8 Beachin’ ● May 2018

Love living by the Gulf? There’s a scientifically proven reason for that. Turns out, life by the beach is good for your body, mind and even your soul. Of course, if you’ve vacationed by the ocean you probably already knew that. An afternoon by the shore, listening to the waves crashing, soaking in the sun and sinking into the sand is the daydream many of us have seen when we shut our eyes during a busy day at the office. Now, you can tell your boss your health depends on that getaway. A number of scientific studies around the world recently examined the connection between the ocean and improved health, specifically mental health. Each one has found similar results: the ocean makes us calm, and happy. Why? The sights, sounds and even feel of the water and the sand help our bodies to relax. According to a study published in the Journal of Coastal Zone Management, participants who live in homes with ocean views report feeling calmer than those without them. The waves serve as white noise and allow your brain to unwind. The bright blues of the water and sky reportedly help boost creativity, according to the American

Association for the Advancement of Science. And even the smell of the seaside can help you relax. The Journal of Alternative Complementary Medicine published a study detailing how negative ion therapy can treat seasonal affective disorder, a type of depression that is believed to be brought on as summer changes to fall. Symptoms often increase in the winter months when there is less natural sunlight. Oxygen atoms found near the ocean have an extra electron which may help negate the symptoms when summer fades to fall. The Graduate School of Maritime Sciences at Kobe University in Japan offers this summary after a study on effects of the coastal environment on well-being: “… coastal environments encourage a number of positive psychological benefits and behaviors that promote well-being; those who live near the coast are more likely to take advantage of these opportunities for increased wellbeing. The advantages of living near the sea are more strongly associated with increases in positive outcomes and reductions in negative ones.” In short, the ocean makes us happy. On Alabama’s Gulf Coast there is no shortage of sugar, white sand and beach front spots to claim as yours for a moment or even the day, sit back, breathe it in and relax. Enjoy!

Relaxation, calorie burner, spirit booster – Yoga is all that and more BY ALLISON MARLOW

Jennifer Guthrie almost wishes yoga would disappear from social media. The memes of perfect poses and pretzel-twisted bodies do not represent the practice that she loves and teaches each day. There is no required body type, weight, height or age. Yoga she said is for everyone, in every stage of fitness. “A lot of people call and say, ‘I’m overweight or I’m not flexible so I can’t do it.’ But that’s like saying ‘I’m too dirty to take a bath.’ Yoga can help you navigate those challenges and appreciate where you are,” she said. “This is not to change what you are but to appreciate yourself as you are,” she said. Guthrie began practicing nine years ago after hearing yoga might help her frequent migraines. The practice, she said, has cured her of the pain. She became hooked on hot yoga, practiced in a heated room that helps students sweat more as they move. When she moved from Nashville to Gulf Shores she tried to recreate the studio experience in a tiny bedroom with a space heater. She knew yoga had helped her so she decided to see if she could help others. She started with a tiny, 500 sq. ft. studio and had to

10 Beachin’ ● May 2018

expand within a year. The next year she expanded again and now her studio, Glow Yoga, has locations in Gulf Shores and Mobile. “People really started to take to it and realize that once you start practicing you feel so much better in all aspects of your life,” she said. “We’re less stressed. We can cope better with things that cause anxiety. “We are able to do all the things we love to do better and with more patience and navigate things that come at us with ease, grace and joy,” Guthrie said. Even as her studio continues to grow, she continues to work to break through the intimidation factor that still stops many people at the door. “Everbody’s body is different. You are going to look different from other people when you do poses,” she said. “You do the pose in a way that feels right for you.” A yoga session has the potential to burn up to 800 calories per class but Guthrie said the main benefit is that yoga makes you more aware of what you do the rest of the day. “One hour of exercise isn’t going to undo the other 23 hours of habits, but, yoga does helps you become more mindful of what you are eating and naturally over time you want to do things that are better for you and eat things that make you feel better,” she said.

