Parent to Parent As the school year winds down, May is always a busy time for families with school-aged kids — not quite as busy as December, but close. Except this year, with three of my four kids “graduating” from their respective levels, the number of end-of-year
programs, field trips, and other activities seems to be significantly higher than normal. Throw in two birthdays in our family, a few doctor appointments, and a house that is still recovering from Hurricane Irma, and I think May’s “busy” factor is going to far surpass December’s this time around. Having taken advantage of dual enrollment courses during high school, my oldest, David, is now graduating from college after three years with his B.F.A. in Graphic Design. Daniel has one more year of high school, but Hanna is graduating from middle school, and Haylee is finishing up elementary school. Poor Daniel may be feeling a little left out, but fortunately, one of the birthdays this month is his, so he’ll at least be the center of attention for one day. And next year, when he finishes high school, he’ll be the only one in the family reaching a major milestone.
Haylee apparently picked up on that, because last night, as we were leaving to go grab dinner at Chickfil-A, she picked up the UNO cards and announced that this would be a good opportunity to play a game. We would be sitting down to eat anyway, so we might as well have a little fun while we were at it. So that’s what we did! We played four rounds at the restaurant, it was relaxing, and we were still done in plenty of time to go take care of the other errands we had to do.
While I don’t ever get overly stressed out — I take the view that these events are going to happen whether we’re completely ready for them or not — I do tend to be pretty focused on making sure I’m doing the next “most urgent” thing during times like this. So playing games with the kids really hasn’t been on my radar recently.
Sometimes fifth graders can come up with some of the best ideas! Until next time,
Jennifer

10 Ways to Make Your Mother Feel Special
The unique bond between a mother and child is never-ending. Our mother’s give selflessly so that we may prosper and grow. They polish and mold us; nurture and scold us. A mother’s love is everlasting and unconditional. Mothers are a blessing! How can we show such a dynamic and amazing woman how much we care? All Pro Dad wants to share 10 ways to make your mother feel special.
1. Respect: Everything Mom has done
for you…every single thing she has sacrificed on your behalf—deserves your respect. She has earned it! Treat her with the utmost dignity and honor.
6. Public Acknowledgement:
2. The Letter: Write your mom a hand-
written note. Describe to her the reasons why you feel she is special. Thank her for being such a wonderful person and parent. It will mean the world to her.
3. Scrapbook: Put together a scrapbook
of some of your favorite memories of her. Dig deep in those old photo boxes and albums. Get creative and make it fun. Moms love taking a trip down memory lane.

Moms love to be bragged on. Mind you, she’s not gonna ask you to brag, but she sure loves to hear you talking nicely about her. Make a point to give your mom credit for the person you have become. Honor her among her friends and peers with your kind words of praise.

8. Make Her Feel Needed:
As your mom gets older, she may begin to feel that she doesn’t have anything left to offer. Of course, that’s not true, but everyone wants to be needed…especially mom. Make sure she knows you and your family still need her. Include her in your life, and always make her feel welcome.
9. Loyalty: One of the most precious gifts
you can give your mother is your unquestioned loyalty. Blood runs thicker than water as they say. Never forget where you came from.
10. Flowers—Just Because:
We all send flowers on Mother’s Day and birthdays. Well, maybe not, but if you want to make her feel really special, give her flowers for no reason at all. Surprise her with a visit, and a personal delivery—just to say, “I love you and I was thinking about you.” It might sound corny, but she will be thrilled. The simple things in life mean the most.
Show her you’ve learned the lesson. Make sure you put those good manners into practice when you are with her (and even

mothers live in the U.S. according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and when you think of all the work that all these mothers do in raising their children, it is no wonder Mothers need to be celebrated! It was 104 years ago that President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. This year Mother’s Day falls on the 13th of May, so whether you celebrate with gifts, visits, flowers, or a simple phone call, make sure you take time out to say “thank you” to the moms you know, but especially to your own mom!

Cinco de Mayo,
85.4million
Spanish for “Fifth of May”, marks the anniversary of a victorious Mexican battle over a much larger French Army that took place on May 5, 1862 in Puebla, Mexico. Today Cinco de Mayo has become a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and for the over 30 million U.S. residents of Mexican origin, it is a joyous holiday celebrated with food, parades, and a lot of fun.
Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May and commemorates U.S. men and women who have died while in military service to our country. Every Memorial Day at sunrise, the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of America quietly pay tribute to those who have served our country bravely by placing an American flag at the graves of our fallen veterans.

