Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone number is 251.974.1514. Please say we sent you! www.anthonyjonesinc.net April 2019 ● Beachin’ 5

Sands of Time The story of the Caswell Community The Caswell Community, on Caswell Lane, is one of the oldest within Orange Beach and fronts Bayou St John, (AKA Bay St John). The area was originally part of a Spanish Land Grant given in 1832 to Samuel Suarez and was later granted a United states Land patent as the Suarez Long Tract in 1925. About 1865, Lemuel Walker Sr. moved to Orange Beach and built his home between 1874 and 1878. Lemuel Walker Jr. and wife Fanny moved to Caswell by 1890 to care for his aging Father. They had 12 children… seven boys and five girls. Lem took a very active part in the growth of the fishing industry in Orange Beach and his descendants remain active in the charter fishing industry today. Gilman Charles “GC Bill and his wife Edith A. Caswell were from Illinois and in the 1880’s they began living in Elberta. They bought a large tract of land on Bear Point in what came to be known as Caswell…apparently named after Edith or her sister Alice. The first Post Office in Orange Beach opened in Caswell, November 11, 1896 with Alice Caswell as the first Postmaster. The U.S. Mail was brought to Pensacola by land routes to Peterson Point. Due to difficulty and time delays of land travel, it was not long before the mail began to be picked up at lumber boom town of Millview on the Florida side of Perdido Bay. The U.S. Mail Boat then distributed the mail to the communities of Caswell, Josephine, Miflin, Perdido Beach, and Lillian. The mail was delivered by boat to the Orange Beach Wharf on the south shore of Wolf Bay. Postmaster Alice Caswell picked up the mail and delivered on horseback to the Caswell Post Office. The Post Office was located on the porch of Lemuel Walker Jr.’s home. This was the daily routine until the Caswell Post Office merged in to the Orange Beach Post Office, October 1, 1954, after 57 years of service. Capt. Rufus Walker Sr., son of Lemuel Walker Jr. operated the U.S. Mail Boat contract during the early 1900’s. Rufus’s wife was Abbie Bill, daughter of G.C. and Edith Caswell Bill. The Mail Boat carried passengers and various freight. It was known for delivering fresh bread and pastries along its route from the open-air bakery in Josephine. To celebrate the 200 Alabama Bicentennial a Historic Marker will be placed on the site in the summer of 2019. 20 Beachin’ ● April 2019

Everyone wants their hair styled by the man who tended the British queen’s do. Hairstylist Anthony Jones prefers to make every woman he styles feel like a queen. Jones and his daughter Emma keep a nearly booked schedule at their bright-yellow, seaside salon in Orange Beach. The pair relies on three generations of hair styling know-how to keep clients happy and their hair healthy. “We’re more hair doctors than hair dressers,” Anthony said. “We want you to feel so happy when you leave and that makes us feel good.” Anthony began his career as a teen when his headmaster said university wasn’t for him. Instead, he should find a trade. Anthony agreed, he enjoyed art, and chasing girls, but not hitting 28 Beachin’ ● April 2019

the books. Not sure what career to pursue, his mother, a hairdresser, took charge. She traveled from the family home on the outskirts of London and scored him an interview with one of the most prestigious salons in the world, Steiners, responsible for styling the British royal family. After graduating from the program there, Anthony was among a small group of stylists sent to New York City to establish a Steiners Salon. They made their way to the U.S. by sailing on the last trans-Atlantic journey of the RMS Queen Elizabeth and working in the salons during the journey. One customer asked Anthony if he had styled the queen. “Oh sure,” he answered just monkeying around, he said. The wide-eyed American asked

if he had traveled to the palace and he assured her that of course not, the queen took the bus to his house to remain incognito. “I was so obviously being dumb and monkeying around,” he said with a laugh. Obviously, the customer didn’t catch on. The next day he had a line of 40 women waiting to be styled by the man who worked for the queen. Once in New York, Anthony narrowly avoided trading his scissors for a rifle. He was warned before he arrived that anyone on U.S. soil was subject to being drafted for Vietnam. Just a year after he arrived in New York, 1968, he received a government card in the mail. He had been drafted. The officer at the local draft office gave him 48 hours to either leave the country or report for duty. Steiners brought him home to England.