Types of Yoga RESTORATIVE: Gentle stretching, great for beginners, aging, or injured SLOW EARTH FLOW: More movement, unheated GLOW FLOW: Heated room, moves at a faster pace Most classes follow a similar sequence of movements so students can continue to improve the pose in each class. Lean, mean and on a mission 75-year-old world weight lifting champ urges everyone to hit the weight room BY ALLISON MARLOW

At Gulf Shores’ Bodenhamer Center, Betty Lafferty is a familiar sight. Men laugh and joke with her around the free weights. Women ask her for pointers. She draws more than a few stares as she stands on a stepladder below the pull up bar and lifts her tiny body, Marine Corps style, into repetitive, perfect, pull-ups. Betty’s auburn hair, streaked with blonde highlights, glistens under the gym lights. She is barely sweating as she steps down and asks if we want to see it again. Betty is 75 and has won the world championships in benching and deadlifting, nine times. She’s also held the world record in deadlifting on three separate occasions, set four world records in the bench press and has set 27 world records. In 2011 she was inducted into the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters Hall of Fame. Betty said she entered the sport decades ago when she was playing tennis. At that time she read that tennis pro Chris Evert lifted weights to improve her game on the court. Betty decided to give it a try. That was the end of her tennis career and the beginning of her world record setting days in the weight room. Now that she has won so many world championships she no longer has to qualify to compete, and Betty is on another mission. To convince everyone else they should lift weights too, especially as they age. “It’s important to get the word out that as we get older it’s even more 12 Beachin’ ● May 2018

important to exercise,” she said. “Muscle loss accelerates with age and if we lift weights we can counter that.” Betty, who can currently bench press 165 pounds and dead lift 155 pounds, said even just one day a week in the gym will make a difference.

And when you do come in, Betty will probably be there to help you get started. “Just come in once a week. I spend all day in the gym because I like it,” she said. “Every now and then I have a rest day.”

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone number is 251.974.1514. Please say we sent you! www.anthonyjonesinc.net May 2018 ● Beachin’ 13

DAWSON MORGAN

BY ALLISON MARLOW There are holes in Dawson Morgan’s bowls. There are also curves, lines, dips and shimmies. The hand built clay pieces have been pushed, pulled, tugged and broken. Structurally, Morgan has asked a lot of her clay. The result is a stunning, seemingly fragile splash of water, frozen in space and time. Dawson taps on the side of the piece and it dings like a metal dog bowl. The clay splash is designed to 16 Beachin’ ● May 2018

look delicate but could be used to bake bread in the oven. “It’s sturdy and functional. That wasn’t my point it’s just a bonus,” Morgan says. Her point was for patrons to take a moment to think about the splashes of Gulf Coast waters and how we are protecting it and destroying it. Morgan says she was inspired by the work of the Mobile Baykeeper, an environmental community organization working to protect the Mobile Bay watershed.

Her first water-related piece appeared in a themed show with the Mobile Art Council. After that, she focused squarely on a splash and what she could put into it. Now her full exhibit is on display at the Eastern Shore Art Center in Fairhope through the end of May. Viewers are drawn into the splashes, glazed in white, blues and greens. Raku pieces, created using the oldest form of ceramic with a pit fire, are darker hues of brown, black and orange. Morgan uses organic material

in the fire to create different colored smoke that is absorbed by the clay. The result resembles the dark, dirtied shell of an oyster. Stand back and there is an entirely different exhibit, the shadows left on the pedestals and floors by the intricate, laced rims of the splashes. The shadows are intentional. “It is part of the composition of the piece,” she says. “What is it going to do to the table and the space around it?” Like the water that runs through our gulfs, bays and streams, each piece seems to change mood and even color as you circle it. The works could easily find a home in a streamlined high rise or simple farm house. And like a true water splash, even the walls behind the bowls are dripping with art. Morgan’s “Wallflowers” are crafted from bits of recycled clay, torn from bigger pieces, made a few petals at a time. The flowers are rough, organic, raw and unglazed like a model emerging without makeup. “I like the way the light reflects on them, it’s very different, it’s a softness,” she says. On another wall, circular clay pieces pop and gurgle along the smooth surface. This piece, aptly called “Bubbles” evolves in the space it is given, its more than a dozen pieces never displayed the same way twice. Morgan says she declared her fine arts major in fourth grade when she fell in love with creating. She earned a fine arts degree from Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., and earned a Ford Foundation Fellowship in sculptural studies. After living in Mobile, Gulf Shores, New Orleans, St. Louis and Switzerland, Morgan now calls Fairhope home. She is thrilled to see the audience’s reactions to her first exhibit at the ESAC. “The way they have pulled this together under volunteer power is impressive,” she said. “I’m thankful to have the opportunity to have this show.”

