In addition to spectacular beaches, fabulous overnight accommodations, and tons of activities, when you visit this area, you are visiting family. The island isn’t just a tourist town. It is home to thousands of families who work, attend school and go to church together every week. This is small town Alabama. And the locals here are happy to welcome you to their piece of paradise. “Most restaurants and attractions are family-owned and operated, which adds to the authenticity of our slice of paradise,” Dorrough said. Enjoy your stay!

Tips for Interior Designing By Mary Messer As an interior designer, I have the honor and privilege of being invited into the most intimate area of a couple or person’s life, interior designing. When you entertain the idea of a new project, a skilled design professional will ask a myriad of questions to ensure that their concept fits with how the customers live and what their design needs are. In pure simple southern dialect, we just have to get nosy about their personal business. At the onset of a project some things to be determined are: • What is the total investment/budget for this project? • What is the time frame for the completion of this project? • Lifestyle questions for personal residences. In our coastal market we have a totally different concept of design. When working with new developments, I have a clear canvas on which to envision and create. With seasonal properties that have successful rentals, the property may only need to be updated with a few furnishings, new bedding, art, accessories. Sometimes they are older establishments, and I need to renovate kitchens and bathrooms, replace flooring, maybe furnishings. When involved with investment properties, the goal for

the property is first determined, followed by design concepts. Working alongside the investor(s) to accomplish their vision(s) makes for an enjoyable experience. The Owners of The Veranda and I enjoyed working together and became a Design Team as we processed through the plans and our ideas for each area of the home. Everything was purchased locally, in Baldwin County, including the storage bench imported from Europe and placed on the second floor elevator landing. Exceptional pieces of original art displayed throughout the home feature favorite artists of the owners. Some very unique pieces were placed on the "hall of art," set apart with specialty lighting to honor each piece. Each of the 10 bedrooms are themed differently, to create a "happy place" for the personality which is attracted to it. Wood flooring throughout, an elevator to connect all three floors with the entrance floor, along with an outdoor kitchen and pool on the first deck are just a few of the magnificent features of The Veranda, a Southern Coastal Home. To me, a successful project is one which upon completion not only has a wonderful new physical design or development, but also is when I obtain new lifelong friends.

Take a Day Tip:

A Walk in the Park If you’re looking for a little more than sand and sea to take up your vacation time, load up and take a day trip! There are many places for all ages and the whole family that are just a drive away from the beach and create new memories!

By Allison Marlow

Summertime traffic is at a slow crawl. Restaurants are bustling. Music wafts above the crowds. Not even a mile from some of the busiest places in Gulf Shores, alligators bellow and hiss. The trees thicken into forests and the hustle of summer vacation disappears. Welcome to Gulf State Park, 6,000 acres of the best nature experience Gulf Shores has to offer: marshland, pine forests, fresh-water lakes and dune covered, sugary sand beaches. Guests can golf, fish, camp, attend rangerled programs, visit the nature center or attend one of the many programs the park puts on every single day. After Hurricane Ivan devastated the park in 2004, major projects not only repaired the park but improved it. State officials added a

1,540-foot fishing pier that juts into the Gulf of Mexico and provides 2,448 feet of fishing space, a 5,000-square-foot swimming pool and splash pad, an interactive nature center, a beach pavilion, and campground renovations. More improvements are on the way. Passersby can already see the early construction of a new 350-room, Gulf State Park Lodge. The original was destroyed by Ivan. Other improvements include a Learning Campus, interpretive center, new trails and restoration of the dunes. A new tram service will help ferry guests from place to place. WiFi will also be added, across the entire park. “It is really fun to watch all of the plans go from drawings to incredible real additions to the park,” said Rhonda Taulbee, special events and marketing manager at Gulf State Park. “I absolutely love the trails and spend every weekend exploring them as they continue to grow. I don’t think I will ever get bored here.”

Romantic Getaway in the Woods By Allison Marlow This may be the most romantic latrine you will ever use. The Gulf State Park’s three outpost camping sites harken a safari-like feel. The canvas tents rustle in the breeze. Four cots are waiting inside. Outside, there is a kitchen with pump sink and, dare we say it, a pretty outhouse. Yes, it’s actually

kind of pretty. The campsites are tucked away at the park’s Cotton Bayou Trailhead. Outside each tent awaits a private fire ring, with neatly stacked wood, and comfy chairs. The only downside, guests have to hike in, 1.5 miles. Pack lightly. But, at $50 a night, it’s worth the walk. Park officials said the sites fill quickly at certain times of year, and can be booked one year out. May 2017 ● Beachin’ 15

BEACH ART

Nick Cantrell Batik Watercolorist

“More or less, I enjoy showing this area to the world. I’d like to inspire people to see nature and all the things we take for granted. If you show it to them in a little different light, it makes them take a second look.”