DUNGY DIARIES
HOW TO TREAT A
WOMAN by Tony Dungy A few years back, during a press conference preceding a playoff game, a reporter asked me what I had done Friday afternoon to prepare—presumably for the game. But Friday afternoons during the season have always been personal time for us as a staff. I learned from Chuck Noll that you don’t change your schedule just because it’s a playoff game. So because we finished early on Friday, I went home and cleaned the house. Lauren had been out of town and was due back that evening, so I wanted her to come home to a clean house. This was something I could do to aid her wellbeing, and at that time it was a better gift than taking her out or buying her an expensive piece of jewelry. When I told the reporter how I spent my time, he laughed at what he thought was a joke. But I was serious. “I cleaned the house,” I repeated.
I try to find ways that I can chip in to make our house a sanctuary for Lauren. I learned that from my dad, who would give my mom some space and time to herself by taking us kids out to a park or otherwise keeping us occupied for
an afternoon. This gave Mom a chance to go off and shop or whatever—something just for her. As much as he enjoyed doing things with her, he knew that giving her the gift of time—away from us—was just as important. But he also made sure there were times that we all did things together as a family, he and my mom included. That was important for two reasons: first, he was making memories with all of us as a family unit, and second, he was modeling his behavior toward my mom in front of us. We didn’t realize it at the time, but it left a deep impression upon all of us. My brother and I were able to see how to honor and respect a woman. My two sisters were developing a point of reference for qualities they should look for in a husband. How many girls settle for substandard relationships because they don’t have that frame of reference? Too many men are continually baffled by their wives or can’t figure out how to interact with their families. There are countless books on how women think, so I’ll leave it at this; they are different. That much I’ve figured out. They are not men. I know that seems ridiculously obvious, but we can’t approach them as we would one of the guys. So how do we do it? Be involved with them—without bringing our own agendas. Again, do everything for the benefit of your loved one. Without being involved—deeply involved—with Lauren
for all these years and trying to listen to not only her words but also her heart, I wouldn’t have made any progress at all. We’ve invested time in our marriage. We’ve talked in evenings about finances and children. We’ve gone on dates. As much as possible, I’ve tried to create an environment on her terms. The interesting and blessed thing about that is this: she’s tried to do the same for me. And the most important way to show that love to your wife is to be involved: as a leader, listener, and encourager. Lead by helping with discipline, setting curfews and ground rules for the television and other technology use. Lead by being in unity with your wife. And listen—not to solve the problems of the day, as so often we will try to do. Just listen so she knows you care. She’s smart enough to solve her own problems, but she may appreciate your input even more if it’s offered at an appropriate time—later. In the meantime, tell her you love her, offer encouragement for something she’s tried or wants to try, and hold her every time she comes close. Be there for her. Loving the woman in your life follows the same principle of the old countryfair raffle rules: must be present to win.

Why It Matters If The At-Fault Driver Was Drunk by Chris Reynolds
Any automobile accident that results in injury is difficult to endure if you are the injured person. You might lose time from work, have to endure pain, need to go to multiple doctor appointments, and incur medical expenses. The law permits the injured person to ask a jury for “compensatory damages,” which are generally used to compensate the person for things they lost in the past or are likely to lose in the future. Generally, the injured person must prove that it is reasonably likely that the car crash caused the medical bills, lost wages, etc.
accident, and if the jury does find that the defendant was at fault, a second trial would then be held to determine the value of the injuries and how much the injured person should receive in compensation. Similar to this, in a case with a drunk driver, a judge might divide the compensation part of the trial into two trials: one trial to decide the amount of compensatory damages (medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, etc.), and a second trial to determine the amount of punitive damages (to punish the intoxicated driver).
One factor that can change a personal injury case significantly is when the at-fault driver is intoxicated at the time of the accident. When a drunk driver causes an automobile accident, the law permits the injured person to ask for an additional type of damages called punitive damages. Punitive damages are intended to punish a person for engaging in some sort of activity that the law wants to punish. It is hoped that this punishment will reduce the activity that is being punished.
This scenario arose in Florida recently in GEICO v. Dixon, 42 Fla. L. Weekly D101b (January 4, 2017). In the Dixon case, Mr. Dixon was injured in an automobile accident, and it was determined that the at-fault driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. The at-fault driver did not have any bodily injury coverage. Fortunately, the injured person had uninsured motorist coverage through GEICO and so he made an uninsured motorist claim to compensate him for his injuries. After settlement negotiations broke down because GEICO would not pay the $20,000 uninsured motorist policy limits, Mr. Dixon sued both GEICO and the at-fault driver.
Trials are sometimes divided into various parts as directed by the judge. For example, a if it is unclear who is at fault in an accident, a judge might order that a trial first take place that only considers who is at fault for the
18 • May 2018
The at-fault driver admitted that he was intoxicated and that he was at fault for the accident. GEICO asked that the court divide the damages phase of the trial into two parts: first, the compensatory damages phase (medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, etc.), and then the punitive damages phase against only the at-fault driver to punish him for causing bodily injury while voluntarily intoxicated in a car crash. The theory as stated by the judge was that “punitive damages are warranted against Mr. Alcebo (the at-fault driver) as a punishment to him and as a deterrent to others because he was driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages.” Further, though the uninsured motorist carrier “stands in the shoes of the atfault driver” for purposes of compensatory damages, the uninsured motorist insurance carrier is not responsible for punitive damages as a result of an at-fault drunk driver. Accordingly, the appellate court concluded that there should be no mention of

the alcohol during the compensatory damages part of the trial, and that the intoxication should be limited to the punitive damages phase of the trial. Drunk drivers can add many subtle complexities to a personal injury claim, so please speak with an experienced trial attorney to discuss your options.

