The great blue heron is a beautiful bird easily spotted along the shores of the Gulf Coast. This magnificent bird has a wingspan of 6 feet while in flight and can fish during the night as well as the day. Tall and statuesque when wading in water searching for prey, graceful and swift in flight, the blue heron is truly one of North America’s most majestic wild birds. Cover Photo by Jack Swindle

Wintering on the Gulf’s sunny shores Sand, sun, great food and great company. What more could you want? Sometimes, you want a taste of home. Snowbird Clubs in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach do a great job hosting activities and gatherings to help you feel at home in your winter home away from home. The clubs also spend time working with local organizations to raise money for our beachside libraries, fire departments and the Gulf Coast Zoo. Connecting with your state Snowbird Club is a great way to keep active, meet new friends and find all that Alabama’s Gulf Coast has to offer.

Indiana

Illinois

The Illinois Club will host a welcome back coffee at the Orange Beach Senior Center on Jan. 5 at 10 a.m. Call Gail Brueggeman at 618-580-4407. The club will meet the second and fourth Fridays in January and February and March 9 at GT’s On the Bay (26189 Canal Rd, Orange Beach). Doors open at 7:45 a.m. RSVP: 630-7388717. Cost, $13. The Illinois Snowbird Club originated in 1997 when approximately 40 to 45 residents from the Bloomington-Normal area met at a local restaurant for coffee and to discuss the possibility of forming a state club. Today they have a total of 458 members who enjoy wintering in the Gulf Coast area. The members represent 130 towns and cities in Illinois. The overall theme of the club is to make the Gulf Coast community a better place to live and vacation through participation in social and cultural events. Along with the social aspects, the club has direct involvement with the Snowbird Brat Fest, the Gulf Shores Mardi Gras Parade and the Snowbird Play.

Indiana Club meets for breakfast at 8 a.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays through March 1 at Luna’s (25689 Canal Road, Orange Beach). Speakers are at every meeting. Cost to join: $5. Breakfast is $10 including meal, tax and tip. For details contact Bev Walker at 513-519-9645 or bwalker@ etczone.com. Indiana has a rich tradition of being “Winter Visitors” on the Gulf Coast. Is it the winter doldrums in that great lakes state that motivates so many Hoosiers to skedaddle out of the state to warmer climates during the winter months? The Indiana Snowbird Club was finally formed in 1996 - 1997. The first formation meeting was held in the old American Legion Hall on AL 59. That building is no longer there, but from the few individuals who were there, the club was born. The club is in session only during the winter months that visitors are present, and since many Hoosiers do not even arrive until after Jan. 1, they have settled on five regular meetings per season, beginning in January and ending in March. The club has met in several different places over the years, but they were the first Snowbird Club to make arrangements at Lulu’s, on the north bank of the Intracoastal Waterway on Alabama 59 in Gulf Shores. There is an average attendance at the breakfast buffets of approximately 160 members, who hail from all parts of Indiana. Last year, the club had 217 dues-paying members. Some live permanently in the South but still claim their heritage as a Hoosier. They create a new membership list every year with members from every part of the state of Indiana. The club is one of the remaining smaller clubs that meets regularly. It’s an interesting thing to observe, but Indiana has some of the most unusual names for towns of any of the Great Lakes states. That’s one of the conversational subjects batted around during the gettogethers. From “Fishers,” Indiana to “Eureka,” Indiana (shouted by everyone who manages to find the place). There are lots of Indian names for towns, too, such as “Shipshewana” and many others. The beaches are the big attraction here for Hoosiers, as it is for other states. Some of the members spend the whole winter months in RVs in the state park, or in other well recognized RV resort parks. It’s hard to beat some of the friendships established in RV travel. Somehow, when travel brings you to the Gulf Coast of Alabama, where there is no ice and snow, folks just think they have found their own particular corner of the world. The decision to come back or to stay here is made, and many have begun a second home here.

Michigan Iowa Iowa Snowbirds invite Iowans and guests to attend their breakfasts and the cocktail parties held from January through early March 2018. Iowa Snowbird Club Co-Presidents, Steve and Chris Hedlund, have set the Snowbird breakfasts for the second and fourth Wednesdays in January and February. The first Iowa “breakfast” will be at OWA, a change from previous announcements. The “meet and greet” coffee and donuts gathering will be Wednesday, Jan. 10 at the Groovy Goat from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. The cost will be $6 for an informal coffee time around small tables. Reservations can be made on the website, Iowa-AlabamaGulfCoastSnowbirds.org or by calling Shari DeCook, 641-521-0929 or Sharon Hesselmann, 563-357-2721. Everyone is welcome to attend this get acquainted event. The Iowa Club will meet for their regular breakfast meetings Wednesdays, Jan. 24, Feb. 7 and 21 at the Perdido Beach Resort (27200 East Perdido Beach Boulevard, Orange Beach). The cost will be $10 per person with reservations to be made on the website. Door prizes are awarded and a 50/50 drawing is held at each regular breakfast. While in the Gulf communities, the Iowa club members donate to various local charities such as the zoo, libraries, fire departments and others through their activities. Chairmen of these fundraising events will review the 2018 plans and will sign up volunteers to assist in the activities. There is no membership fee and all Iowans and their guests are welcome at all club events. Cocktail parties are scheduled on Fridays, Jan. 26 and Feb. 23 from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Caribe (Building C, 28103 Perdido Beach Boulevard, Orange Beach). No RSVP is required. Bring a dish to share and your own beverage. Club members may check the website, Iowa-AlabamaGulfCoastSnowbirds.org for updates and a listing of activities available in the Gulf area. Golf sign-ups for 2018 are through the website.

