ACTIVE DESIGN FOR CITY IN REVOLUTION E-mail:qing.zhuo@outlook.com phone: +86 15774509702

In fact, the actual needs of cities are dynamic. Urban function, shape and structure should correspond to the development of the city and change of social needs. As far as I am concerned, there are many stages of urban design in changing cities, while most urban designers focus their attention on rising districts, I want to emphasize the active design in declining districts of cities.

GROWING RING

Symbiosis of Tsukiji And Olympic Games

Can Tsukiji Coexist with Olympic Games?

Site: Tsukiji Fish Market, Tokyo, Japan November 2018 Personal Project Collective Work Supervisor: Yipeng Guo Email: yipeng.guo@lp-arch.com Contact Number: 85266552600 Project Team Member: Dian Yu Role: Building Part of Model Making and Half of Design Drawing Site Area: 439,225㎥ Building Area: 197,864㎥

The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games is around the corner, the successful holding of which the Japanese government sees as an important factor in reviving the Japanese economy. At the same time ,Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo Bay is going to shut, where old facilities are unable to keep up with the rising volume of trading. On the one hand, the government decided to transform it into Olympic service facilities and parking lots. On the other hand, the location of the market is less than a kilometer from the prosperous Tokyo CBD, no matter on the traffic or land use, it can no longer meet the demand of different social groups. If the market wants to survive, it must be upgraded. I' ll upgrade the site in two phases. During the Olympic Games, the venue has four Olympic venues, four parking lots and the Olympic park. The outer ring buildings provide services for the Olympic Games, including the athletes ' apartments, welcome center, media center, and visitor center and commercial service facilities. I also build a food centre on Tsukiji Fish Market for athletes. Later there will add tower buildings, temporary facilities will be dismantled and restored to urban green space after the game. The athletes ' apartments will be sold as residential buildings. Most service centers, independent NOC units, will be converted into residential public services, such as neighborhood committees, post offices, banks, shops, and public space for citizens to use.

Because the original shape of the earth is a 1/4 ring, after comparing the three growth patterns, we find that the ring is the most beneficial to the development. Compared with the banded city, the connection between the functional areas is more convenient because of the closed annular shape. Since the central part of the ring is mainly Olympic stadiums and parks, the outer ring buildings provide services for the Olympic Games, which can create beautiful landscape for the city and provide equal and convenient services for the Olympic Games.

The conflict behind the project is so severe that the Japanese government wants to demolish the market for Tokyo Olympics and developers want to build the CBD, while a large number of restaurants would closed down, cultural heritage would been lost and tourism would been hit hard. 1935: under the guidance of Professor Mizuno of Tokyo Imperial University, the building of the Tsukiji market was completed.

2001: The former governor of Tokyo came up with relocation plan and choose Toyosu as the new site. And the new market was finished in May 2016.

All Markets: its single function does not meet the needs of land use in Tokyo Bay with high land price. All Olympic Games Stadiums: the land value id going to be wasted after the Olympic Games for reduced use of facilities, declining vitality and waste of stadiums. All CBD: the third one makes the fish market completely destroyed. It is going to be Engulfed by the mad spread of big cities and losts its historical and cultural value and important tourist attractions in Tokyo. All in all,the upgrade is to be combined with the Olympic site, CBD and Tsukiji.

The Acheng Sugar Factory was built in 1904 and went bankrupt in 1996. It had been used as an industrial land for nearly 100 years. After that, it has never recovered from bankruptcy and has no subsequent development work. It has always existed as an isolated island in the city. The surrounding traffic network is broken, the site density is low, and the greening is rare, the surrounding area is mainly residential, the city vitality is low, and the society lacks common prosperity. At the same time, the courtyard culture of the SOE era is also losing, and the memory of the site is broken, so I plan to create a community of entrepreneurs where people can start businesses in small groups, through close communication and sharing of facilities, I intend to call back the memory of the collective life of that era. Suture is divided into three dimensions: 1、Starting with the internal buildings and the external network, the base will be sutured with the surrounding cities. 2、the base will be connected by a landscape bridge, along the way it passes through important architecture, such as the courtyard, the studios, The Sugar Factory Museums. In addition to the original buildings linked to the streets and roads, the bridge has also created a new dimension for building interactions. 3、Building an open community for entrepreneurs and creating rich and interesting public space. The community is intend to create the dynamic atmosphere of life and attracts different social groups to visit. With the emerging of new industries and the involvement of entrepreneurs, the sugar factory can be prosperous again as a new urban vitality center.

QUESTION

SITE ANALYSIS

Dissolving Isolated Island of City The base is located in an industrial belt at the entrance to the city of Acheng, which divides the city like a huge crack. The main problems of the base are broken road traffic, many abandoned buildings, lack of urban green space and square, since sugar factory was abandoned in 1996, there are no new functions in the base, there are some hidden dangers of safety, affecting the image of the city.