My great-grandfather, Autonino, was known as the hardest working man in Ybor City, Florida, rising before dawn to pick vegetables from his garden to sell from his cart in town. My great-grandmother, Mae, taught school with her husband and played piano beautifully. And my husband’s grandfather, Lowry, had the nickname Shine because he was always so happy. These are real-life stories I recently passed on to my children. And when I did, I was helping them have “higher levels of emotional well-being, and also higher levels of identity achievement” according to a study by Emory University. Researchers found that children who know about their relatives from the past actually feel more secure about who they are in the world. So try to make time this summer to delve into your children’s family history, and share what you find with them. And if you’re going to see grandparents or other extended family soon, help your children talk with them about your family’s past. imom.com I’ve gone through a few jobs in my life: babysitter, tutor, piano teacher, engineer, to name a few. Some I loved, others not so much, but I worked hard at each one with varying levels of success. Motherhood, though, is a unique experience, because it is the one “job” where we cannot fail. It is up to us to raise these children who have been entrusted to us and do it well. And some days—most days—that feels like a daunting task. It is no wonder moms often feel inadequate. The demands of parenting are weighty. But let me just encourage you that you are doing a great job. In fact, sometimes the biggest signs of a great mom are the easiest to miss. Here is some of our best encouragement for moms.
1. You are exhausted…
because you are working hard. It is no small task to wake up in the night with an infant, potty-train a toddler, or deal with adolescent drama. I have yet to find a stage of parenting that isn’t draining on some level.
2. You make mistakes…
because you are teaching them real life. Few experiences are more humbling than asking forgiveness from a toddler, but it is so important. They need to see that you are not perfect, that you accept responsibility for your mistakes, and that you are willing to apologize. This sets a far better example for them than constantly trying to be perfect.
3. Your children make mistakes…
because, well, they will. And teaching them how to deal with their mistakes is part of our job. Let your kids see that their choices may have consequences, but that you will always love them. Because, of course, you will.
5. You let them out of their chores…
because you are teaching them life is about more than just work. I know this seems contradictory to the previous point, but isn’t that life, too? You need a little balance.
6. You miss out on fun things with friends…
because your family is your priority. We’ve all had moments of frustration over a missed moms’ night because a sick kid or school play comes first. Somewhere in the recesses of their minds, though, our kids see those choices and know they are loved.
7. You take time for yourself…
because being a happier person makes you a better mom. Yes, sometimes we have to miss out on things we would like to do. But selfcare is important, too, and it’s okay to leave Dad with a fussy baby or put the kids to bed early for a bubble bath or do whatever it is that restores your soul and sanity.
8. You feel guilty…
because you care. You want the best for them, and that is not always easily discernible. If my child hates baseball after three weeks, should I make him finish the season or let him quit? If kids are arguing, should I step in or let them sort it out? Public, private, or homeschool? Our days are full of endless decisions, and what’s right for one family isn’t always right for the next. Motherhood is not for the faint of heart. But if you are loving your kids and seeking the best for them, you are on the right track. You’ve got this, Mom.
4. You make them do chores…
because you are teaching them to be responsible. They will not always be little, and you are preparing them for adulthood by teaching them life isn’t always about playing.

From May to June, graduates and their families celebrate completing this stage of their lives by throwing a party in the grad’s honor. Here are some fun tips to help you as you plan your “grad bash” this spring! • Make invitations into little diplomas. Use a calligraphy pen to script the invitation, roll the paper up and tie with a colored ribbon. • Find out what gifts your grad would like. He or she may even want to put together a gift registry at their favorite store. • Give each graduating guest a white t-shirt and set out permanent markers so that they can sign their classmates’ shirts. • Make a time capsule. Have each person bring something that has to do with their years in high school. Place this in a box and give to someone for safe keeping until the ten year reunion. • Play pin the mustache on the teacher. Blow up a picture from the yearbook of a favorite teacher, your teen will give you an idea of which one to use. • If it’s hot outside, a water balloon toss is always fun, (played just like and egg toss but not as messy). Choose the balloon colors to match the school colors. • Have a sign-in board. You can use a large scroll to keep the diploma theme or place pictures of as many of the classmates as you can find
around the edges of a large poster board. • Place the name of a teacher on a sticky label. When a guest comes in, stick it on their back. They have to ask other guests yes or no questions about the teacher and guess who it is by the end of the night. • Have a memory note station. Set up “note boxes” for each guest, and paper and pens to write notes to each other. The teens can write their memories of the other person down and stick it in their friend’s box. • Food, food, food!! Graduation cupcakes and “grandma’s meatballs” are a must. • Video tape the party! Place the video camera on a tripod and just let it roll. • Don’t try to have too many activities. Teens love to just get together, talk and listen to music. • Lastly, right before the party is ready to start, take time out to give your graduate a big hug and let the celebration begin! In closing, whether it’s a small family affair, a simple open house or a full blown event with all the trimmings, don’t forget that the success is in the planning.

