The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, City of Fairhope and Festival Committee have combined efforts to bring this Festival to you. We are proud that it has been named in the top 26 of the 100 Best Classic and Contemporary Crafts Shows in the nation by “Sunshine Artist Magazine” in 2011 and featured as a top event by the Alabama Bureau of Tourism & Travel. Celebrate spring, come to beautiful Fairhope: The 61st Annual Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope slated for March 15, 16, 17 Spring is nearing, and for many, it is their favorite season of the year. It couldn’t be nicer than in Fairhope where thousands of beautiful flowers, including azaleas, are in full bloom. The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce proudly announces the 61st Annual Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope, which is scheduled for March 15, 16 and 17. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and there is no admission charge. More than 200 exhibitors from throughout the nation will bring their best works to show and sell at this prestigious juried show. There will be live entertainment throughout the three-day event, and delicious cuisine will be served in the food court. It all takes place on the streets of beautiful downtown Fairhope. Last year, the event attracted more than 300,000 visitors to the area. The festival was chosen as one of the top 20 events in the southeast for March by the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and it was voted in the top 26 out of 100 Best Predominantly Classic & Contemporary Craft Shows in the nation by “Sunshine Artist Magazine.” The event is also one of the top 20 events selected by the Southeast Tourism Society. BRATS (Baldwin County Area Transportation System) will offer a shuttle service from the Plantation Point Shopping Center, Eastern Shore Village and Ecor Rouge Place Center. All of the parking is free, and the locations are less than a five-minute ride away. The shuttle ride costs only $2 one way. WHEN: March 15, 16, 17; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily
WHERE: Beautiful Fairhope, Ala. (on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay)
PARKING: To get to the festival, travel on Highway 98 South of I-10 to the Fairhope Avenue intersection. Free parking is available at Ecor Rouge Place Center, Plantation Pointe Shopping Center and Eastern Shore Village Center. Baldwin Rural Area Transportation System (BRATS) is providing a shuttle service to the festival site for $2 each way. Bike valet parking, behind the Fairhope Museum of History, is free. Handicapped parking is behind Julwin’s Restaurant.
WHY: A celebration of spring and of the arts; an opportunity to purchase the highest quality of arts and crafts from more than 200 exhibitors from all over the nation; to get a taste of unique and different cuisine at the food court; and enjoy wonderful entertainment. The 61st Annual Arts & Crafts Festival was voted by readers of “Sunshine Artist Magazine” in the top 26 out of 100 of the Best Predominantly Classic & Contemporary Craft Shows in the nation. And the Alabama Bureau of Tourism selected the festival as one of the top 20 in the state. The show is also one of the top 20 events for Southeast Tourism Society. More than 300,000 people visited the festival in 2012.
OTHER THINGS TO KNOW: • No admission is charged for the festival. • T-Shirts ($15 regular sizes / $18 for XXL), Posters ($5 unsigned / $10 signed) and Prints ($20) on sale at the Information Booth • Volunteers are needed to provide warm Southern hospitality to exhibitors • Local businesses “adopt an artist” • Live entertainment throughout the three-day event at the festival stage • Train Show at K-1 Center Saturday and Sunday • Spring Fever Chase on Saturday • Pet Adoption on Saturday at Compass Bank by Baldwin Humane Society and another at Greer’s for The Haven • Sponsor/Artists Awards Dinner - $14,500 cash awards • 20 Committees work all year to plan the annual event.