By Destiny Brown Nick Cantrell is an artist by nature. Though it wasn’t the direction he started in. The diagnosis of a life threatening condition during college helped him to re-examine his path. “I began to seriously study art because I had a life threatening situation occur,” Cantrell said. “I had a blood clot in my shoulder. Then, I was a building science major so I was going to do something practical in my trade because that’s the way I was raised. I learned more in six days in intensive care than I did in the rest of my college career. “I guess I dropped the fear that was making me learn a practical trade and decided to study my dreams. Basically, I came out of intensive care as an art major and started studying art and art history.” Cantrell thinks there are a lot of misconceptions about professional artists. His wife is also an artist, so he set his own ambitions aside to help push her toward her goals. “I hung up my ambitions to support her dreams and painted houses, became a real estate agent, and worked with FEMA for a number of years. After being away from my family for an extended amount of time in upstate New York, I decided not to go back. I decided I wanted to be a part of my community and avoid travel as much as I could,” Cantrell said. Art was his calling and Cantrell returned to his passion. The first paintings he ever did were of local musician, Lee Yankie, and the Morning Star, a shrimp boat located on the Bon Secor River. “I started showing at the GCAA Art markets in Gulf Shores and had five paintings and someone came up and said I should do Shrimp Festival,” Cantrell said. “I had five 26 Beachin’ ● May 2017

paintings, but it was six months before the festival so I got to work. I applied to Shrimp Festival and that was my first fest of significant size and it was really rewarding.” From then on, Cantrell applied to show after show. Cantrell’s art is deemed as traditional batik and watercolor. Batik is a tradition of working with textiles. “It’s wax and dye on fabric and while I use that method, I use the wax as a resist which means it blocks off areas you don’t want the next application of color to affect. I still apply everything with a brush and I work with watercolor on rice paper versus textiles. It’s kind of a hybrid of watercolor and batik and I call it batik watercolors.” To begin his pieces of art, Cantrell begins with a line drawing. “I come from a drawing background,” Cantrell said. “I could always draw just about anything I could look at and I have really good vision. I can draw because I can see things in greater detail. I’ve always had a different perspective on things and that’s what I’m trying to share a lot of times.” The process includes wax, watercolor and alternating applications. At the end of the process, the wax is removed by heat with an iron. “It’s like a game of memory because you’re covering your work as you go, it’s also like a game of chess because you have to think a few moves ahead at the same time. In the end, you have that eureka moment and can see the results of your efforts,” Cantrell said. Cantrell is mostly inspired by the nature and the underwater scenes of the Gulf Coast. “My life is full of broken pilings, brown pelicans and blue crabs,” Cantrell said. “A lot of it is what I see. I have a lot of sailing pictures of late because it’s a big part of my life. I’m a bird watching geek so birds are a huge inspiration to me as well as the underwater life. I’m more or less just

showing this area to the world. I’d like to inspire people to see nature and all the things we take for granted. If you show it to them in a little different light, it makes them take a second look.” Cantrell’s work can be found at many local places including restaurants and galleries. His work is displayed at the Welcome Center in Gulf Shores, Tino’s Fine Art & Frames in Gulf Shores, Coastal Magpie in Ocean Springs, Miss., Anchor Bar & Grill in Orange Beach, Mikee’s Seafood and the Shrimp Basket, both in Gulf Shores. He will also be one of the exhibiting artists when the Coastal Arts Center in Orange Beach is reopened. “I would not be an artist if I wasn’t on this island,” Cantrell said. “The energy of the people and the amount of talent and just the natural beauty and availability of places to explore and kick around, particularly on the water, is one of my alltime inspirations. That’s why I produce work,” he said. “I feel blessings are bestowed upon me and the least I can do is share them and the way I share things and that is putting it on paper for others to see.”