Registering Last Minute for Summer Camps?
Here Is What Parents Need To Know To Stay Stress-Free. You’ve been a little busy getting your child to games and recitals, making sure assignments get turned in, and preparing lunches. Somehow May has snuck up on you! Now you realize that there are only a few weeks left until summer and you haven’t registered for summer camps yet. Don’t worry, PLAY Performing Arts is sharing this guide to last-minute summer camp planning to help you avoid stress while making this an amazing ‘not bummer summer’ for your child.
Identify Your Child’s Interest. It may seem overwhelming but there are only seven to nine weeks of summer that you may need to find camps. Start with what you already know about how your child likes to spend time. Make a list of your child’s top 10 interests. Do it today while waiting in car line and then ask for child’s feedback on the drive home. What made the list? Is it music, singing, acting, Hamilton, or Harry Potter? If so check out our fresh and fun music and theatre summer camps at playstpete.com/summercamp.

Find Out About Camps. Start by finding out if any of the organized activity that your child has been involved in the last year are offering summer camps? Next, take to social media and post that you’re looking for camps related to your child’s top 10 interests. Specifically list the interests and ask for dates of camps. Ask for friends and family to share any camps that they’ve already registered. While you’re waiting for replies to your post you can take a look through Gulf Coast Family Newspaper’s Summer Camp Guide and advertisements for summer camps where you’ll find PLAY Performing Arts listed.
Make a Camp List. Putting together a simple list of the camps you’ve found about will help you manage the registration process and avoid realizing later in summer that you’ve double booked against a planned vacation. Your list should include columns for child’s interest, camp names, dates, cost, and contact info. Also note if any friends have registered or are interested in a camp. Someone you know has probably already registered for summer camp with PLAY Performing Arts. www.gulfcoastfamily.org
You may feel like being late in the summer camp registration game has totally put you at a disadvantage but you still may be able to negotiate for a spot or even on pricing. If you’re asking about multiple weeks of camp or even registering siblings then you may have leverage that you didn’t realize. Only have one child to register for one week? No worries. If you know some-

Zoo-Rescued Florida Panther Adjusting to Life After Amputation An endangered Florida panther, named Walter, is moving from his hospital room to life in a customized panther habitat at ZooTampa at Lowry Park after a year-long recovery from a lifethreatening injury and amputation. Found with his left foot caught in a snare in Highlands County, the male panther was brought to the Zoo by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials. Unable to save the rare big cat’s front paw, the veterinarians treated the injury and provided daily oversight to help Walter recover and learn to walk again.
Walter, whose name comes from a philanthropic donor supporting the Zoo’s wildlife conservation efforts, cannot survive in the wild with three paws, so he will have a permanent home at ZooTampa. To ease his transition and ensure he can enjoy being active without risking re-injury, the panther habitat will have modifications made to best accommodate him and his limitations. This week, Walter will be introduced to his new home and will be monitored how he adapts. To further help his transition, Walter will remain in his indoor habitat until he is comfortable with his new surroundings.

“We are proud to be a source for panther rehabilitation and provide these cats the critical and specialized care they need in order to thrive,” said Ray Ball, D.V.M., Vice President of Medical Sciences and Senior Veterinarian at ZooTampa. “Florida panthers are an integral species in our native ecosystem and Walter is a great ambassador for his species. We are thrilled with his progress and recovery.” Walter could eventually join two other rescued panthers in the habitat in the Zoo’s Florida area where guests can see Florida native animals. Walter joins Lucy, who was found as an orphaned cub, and Micanopy, who was rescued last year. Since 1988, ZooTampa has rescued and rehabilitated 13 endangered Florida panthers, seven within the last six years. The Zoo continues to expand its capacity to provide excellent long-term care to Florida’s threatened
and endangered animals, including panthers, manatees, and Key deer. “Our team is deeply committed to the conservation of our state’s endangered wildlife and helping people understand their role in protecting these animals. We are proud of our collaboration with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials to save each one of these amazing animals, like Walter,” said ZooTampa at Lowry Park’s CEO Joe Couceiro. “Seeing rescued animals that are endangered in Florida is part of the unique guest experience offered at ZooTampa.”

