperately needed repair from extensive salt-water and air corrosion at a time when budgets were being cut. At three times the operating expenses of other penitentiaries, Alcatraz was simply too costly to keep open. The isolation (and hence lack of natural resources) that had made the island such an attractive site for a maximumsecurity prison ultimately sealed its fate. “The Rock” is now a popular tourist attraction. The 12-acre island is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is accessible only by Alcatraz Cruises boats which depart daily from Pier 33 near Fisherman’s Wharf on the Embarcadero. To avoid disappointment, purchase Alcatraz tickets well in advance. In summer months and on holiday weekends, Alcatraz sells out as early as a week in advance. On days when the Alcatraz tour is sold out, consider a bay cruise which passes close to the island for photos. Be aware that to reach the cellhouse visitors must walk up a steep hill. The distance from the dock to the cellhouse is approximately 1/4 mile and equivalent to a 13-story climb. Visitors unable to make this climb may take advantage of an hourly electric shuttle. A self-guide brochure of Alcatraz Island (printed in English, Spanish, Italian, Spanish, German or Japanese) is available at the dock for a fee.

City Sights r VIC TORIANS (SF Map: J5 & G9) Nearly 514 blocks of San Francisco, including much of Nob Hill and Van Ness Avenue, were destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire. Many beautiful examples of nineteenth-century Victorian architecture were lost in the disaster. Today some 14,000 Victorians have been preserved west of Van Ness Avenue in the Cow Hollow, Pacific Heights and Alamo Square districts. Distinguished by their design features, the three styles of Victorians include the Italianate, the Stick and the Queen Anne. The Italianate which flourished in the 1870s is identified by a flat roof (often hidden behind a false front), slim pillars flanking the front door and bays with side windows that slant inward. These narrow row houses were patterned after Roman Classical ornamentation. Outstanding examples of the Italianate can be found at Bush and Fillmore streets. The Stick, which peaked in popularity during the 1880s, added ornate woodwork outlines to the doors, frames and bay windows of the Italianate design. Other additions included the “French” cap, gables and the “three-sided rectangle” bays. View classic San Francisco Sticks at Laguna near Bush street. Designs changed dramatically with the Queen Anne Victorians in 1890. Turrets, towers, a steep and gabled roof, arches, spindles, glass art windows and sections of shingle siding distinguish the Queen Anne from her predecessors. Tour a grand Queen Anne, the Haas-Lilienthal House, located at 2007 Franklin at Washington. (Tours given Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday only.) Postcard Row is possibly the most photographed spot in the City. These colorful Victorian houses or “Painted Ladies” with the San Francisco skyline in the backdrop have graced many postcards and movie scenes. Capture the view from the center of the park on the edge of Alamo Square at Steiner and Hayes streets.

r THE EMBARC ADERO (SF Map: N- Q6-7) The Embarcadero is a waterfront boulevard lined with elegant palm trees, historic pier structures, hip eateries and luxury apartments and condominiums. San Francisco’s eastern waterfront has emerged as one of the City’s most exciting new neighborhoods. The Ferry Building serves as the marker from which piers are numbered, odd numbers are 18

located to the north and even numbers to the south. Located inside is the Ferry Building Marketplace which consists of gourmet shops and restaurants. An outdoor farmer’s market is held Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings. Riding a Muni F-line vintage streetcar is a fun way for visitors to view the San Francisco Bay, Coit Tower and famous Fisherman’s Wharf. The fleet of restored streetcars includes international and domestic trolleys from the 1920s and ’30s. The popular F-line runs a total of five miles beginning at its western terminal in the Castro district, down Market Street to the Embarcadero and ending at Jones and Beach streets in Fisherman’s Wharf.

r C ABLE C ARS The cable car was introduced to San Francisco on August 2, 1873. Wire-cable manufacturer Andrew Hallidie conceived the idea after witnessing an accident in which a horse-drawn carriage faltered and rolled backward downhill dragging the horses behind it. The first cable car to descend down Clay Street on Nob Hill was an immediate success. Besides creating a vital link in San Francisco’s public transportation system, the cable car opened the door for building on steep hills which until this time was thought to be impossible. Throughout the 1890s, eight transit companies operated 600 cars which covered 21 cable car routes and a total of 52.8 miles. Cable cars remained the primary mode of transportation until the 1906 earthquake. The quake and the fires that followed destroyed most of the cable car system, and as the City rebuilt, few lines were restored. A municipal railway replaced most lines. San Francisco’s beloved cable cars are the only vehicles of their kind still in operation and are designated National Landmarks.

r CHINATO WN (SF Map: M-N5-6) As you pass through the dragon-adorned Pagoda Gates on Grant Avenue at Bush Street, your senses

City Sights will be tempted by the aroma of ethnic cuisine, bright neon and the sound of foreign languages. The heart of Chinatown is Portsmouth Square where San Francisco’s first Chinese immigrants settled in the 1850s. Today, Chinatown is home to more than 10,000 of San Francisco’s Chinese residents. Most local Chinese commerce remains along Stockton Street where visitors will find traditional herb pharmacies, temples, fortune cookie factories, garment factories, fresh produce markets, seafood and poultry shops, and many fine restaurants. Visit the first Roman Catholic cathedral built on the West Coast, Old St. Mary’s Church (660 California/Kearny) built in 1854 by Chinese laborers.