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

ALABAMA introduced rock style guitars, lights, pyrotechnics and sounds to the country audience. “We were renegades in sneakers and t-shirts,” says Teddy. “We had long hair and played loud and some of the country folks resisted us for a while. But then of course they did accept us and after that, our success made it lots easier for other bands to try it in country music,” concluded Gentry. Bands benefitting from that breakthrough include Zac Brown Band, Florida Georgia Line and Eli Young Band. They have also inspired many of today’s brightest country stars including Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan as well as pop and rock stars from Ed Sheeran to Jon Bon Jovi. American-style, all malt ale. Our cream ale is a crisp, light ale brewed with two-row barley, German pilsner malt, and just a touch of flaked maize. Light and well-balanced without hoppy bitterness, this sparkling golden brew goes down dry and leaves a hint of bready sweetness. If you are new to craft beer or just love a high quality American-style ale like we do, then this “not Bud” is for you. ABV: 5% IBUs: 15

SMALL TOWN BROWN ALE

We hope you find this beer as inviting as our small town! Our caramel-centric brown ale has a gentle, nutty sweetness with notes of toffee and chocolate from English Crystal and chocolate malts. The malt-hop balance of this brew makes our brown complex, but still sessionable. ABV: 5.1% IBUs: 26

BETTER WATCH OUT STOUT

Better Watch Out Stout is an intense, full-bodied brew with a rich and complex flavor. Roasted malt creates coffee, chocolate, and caramel flavors. The attuned taster might detect notes of slightly burnt grain and dark fruit esters. Low carbonation and hop flavor. ABV: 5.6% IBUs: 48

KISS ME I’M IRISH STOUT

A dry finish for those with that Irish sense of humor! This black beauty has prominent coffee-like and roasted barley aromas with little to no hop aroma. It might look dark and heavy, but it’s actually more medium-bodied with an almost creamy texture. Similar in style to a Guinness, but made with a whole lot more love. ABV: 4.7% IBU: 36

FOR THE LOVE OF…MOSAIC AMERICAN PALE ALE

MR. TALLYMON HEFEWEIZEN

Our American pale ale is a refreshing, fruity ale that showcases the dynamic Mosaic hop variety. Clean hop flavor is supported by a subtle malt backing to make the beer balanced and drinkable. The moderate hop bitterness lingers to a medium dry, clean finish. At 5.1% ABV, this brew is more accessible than most modern American Pale Ales. ABV: 5.1% IBUs: 37.8

DIXIE’S HEART RED ALE

For the hop lovers, we present our flagship IPA. Citrus, apricot, passion fruit, and black pepper aromas introduce this moderately-strong American Ale. We dry hop 100 Daze with modern American hop varieties to create a strong, hoppy bitterness that will linger into the aftertaste. Clean, supporting malt flavor allows the hops to shine. Did we mention hops? ABV: 6.8% IBUs: 69

MIDNIGHT CRUISE ROBUST PORTER

The golden color of our Catman Kölsch will take your thoughts right to the golden rays that light our beloved Catman trail in Gulf State Park. A clean, crisp, delicately balanced beer with very subtle fruit flavors and aromas. Subdued maltiness throughout leads to a pleasantly refreshing tang in the finish. To the untrained taster this beer is easily mistaken for a light lager, a somewhat subtle Pilsner, or perhaps a blonde ale. ABV: 5.0% IBUs: 20

When daylight comes, you’ll want to reach for this refreshing wheat beer. Brewed with equal parts German Pilsner and Wheat malts, Mr. Tallymon has a light, fruity flavor with hints of banana and clove. The body is medium to light—never heavy. Our Hefe is the perfect beer to cool you down after a long day at the beach. ABV: 5% IBUs: 23 Reflective of our laid-back ‘Bama attitude’, we’ve created this easy-drinking pint with rich caramel and toffee flavors and a medium hop bitterness. Just slightly sweet, the balance of the beer is more malted than bitter, with just a touch of spice and a roasted dryness at the finish. ABV: 5% IBUs: 23 A tribute to the allure of a dark night, Midnight Cruise is a inky brown beer with a moderately-strong malt flavor featuring roasted chocolate and coffee flavors. Dark roasted grains give the brew a sharp, but not bitter, taste countered by a slight caramel sweetness. Finishes dry. ABV: 6.3% IBUs: 35.6

ALE OF TWO CITIES SCOTTISH 70

Grab your kilt and enjoy this traditionally-brewed Scottish heavy. Ale of Two Cities has a clean, malty sweetness with esters of dark stone fruit and a faint smoky flavor. There is little to no hop flavor. The finish is dry, with lingering notes of malt and caramel. ABV: 4.2% IBUs: 16