The Michigan Club will hold five meetings in 2018: Jan. 4, Jan. 18, Feb. 1, Feb. 15 and March 1. Meetings are held at the Erie Meyer Center in Gulf Shores starting at 10 a.m. The doors open at 8:30 a.m. and coffee and donuts are available at 9 a.m. The meetings include entertainment, announcements of club activities and door prizes. Membership to participate in the meetings costs only $5 per person for the entire year. At each meeting the club sells door prize tickets for $1 each. You have to have a ticket to win a door prize. You can buy as many as you wish. The income from this helps to pay for the Meyer Center rental cost. Established in 1995 the purpose of the Michigan Club in south Alabama is to provide activities, communications and fellowship for current and former residents of the state of Michigan.

Minnesota The Minnesota Club meets weekly through mid-March in their “home away from home” state of Alabama. Breakfast meetings start weekly in January on Tuesdays at GT’s on the Bay (26189 Canal Rd, Orange Beach). Doors open at 7:30 a.m. Breakfast costs $10. Info on golf, upcoming events and club updates can be found online at www.mnal.org. The club consists of a group of Minnesotans from all over the state that visit Alabama, primarily during the winter season. Why would anyone want to leave Minnesota in the summer? It is the land of 10,000 lakes, at least 10,000 mosquitoes and boast that it has the most golfers per capita in the entire U.S. They meet as a group November through March to golf, volunteer and just plain have fun. Minnesota club members along with winter visitors from other states, are active and participate in many fundraising activities that benefit local libraries, fire departments, the Gulf Coast Zoo and other organizations. They are always looking for volunteers to help with these events. Join the Facebook page “Minnesota Alabama Club” for news, notes and comments from members and friends. January 2018 ● Beachin’ 11

New York Missouri The Missouri Snowbirds spend January, February and for some lucky folks, March also, in the Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and Perdido Key, Fla., area. The first club meeting is at 9 a.m. on Jan. 3 at Phoenix V condominiums. A welcome back party is at 6 p.m. on Jan. 6 at Phoenix V. The club will meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. on Jan. 10, 24, Feb. 7 and 21 at Perdido Beach Resort (27200 Perdido Beach Blvd, in Orange Beach). Business meetings are held at Phoenix V and will alternate with breakfast. Members participate in a golf scrambles every Wednesday afternoon. Members also participate in additional activities like a chili cook-off, game night, trivia night, Brat Fest, pancake breakfast, Low County Boil at the Zoo and more. Members also participate in a few activities in and around the St. Louis area the rest of the year. For more information visit the club online at www.MoSnowbirds.org.

New York State Snowbirds have been gathering for social times since 2000. The 2018 New York Snowbird Club will meet for lunch on Jan. 12, 26; Feb. 9, 23 and March 9 at Ginny Lane Bar and Grill (4851 Wharf Pkwy E., Orange Beach). Registration begins at 11 a.m. and lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. from a special menu. Dues of $1 per person will be collected at the door. Reservations are required. Contact Frank and Tracy at 585-748-0432 or email nysnowbirds@ gmail.com, no later than three days before the scheduled luncheon. The New York State Snowbirds have formed an informal group of past and present “Empire State” residents who live year round or winter in south Baldwin County, Perdido Key or the greater Pensacola area. The participants are proud to promote their roots, representing all parts of the state: The Big Apple, Long Island, Hudson Valley, Catskills, Capital District, Adirondacks, St. Lawrence Region, Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, Genesee Valley, Niagara Region, etc. Their common thread is the love of a warm climate, the supportive, friendly environment, the lasting relationships found here on the Florida-Alabama Gulf Coast and the lack of interest in the winter weather of their northern home state.

North Dakota / South Dakota The Gulf Shores based North and South Dakota Snowbird Club meets every second and fourth Tuesday morning in January, the second Tuesday in February and the fourth Monday and second Tuesday in March at 8:30 a.m. at Luna’s (25689 Canal Road, Orange Beach) for breakfast with a meeting to follow at 9 a.m. Events include pot lucks, dinner at local restaurants, etc. and collecting items for the local food pantry. Dates are Jan. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; Feb. 7, 14, 28 and March 7. There is a “Eat and Talk” at 5 p.m. at O’Charley’s in Foley, on select Mondays (TBD). The members come from all over Pennsylvania. They stay at the state park, in rented houses and in condos all over southern Baldwin County. Some Pennsylvanians have been coming for 20 years. Others are relatively new to the white sands and warm weather. At least, there is no snow to shovel! The club started with 20 folks in 1999. Membership reached 75 in their second year. There are no officers, dues, by-laws or constitution. They just like to meet and eat. The club does participate with the other Snowbirds in philanthropies.