Upgrading of historic blocks Site: Zalantun, China June2019 Academic Project(School-Level Excellent Graduate Design) Individual Work Supervisor: Jun Zhang Email: zhangjun@nefu.edu.cn Contact Number: 13704515827 Project Role: All Digital Model Making and Design Drawing Site Area:355,405㎥

The historic district of Zalantun Middle East Railway developed rapidly as vacation and rest place at the beginning of the 20th century. A large number of Russian personnel came here for vacation, Zalantun was once famous among Western Europe. However, after a hundred years of changes, it has gradually failed to keep up with the development of the times, showing signs of functional aging and decline of vitality, and a large number of old residents have also moved out. Many historic buildings are rented out to migrant workers , and the protection of historic blocks is imminent. At present, many old buildings in Zalantun have been destroyed, the growth of ancient trees has been destroyed, Historic blocks can't keep up with the development of modern cities. Such as the jigsaw puzzle that can not be pieced together, the purpose of this design is to use the intervention of new green space, square, parking lot and infrastructure to reassemble the original broken space. At the same time, the existence of the morning market is also an important factor linking the social feelings of acquaintances. This design stimulates public social activities through a series of design techniques. The design sequence is as follows: (1) to study the existing architectural space, to classify the historical buildings, to determine the reserved buildings and the buildings to be demolished, to draw the distribution map of ancient trees; (2) to put forward four ways of reconnecting the old buildings; (3) to put forward four modes of ancient tree protection; (4) to put forward four ways of dialogue between the new and the old buildings; (5) to divide the importance of the historical buildings into six levels and to put forward nine new and additional construction modes; (6) to extract the design elements of historical buildings and design new buildings; (7) give the new buildings four main functions of commerce, office, culture and residence, upgrade the historic blocks; 8, redesign the street space of the morning market to promote the prosperity of historic block.

Bicycle Bridge as city link on Copenhagen port Site: Copenhagen, Denmark November2019 Competition Project Individual Work Supervisor:Ran Yang Email: bluesourcebeck@gmail.com Personal Project Project Role: All Digital Model Making and Design drawing Site Area:1,500㎥

Copenhagen was originally a viking fishing village established in 10th Century. The city is known to be one of the most sustainable cities in the world, efficiently working towards climate change through its transportation & town planning. Copenhagen have Established a 100 years long bicycling culture across the city, which was actively supported by government and urban planners of the city. The location for the Bridge is chosen across the Port of Copenhagen in Denmark, the new bicycle bridge is intend to make the location appropriate for enhancing public life with a unique architectural intervention and works as the link of city. Due to the requirments of the location, the central portion of minimum 25 m must be openable, to allow passage of ships, boats etc. However, during the opening of the bridge, the use of the bridge will be greatly reduced, a large number of pedestrian bicycles gather on both sides of the bridge anxiously waiting for release, or, the opening and closing of the bridge itself is an excellent opportunity to promote the occurrence of different behaviors? If the bridge is a rotatable bridge constructed by the same modules, different requirements promote different forms of production and stimulate different behaviors. In my design, The shape of the bridge is controlled by time, changing every two hours and changing twelve times a day, which brings people the opportunity to look at the surrounding cities from different angles, and makes everyone's experience of visiting the single bridge different, prolonging people's staying time on the bridge, stimulating the emergence of different activities, and greatly increasing the opportunity for people to communicate with strangers. At the same time, the form of the bridge draws lessons from the characteristics of the surrounding castle, so that the bridge echoes the appearance of the city, like a changing floating castle on water.

What is the biggest challenge facing this bridge?

During the opening of the bridge, the use of the bridge will be greatly reduced, a large number of pedestrians and bicycles gather on both sides of the bridge, waiting anxiously. Or, the opening and closing of the bridge itself is an excellent opportunity to promote the occurrence of different behaviors? If the bridge is a rotatable bridge constructed by same modules, the openning requirements promote different forms of bridge and stimulate different behaviors.

What is the best form of bicycle bridge?

St.Paul Church

We use triangle, square and hexagonal as mo d u l e s to d o exp e r i me nts , and find that the same number of hexagonal modules can be combined to get the most beautiful form, more spatial changes, hexagonal has the full directivity of the circle, people have more interaction in all directions.

What is the unique interaction between the bridge and the surrounding cities?

Danish Museum of Art And Design Rosenberg Castle Fredrik Church

The traditional bridge gives people only a few fixed views of the city, and people have a similar experience of the space around the bridge, but the deformed bridge gives people the opportunity to see the city from different angles.