Benefits of Summer Travel
With summer approaching it seems an appropriate time to discuss the benefits of summer travel and fun. In general, travel broadens our understanding of the world. It helps to develop a child’s background knowledge and an interest in new experiences. Resources can vary from family to family and even from year to year but the benefits of family travel are not relative to the budget. Fun does not have to be expensive. The benefits of family travel include a reboot and change from the routine, extended time as a family to strengthen relationships, and the opportunity to learn
by Dr. Kira Wilson
and experience new things together while making lifetime memories.
Reboot and Change the Routine
One benefit of summer travel is the opportunity to reboot. We all need a recharge every now and then, including our children after a long school year. A change of scenery and routine for a week or two, allows the family to reassess priorities and reflect on what is important. Wherever you go, I encourage you to unplugno television or computers, no Facebook or smart
phones. If that seems like an impossible task, try unplugging during the day and only using devices in the evening, or unplug every other day if you are gone for more than a week. Family interaction is significantly more valuable, but unplugging some is better than not unplugging at all. Do it together so everyone is unplugged at the same time. Take along a great book to read as a family—either in the car or in the evening. This is a sure way to reboot! Go to LifeandLearning.net for some ideas.
Strengthen Family Relationships
Another benefit of summer travel is the opportunity to strengthen family relationships. Siblings, who may not “play” together during the school year, learn to enjoy each other’s company when other distractions are eliminated. Something as simple as a nature walk or a day at the beach (no cost) can be fun on an extended trip. Playing games as a family and having conversation in the evening without interruptions, can also help to strengthen the family bond.

Lastly, family travel provides an opportunity to learn and experience something new together. Maybe it’s white water rafting, or jet skiing, or hiking in the mountains. This experience will help to build lifetime memories that will be shared again and again. On a trip to Oregon a few years back, my family went white water rafting. Prompted by our guide, we jumped off a bridge together into freezing water! I assure you this is not something I would have done on my own – but it was a family activity and I was the mom! It was a once in a lifetime experience that we will always memory. Summer is on its way. Start planning that family vacation. Be safe and have fun! Dr. Kira Wilson is the Director of Covenant Academy in Pinellas County and the Founder of Life and Learning, an educational blog for parents (LifeandLearning.net). With more than 35 years in Christian education, her passion is to encourage and equip teachers and parents to develop in children a love for learning and a love for God. She cherishes family time with her husband, children, and two grandchildren.

5 tips to prepare your child for braces by Dr. Nick Reynolds, Northeast Orthodontics If your child is about to start orthodontic treatment, chances are they’ll have a lot of questions. What will braces feel like? Will they hurt? Will they still be able to eat their favorite foods? What will their friends say? It’s important both you and your child go into the treatment journey calm and confident. Here are five tips to help you prepare your child for getting braces, and put them at ease about the process.
1. Discuss treatment options with your child
There are plenty of options out there when it comes to orthodontic treatment, but it’s best to talk to your orthodontist about the most suitable options and treatment plan for your child. Usually metal braces are the best option for children and teens. As well as being reliable, they’re also a costeffective way to straighten your child’s teeth, and your child can customize them with different colors. Having an open discussion with your child about why they need braces and what it will achieve. Do some research together and encourage them to ask the orthodontist questions about the treatment plan and why it’s the best option for them.
2. Talk through what they can expect before their braces are fitted
It’s perfectly normal for children to feel nervous about having braces fitted. You can ease some of their nerves by letting them know that fitting metal braces is a very straightforward procedure. The small brackets are glued to their teeth and then connected with a thin wire before colorful elastic o-rings are placed over the top (if they want). They’ll need to come back for appointments with the orthodontist to have the wire adjusted, which will gradually straighten their teeth.
3. Stock up on soft foods
While having braces fitted shouldn’t be painful in itself, the light pressure the braces put on your child’s teeth might cause them some mild discomfort for the first couple of days. Soft foods like rice, pasta, ice cream, yoghurt or mashed potato, and liquid meals like soup will help to keep their energy up without having to chew too hard during the initial settling in period. Chilled foods also have the added benefit of soothing sore mouths, especially if the bracket starts to rub, so make sure your fridge is wellstocked!
4. Have plenty of orthodontic wax on hand
While your child gets used to their braces, the brackets might irritate or cause sores on the
inside of their mouth. Orthodontic wax (also known as ‘braces wax’ or ‘dental wax’) is an easy way to make your child’s braces more comfortable. Simply roll it in your fingertips to soften it, and then press it onto the part of the bracket that’s causing the problem. The wax will form a protective layer that stops the bracket from rubbing. As well as keeping it on hand around the house, it’s a good idea to give your child their own supply.
5. Focus on the benefits of braces
with you every step of the way to make sure that your orthodontic care is as comfortable, convenient, and rewarding as possible.
While a year or two might not seem a long time to adults, for a kid it can seem like forever. Gentle reminders that wearing braces is a temporary measure can help to build your child’s confidence. If your child is frustrated by the amount of time they’ll need to wear their braces, let them know that braces are meant to be a permanent fix, not a quick one. The main thing is that they know it’ll all be worth it in the long run, when they have straight teeth and a confident smile!
Dr. Nick Reynolds
“Since as long as I can remember, it’s been my goal to pursue a career in which I can work with my hands, help someone everyday, be artistic, strive for perfection, and provide for my community. Orthodontics is the perfect marriage of all those things. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else! My goal at Northeast Orthodontics is to provide the children and adults of St. Petersburg with handsome and beautiful smiles while providing first class service, state of the art care, and a friendly atmosphere.”