r NORTH BEACH (SF Map: M - N4) North Beach, tucked between Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf, is a favorite gathering spot for visitors and locals alike. Waves of immigrants have created a diverse ethnic mix in North Beach which is often compared to Paris’ Left Bank. Today, the area is predominantly Italian and known as Little Italy of the West. It’s the restaurants, however, that draw the crowds to North Beach, and you won’t be disappointed with any selection that you make. Traditional cafes, Italian delicatessens selling homemade ravioli, and bakeries offering tempting pastries line Columbus Avenue. The Beat Generation of the 1950s is rooted in this eclectic San Francisco neighborhood. Upper Grant Avenue maintains the flavor of its Bohemian past. Poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s City Lights at 261 Columbus Avenue, the first paperback bookstore in the country and Allen Ginsberg’s publisher, was at the movement’s center. Facing City Lights on Jack Kerouac Place is Vesuvio, a saloon worth a visit for its Beat Generation memorabilia. At the heart of North Beach is Washington Square, a grassy piazza where the Church of Saints Peter & Paul is located.

r GOLDEN GATE PARK (SF Map: A - D9-11) Golden Gate Park is among the world’s greatest urban parks. Approximately three miles long and a half mile wide (1,017 acres), this treasure is covered with grassy meadows, wooded bike trails, secluded lakes, open groves and gardens. The Conservatory of Flowers, built in 1879 and modeled after London’s Kew Gardens, is a glass Victorian displaying a paradise of flowers. 20

The park’s main attractions include two newlyrebuilt museums, the deYoung Museum and California Academy of Sciences which features a living roof and indoor rainforest. The Japanese Tea Garden is a four-acre refuge of traditional Japanese architecture, koi ponds and bamboo trees. Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens contains the Garden of Fragrance, the Moon-Viewing Garden and the New World Cloud Forest. Attractions at the west end of the park include the Dutch Windmill and the historic Beach Chalet visitors center.

r C ASTRO (SF Map: F-G13) At the upper end of Market Street is the lively Castro District, an area that caters to its largely gay and lesbian population. The neighborhood, marked by the Castro Theatre marquee, has become a symbol of gay and lesbian pride throughout the world– somewhat of a gay Mecca. Visitors are always welcome in this friendly neighborhood which offers unique shopping and dining. The GLBT History Museum celebrates 100 years of San Francisco's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender past and is the only museum of its kind in the United States.

r MISSION DISTRIC T (SF Map: H-K13) Immerse yourself in the rich cultural traditions of Mexico and Latin America on Mission Street, where visitors can enjoy lavish murals, savory foods and a dazzling range of traditional and avant-garde art. One of the City’s oldest structures is Mission Dolores, the sixth Franciscan mission along El Camino Real. Valencia Street has become the epicenter of the gentrified Mission District. The desirable neighborhood commands high rents and is home to many of the City’s “must-try” eateries, hippest boutiques and coolest bars and clubs. Just a couple of blocks away, and parallel to Valencia, is Dolores Street. From the top of the hill, Dolores Park offers a spectacular downtown view and is a favorite local gathering spot, especially on sunny days.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936 and links San Francisco with Contra Costa and Alameda counties. Pedestrians are prohibited on the structure and a toll of $4-$6 is collected westbound. A self-anchored suspension span and new East span of the bridge are currently under construction and scheduled to open in late 2013.

The area south of Market Street continues to be transformed from vacant warehouses on industrial lots into a fashionable neighborhood. The South of Market district (SoMa) has emerged as the art and nightlife center of San Francisco and offers a collection of restaurants, cafes, galleries, bars and nightclubs. Yerba Buena Gardens, part of the city’s urban redevelopment plan, includes the Center for the Arts, a visual and performing arts complex, 5.5 acres of gardens with an outdoor performance area, the Martin Luther King Memorial, the Children’s Creativity Museum, an ice skating and bowling center, and San Francisco’s historic Charles Loof Carousel. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is now the second largest modern art museum in the United States.

Treasure Island, which sits in the middle of the Bay Bridge, was created in 1936 for the World’s Fair and then served as a Naval Base during World War II. Re-development efforts have resulted in old aircraft hangars now housing sound stages for film and television productions and San Francisco’s first full service winery and tasting room. The island is known for the most spectacular waterfront views of the city and is easily accessible by auto, public transit and a marina.