The 61st Annual Arts & Crafts Festival planning is underway: Volunteer committee readies for best show
The 61st Annual Arts & Crafts Festival planning committee is working hard to prepare for the best show ever. The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce event, scheduled for March 15, 16 and 17, is held in Fairhope the third weekend of March each year. More than 100 volunteers, representing service clubs, chamber businesses and individuals, participate in the event. More than 200 exhibitors from throughout the nation will bring their juried arts and crafts to this prestigious show. There will be live entertainment throughout the three-day event, and delicious cuisine will be served in the food court. It all takes place on the streets of beautiful downtown Fairhope, Ala. Last year the event attracted more than 300,000 visitors to the area. The festival was chosen as one of the top events in the state for March by the Alabama Bureau of Tourism & Travel, and it was voted as 26 out of 100 Best Predominantly Classic & Contemporary Craft Shows in the nation by “Sunshine Artist Magazine.” The show is also ranked in the top 20 by the Southeast Tourism Society. “The Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope has a national reputation for Southern hospitality displayed by our
wonderful committee, volunteers, the city and local businesses,” said Darrelyn Bender, president/CEO of the Chamber. “The economic impact of this festival is felt along the entire Eastern Shore.” One way companies and individuals can get their name out there and help the artist and craftsmen, is to participate in the Patron of the Arts Award program during the festival. All one has to do is agree ahead of time to purchase a minimum of $100 from one of the artists. Once purchased, a placard will be placed at the vendor’s booth and the artist will be able to display a ribbon in their honor. Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope ranks 26 out of 100 in ‘Sunshine Artist’s Magazine’ The Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope, an Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce event, has been honored by being chosen 26 of 100 of the Best Classic & Contemporary Crafts Shows in the nation by ‘Sunshine Artist Magazine.’ This is the 10th year the festival has been listed. The ranking was published in the magazine’s September issue featuring 200 of the Best Shows in the nation - 100 of the Best Classic & Contemporary Crafts Shows and 100 of the Fine Art & Design Shows. This is the 19th year the magazine, which the leading trade publication, surveyed and published its readers’ top-selling events. The survey requests various pieces of information such as actual sales totals at top shows, the art medium, price range, attendance, etc. Entering all the information into a database created the results comparing shows held nationwide. In addition, the special comments and rankings were reviewed as well as state reports, audit cards and letters. According to the festival planners, the 26th place ranking among the top 100 shows is a true accolade of a direct response to the attitude of the community and the warmth displayed by its residents. “We are so honored that more than 230 artists and craftsmen choose to participate in our show,� said

Debbie Floyd, chairman of the festival. “This is such a wonderful festival for such a small town. It’s amazing that we can bring so many people to the area. To be ranked so high in the nation really puts Fairhope on the map.� She added that the city lavishes tender loving care upon the show’s entry way and streets in anticipation, and merchants welcome the exhibitors with open arms, by inviting them to stop in for a cup of coffee or to freely use the restrooms. Floyd is one of more than 50 volunteers who go beyond the call to make the exhibitors feel at home. High school groups comb through the crowds throughout the three-day event to serve drinks and fruit, and they also booth-sit, so exhibitors can take a well-needed break. The Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope will be 61 years old in 2013. The festival takes place March 15, 16 and 17 in the streets of beautiful downtown Fairhope. The festival hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and there is no admission charge. “Not only are we able to showcase the hospitality and beauty of Fairhope and the entire Eastern Shore, we are extremely proud that our festival has such an economic impact (an estimated $8 million) each year,� said Darrelyn Bender, Chamber president. MEET DAVID TATE Official artist for the 61st Annual Arts & Crafts Festival The Planning Committee for the 61st Annual Arts & Crafts Festival has selected the official artwork to be printed on festival posters and T-shirts. The artwork was created by local artist David Tate and features the most popular site and destination in Fairhope, the Fairhope Municipal Pier and rose garden. The impressionistic acrylic painting is bright and colorful and is a scene depicting the view of the pier from the Henry George Park on the bluff. “That is my favorite view,” said Tate. “I enjoy the sunsets and listening to the Baldwin Pops perform there.” Tate’s work was chosen after a year of research by the committee to pick just the right work of art for the popular festival that brings an estimated 300,000 people to the downtown area for the three-day Eastern Shore Chamber Continued on next page

event, which takes place March 15, 16 and 17. “The moment I saw David’s work I knew that I wanted him to be this year’s festival artist,” said Debbie Floyd, festival chairman. “His paintings exhibit the calm and restful nature that exemplifies this wonderful little town called Fairhope. When I look at our poster, I can feel myself standing on the bluff with a summer breeze blowing through the trees. I hope everyone who sees it feels the same way.” A native of Columbus, Miss., Tate and his wife, Rhonda moved to Fairhope in 2003. The couple has been married for 42 years, and they have two grown children and one grandchild. Tate did not pursue a career as an artist until retiring from the retail industry, moving to Fairhope and finally taking art classes locally. Although he knew at a young age he could draw, the inspiration developed upon moving to the haven for artists. Tate said he spends many hours every day painting and has found his niche. His works are exhibited at the Fairhope Artists Gallery on South Section Street in Fairhope. During last year’s festival Tate said he sold more than

