With rich flavors of bacon, crab, cream cheese and Vidalia tomato jam, our Bacon and Crab cheesecake creation is a dish to remember. The Factory By John Thomas Neill Fairhope Middle School The Factory was a great experience and I really enjoyed it. There is something for everyone. My favorite part about the factory was the trapeze where you swing back and forth before falling into a giant foam pit. There are also dodgeball arenas where you can play against other people, work together and meet new friends. It was awesome. Another thing about the factory is there is an obstacle course where you can test your skills and compete with other people. They also had a large area just for jumping and playing on the trampolines. This, I thought, was an all-around great experience for me and I think it would be for a lot of other people.

Bill's By The Beach By Bekah Tarr | Gulf Shores High School Not only does Bill’s By The Beach offer fabulous, fresh, unique, seafood dishes, it also happens to sit just yards away from the white sandy beaches of The Gulf of Mexico. The family friendly ping pong tables, sand pit and corn hole are a perfect waiting area for the indoor/outdoor casual restaurant with upscale fare. Bill is a hands-on owner and mingles among his customers which creates a warm environment both on the deck and inside. The smoked tuna dip appetizer was delicious and packed with flavor. The classic fried chicken sandwich is the perfect entree for a true southerner. Bill marinates his chicken in good old sweet tea and serves the sandwich on a pretzel bun, delicious! The wedgie fries were well seasoned and a perfect side for my chicken. The service was phenomenal and the menu was packed with variety, and, also included information about local fish from the region. I left with a doggie bag and a very satisfied palette. Bill’s By The Beach is a perfect venue for Sunday brunch and dinner after sunset. The spectacular location matches the cuisine and I highly recommend this coastal venue to every age customer. Just make sure to bring your appetite! 8 Beachin’ ● June 2017

the beaches. But and fun activities ngle visit. This is ys, holidays and t nine Baldwin Coast home. their favorite, ch and why out too.

We are excited to tell everyone about the Gulf Coast Zoo! When you enter the zoo you are welcomed with open arms by the amazing zoo staff. As you begin to walk throughout the zoo you may notice many different encounters the zoo offers. You can hold baby kangaroos, lemurs, snakes, or just hang out with the anteaters. While we were there, we got to hang out with the lemurs in close contact. They are so sweet and love to play with you! Not only can you hold certain animals but you are also allowed to feed them! If you love reptiles the way we do then we definitely suggest walking through the zoo’s Reptile House. The Reptile House is home to large frogs, baby alligators, and many different types of snakes. Once done in the reptile house, you get to see the cutest monkeys! The zoo is home to many different types of monkeys and has recently received a new member to the monkey family. If you aren’t a huge monkey fan, then you can walk through a giant room with birds. There is a wide variety of birds, some that will even say hello and goodbye to you. The zoo is home to more animals including: lions, tigers, wolves, an ostrich, and many more. They even have a window you can look through to see them prepare the food for the animals! We highly suggest you take a break from the beach for a few hours and visit our “little zoo that could.”

The Track By Andrea Phillips | Gulf Shores High School

The Track is definitely the place to go if you’re looking for a good time! Whether you’re in a laid back mood or ready to rock and roll, there’s something for everyone. The Track has two, 18-hole miniature golf courses, various go cart tracks, a skycoaster and much more. My personal favorite is the wooden go cart track, which is much bigger and better suited for teens than other tracks I’ve tried. I was flooring it around all the curves, and that made for an extra awesome ride. If you’re looking for even more adrenaline then you have to try the skycoaster, where you freefall 110 feet at 70 mph. If you’re feeling more laidback or just want to exercise your athletic abilities, you can play mini golf. I went on the Huck Finn course and it was scenic and challenging. I really enjoyed my time at the Track, and I think you will, too! June 2017 ● Beachin’ 9

Cobb Theatres

By Ian Sullivan | J. Larry Newton School

On my first visit to Cobb Theatres when I first arrived, the parking lot was clean and there were so many parking spots. I also noticed the big pictures of all the movies they were currently showing. The girl at the ticket window was very nice and helpful as I picked a movie. We decided to watch “Fate of the Furious”. Once we walked in the lobby, we were greeted by the general manager Mary Liz. She too was very helpful and nice. I spoke with her briefly and she let me know that Cobb Theatres are heavily involved with the libraries to give back to the community. I noticed they had a good selection of games. They also had something called the D Box. This machine lets you feel what it is like to be in the movie. The seats vibrate with the sounds and it is so cool. They have the D Boxes in in a couple of their theaters so you can watch an entire movie while you feel like you are in the action. Now for the food. They not only have the freshest popcorn I have ever had at the movies they have a pretty extensive menu. I mean for real, chicken fingers, fries, sweet potato fries, pretzels, hotdogs, funnel cakes and much more. Oh wait, I forgot to mention the nachos. They serve regular nachos but then they have “monster nachos”! These are piled with chips, chili, cheese, sour