Preparing for an Emergency in Your Home by Charles A. Welborn, MD, MPH, FAAP, FACEP Medical Director, After Hours Pediatrics Urgent Care As part of National Emergency Medical Services Week (May 15-21), May 18th will honor Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC). Emergency care for children has changed over the past several years with new standards for child-sized equipment, child-directed treatment regimens and specialized training for 911 providers on how to care for children. The 911 system is designed to provide emergency care to those with life threatening conditions or in life threatening
Achieve Your
situations. In order to assist these pre-hospital providers to best care for your child in an emergency, here are a few hints to help you be prepared ahead of time: 1. If your child takes any medications, it is important to keep an up-to-date list of the name of the medicine, how much your child takes and how often they take it.
3. Keep a list of important documents, such as allergies, insurance coverage, guardianship documents and immunization records, etc. All of these items can be place in an envelope on top of your refrigerator so they are easily accessible in an emergency.
At LIFT ACADEMY, all children are celebrated as unique and special individuals. Our experienced, compassionate staff are dedicated to uncovering each student’s gifts, developing confidence and nurturing academic and social success.
Maximum Potential
4. Think ahead about in what type of situations you may need to call 911. Remember, 911 should be reserved for true emergencies. Examples include your child not being able to breath, being unresponsive, losing consciousness after a fall or bleeding that you cannot stop. These represent potential life threatening conditions for which your child may need an immediate intervention. You should not activate the 911 system if your child has a fever, bumped their head while running but did not lose consciousness, or is crying a lot. None of these conditions is life threatening. In these instances, you may want to take your child to his or her pediatrician or pediatric urgent care facility for evaluation.
• Serving students ages 5 to 18+ • Challenging curriculum • Warm, bully-free environment • Small, neuro-diverse classrooms • Individualized instruction • Before & after school care • Social skills development • PLSA, McKay & Step-Up accepted
5. Take basic first aid classes so you can learn how to take care of your child’s non-life threatening conditions.

Hopefully you will never need to call 911, but you should always be prepared none-the-less. Here are a few more things to keep in mind to help 911 find you: • Your house number should be large and easily visible from the street. • If activating the 911 system at night, turn on lights so it is easier to find your residence. • Gather the emergency documents listed above. During National Emergency Medical Services Week, we recognize members of the 911/emergency response system for the dedication and life-saving services they bring to our communities. Being prepared for an emergency is as important as knowing how to access 911 and it can help 911 providers do their best job.

Beyond the Holocaust: A Mother’s and Son’s Amazing Journey The story of Garmaine and Sol Pitchon It was 1942 and Garmaine was only sixteen. Only sixteen years old when her entire family – her mother and five sisters and herself – were forced to leave their home along with thousands of other confused and terrified families.
would mean. The only comfort was that they were together. But that would soon change. As the train arrived at the now infamous Nazi concentration camp known as Auschwitz, Garmaine’s family was immediately shattered. Her mother and sisters were led away, presumably to the gas chambers. They killed three thousand in the gas chambers that day. She would never see them again. Garmaine was put in a group of three hundred teenage girls and held in block ten. The living conditions were unimaginable. This block was known as the experimental block where the young girls were saved for medical experiments. Garmaine was in shock. She had just lost her entire family and now she was all alone. A sixteen-yearold girl, not knowing her fate, but fearing the worst.
Garmaine had already witnessed the cruelty of the Nazis when she watched her father being killed right in front of her by a German soldier. As the family was herded like cattle into a crowded boxcar, their destination was unknown; and, although they were told that they were headed for Poland to be given homes and to work on a farm where they could earn some much needed money, the horrible reality was that they would soon join so many others whose lives would be tragically and horribly ended for one reason: they were Jewish and they were an unwanted people. Garmaine was so scared. She had no idea what was happening or where they were taking her family. They traveled for eight days with no food or water. Garmaine’s mother tried to comfort the family; but they had heard stories of what this day
Garmaine’s fears were soon realized as she was led into a small dark operating room where she would be confronted by the infamous Angel of Death, Doctor Josef Mengele. Without anesthesia, Mengele began an operation to remove Garmaine’s reproductive organs. He had already removed one of Garmaine’s ovaries when airplanes from the Allied Forces began a bombing raid. Mengele ran away to hide – but first instructed an imprisoned Jewish doctor who was assisting with surgery to finish the job.
sons who married and gave them eight grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Simon and Garmaine named their first born son Solomon. Solomon “Sol” Pitchon. Today, Sol Pitchon and his mother live right here in the Tampa Bay area. Sol, a Christian psychotherapist, currently serves as CEO of several crisis pregnancy centers, here in the Tampa Bay area, that offer assistance to women experiencing unplanned pregnancies. Sol also oversees several other family ministries through New Life Solutions, which all help to support and build up the family. “What I am trying to do is connect the dots,” Sol Pitchon said. “My mom was saved from the holocaust of World War II and now I am trying to help save children from the holocaust of abortion. God has a plan, a purpose, a calling, and a destiny
for every child no matter their race, background, or circumstances. And I am living proof that God can still work in impossible situations!” Because of Garmaine’s horrible ordeal, Sol’s very birth is a miracle in and of itself; but because of Sol’s commitment and the commitment of so many other caring people here in the Tampa Bay area, miracles are happening every day. “Because we are called for such a time as this,” commented Sol, “today’s holocaust of abortion is being replaced by miracles of life. One day at a time, one life at a time.” To read more about Garmaine and Sol, visit www.newlifesolutions.org.
It was as if an Angel of Life had come to Garmaine. Instead of completing the surgery, the Jewish doctor decided to leave her remaining ovary intact; but he made her promise two things: one, that she would hide her cycle so that no one would know what he had done; and, two, that she would name her first son after him. Garmaine kept both promises. Three more years would pass before Garmaine was freed from her captors. She met and married Simon, another holocaust survivor. Garmaine did not know if she would ever be able to have children of her own; but the Lord blessed, and she and Simon had four