a dozen paintings. He will once again have new works on display during this year’s festival inside the Fairhope Artist Gallery. “I’m excited about having my work selected for the official artwork this year,” said Tate. “It makes me feel good any time someone is interested in my work.” The Arts & Crafts Festival is a juried fine arts and crafts show, which also features live local entertainment on the festival stage every hour during the festival. In addition, classic festival food is served in the festival food court. There is no admission fee to visit the festival and a shuttle service is provided by BRATS for $2 each way from the shopping centers at the intersection of Fairhope Avenue and Greeno Road. The festival is scheduled for March 15, 16, and 17. One of the favorite features of the Chamber’s premier event is the wonderful talent lineup on the festival stage. Submissions are being accepted now from local bands, dance troops and other types of entertainment. Groups and individuals wishing to perform in the 61st Annual Arts & Crafts Festival of Fairhope simply need to send an introduction letter detailing the type of talent or performance, CD or video and send it to the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce at P.O. Box 310, Daphne, Ala. 36526-0310. Once reviewed, entertainment committee members will notify chosen performers and complete the entertainment schedule, which offers live acts every hour on the hour during hours of operation throughout the event. All applications will be considered on a firstcome, first-served basis, as well as talent that is appropriate for a home-town, community-based festival. Judges for 61st Annual Arts & Crafts Festival Veronica Straus
Veronica Straus earned her BFA and MFA from Wayne State University in Detroit. She also attended USC in La Jolla, Calif. for painting and the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit for post-degree studies. Veronica began her career with General Motors in the budding area of industrial film making and has taught in Veronica Straus the humanities. Some of her current artistic directions include pastel drawing and creative quilting with painting and appliquĂŠ, wearable art and new media exploration. She actively exhibits her work in both juried and non-juried shows. Her work is also in the permanent collection of the State of Michigan. She
is currently chairperson of Design Works, a group of award-winning, practicing artists and a board member of Black Sheep Weavers, a fiber guild.
William Goodman
Since 1999, William Goodman has been creating mixed media and abstract paintings, collages and murals. Goodman has shown at exhibits and galleries in New York, Chicago, Washington D.C., LaJolla, Calif., Little Rock, Ark., Atlanta, Ga., New Orleans, and Jackson, Miss. Goodman is best known for his mixedWilliam Goodman media pieces, which infuse elements of photography, collage, abstract imagery and graphic design. Goodman’s many different experiences and the changes he faced inspire his artwork. He attempts to expose elements of the past, present and future in his paintings. As the pieces take shape, they go through processes of beautification, disruption and chaos, ultimately capturing the many layers of the human experience. Goodman resides and works in his hometown of Jackson, Miss.
Brooke Barttelbort
Brooke Barttelbort has always had a passion for the arts. Getting her hands on everything from glassblowing to illustration, photography to 3D animation—she has an appreciation for the life-long pursuit of each discipline. Currently working as a visual and multimedia designer at Jackson Family Wines in Brooke Barttelbort Santa Rosa, Calif., she finds the process of creating art to be one of the most rewarding parts of life. Brooke found her niche as a glassblower at the age of 15 at the nationally renowned Spanish Village in Balboa Park, San Diego, Calif. She was the youngest student ever selected for instruction by Andy Cohn. She completed her training and became a juried artist of the prestigious art center by the age of 18. She has won numerous awards in glass art. She is currently an active partner in Studio 19 in the Spanish Village and has a loyal following in the United States. Earning her BA with honors from the University of San Diego in 2007, she currently resides in San Francisco, Calif. and is attending the Academy of Art University completing her master’s in visual design. She also has her own successful freelance business as a visual designer, Lavender Ink.