cream and jalapenos. They also have some nutritional snacks such as gluten free cookies and chips. Mary Liz let me know they cook fresh popcorn every 20 minutes. If the popcorn sits for 20 minutes they dump it and make more. Once in the theatre the seats were very comfortable. They were also spaced out so you didn’t have to worry about your seats getting kicked. The sound was perfect too. There were a few previews but not too many. The tray that we got with all our food hooked into the cup holders on the seats and then swung in front of me so I could use it as a table and not hold the food throughout the movie. To end our trip, we were treated to going upstairs to see where the movies were loaded. Ms. Erin (another manager) took the time to show me how they load the movies and where we could see. They have several things that look like photo booths that house the movies. They load the movies once a week. All in all I think this is my favorite movie theatre.

The Wormhole By Cody Wallace | Fairhope Middle School The Wormhole is a great experience that everyone should try, even if they don’t like video games. With almost limitless games ranging from zombie games to shooting kittens out of cannons, it’s one of the best things the Gulf Coast has to offer. My friend Griffin and I went to this virtual reality gaming center and had a great time. The best game we played was called Raw Data, a first-person, shooter, sci-fi game. You get to pick through three characters, each holding a gun, sword, or shotgun. In this game you fight through waves of robots either by yourself or with friends, but, be wary of trying to reload your gun. Griffin played one simulation that was called The Brookhaven Experiment. In the Brookhaven Experiment you try to fight off hordes of zombies and genetically modified monsters. Griffin even said that it felt like he was really getting attacked. There was one other game that we enjoyed called Space Pirate Trainer where you can use guns, a grapple, and even a shield to try to survive as long as you can against flying drones. The Wormhole is a unique experience that you shouldn’t pass up. 10 Beachin’ ● June 2017

LuLu’s By Madison Marshall | Gulf Shores Elementary School Are you looking for a place with gift shops, activities for your kids, and did I mention, amazing food? Lulu's is the place to go! Put a little live music with amazing customer service and you've got the perfect afternoon! Not to mention the proactive chefs that get to work at four in the morning to make you the freshest sauces. I ordered the fried crab claws, which are freshly battered at Lulu's, and they were amazing! If you haven't tried out the ginormous ropes course, you're totally missing out! It's got countless obstacles to hang on to and is three stories tall! There is also an arcade, full of awesome games! There are classic games, new games and cards that hold your tickets and tokens! The prizes are also very fair and are much more entertaining than the prizes at the other arcades. So do you want to go to Lulu's or do you want to go to Lulu's?

By Anna Grace Fields l Gulf Shores Elementary School Lulu's is the place to go if you want to eat or play. I went to Lulu's and I had a blast. First, I ate a Caesar salad. It made my tongue want to dance in my mouth. I also thought that it was so cool that they make all of their food and sauces in-house! When we were eating we had the best waiter. Her name was Katelyn. She was so sweet. She offered water and anything else we wanted. Now let me tell you about the ropes course. It was so much fun because there were so many things you could do, no matter if you were a kid or a grown up. There is no other ropes course I would want to enjoy. Now let me talk about the "Fun Arcade"! It's the place to go when you want to play games for all ages. And don't worry, it's not a cheap one, it's a fun one! So do you want the best food on the Gulf Coast or not? The choice is yours!

Adventure Island By Alicia Coeur and Valerie Wood | Gulf Shores High School This week we got to try out Adventure Island Putt-Putt on Perdido Beach Blvd., and, just like the name implies, it was an amazing adventure! The scenery was tropical and whimsical, and it made us feel like we were on vacation, even though we were only a couple of miles from home. We loved dancing to the music that is played throughout the day, giving the whole place a great, relaxed atmosphere. Some of our fun happened on accident, like when we hit the golf balls too hard and had to go on a wild goose chase to get them back, or when one of us (we won’t mention any names) whacked herself in the face with a putter because of swinging it too far. Luckily, that was the only low point! The especially great thing is that, in addition to putt-putt, Adventure Island also has a huge arcade inside, Lazer Tag, bumper boats, and a go kart track out back. Go Karting at Adventure Island was super fun! This is a great way to bond with your friends and have a fun experience. Instead of having a simple oval for us to race around, the Adventure Island track has multiple twists and turns, as well as hills, to make the driving fun. We were allowed to go around the course three times, which was the perfect amount of time to feel like we got our money’s worth, but not get bored. Overall, the go karting experience at Adventure Island is definitely worth the visit. Add to that the putt-putt course and arcade, and you have the perfect family-friendly spot whether you are a guest here on vacation or a local looking for a few hours of “staycation” time on the beautiful Gulf Coast!

Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach By Jack Marlow | Fairhope Middle School If you are looking for a fun and family friendly activity to do this summer, I would recommend going to the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach, specifically the glass works they have called, The Hot Shop. Here they do demonstrations of how glass artists make different handmade crafts like ornaments or paper weights. The demonstration is similar to a class and they teach you how to make the different glass pieces. After the demonstration, they will let you go into the smith`s area and make your own piece of glasswork. I got to make a glass flower decoration with the demonstrator's help. The artists were very kind and were well trained in what they do. They were very cool considering how hot it is in there. Once you make the glass, they will put it in a heat box that keeps it from breaking and then they will cool it. Usually they will let you pick up whatever you made the next day. After I finished at the Hot Shop, I got to look around to see what the rest of the grounds looked like. It was gorgeous. There is a view of the water, and a beautiful mansion on the property. I really liked the program that they have here. 12 Beachin’ ● June 2017

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

BEACH ART

Spenser Frank Photographer

“I saw the Little Mermaid and it was over. I had big dreams - one day I was going to live on the water.” By Allison Marlow When Spenser Frank was a little girl, she had long, flowing hair. In the water, it floated and flitted in the waves, much like a mermaid. So, the little girl demanded to be carried to and from the pool, the lake, any water in fact, just like a mermaid. I mean, she couldn’t exactly walk with that pretend tail, now could she? As an adult, she walks to the water now, but she spends her days turning mere mortals into mermaids. “I saw the Little Mermaid and it was over,” she said. “I had big dreams - one day I was going to live on the water.” Her love of mermaids never ceased. “I thought, if I can’t be one, I’m going to make one,” she said. Frank graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1999 and spent four years in the Air Force as an air traffic controller. In her spare time, she worked as an assistant to a photographer in Florida. At the time, digital photography was just bursting onto the scene and Frank learned to work in both film processing and digital manipulation. She moved on to lessons in graphic design. Then, she took her leap from landlubber to mermaid. “I was living in Texas and my dream was to come back to the beach,” she said. While mastering photography, Frank began building her business from the tail up, literally. She designed and crafted fabric mermaid tails and pirate costumes that her clients use during the photo sessions. She makes new costumes almost weekly. She learned the techniques from her mother, and a host 22 Beachin’ ● June 2017

of artistic family members. “My mom was so crafty. One of first things she taught me was to hand sew,” Frank said. “Everyone in my family is kind of an artist. They did beading, lace making all kinds of stuff. We never just went and bought stuff, we just made it.” The older Frank grew, the more she realized that playing mermaid wasn’t just for little girls. “I saw that everyone wants to pretend. All my friends love dressing up,” she said. “What lady doesn’t want to get glammed up all shiny and glittery?” Now, her mermaid photography sessions are booked by mermaids, young and old. Mom and me sessions are among her most popular. “We have moms that say they are there for their daughters but from the time they get there the mom is all smiles,” she said. “One husband said to his wife after we finished, ‘You finally got to be a mermaid’.” Frank has mermaid costumes for adults and girls, as well as men though she has never had a dad volunteer to pose as a King Triton look-a-like. For boys she has designed pirate garb and has shipwreck props for the tiny seadogs to pose on in the sand. Families who visit the beach on vacation can view and order all their photos online. Frank said the costumes, the gentle sea breeze and the slapping of the waves brings out the best in all of her clients. “The little girls go from being shy and nervous to really becoming that character,” she said. “It’s really sweet. Their imagination is still so big.” Frank said she prefers the fun, costumed photos to standard, organized photo shoots. “Posed photos are great but you should also have ones that are a great time,” she said. “These are the ones the kids are going to remember.”

C SPIRE CONCERT SERIES PRESENTS: BRANTLEY GILBERT WITH SPECIAL GUESTS TYLER FARR & LUKE COMBS

The Amphitheater at The Wharf, 4550 Main St., Orange Beach 7-9 p.m. General admission: $59.75\Reserved seats: $59.75 $34.75 - $24.75

Although it’s tempting to call Brantley Gilbert a country artist -- he certainly embraces the outlaw country side of things. Gilbert was born in the small town of Jefferson, Georgia, just outside of Athens. He grew up hearing country music, but he also listened to a lot of Athens rock bands like R.E.M. and the B-52’s, plus the swaggering Southern rock of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd; at his best, Gilbert blends all of these various strains together in his music. ROD’S REEL CREAM ALE ALE