The biggest party in the south

If it’s your first winter on the Gulf Coast or your tenth, Mardi Gras parades and celebrations should be at the top of your to do list. Parades and Mardi Gras balls are held by secret societies across Baldwin County and Mobile. While anyone can attend a parade, often you must be invited by a member of a Mardi Gras society to attend their spectacular ball. When you attend a parade, bring a chair to wait in and a bag to carry the armfuls of goodies you will catch. Mardi Gras society members throw toys, strings of beads and candy to the massive crowds that line the parade routes. Want to know more about the history of Mardi Gras and 2018’s parades and balls? Beginning Pastel with Tommy Vogel Jan. 10 – Feb. 14

6-week class on Wednesdays only Time: 10 a.m. – noon Price: $140 (includes supplies)

30 Beachin’ ● January 2018

Tommy Vogel received his first set of pastels at age 12. He still has them. And with those pastels, and many, many more, Vogel has crafted a distinct style that uses rich, broad color and covers a wide range of realist subject matter, from tropical to still life. As a pre-teen, Vogel was initially on the path to become a Lutheran minister. After several years of schooling, he decided that wasn’t the right path for him. Soon after high school he was drafted by the Army and was stationed in Germany. Through each move and transition, Vogel continued to create. He dedicated to his art full-time in 2004 as a self-taught artist. Now he creates and helps to train budding artists. “Learning to do anything well is not an overnight accomplishment,” Vogel said. When people ask the key to creating fine art, Vogel always tells them it requires practice and more practice.

Beginning Watercolor with Mary Lou Nicolai Jan. 11 – Feb. 15 6-week class on Thursdays only Time: 9 a.m. - noon Price: $160 (does not include supplies)

Watercolor Fun with Mary Lou Nicolai Jan. 13 - March 3

8 weeks, Saturdays only Two-hour workshop Time: TBA Price: $75 (includes supplies)

Mary Lou Nicolai left an entire career behind, in nursing, to follow her passion in art. She returned to college, studied watercolor, drawing and airbrush. She earned a degree in graphic design and illustration. The degree was earned. But what she became was free to capture the world as she saw in glide across her canvas. Many students have worked with Nicolai in previous classes, learning techniques in her “drawing on the right side of the brain classes.” This winter, the awardwinning professional watercolor artist shares some of the secrets of creating with watercolors. Recently she has begun experimenting with transparent water media pours. The unpredictability of the action of water helps create the painting. Nicolai has said she loves the exciting tranquil beauty of these paintings and she is thrilled to show them to students.

Intro to Oil Painting (for beginners) with Joanne Hall Jan. 15 – Feb. 5

4 week class on Mondays only Time: 9 a.m. - noon Price: $140 (does not include supplies)

Joanne Hall has been teaching oil painting to students on the Alabama Gulf Coast since 2013. Her own landscape masterpieces, many of which prominently feature Gulf Coast icons such as the Mobile Bay Lighthouse, serve to help teach students to capture the beauty of their surroundings as they see it, and feel it. “Painting is full of mystery and surprise! I love it when, in the process of painting, technique goes on autopilot and the painting takes on a life of its own. Imagination rules. Time is suspended. The subject reveals exquisite beauty. I aspire to express these moments in paint and share this joy with others,” she has said. Hall said she enjoys painting outside and feels there is no substitute for standing within the scene you want to capture in order to appreciate the light on the landscape’s forms. Hall is a Signature member of Artists of Northwest Arkansas. She exhibits and has won awards in both regional and local competitions.

Oil Paintings from Photographs with Craig Reynolds Feb. 12 – Feb. 14

Monday - Wednesday Time: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Price: $120 (does not include supplies)

Born and raised Gadsden, Al., Reynolds learned to draw and paint at an early age from his father, Leo Reynolds, also an artist. He left junior college to work in the steel mill and maintained a foothold in the art world by creating and selling art on the side. Eventually Reynolds became a member of the Dobbin Gallery at Kiawah Island, S.C., The Gale Gallery in New Orleans, the Renaissance Gallery In Tuscaloosa, and more recently in the Blue Phrog Gallery in Montevallo, the Fairhope Artist Gallery and the Gulf Coast Art Alliance Gallery. Reynolds and his wife retired to Gulf Shores where he continues his art career leading community art programs

and participating in local galleries and plein air events. His new passion is plein air painting which he began working with in 2006 and has traveled extensively since to attend plein air events. Much of Reynolds’ work and style focuses on “Old stuff, the patina, the rust, the weathered history and the scars that this old stuff tells,” he has said. Reynolds said every painting should tell a story and his works can best be categorized as representational impressionism. His current project is to reveal the hard work, hardships and history of the local shrimp industry through his artwork. January 2018 ● Beachin’ 31

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets 32 Beachin’ ● January 2018

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone number is 251.974.1514. Please say we sent you! www.anthonyjonesinc.net