We approach this year’s show with much of the same excitement and enthusiasm that previous festivals and tours shared. In 1997, the 45th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival was first named one of the top 200 Festivals in the United States by “Sunshine Artist Magazine.” The Festival has received this same honor in the following years. Artists who participate in shows all over the United States vote upon this award. In 2007, the show was ranked number 10. This past year, the show was ranked number 26. As one may see from this history, the Festival has changed in many ways; its exhibitors are no longer only locals; they come from across the United States. We no longer charge the exhibitors commission on their sales, just an entry fee. The number of visitors is now in six-digit figures and the activities taking place in conjunction with the Festival have grown by leaps and bounds. The Arts & Crafts Festival’s purpose remains the same: to promote good will and festivity to Fairhope and the Eastern Shore, to provide working capital for the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce and to exhibit for show and sale the highest quality artwork and craftsmanship available and to host the Festival in the loveliest area in the world.

Free Bike Valet at this year’s Arts and Crafts Festival A bicycle valet station will be available at this year’s Fairhope Art and Craft Festival. This free service is offered to any cyclist who wants to visit the festival by bike. The City of Fairhope’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and the Baldwin County Trailblazers are working together to organize this free and secure bicycle parking area. The bike valet area will be located adjacent to the handicapped parking area off North Bancroft Street and behind the Fairhope Museum. Volunteers will check in and oversee the bicycle parking area at the festival on March 15, 16, and 17. Both groups hope the valet station will offer visitors a safe and convenient place to keep their bikes while they enjoy the festival. The station will be open each day of the festival during normal festival hours. Volunteers that are interested in helping manage the station are encouraged to contact the Trailblazers at libbie@ thetrailblazers.org.

There are many ways the participants are honored during the Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope, an Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce event. One such honor is the Awards Dinner, where more than $14,500 in prize money is given to the best of the best. However, the best honor they receive is when visitors to the festival purchase their works. The planning committee for the 61st Annual Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope is offering a way patrons can further honor their favorite artists and craftsmen through the Patron Award Program. By doing so, the patrons themselves also receive recognition. It’s so simple. All one needs to do is contact the Chamber and sign up for the Patron’s Award Program and commit to purchase at least $100 worth of arts or crafts from one vendor. When those patrons visit the festival they will drop by the Chamber office in Fairhope and pick up a ribbon to be placed on their chosen vendor’s booth and a placard bearing their own name or the name of a business, which is also be placed at the vendor’s booth. Patrons may purchase works from any vendor they choose. All the money goes directly to the artist. The more patrons who commit, the more money that is guaranteed to be spent at the festival. “Each year we have about 50 patrons who commit to purchase $100 worth of work,” said Liz Roberts, director of Tourism and Special Events for the ESCC. “It is such a wonderful way to honor our participant’s talents. The only cost involved is the purchase of the works, which becomes the property of the patron.” The 61st Annual Arts & Crafts Festival is an Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce event. BRATS TO OFFER SHUTTLE SERVICE FOR FESTIVAL Free Parking Provided at Convenient Locations The Annual Arts and Crafts Festival in Fairhope, an Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce event, brings more than 300,000 visitors to Fairhope and the entire area for the three-day event, March 15, 16 and 17. Most people know that, unless they arrive early in the morning, they won’t find a parking spot, and may find themselves driving up and down narrow thoroughfares throughout the quaint neighborhoods. In an effort to ensure smooth traffic flow and alleviate parking problems, the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce recommends festival goers utilize the shuttle service provided by BRATS (Baldwin Rural Area Transportation System). The shuttle will cost $2 each way. Free parking will be provided at several convenient locations near the downtown Fairhope area, where the festival takes place: Plantation Point Shopping Center, Eastern Shore Village and Ecor Rouge Place Center. All of the parking locations are less than a five-minute ride away. The City of Fairhope is providing parking spaces in the parking lot behind Julwin’s restaurant for handicapped people. Once those are filled, they recommend handicapped drivers park and ride the shuttle services. The festival hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and the shuttle service will continue to operate until most visitors are out of the area within a reasonable amount of time.