with Jim Daly Q: I’ve been out of college for four years, and I’m watching many of my peers getting everything they want — good jobs, nice homes, world travel, etc. But they still seem unhappy, at least to me. Am I weird for wanting to take things slower? Jim: We’re surrounded by the danger signs of a world moving too fast. From microwaves to fast food, computers to mobile phones, we’ve become accustomed to easy and immediate results. The demand to produce more in less time is increasing, and the ingredients we need to live wellrounded lives are being stripped away. That brings problems. The first is an attitude of impatience and entitlement. Our society wants what it wants, and it wants it right now. We’ve forgotten that authentic success can’t be rushed; it often takes hard work over a long period of time. But when people lose sight of this, they take shortcuts to achieve maximum results with minimal effort. Consider
INSTANT GRATIFICATION WEAKENS OUR CHARACTER The faster our world moves, the more diligent we must be to pursue not only success, but character as well. As one writer expressed it: “We all want to be, but few of us are willing to become.” So, are you “weird”? No — I think you’re wise.
the athletes caught in doping scandals, or individuals hoping to lose weight without eating right or exercising. The list could go on and on. A second problem with instant gratification is that it weakens our character. Building success slowly gives us a chance to develop as people. And as our character is strengthened, so is our ability to handle success. Many people have raced to the top, only to lose it all because they lacked the character to handle the responsibility their success demanded.
TEACHING KIDS TO GO BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY Q: What do you think about paying our school-aged children for doing household tasks? As a child, I always received an allowance if I did my chores. But my husband believes that kids need to work without being paid; he says that’s just part of being a family. Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: There’s no right or wrong answer here. Some parents believe in
paying an allowance, others pay their kids for individual chores. Still others don’t pay anything at all but give their children money for purchases based on their overall attitude and helpfulness. Whatever system you decide to adopt, it’s important to remember that one of your major goals is to prepare your children to live in the “real world” — the world of work, taxes, giving and investments. In that world, nobody is going to pay them for making their beds or taking out the trash. On the other hand, they will be

paid for things like managing a group of employees, tuning up somebody’s car or selling a pair of shoes to a very demanding customer. With that in mind, here’s what I suggest. Children ought to perform certain tasks around the house simply because they are part of the family. This could include jobs such as taking care of their own rooms, picking up their toys, helping to prepare meals, washing their own clothes, and yes, even taking out the trash.
On the other hand, it’s fine to pay children for chores that demand more time and energy — contributions to the life of the household that “go beyond the call of duty.” This list might include activities like mowing the lawn, washing the car, or, in the case of a responsible teenager, baby-sitting a younger brother or sister for an entire Saturday afternoon.
this is motherhood
We build circles of women who love each other like family, because raising humans is beautiful and hard, and having each other to lean on is life-giving.
One final note: Helping kids learn how to give, save and spend their money is just as important as teaching them how to earn it.
WHEN DO I NEED TO JUST CHILL OUT AND WHEN DO I NEED TO DISCIPLINE? Q: I’m fairly new at the parenting game. Are there times when I should simply chill out and refrain from disciplining a kid who misbehaves? Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: To some extent, child discipline is just common sense and more art than science — a skill acquired gradually and almost imperceptibly. So, relax, take it one day at a time, and allow the parent-child relationship to unfold naturally. As the years go by, you’ll perfect your skills in a very normal and intuitive way. In the meantime, the only kind of behavior that merits disciplinary action is willful disobedience. Otherwise, there are some rather obvious situations where traditional disciplinary action is not appropriate: • Normal exploratory behavior in infants and toddlers. Little ones need the freedom to discover their environment without getting their hands slapped. Childproof your home by keeping fragile items out of their reach. • Toilet training. This can’t be rushed. A harsh response to failure only creates confusion, anxiety and frustration for the child. • Bed-wetting. This physiological event is usually not under conscious control, and rarely (if ever) responds to rewards or punishment. • Accidents. Again, if the behavior wasn’t willful or intentional, it doesn’t call for discipline. But it’s fair and appropriate to require an older child to help clean up or repair, especially if carelessness was involved.