100 DAZE INDIAN PALE ALE 10

SMALL TOWN BROWN ALE

The golden color of our Catman Kölsch will take your thoughts right to the golden rays that light our beloved Catman trail in Gulf State Park. A clean, crisp, delicately balanced beer with very subtle fruit flavors and aromas. Subdued maltiness throughout leads to a pleasantly refreshing tang in the finish. To the untrained taster this beer is easily mistaken for a light lager, a somewhat subtle Pilsner, or perhaps a blonde ale. ABV: 5.0% IBUs: 20

American-style, all malt ale. Our cream ale is a crisp, light ale brewed with tworow barley, German pilsner malt, and just a touch of flaked maize. Light and well-balanced without hoppy bitterness, this sparkling golden brew goes down dry and leaves a hint of bready sweetness. If you are new to craft beer or just love a high quality American-style ale like we do, then this “not Bud” is for you. ABV: 5% IBUs: 15 We hope you find this beer as inviting as our small town! Our caramel-centric brown ale has a gentle, nutty sweetness with notes of toffee and chocolate from English Crystal and chocolate malts. The malt-hop balance of this brew makes our brown complex, but still sessionable. ABV: 5.1% IBUs: 26

MR. TALLYMON HEFEWEIZEN

When daylight comes, you’ll want to reach for this refreshing wheat beer. Brewed with equal parts German Pilsner and Wheat malts, Mr. Tallymon has a light, fruity flavor with hints of banana and clove. The body is medium to light—never heavy. Our Hefe is the perfect beer to cool you down after a long day at the beach. ABV: 5% IBUs: 23

DIXIE’S HEART RED ALE

Reflective of our laid-back ‘Bama attitude, we’ve created this easy-drinking pint with rich caramel and toffee flavors and a medium hop bitterness. Just slightly sweet, the balance of the beer is more malted than bitter, with just a touch of spice and a roasted dryness at the finish. ABV: 5% IBUs: 23

MIDNIGHT CRUISE ROBUST PORTER

A tribute to the allure of a dark night, Midnight Cruise is a inky brown beer with a moderately-strong malt flavor featuring roasted chocolate and coffee flavors. Dark roasted grains give the brew a sharp, but not bitter, taste countered by a slight caramel sweetness. Finishes dry. ABV: 6.3% IBUs: 35.6

KISS ME I’M IRISH STOUT

A dry finish for those with that Irish sense of humor! This black beauty has prominent coffee-like and roasted barley aromas with little to no hop aroma. It might look dark and heavy, but it’s actually more medium-body with an almost creamy textures. Similar in style to a Guinness, but made with a whole lot more love. ABV: 4.7% IBUs: 36

FOR THE LOVE OF…MOSAIC AMERICAN PALE ALE

Our American pale ale is a refreshing, fruity ale that showcases the dynamic Mosaic hop variety. Clean hop flavor is supported by a subtle malt backing to make the beer balanced and drinkable. The moderate hop bitterness lingers to a medium dry, clean finish. At 5.1% ABV, this brew is more accessible than most modern American Pale Ales. ABV: 5.1% IBUs: 37.8

For the hop lovers, we present our flagship IPA. Citrus, apricot, passion fruit, and black pepper aromas introduce this moderately-strong American Ale. We dry hop 100 Daze with modern American hop varieties to create a strong, hoppy bitterness that will linger into the aftertaste. Clean, supporting malt flavor allows the hops to shine. Did we mention hops? ABV: 6.8% IBUs: 69

CATMAN KÖLSCH

STRAND SAISON:

Strand Saison.. It just sounds relaxing. That’s probably because its name quite literally means “Beach Season.” Our Strand Saison is a refreshing, medium fruity to spicy seasonal ale with a distinctive golden color. This beaut is highly carbonated, well hopped, and dry with a quenching acidity. You’ll probably want to load this one up in the boat or your beach bag to quench your thirst and the lower Alabama sun. ABV: 6.3% IBUs: 6.3%

SON OF BATCH #1 SESSION IPA:

Can’t quite hang with the IPAs and double IPAs? Worry no more! The Son of Batch #1 Session IPA was designed for you, the cautious beer drinker that still wants big flavor. The subtle malt flavor of this beer really lends a hand to presenting the aromas of citrus and pine coming through in the Centennial hops. Coming at 5.1% ABV, this one’s worth a pint...or three. ABV: 5.1% IBUs: 15.2

BETTER WATCH OUT STOUT:

Better Watch Out Stout is an intense, full-bodied brew with a rich and complex flavor. Roasted malt creates coffee, chocolate, and caramel flavors. The attuned taster might detect notes of slightly burnt grain and dark fruit esters. Low carbonation and hop flavor. ABV: 5.6% IBUs: 48

Join us for an IPA Firkin Tapping on June 1st! Also releasing: Beach Express Blonde Ale Southernmost microbrewery in Alabama June 2017 ● Beachin’ 41
