RESOURCE
DEPARTMENT OF AGING
Dear Marylanders,
Do you know that there are more Marylanders over the age of 62 than there are children in the school system? By the year 2030, seniors, like me, will comprise 26 percent of the State’s population.
At the Maryland Department of Aging, we are changing the standard trajectory of aging. We don’t want our residents to wait for that fall, fraud or inability to maintain a home that forces them to move into an assisted living facility or a nursing home, where the average person “spends down” their assets within two years. We are committed to providing new and innovative ways to help Marylanders age in place.
We launched the first in the nation, statewide program called Senior Call Check (see article on p. 106). This free program is designed to check on the well-being of older adults. All Maryland residents, 65 and older, are invited to sign up for a daily call at a time convenient to their lifestyle. If, after three attempts, the participant does not answer, an alternate person (designated by the participant) will be notified. If no alternate is designated, local non-emergency services will be contacted. This program is an essential service to prevent someone from languishing on the floor after a fall or other calamity.
Another first in the nation program, Maryland Community for Life SM (CFL) is available in many areas of the State and expanding statewide (see article on p. 101). CFL SM brings you a package of non-medical services that make it easy to stay in your home. In exchange for a small membership fee (most of the cost is born by the State of Maryland and a generous non-profit), our members receive home maintenance services, assistance in navigating available services, and transportation. By providing these services, we reduce the risk of falls, fraud and isolation.
Our team is dedicated to supporting all older adults, individuals with disabilities, and their loved ones by providing access to information about services available in the community. Please check out all of the resources on our website, aging.maryland.gov, or follow us on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram @MarylandAging.
Sincerely,
Rona E. Kramer Secretary, Maryland Department of Aging

Independence with a Little Help
Maryland program delivers non-medical support for aging in place
Sometimes remaining independent means getting a little help. The Maryland Department of Aging has developed a unique program to help Maryland’s older adults age-in-place, while remaining safe, healthy and engaged. It is called Community for Life℠.
What is the Community for Life℠ program?
Community for Life℠ was designed to help Maryland’s older adults remain in their homes as they age. The program helps seniors maintain their independence without burdening loved ones, exhausting financial resources, or leaving home in favor of more expensive long-term care facilities. The program directly targets the non-medical needs associated with aging-in-place by offering three primary services: 1) home repair and maintenance, 2) a service navigator to coordinate access to services, and 3) transportation.
How does the program work?
For a monthly fee, members receive, at a minimum, the following services:
• Basic home repair and maintenance by a community “Handyman,” a list of vetted contractors, and contract review.
• Regular contact with a “Service Navigator” to help coordinate access to services and to assist with any needs that may arise.
• Transportation to doctor appointments, grocery stores, shopping, social events, and more.
• Additional services may be included in each community.
Community for Life℠ helps protect older adults from scams, fraud, and exploitation by providing them with essential non-medical services to help them continue living independently in their homes. The program also helps prevent falls and in-home accidents by ensuring that necessary repairs are completed. Finally, many participants are able to maintain their home equity and remain independent without

Sometimes a simple call is all you— or your mom, dad or loved one— needs. The Maryland Department of Aging offers just that: a daily phone call to check on your well-being.
Created to give older adults who live alone and their loved ones added peace of mind, the Senior Call Check program provides a free daily automated phone call to participants. The calls are made within the same one-hour time block selected by participants every day. The calls ensure that participants are able to answer the phone.

The Maryland Senior Call Check program providesa free daily automated call to verify the well being ofolder residents at a time that is convenient for them.
How does the program work? After approval and enrollment, participants receive daily calls during a one-hour time block selected by the participant. Calls are available during four time slots: 8-9 a.m., 9-10 a.m., 2-3 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. If the participant does not answer the initial call, they will be tried two more times.
If the subsequent calls go unanswered, an alternative contact selected by the participant will be called and asked to check on the participant. If none of the calls are answered, local law enforcement may be asked to perform a nonemergency
welfare check.