Adolph Heinrich Joseph Sutro, the 24th mayor of San Francisco, once owned one-twelfth of the City including the north-western coast where the Cliff House and Sutro Baths ruins now stand. Sutro purchased the Cliff house in in 1881 and converted it from a haven for gambling, drinking and prostitution to a posh playground for San Francisco’s elite, former presidents and writers such as Mark Twain. Three Cliff House structures were built on this site and each met with similar unfortunate disaster. The current Cliff House overlooks Ocean Beach and Seal Rocks. Ocean Beach is a three-mile stretch of Pacific coastline. While not suitable for swimming, the beach is a great place to sunbathe, stroll and view a sunset. Lincoln Park is perched high above the Pacific Ocean where the view of the pounding surf, Golden Gate and Marin Headlands are unparalleled. The park is home to the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, a Neoclassical masterpiece modeled after the Palais de la Légion d’Honneur in Paris. This memorial to the Californians killed in World War I houses San Francisco’s fine arts museum. Although the museum is the main attraction here, the park still merits a stop to revel in the architectural splendor, photograph the spectacular views and observe one of the five original bronze casts of Rodin’s Thinker which is the centerpiece of the Court of Honor, the museum’s main entrance. Experienced hikers will enjoy a closer look at San Francisco’s rugged coastline by exploring the Land’s End Trail. The trail, formerly a narrowgauge road for trains which operated from 1888 to 1906, begins near the end of Camino del Mar in Lincoln Park, winds around the cliffs and passes through Cypress tree groves before ending near the Cliff House parking lot. Bring a camera, the views of the Golden Gate Bridge are spectacular along the way.

r FINANCIAL DISTRIC T (SF Map: N - P6-7) “Wall Street West” begins at Montgomery Street and extends east toward the Embarcadero. Although San Francisco’s Financial District is contained within a few city blocks, it is ranked as one of the top four financial centers in the nation.

For an overview of the area’s Gold Rush history, complete with stagecoaches and gold nuggets, visit the Wells Fargo Museum (420 Montgomery/ California). The Transamerica Pyramid (600 Montgomery/ Washington) is San Francisco’s tallest building, rising 853 feet.

r MUIR WOODS Muir Woods is located 17 miles northwest of San Francisco just off Highway 1. The park was named after naturalist John Muir who was instrumental in establishing the National Park system. This National Monument is made up of over 560 acres of redwood forest. Cathedral and Bohemian Groves contain the largest Coast redwoods – up to 252 feet tall and 14 feet across. The park is home to 50 species of birds, blacktailed deer, steelhead trout and hundreds of other “wild inhabitants.” U.S. Congressman William Kent and his wife Elizabeth had purchased the land to preserve its beauty and restful wilderness, and in 1908 they donated it to the federal govern-

ent to protect it from development. President Theodore Roosevelt declared Muir Woods the 10th national monument on January 9, 1908. When John Muir learned that a redwood forest near San Francisco was being named in his honor, he declared, “This is the best tree-lovers monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of the world.” Visitors are invited to explore the paved main trail which offers educational exhibits on the majestic redwood trees– some known to be 1,000 years old. There are six miles of walking trails and no cars are allowed in the redwood grove.

Scenic Tours Roads to the park are steep and winding. Vehicles over 35 feet long are prohibited. Parking space is very limited and fills quickly on most days. There are no RV parking facilities. The park is cool, shaded and moist year round. Daytime temperatures at Muir Woods average between 40 and 70 degrees Farenheit. Be prepared for rain if visiting the park between October through May. The park opens at 8am 365 days a year, though closing time varies seasonally. Inside the park are a visitor center, cafe and gift shop which open at 9am. Eight miles north of San Francisco across the bay is the tiny bayside community of Sausalito. Arrival by ferry is the best way to experience this Mediterranean-style community that is often compared to the French Riviera. Bicyclists will encounter only gradual inclines followed by a downhill coast into Sausalito when riding from San Francisco. Rental companies will provide directions, maps, helmets and locks. There is typically a nominal tasting fee at most wineries ($5-$20 per person). This fee often includes a souvenir glass and the opportunity to taste three to six wines. The quaint towns of Yountville and St. Helena are known for both their wineries and their many fine restaurants.

r SONOMA With its mild sunny climate and fertile soil, Sonoma was the perfect setting for the missionaries to plant the first crops of grapes used in making wine for the Holy Eucharist. Later, Count Agoston Haraszthy imported cuttings from Europe and produced the first European varieties in America. Literary legend and one-time Bay Area resident, Jack London created one of the most memorable images of the Sonoma Valley from an Indian fable. He called it the Valley of the Moons as the moon appears to rise several times over succeeding peaks in the Valley.

r MONTERE Y & C ARMEL With its wild, rocky coastline and brick cannery buildings, Monterey still maintains much of the flavor of John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. Boutiques, restaurants and antique stores line historic Cannery Row and the wharf area. Steinbeck fans will enjoy a stop at the Steinbeck Museum located near Cannery Row. At the end of the stretch is Monterey’s biggest attraction, the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The aquarium is home to more than 6,500 specimens of marine life indigenous to the Monterey Bay including playful sea otters, graceful sharks, elusive octopus and fierce wolf-eels. The natural beauty of the Monterey Peninsula can also be explored at one of the area’s state beaches. Here tidepools, filled with anemones and starfish, are hidden among the rocks. 17 Mile Drive™ is the scenic route between Monterey and Carmel. The road winds along the rugged coast and curves through groves of Monterey Pine and Gowen Cypress trees past the famous Lone Cypress and Pebble Beach Golf Course.