Keeping it in our sand box BY MARY MESSER Baldwin County is a part of the Gulf Coast Plain’s physiographic region known as the Lower Coastal Plain. Most of the soil in our county has a sandy surface layer according to Soil Survey of Baldwin County. Hello, I’m delighted for this opportunity to hang out with you and discuss interior design each month! Upon this invitation, my thoughts immediately went to a subject which is Messer dear to my heart ... For the past 16 years as I’ve decorated across our Wonderful Baldwin County and beyond. Numerous times I have been asked “Mary, will you go with us to Furniture Market to find furnishings?” or “Mary, can we use Internet Shopping?” A polite “No” has and will always be my response and here is why: Locally owned ‘brick and mortar’ businesses will only remain a strength in our area’s future if we support them. Imagine with me that we are on a scenic drive through our Baldwin County ... town after town we search, only to realize there are no interior furnishing stores to be found — no place to experience how comfortable a cushion seat may or may not be, seeing the true colors and feeling the touch of a fabric, or see a piece of furniture that makes you fall in love or know “that’s the one.” The interior furnishing owners and representatives in our area offer us years of experience and a passion for stocking their establishments with furniture, accessories, and more to make your houses/condos feel like home. They make the trips to various markets and spend countless hours searching through to select lines of product which will bring the best to our area. Usually among their selections are products marked, “Made in the USA”. Purchases from them come with a personal handshake, which promises you a team of support if an issue develops. In many cases your salesperson wears 30 Beachin’ ● May 2018

the invisible hat of “decorator” — sometimes offering you many years of experience, at no extra cost. Recently I worked with newlyweds Claudia and Russell. They were so delighted with the purchase of their new home. Being avid internet shoppers, they began to ravage online resources for purchase of furnishings in their new home. The reveal of their selections, while looking delightful on the surface, caused alarm within me because of my experience with the quality (or lack thereof ) behind some pieces. I asked if they would just go with me to visit one local brick and mortar establishment for comparison of their choices. To their delight, we ended an enjoyable day with the furnishings of their new home scheduled for delivery within three days — some of which will become heirlooms to their children and grandchildren. A handshake with the owner of the establishment, a professional assistant closing out their financials, and an introduction to the delivery team added to their confidence that they were making good decisions... and that there was a team of caring professionals there for them throughout. So was this a memorable experience for them? Absolutely! The joy in their voices and smiles on their faces replaced the hidden unsureness of their initial decision to buy blindly online ... and brought peace to my heart for them that day. Interior design is all about how we experience spaces. It’s a powerful, essential part of our daily lives and affects how we live, work, play, and even heal. Comfortable homes, inviting vacation places, functional workplaces, beautiful public spaces — that’s interior design at work. I’m leaving you with names of our Baldwin County local establishments so that in the future, should you have need of interior furnishings, you would join me on my quest for “Keeping it in our Sandbox” Until next Month ... Happy Shopping! A nationally acclaimed Interior Designer, Mary’s talent is displayed in recognizable designs of residential and commercial properties across the Southeast.

BY ALLISON MARLOW When Native Americans or early settlers walked through the woods along the Gulf Coast it was rarely to enjoy the view. Instead, they were foraging for food, medicines and remedies they hoped would save the sick or wounded. Often, the remedies, culled from years of trial and error, worked. Others, helped speed the coming death. Now, vacationers and locals alike have flocked to the newest walk hosted by the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge: Medicinal and Edible Plants Walk. The 1-mile hike, hosted by refuge volunteer Suzanne Pendley, is a look at how the history of survival is weaved into the forests that still grace Alabama’s coastline today. Pendley grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin where her grandfather “knew everything about nature” and passed that knowledge on to anyone who was listening. Now Pendley forages for ingredients, sometimes. She warns heavily against novices gathering plants to heal what

ails them. “People come in and almost want a prescription for what they can pick, but there are allergens and so many variables. “You have to double and triple check with local experts,” she said. “Some varieties are toxic. And some look like another plant in a different stage, and is toxic. “There are a lot of things that will kill you, and there is no antidote,” Pendley said. There are also a lot of things that will get you in trouble when you pick them. Any plant that lives on federallyowned land is off limits. Many state parks have the same rule. Wildflowers in general are protected and are better to take home in photo form only. Pendley also said it’s better to leave wild berries and other fruits where they grow so animals have enough food. “You can go to the farmers market and pick up a basket of blueberries. The animals can’t do that,” she said. “I love home remedies but healthy eating and exercise is the number one medicine anyways,” she said. “We should be trying to prevent more than treat.” Walking along the Jeff Friend Trail, nearly every plant has a story, and a historical purpose. Here are a few of Pendley’s favorite trail tales:

SAW PALMETTO This plant is a $70 million industry and is used to make over-the-counter medications, most frequently for prostate issues. Pendley said people have reported issues taking it and often the herb skews health test results. Historically the plant was used for crafting baskets, flooring and thatch roofs. The berries are high in

fatty nutrients but are oily and said to taste like blue cheese and pepper.