There are many beautiful castles in Copenhagen, and the appearance of the rotating bridge draws on the arches and hexagonal sizes of historical buildings, echoing the surrounding cities, it looks as a floating castle in the port of Copenhagen.

We meet again. I can't wait to share with you what I saw on the bridge! This bridge really has magic! You never know what is waing for you aer the next transformaon, and everyone has unique experience!

The two friends came to the deformed bridge at the same time. They agreed to visit the bridge on a different route, and finally gathered at the gate of the cafe to share their experiences. On the way, they experienced three changes in the bridge. The two people, who were originally far away, met again after the first change. After the second change, the air corridor, which was otherwise impassable, passed, and the three small buildings merged into one big building. After the third change, the big buildings did not disappear, and they met each other again.

FREE LAND FOR FOREIGN LABOR Architecture of Culture communication Site: Taichung, Taiwan October2018 Supervisor: Grace Chen Personal Project Individual Work Role: All Digital Model Making and Design Drawing Floor Area: 1,296㎥ Gross Floor Area: 6,628㎥ Building Storey: 11

Taichung Central Region was once the most prosperous city center in Taichung, and it was at its peak in the 1990s. However, with the westward shift of the urban center in recent years, it fell. there are many abandoned buildings waiting to be transformed here. It lacks space for public activities, but because of low prices here, it attracts a large number of Southeast Asian workers. Foreign workers do not have their own public space, if they are inadvertently across the racial and spatial boundaries, they will be expelled. They are different in culture and religion beliefs, which are not respected by their employers and they do not have a fixed place to meet their religious and cultural needs. so they have to occupy public spaces to celebrate their religious festivals. They are in Lack of opportunities to participate in local social activities and have no opportunities to make friends. This design intends to create a Southeast Asian cultural center for them to develop a sense of belonging. This is an transformation project based on an abandoned shopping mall. At present, foreign workers mainly come from Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. There are three religions, Buddhism, Catholicism and Islam. I design four separate zones for them and break the restrictions on the original floors to ensure that the activities of people in each country can occur on different floors, but the people in different countries will not be disturbed. They share platforms with each other and have eye contact, but I will not let daily activities of different religious habits happen in the same area frequently, I intend to let them keep an appropriate distance with each other.

YONGQI DEPARTMENT STORE is 36 meters inlength, width and height, so I regard it as a cube of 216 cubes with 6 meters in length of side, and create rich architectural space through the change of the combination of cubes. Too far away to communicate

SOLUTION 1

no direct contact, but maintain eye contact

When people have more lines of sight, they tend to talk to each other, and the deign makes it possible for people to see each other in dfferent floor.

Fo re i g n wo r ke rs a re s c atte re d d i s o rd e r l y throughout the building. Different cultures make them prone to conflict with each other.

SOLUTION 2

The foreign workers take the floor space as the boundary, the contradiction is not easy to occur, but this distinction is too monotonous and boring.

SOLUTION 3

Space breaks through floor boundaries, foreign workers can have their own area on each floor, but this spatial distribution is too homogeneous.

SOLUTION 4

Foreign workers can maintain a certain distance, separated by public space. Space dislocation created a rich space, people can choose the place they like freely.

LOBBY The openest area in the cultural center, it is mainly occupied by people from Thailand and Vietnam. The lobby is open for streets, pedestrians can pass freely.

PHILIPINES AREA There are many air corridor and stairs can help people travel in different floors, they can create an more openable and interesting place. Also, constant eye contact between people from different contries can help them eliminate hostility.

VIETNAM AREA It is connected with streets and Thailand area closely due to the cultural similarity between vietnam and Taiwan, pedestrians can experience the vietnam culture when they pass by.

OFFICE AREA There are many walfare organizations working here to help these foreign labors defend their rights when necessary, the cultural center can make the Central District become a more harmonious place and maintain social equity.

INDONESIA AREA People from Indonesia prefer quieter place and are easy to conflict with those from other countries, they are placed in a high position, but they can watch the others from a distance.

ROOF GARDEN VIEW People can overlook the buildings from the roof garden and find there are many people from different countries gather together with little conflict and more friendly conversation, that is a freeland for foreign labors.

Rotation and Interpenetration

Mar.2018 Personal Project Individual Work Role: Model Making and Photo Taking

Rotation and interlacing are important terms of three dimensional composition, and also important elements of formal beauty. I used chopsticks and ice cream sticks to connect them in my exploration of the greatest possible composition of rotation and interpenetration. And the rotations at different angles were interspersed with each other, and I got 9 kinds of results in my study.

Cats have the nature of climbing and drilling, and are easily frightened and need a quiet and safe environment. I have fully satisfied their nature in the two designs, cats can freely drill around in the cat's houses, my designs can accommodate multiple cats live and play together. And it can also be used as furniture for placing books and gadgets.