Extend grace for grumpiness when your child simply doesn’t feel well, is “hangry” or tired. • Less-than-perfect report cards. If a child’s school performance is falling short of his or her capability, more selfdiscipline may be the answer. But kids shouldn’t be punished for not having straight A’s. • Performance in sports. If the child chooses to engage in sports and cares deeply about succeeding, parental support and encouragement is extremely important. But they shouldn’t be forced to play against their will or beyond their skill level.

Speak Life by Kenny McNatt “You will never amount not to anything”. For those not familiar with that phrase, allow me to translate, you are nothing and you will never be successful in life. From time to time I can still hear those words echo through the halls of my mind.
Kenny is a husband, a father, and a follower of Christ. He is a graduate of Southeastern University, Lakeland, Florid. He curently serves as the Lead Pastor at Seminole Assembly of God.

relationship begins with a parent that is working to make themselves spiritually healthy. Jesus made a great statement that was recorded in Luke 6:45. The amplified Bible says it this way, “The [intrinsically] good man produces what is good and honorable and moral out of the good treasure [stored] in his heart; and the [intrinsically] evil man produces what is wicked and depraved out of the evil[in his heart]; for his mouth speaks from the overflow of his heart.” Your words are the overflow of your heart. The first step in speaking life giving words is to have life in you. I look at the words I speak to those around me in order gauge what’s happening in my inner life. Too Young to App? Not only are mobile devices more widespread than ever, but the folks using them are younger than ever, too. How young? Well, a study conducted at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia discovered that some little ones are using smartphones and tablets before they can talk or even walk. The center surveyed hundreds of parents, discovering that 14 percent of
1-year-olds and 26 percent of 2-yearolds spend at least an hour a day using mobile media – watching TV shows, playing games, using apps. By age 4, that figure climbs to nearly 40 percent. The study’s author, Dr. Hilda Kabali, said that accepted guidelines recommend parents limit children’s screen time to two hours a day. “But most children

aren’t spending time on TV anymore. They’re using tablets and smartphones.” “Prolonged engagement in such activities limit parental interaction and affects a child’s capacity for social development,” Kabali added. “Not to mention that too much sedentary entertainment can contribute to obesity.”

According to new research published in JAMA Pediatrics, nearly two-thirds of U.S. high school students reported trying alcohol, almost 35 percent reported drinking in the previous 30 days, and more than 21 percent reported binge drinking – having six or more drinks on a single occasion. The study concluded that alcohol advertising that reaches young people, particularly on TV is one cause of underage drinking. It can help lead nondrinkers to begin drinking and experienced drinkers to consume more. And the more receptive a viewer is to alcohol ads, the greater the risk of problem drinking in the future.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium is kicking off sea turtle nesting season with Sea Turtle Awareness Day on Saturday, May 12 at Pier 60 Clearwater Beach. The event includes a beach cleanup followed by educational acitivities and stations from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. The public is invited to help clean the beach for the sea turtle hatchlings and nesting females beginning at 8 a.m. Picking up trash eliminates items that may entangle both hatchlings and adults. Trash, holes, sandcastles and other obstructions can prevent adult sea turtles from locating the best place to nest and can also trap sea turtle hatchlings on the beach, preventing them from reaching the water.

The beach cleanup will be followed by free and fun educational activities with Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s sea turtle team, focusing on sea turtle nesting and conservation. Prizes and give-away items will be distributed to participants while supplies last. From May – October the Clearwater Marine Aquarium staff monitors loggerhead sea turtle nesting along 13 miles of beach in North Pinellas County. Sea turtles nest at night and can be impeded by artificial lights, chairs, sandcastles, toys, and trash, all of which can prevent adults from nesting successfully and avert hatchlings from reaching the sea. Sea Turtle Awareness Day aims to educate the public about the importance of lighting, keeping the beaches clean, and protecting this endangered species. Advanced registration for the beach cleanup is recommended. Participants can sign up on CMA’s website, www.seewinter.com. www.gulfcoastfamily.org