AMERICAN BEAUTYBERRY Pink clusters of berries that look like grapes make this plant stand out in the green forest. Birds love the berries and they can be made into a jelly through a labor intensive process. Because the berries are bitter to the human tongue Pendley said the jelly is more sugar than fruit, though it smells wonderful and has a gorgeous purple hue. It is said to repel mosquitoes but could never compete with the strength of a commercially made insect repellent.

WAX MYRTLE Known as the mini-mart of the forest because nearly every part of the plant is medicinal or edible. Leaves are used to flavor food, much like bay leaves, and the berries can be used for wine. This is the plant that gives us the delightful bayberry smell, used in candles lit on New Year’s Eve by early settlers for good luck. Candles at that time were crafted from animal fat and produced black smoke and a foul stench. The bayberry candle was intensely laborious to make but smelled beautiful. Pendley said she made a candle with 5 gallons of the berries and was barely able to produce enough wax to create a tea candle. Probably the reason the candle was considered such good luck, they only had a few!

Pine Trees Sailors brewed a tea with pine needles to combat scurvy as the needles are high in vitamins A and C. The hard sap could be warmed and then poured over a wound to seal it. In modern medicine Shikimic acid found in pine trees is the main crude ingredient in Tamiflu. Pendley said while pine trees provide lots of vitamins and nutrients it is also considered a famine food. It helped keep people alive but was not collected for its taste.

PINE TREES Pine trees are the foundation of the American lumber industry and every piece of the tree is medicinal and edible. Pine nuts are culled from inside the pine cones. Between the bark and the wood lies a layer called cambium which can be cut up and fried, sautéed, boiled or made into flour.

Crazy Sista Cooking with Lucy Buffett Lump Crab à la LuLu over Garlic Cheese Grits One of my favorite recipes from my first book, LuLu’s Kitchen. This is a go-to for when I have company.

Lump Crab à la LuLu 4 Servings 1 stick unsalted butter 1 large leek, cut in ¼ inch slices, including green part ½ cup green bell pepper, coarsely chopped ½ cup yellow bell pepper, coarsely chopped ½ pound mushrooms, sliced 2 medium – large fresh tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped ¾ cup good white wine 1-pound jumbo lump crabmeat 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon black pepper Large handful of fresh basil leaves, cut into ribbons ½ cup grated parmesan cheese 1. In a large heavy sauté pan, melt butter over medium heat. Just as butter begins to sizzle, add leeks and cook until tender, about 5 minutes. 2. Add green and yellow pepper and continue to cook for 2 minutes. 3. Add mushrooms and continue to cook for another couple of minutes until mushrooms are softened mixture is juicy. 4. Add tomatoes and continuing cooking for 2 minutes. 5. Add wine, salt and pepper and mix well. 36 Beachin’ ● May 2018

LuLu Clue: Leeks must be washed thoroughly because they can retain a lot of dirt in the layers. I slice and separate them into rings, soaking them in a sink of cold water. Then I rinse them at least twice in a colander.

LuLu Clue: The fancy name for making basil cut into ribbons is “chiffonade.” The easy way to do this is place several leaves on top of each other and roll up like a cigar. Then slice thinly making long shreds of the herb. 6. When liquid is bubbling, gently add crabmeat. Shake the pan instead of stirring so as not to break the large lumps of crab. Cover and cook for 1 minute or until crab is heated through and mixture is back to bubbling. 7. Add basil to crab and top with parmesan cheese. Cover and reduce heat to low. Cook for 1 additional minute. Correct seasonings. Serve immediately over Garlic Cheese Grits.

Garlic Cheese Grits 4 Servings 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 6 gloves garlic, minced (or more if you prefer it more “garlicky,” there really is no limit) 6 cups water ½ cup milk or heavy cream 1 1/3 cup regular grits ½ teaspoon salt 2 cups Sharp Cheddar cheese, grated Salt and pepper to taste LuLu’s Perfect Pepper Hot Sauce 1. In a small skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add minced garlic and sauté until garlic is barely soft. Make sure not to burn butter. Set aside. 2. In a heavy saucepan, bring water and milk to a slow boil. 3. Slowly add grits and salt, stirring constantly to avoid grits clumping. 4. Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until thick and creamy, stirring often. 5. Add sharp cheddar cheese, butter and garlic and cook until cheese is melted. 6. Serve immediately.