After another year of working at salons in England he headed back to the U.S., this time as a group director for the Midwest Division of Glemby International which operated hundreds of salons throughout America. He was based in Chicago before being promoted and moved to New Orleans. After two years there he opened his own salon on Magazine Street and soon opened three more over the next 10 years. When a competitor offered to purchase his holdings, Anthony moved to the family’s home away from home, Baldwin County, where they headed to “beach out” when Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans became overwhelming. He first opened a location near the Alabama, Florida border and finally settled into his current location in 1992. His success has been his approach to hair styling. He doesn’t rely on magazines to help customers choose a look. Instead, he files through a series of 10 features including face shape, head shape, bone structure, cheek and jaw line structure, hair texture, type, condition, and the customer’s likes and dislikes. “You are the canvas of the picture,” he said. “We can’t just pull a look out of a magazine. We go over all of this because the look should be designed for you.” His work is more than a job. It is a calling, he said. “You have to give your heart and

soul to your job,” Anthony said. “Imagine if it were you sitting in that chair. You have to treat them the way you want to be treated. “It’s just a nice feeling to make

people smile and walk out feeling like a million bucks,” he said. “I don’t think I’ll ever retire. They are going to have to haul me out of here because this gives me so much enjoyment.”

THE ANTHONY JONES COLLECTION

Anthony Jones doesn’t just style hair in his salon, he wants to make sure his customers know how to care for their hair at home too. During his training at Steiners in London Anthony learned not only how to use hair styling products but was also taught how ingredients interacted with different types of hair. In the U.S. he didn’t find products he felt were healthy for his customers’ hair, so, he designed his own. “We preach home maintenance,” he said. “We want our customers to understand that there are good products and bad products. We don’t educate them to try to sell our stuff, we educate them so they can have great hair. “If you want your hair to look like a magazine you have to use good products, know how to use them and use them often,” Anthony said. Over the last 30 years he has worked with a California-based company to fine-tune the formulas and create the Anthony Jones Collection which includes shampoo, conditioners, gel and more. Many of the formulas are specially designed for color treated, stressed or damaged hair. There is also a line for clients who are losing hair.

Crazy Sista Cooking with Lucy Buffett

Lucy B Goode’s Blueberry Almond Bread Pudding Makes 8 servings

Lucy’s Favorite Salted Caramel Sauce Makes 2 cups 2 cups sugar ¾ cup (1½ sticks) unsalted butter, chopped into pieces, at room temperature 1 cup heavy cream, at room temperature 2 teaspoons sea salt 1. In a small saucepan, melt the sugar over medium-high heat, whisking continuously. Keep a close eye on the sugar as it melts, swirling the pan occasionally. 2. When the sugar has completely melted and turned an amber color, carefully add the butter a few pieces at a time, whisking continuously. It will bubble up, but just keep whisking until all the butter has melted. 3. Remove the pan from the heat and while whisking vigorously, slowly pour in the cream. The caramel is going to bubble aggressively again, so be careful but stay firm with it. 4. Whisk until all the cream is combined and then whisk in the salt. 5. Set the sauce aside to cool for 15 minutes, then pour it into a glass jar to cool completely. 6. You can refrigerate the sauce for up to 2 weeks, but you will have to warm it before serving.

Pudding Ingredients 1½ teaspoons unsalted butter 7 cups cubed stale bread of your choice (I like to use brioche or French bread, and if I’m feeling terribly decadent and they are available, I use almond croissants) Buffett ¾ cup fresh blueberries ¼ cup slivered or sliced unsalted almonds 3 large eggs, at room temperature 2 cups whole milk ½ cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Topping Ingredients ¼ cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup packed brown sugar 4 tablespoons (½ stick) cold unsalted butter, chopped into cubes ¼ cup finely chopped salted almonds Garnish ½ cup Lucy’s Favorite Salted Caramel Sauce (see below) Fresh whipped cream Fresh blueberries How to make the pudding: 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Coat a 9-inch square baking pan with the butter. 2. Place a third of the bread cubes in a single layer in the bottom of the prepared baking pan. Add half the blueberries and half the almonds. Top with another third of the bread cubes. Add the remaining blueberries and almonds. Top with the remaining bread cubes. 3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the milk mixture over the bread and blueberry mixture in the pan, making sure the bread is completely covered by the milk mixture.

To make the topping: 4. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour and brown sugar. Cut the butter into the flour and brown sugar with a pastry blender or fork until coarse crumbs form. 5. Stir in the almonds. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the bread pudding. 6. Bake for 40 minutes, or until the bread pudding is golden brown and cooked through. 7. Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 30 minutes. Drizzle the salted caramel sauce over the top and serve with fresh whipped cream and blueberries. Note: The bread pudding can be made a day in advance and stored, covered, in the refrigerator. Just reheat the pudding and add the salted caramel sauce, fresh whipped cream, and fresh blueberries before serving.
